This is the album where I realized that Mark Knopfler was not just an awesome guitar player, but a real songwriter, too. This song, Tunnel of Love, and Skateaway are probably my favorites on the album. My ear is still used to the album versions over the live, though.
Definitely my favorites on the album. I never even play the rest as I just love those 3 songs so much I just repeat them over and over!
Yes, I agree with your songs. I caught the songwriting skill on the first album, but Making Movies really hit me. And that's why I found this pretty lady's comments so on-target: they're all little movies, on all of his albums, but this one is about romances and yearnings more than most.
Hard to beat the Alchemy Live concert. Some other greats songs from Alchemy are Once Upon a Time in the West, Sultans of Swing and Telegraph Road
Unfortunately this song is actually autobiographical. Mark Knofler the lead singer/lead guitarist/songwriter dated a female musician named Holly Vincent and she abruptly dumped him. Knofler probably correctly thought she was using him to get ahead, In this song the line 'Oh Romeo yeah, you know I used to have a thing with him" is close to word for word what she said shortly after the break up in an interview. He also says in the song "And I dreamed your dream for you and now your dream is real' basically saying she used him..
Ah man. One of my favorites! In general, I'd suggest listening to the studio versions of songs first.. THEN give the live versions a try.
What a lovely song this is! The entire "Making Movies" album is full of great songs, most notably "Skateaway". I stopped buying their albums after this one because their incredible drummer, Pick Withers, left the group. Such a romantic song; it reminds me of a guy I was dating at the time (late 1980/early 1981).
Absolutely the studio version is awesome. This is his real life story about him being used by a girl to use his fame at the time to make herself famous then once she made she left him. So so blanking powerful. It’s life in music. Unreal.
"Romeo and Juliet" is the second song on side one of their third studio album, Making Movies, released in 1980. It's long been one of my favorite albums. This live version is wonderful. The studio recording of the song was released as the third single from that album. The live audience was clearly super thrilled to hear those opening guitar lines. "Tunnel of Love", "Romeo and Juliet", "Skateaway", "Expresso Love", "Solid Rock" -- classic tunes fill that album.
"Making Movies!"This album really set Dire Straits on their way. I know they had some earlier ones. But this one broke them into the mainstream in a spectacular way. My favourite song from this album is "Tunnel of Love!" Wonderful song telling a very passionate story!
Beautiful song! I’m a big Dire Straights and Mark Knopfler fan!! Thanks for this Angela!! 😊
Her face is Infectious, she got it.
Havent hear this one in a while. So beautiful. 💗💗 (must hear the studio version too)
I'm so excited that you're reacting to my favourite 80's love ballad. It always gives me chills. Please react to "Money for Nothing" or "Walk of Life" if you haven't already!
Mark Knopfler's the guitar heroes Guitar Hero.
Love Alan Clarke's "Stop in the name of love" motifs during the outro.
They use the same intro (STOP in the name of Love) on Tunnel of Love, Wembley '85. It must have influenced him somehow in his youth.
What timing I was just listening to this song in my car earlier today and introduced my 10 year old son to this great song..
one of my favorite songs. wore out my turntable playing this album in university ...
This video showed off their musicianship skills. I would watch the original music video to get the full force of the emotion of the song. Sometimes live Mark can 'speak sing' so he falls off the beautiful original melody. I would also recommend 'Telegraph Road'!
They are a really great group some of the very best guitarist in this band they made lots of great music, good reaction thank you. 🌹🍷
Beautiful love song! I think he knows how to do a love song the way it's meant to be. Like the line at the start "Juliet, the dice was loaded from the start".
An all time favorite...
Great reaction!! Thank you Angela. Take care and best wishes from the UK.
Beautiful song. Listen to the studio version. Much clearer than this and the dynamics stand out much more
Sadly, this version was a little drowned out a bit by the audience
Mark Knopfler (the singer /guitarist) is a real talent. Incredible guitar player
Nice one, Ang!
The official video for this song is just great too. Nice reaction again.
Crazy coincidence that a reaction to this song shows up on my CZcams feed today. The song just happened to randomly play on my MP3 player during my jog about two hours ago. Hadn't heard it in a long time and I was reminded what a good song it is. Not a lot of reactions to this track so an excellent choice, though I would have went with the album version since the lyrics drop out during this live version, hard to hear what he's saying.
I am old. When I realize that 1980 was a really long time ago, I feel old. Great song.
like this song this is the Alchemy version , but live version my favorite is the ON The Night concert
Skateaway is an amazing song … one of my favorites by Dire Straits. It’s worth listening to if you get the chance. Guaranteed no disappointments!!
Awesome reaction to a great song. Thank you
We did Shakespeare in college, but the ONLY time I understood Romeo and Juliet was when Dire Straits told me
Do yourself a favor and read the lyrics and listen to the studio version. One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
And all I do is miss you, and the way we used to be
All I do is keep the beat and the bad company
And all I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme
Juliet, I'd do the stars with you any time
Soooo expressive...and the song too!!
Danced with my Wife to that Song when we Got Married 36 Years Ago.
My favourite group😊
Less is more and empty buckets, you do not seem like an empty bucket to me, good reaction.
Kind of off topic but the title reminds me of a song by the Pointer Sisters called "Fire". These ladies were amazing and had a number of hits in the 80s. Well worth a listen.
To be honest this is one of the few songs of theirs which doesn't suit the live version in my opinion. It isn't about Mark Knopfler's intricate guitar playing, it's about the lyrics and if you're hearing it for the first time (like Angela) it's really hard to pick them all up on the live version. That said, it's still a gorgeous song.
An all-time favorite song for me. Incredibly evocative lyrics. But yes, studio version.
Romeo and Juliet was a big hit back in the day😍
This live performance was at Hammersmith Odeon, London, in 1983
I know this because I was there!
You have to react to more Dire Straights
I suggest more from this tour, the Alchemy Tour, I suggest Sultans of Swing and Telegraph Road, the Alchemy version really shows the talent and depth in the band
This has always been my favorite Dire Straits song. You have great hair.
Korean. Or maybe Indian.😂
Great! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😃😃
Mark Knopfler is a great guitarist and song writer. Please check out Tunnel of Love (Wembley live '85).
Full of nostalgic feeling and probably one of the greatest guitar solos ever.
A really great Dire Straits number comes from their first album - "Down to the Waterline." I felt this one was always eclipsed by "Sultans of Swing" (which is pure perfection) but can stand on its own.
Agreed
One of my favorite Dire Straits songs. I suggest listening to the studio version too
Another new one to me! My favorite of theirs is Sultans Of Swing!
@ 9:18 yep.
This is such a beauty. You would have been better off with the studio version for your first listen, though.
hmmm...true live...absolutely brilliant
Loving the'badhairday' Angela🤗 Now that you've finally found'Alchemy live' please marvel at 'Sultans of swing' & 'Telegraph road'! You won't regret it.Take care & thankyou.
un autre live super Télégraph Road a regardé 😊😊
This is one of those songs where the studio version is better than the live. The lyrics are so profound that the distortions of the live performance take away from the message of the music. Marc's guitar playing is epic and fits his lyrics like a glove. Put the studio version on your playlist. This one lacks the quality the song deserves. Thank you for your reaction, it always provides a fresh look at songs I grew up with.
Ok little one
@@dalemoore435 ass
I agree. Live versions are nice for energy and extended guitar solos --- but the intimacy and beauty of the song come across better in the studio.
@@dalemoore435 Unfortunately, I ain't that little.
I agree.
you should listen to the album Alchemy...it's Dire Straits in concert...and you will experience his true guitar .....his true self
Commentator David Aquarius is so right, as with all Dire Straits song, they are recorded so much better in studio. Beyond the obvious, Straits' music is recorded at such a high level of clarity, it's almost a sin to listen to it any other way . . . almost.
Knopfler's guitar playing and vocals are always the highlights of Straits' music.
Too many songs to point out, all the way back from Sultans Of Swing.
I especially love his solo work on "The Princess Bride" with the song "Storybook Love", with vocals performed by Willy DeVille. It received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.
Live is a good choice if it is from the Thank You Australasia concert, which is their best performance. Otherwise the studio version. The song is semi autobiographical as the protagonist of the song is a hopeless romantic who keeps trying the same ways of romance but he is destined to fail.
Live versions are for listeners that already know the songs
Yes, Mark had a lot of great tunes.
As someone else mentioned...please listen to the studio cut!
You gotta hear the sultans of swing
Give the studio version a listen, Angela. The guitar's.. melody.. everything comes through better.
Yes, I think you'd like "Skateaway" - about girl who would embrace a bad hair day.
Mark Knopfler is a genius guitar player and songwriter. Check out his album Shangri-La.
Check out telegraph road and tunnel of love live
I wonder how Holly Vincent reacts to this song over the years 🤔
❤️❤️❤️👍🍀🌹
If you like this group and if you haven't done it yet, you should react to "Walk Of Life." It will go right to your phone.
Angela... You have been making great choices... And I don't think you could have a bad hair day...🙂
It's nothing wrong with the hat. Your matching lol.
Hi Antzela! Loved your reaction! Picturing yourself in a drive-in is something that could have actually happened, as the song is heard in at least four movies:
Empire Records (1995) czcams.com/video/mEWTm3jo5eM/video.html
Hot Fuzz (2007) czcams.com/video/Gj4QvsIPqSI/video.html
I, Tonya (2017) czcams.com/video/iA_iiVDVeL8/video.html
Set It Up (2018) czcams.com/video/AaVaL_mT1jo/video.html
The studio version is the best version although this is good. Make sure and read the lyrics too, so touching/heartbreaking, but with a slight twist at the end. The lyrics were difficult to hear in this version.
A truly good guitarist will have a conversation with you...
Could you react to Skid Row - I Remember You
Some might disagree, but for me the studio version of this is far superior, have a listen Angela, the lyrics become much clearer.
I love this song but I would have rather listened to the studio version. I think for reactors, the studio version of songs is better for reactions. The live version is good if you like the song and want to hear it live to see how the band plays it.
Hi Angela - I always love your reactions, especially to the 70's and 80's music. I noticed that you only did 1 ABBA song (Dancing Queen). There are SO many amazing Abba songs that you may have never heard. Maybe try this one to start with:
"Gimme Gimme Gimme" czcams.com/video/XEjLoHdbVeE/video.html
Pity it’s not the studio version.
As incredible as Mark Knopler is as a guitar player, he's probably a better songwriter. Brothers In Arms, the song, is the most underrated song of the 1980's.
A thoughtful reaction as usual Angela, the intimate groove is what it's all about, and you can tell from the audience response it's a favorite with many. But as on other occasions, the great guitar legend is let down by his crappy, banal lyrics, and the muttered delivery doesn't help, though his gruff vocal style is always effective. Instrumentally he's a fine composer - consider his sublime score for 'The Princess Bride' as just one example - but wordwise he's no Dylan or Cockburn, kinda surprising for a former English teacher.
Typically wit these guys the studio is the way to go..not like this is bad..
I dig the Indigo Girls version much more!
shame you had to react to live version where the lyrics aren't clear, album version would've been better
As everyone is saying, they studio version is so much better. Not sure why anyone would suggest this one to start.
No, it's not. This is the best version of the song.
Great song, just not a great version.
bad hair day? i hate cute people .
The album version is FAR better. You miss so much of the subtlety with this.
Studio version better.
The studio version is much better.
Great song, terrible rendition
And the production is so good on that album, I wish that was the version used for the reaction.
Agree, this version is weak.
No, it's actually the better version they ever played.
Skateaway is way better than this one.
