In today's video, courtesy of channel fan Denis I drive the often forgotten Bentley Continental GT3-R. Dubbed the firm's most extreme car, they sought to create a roadgoing tribute to the GT3 racer. However, still weighing in at over two tonnes, can you really make a hard core Bentley - or will it just be a compromise in every department?

I live right next to Crewe and so I see plenty of Bentleys on the roads. Never in my years have I ever seen one of these before, I quite frankly would have thought it was a kinda tacky bodywork job if I did. How amazingly absurd that they actually made something like this, even if only 300 exist. Thanks for teaching me something new
*300
@@jordanfeltcorn1645 ha I corrected it just before you mentioned it, but thanks for letting me know!
You probably didn’t see any of these Volks-‘Bentleys’ at Crewe because they were made at the Volkswagen plant in Germany.
I don’t know if these particular models were made at the Volkswagen factory in Germany, you know the place where they make the Volkswagen-Badge’d version as well, but very many Volks-‘Bentleys’ have been made there over the years.
@@pistonburner6448 that would make sense, a lot of their more interesting models get put on display at the front of the building but never this one. Chances are they never even passed through the Crewe site
I live in Zurich and I saw one yesterday
Crewe’s most extreme car, you’ve clearly never hung out on grand junction retail park in the max power era 😂😂😂
Them were the days back in the 90's
Haha! Grand Jcn Massif! 😂
I love how the drive selector housing is the exact same as my dad's old A6 from 2002 he used to have.... and I'd imagine a lot of other Audi's from this time. I could never get over that.
That’s what puts me off 😂
You'd imagine? That car is 100% Volkswagen Group product, not a Bentley...they just bought the brand and then slightly adapted a Volkswagen Phaeton. So they don't even use the Volkswagen Group D platform's best or second best version for the Bentley, only the third 'best' (if you can call any VW D platform good enough to characterise it as 'best'...). They'd have the aluminium Audi version, and later on during making this next gen slightly modified version of the Bentley there already would've been the RWD-type Porsche Panamera version. But Volkswagen chose to start selling their cars marked as 'Bentleys' using the old-style front-wheel-drive-based steel chassis platform, the same as Phaeton.
It's all just a Volkswagen...I mean they don't even really do anything in Volkswagen's UK plant other than assemble parts brought in from Germany, Slovakia, Hungary etc....and China. Even the bodies are made in Germany and Slovakia and shipped to the UK for assembly. Very few car plants even call themselves 'factories' if they don't even make the bodies there. It's just assembly for marketing reasons, just so that they can print in the brochures that 'Bentley'(really Volkswagen) makes their cars in the UK(really made in Germany, Eastern Europe and China and shipped to be assembled in the UK).
The Bentley Flying Spur was almost exactly 100% a Volkswagen Phaeton with nothing but the outer body panels slightly tweaked and the VW engine slightly tweaked. And the Continental was exactly the same but with a slightly shortened wheelbase. All the components are the same, in the same places...
The lightest two and a half tonne car in the world.
What a giggle. I love that it is a serious car that doesn't take itself too seriously which, come to think of it, is very Bentley.
This and both the first- and second-gen Conti SuperSport is my favourite of Continental GTs. They're just so in-your-face yet somehow it just worked for me.
A bit of a polar opposite, huh. At one side I love Brooklands and Mulsanne yet on the other I went head-over-heels over something as brutal as Conti GT3-R.
That's just pootling about on a British B road. Immense car, but those crackles & pops would drive me mad! Glad that it exists though.
Perhaps the next car in J's garage? Thanks J! 🙏🙏
I’d choose the continental with the V8 every single time. I just love that noise, I’ve only seen the GT3R once but I’ll never forget the noise it made as it went through my village
Agree, also Volkswagen's W12 engines are horrific maintenance nightmares when they get to this age.
Excellent review Jay, you really sold me on this car and it's definitely on my list of wants 🤤
Live about 3 miles from the factory, saw these regularly on road test, you could hear them a mile off.
If I had a GT3R I would have done the same mods as well. I would have swapped the wheels too though.
The review we never knew we needed🙌🙌
This is why i like this channel. Never heard or seen this particular Bentley before. Had no interest in the brand, but thats a lovely car. Love the green details. If i ever won the lottery and bought a bentley it would be one of these.
Very cool car. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
Great video! Sounds great
Cool video.😊All the GT3-R we’re built in Crewe. Design done in-house by Race team and mulliner.
excellent review 👏🏻 the GT3R and the Breitling watch, whoever Dennis be, he is a very lucky man!
I remember the first day I Heard about this Bentley. One day, I bought a CAR magazine, a "British special" where they took a GT3R to remember the famous Bentley drivers from the 30s, an amazing article!
Fantastic video bro
I’ve been waiting for this one!
One of your most positive videos James - That means you loved the car. And that means you should buy one ! ❤
@5:38 -- *So what you're saying is that a Bentley never had the makings of a varsity athlete?* 😎🤣
Aye, I love me a Sopranos reference! 👌
I have one of those. In US we only got 99 of them. So out of 300, US got 99 of them. Phenomenal car! I think in time these will be worth a ton.
Saw one a while back, just outside Swindon on a back road. They certainly stand out, this was white and green too.
Could be this car. Was delivered to one of DL dealerships
@@bentleyboyracer3817 it was going through Wroughton, so possibly 👍
I love the way it looks
Performance and luxury, seems a hard combination to beat.
Just colour me green with envy. I remember similar Bentleys racing at Mt Panorama here in Australia. They were a stunning car to watch. Anything that runs at the mountain with the ability they exhibited, need respect. I would love to run one at the Mt Cotton hillclimb.
Wasn't the noise fantastic!
Not similar. The race cars were not just adapted for racing. No, they had changed EVERYTHING in them to the OPPOSITE of what would be in those Volkswagen road cars to be able to be tracked...and even then they needed massive help from the BOP regulations to slow others down for them.
Seriously: the weren't just 'adapted' like cars usually are for racing. Literally everything was changed to the opposite style of new parts. Even the engine block was changed to a reverse-flow arrangement...literally everything, even the overall platform concept was changed so instead of a FWD-based one with power added to the rear and the engine waayyyy in front of the front axle near the bumper, it was changed to pure RWD and the engine was brought to the opposite place, well behind the front axle. They had to do everything the opposite of the VW way, and instead build that race car like BMWs, Alfa Romeos, Maseratis, Jaguars, Mercedes etc. are made in order to perform.
The 'Bentleys' you've seen on the race track were the _opposite_ of any Volkswagen Group road cars...
I read pistnburner’s reply and found the modifications and understand why they performed so well. Even the badges were altered.
Get it over to Harrys to be weighed! 🤣 Great vid and nice to see another Bentley on the channel!
I can see these going up in value.
Dear James, nice review ...
Fascinating!!!
I'd LOVE a ten or 15 year old Bentley.
But I'm not brave enough.
The expense if something goes wrong would terrify me.
Bankrupt you*
They are Volkswagens now which is a good thing
@@N1ckZ They’ve been VW-Group for the past 20+ years mate, still money pits!
@@Taylor40667 These Bentleys have a reputation for robust strength.
They're not fragile like a Ferrari or an Aston.
But when something does goes wrong... KAPOW!
The colmans special driving gloves😂
So pleased that you have finally found a Bentley that you like. I find your comments about the current Conti really interesting as others seem to find the ride quality really good (check out Harry’s Garage latest vid on the car for example). Do you think it possible that the example you tried was out of sorts for some reason?
One question, what was the bulge on the centre console that looks like a sunglasses case?
Finally, cannot believe how much content you are managing to crank out whilst maintaining your high standards, kudos to you sir.
I've driven hundreds of Bentleys and JayEmm is correct that the 3rd gen handling is "too firm". Doesn't feel luxurious in ride quality. But reviews differ because people have different benchmarks and viewpoints. Eg if you compare it to an equivalent Aston then yes the ride quality is better. Compare it to a 2nd gen GT and it's a big downgrade.
Also yes that bulge is a removable sunglasses holder.
@@keirbourne5323 that is really interesting, I think the new car is trying to be part GT and part Sports Car whereas the older models were more pure GT’s. If you came to it cold then it is probably perfectly acceptable but would feel as though it has lost some it’s waftiness compromise to what went before. I would be more than happy to accept that given its breadth of talents. Thanks for clearing up what the bulge was for.
Strange seeing a Bentley with a wing...Cool video!
The Bentley GT3 race car is the best advertisement for BOP
Godspeed the boatley
...and regulations allowing them to change _everything_ in the car to the opposite of the original road car.
Awesome review Jay...as usual.
Is there a so called 3rd gen of the Bentley GT's, because I recall some reviews not to long ago of them saying outlandish things like more than just comparison's to Porsche?
Also how noticeable did you find the under-steer when pushing it through corners at speed?
Thanks again.
The way you said prior blew my mind.
I've not seen one in the wild before but I happened to see one today just after watching this
Now this looks proper Gansta! Or at least it would if it wasn't in white with very tacky looking graphics down the side. It needs to be black but I'd definitely keep the black and green interior. A big old lump of incredibly powerful metal, certainly no sports car but (especially with 700bhp!) a staggeringly quick GT! It would get a space in my dream car garage haha! (Although it would defo need a black wrap!)
I thought you liked to know i bought the mk1 soon to be a classic you said. / 1991 ford focus ZX3 dark blue us verison i just watched your video on it ty it made my day I subscribed too !!! I luv the car !
Oh ur video called ( Incoming Classic ? Why you need to buy a mk1 Ford focus )😊
Jay, there's no alleged about the acceleration vs top speed. The final drive ratio was indeed changed.
It's so weird seeing an 'old' car on your channel that I also watched youtube videos on when it was brand new. It was very entertaining watching Chris Harris fling one of these sideways around a track back then!
I also don't seem to remember these cars being all that eager to pop and crackle in period videos, perhaps it's a side effect of the new map?
Kind of like trying to make a GTi version of Kerry Katona. Completely mad.....and yet...
it used to be said the overmotorized coupe-crossovers are bizarre....but this impressive coupe-truck....it is absolutelly different over-the-top level taken to 11...and you may never leave it with refuelling nozzle in alone nor the whole dispenzer is gone....
Just needs a Stobart windscreen sticker aye Ettori,
I would have expected every oem turbo charger to be " blue printed" as standard.
I mean the Tolerances needed in the turbo charger must mean any blue printing is virtually sod all.
You'd think so right ?
There a big market in blueprinted or hybrid turbos. Manufacturers save every penny they can and they certainly save money on turbos.
Blueprinting a turbocharger= Tighten housing to wheel clearances to maximize efficiency and bearing clearances to minimize lag.
Lovely spec. Love these type of videos as I didn’t even know they made this type of thing.
These could also be offered with an e85 tune from the factory right? I remember a TopGear item about a fast Bentley with strang3 fuel.
It's Wonderful!
I swear I saw a Aston Martin Valkyrie just around the corner to you a couple of days ago
I thought it was a jaguar XJR 15 at 1st
Nothing to do with me sadly!
Those shift paddles are almost as extreme as those found on the new Dodge Hornet. Not sure how we should feel about that!
Lovely 😍
Jay, see if you can get your hands on a SuperSports ISR (Ice Speed Record). They were quite something…
I'd like to see you try a F12 BMW M6, which from the performance perspective, weight and size should be comparable to this one. But it won't be as luxurious.
seems like a great and relatively cheap alternative to the Vantage gt12
I own a 2015 Audi S6 which is tuned with upgraded turbos and exhaust. I understand they have the same engine but they sound so similar
The pops and bangs are pretty over the top for a car like this
Love everything about this except maybe the green interior touches
Unless it's better in real life? and with only 28 kicking around I'm never likely to find out
Omg Jay, how did you get your hands on that!? 😮
JayM. Bent' GT3-R won our Bathurst 12 hour race around the mountain Downunder mista ! Just in case the Brits forgot this title sir ? V.
Someone might call it tacky, but I saw this car in person only one year ago and to be fair, it looks quite impressive, not as the track variant GT-3, but still - very distinguishable.
*Sorry, why does that look like rust under the paint* @ 0:16? 🤔
Could be just dirt which has had water flow through it under airflow. I can't see any Bentley owner leaving 'rust' on the car, or Jay not mentioning it. Agreed it looks bad in the shots, a white car won't help that.
Bentley Continental GT3R still turns heads on any car park or petrol station. ❤❤❤❤❤
I feel like James looks a bit at home in the Bentley….fits a unique spot on the drive in his collection too. Hmmmm….
Hmmm indeed
I like this genre of car. Hyper-luxury/super sport.
Best looking tank ever 😮
that wingie looks so cute XD
Ayup Jay is channeling Tiff Nedell 😂
Boy Racer meets Lord of the Manor. You mean Mr. Toad of Toad-Hall?
Never thought a 700hp bentley would get better mpg than a 225hp ford focus. That's mental.
The absolutely ferocious pops, bangs and crackles from the tailpipe seem to me to be incongruous in the extreme on a Bentley! High top speed and rapid acceleration goes hand in hand on a continent-crushing GT bruiser - but the exhaust is like your waiter at the Savoy sporting matching full-sleeve tattoos, to go with his breast implants and Prince Albert piercing clearly visible under hs lycra thong!!! Utterly bizarre!!
Yes, less is more with something like this. As the owner's had it mapped, seems he wanted them?
Sounds like corsa at maccys on a Friday night
😂😂
2nd gen should have been a big upgrade. But the financial crash happened….. so it was trimmed back, not surprisingly.
These big buses are cool, yeah they won't be as quick on a track as a true track focused sports car but I doubt they cared much about that.
Very beautiful
Technical question - why does the sound on the drive by’s differ so much from the on car sound - is it because the mic is only picking up on bank of the V8 sound track?
I imagine the car has a lot of sound deadening on the inside
What a car! Nonetheless, for me their best car is their now discontinued Mulsanne.
Is that rust on the wheel arch?
Both you and Harry putting out Bentley video's back to back too funny. Then, on my way home earlier, one of these passed me by, what a coincidence.
Veyron seats really do it too
Beautiful car, love the white and green colours, but the club decals totally ruin the look for me.
I love it. Looks so wrong it's right.
Do not change the music, you could extend it by 15 seconds.
Title neglects to remember the MFB, but as it wasn't a production model I'll let it slide
Dream motor.
i was today years old when i knew these even existed lol
Those driving gloves that driver was wearing realky didn't belong inside a Bentley 😂. The colours was wayyyyy of
When is the comparison with Rapide S coming? 😂
Do people not read autocar anymore? They did a road test of this car back when it was new.
Crewe’s Missile.
Yes it was
Not sure about the exhaust noise. Impossibly expensive as well,
I think it has a problem, sounds like something is flapping around.
WEIRD.....I recall Jasper Carrott, (aka Robert Davis OBE), singing about his "Funkey Moped" in the mid 70's....why on God's Earth did Bentley emulate to return to this Era with an Engine note EXACTLY THE SAME...answers on the back of a Matchbox...crazy...G.A.R.
Ok, and how reliable is it? What are its typical failure points and how is the situation with parts and service?
All good points, which a review should cover ideally. Easier to do when you have a car for a week. Guess JM had this for a day or afternoon so could only do so muvh research on it.
Is 300 abbreviated for Tonnes??
😢 What a shame that the Germans do not know how to make a beautiful looking Bentley !. Give me an old-school Bentley any day ,over a new one !. 😢
Yeah, when Volkswagen tries to imitate the cars of another brand or try to go retro they only know how to do one thing: “New Beetle” it.
(The exception is Volks-‘Lamborghinis’: because they are so different VW originally only decided to / could make copies of the equivalent Ferrari for the small model and copy the old Lambos for the big model. And they just added some Countach-like edges. Just copy, and add some edges. They’ve even gone full-on and copied the Countach‘s design as completely as they could for one model/version now!)
Spectacular car
I’d say exactly the opposite. Literally in every conceivable way, from every principle to every detail it’s totally the opposite of a proper car for me.
It’s a Volkswagen, front-wheel-drive-based, massively overweight. It’s unbalanced, front-heavy and understeery. It’s imprecise, lacking in feel, undynamic. It has the absolute polar opposite of nice design, brand heritage and racing heritage or coolness…the absolute opposite of those. It’s unreliable, technically totally uninspiring mass-production VW stuff.
@@pistonburner6448 I am 99.9% certain this car is not at all FWD-Based, it will be rear-biased. Looks are subjective, but I get what you mean about being overweight, though in the context of Bentley’s, it isn’t really overweight, but in the context of a 911 GT3, just about everything is too heavy.
Bentley has a LOT of racing heritage, 104 years actually, though admittedly it isn’t well-known.
@@mawaboutcars671 Incorrect. That car is 100% front-wheel-drive-based. That platform is the Volkswagen Group D1 Platform from 2003, which is based on the D Platform family which was first introduced in 1988, and itself is based on previous FWD-based platforms of theirs. The way it was designed has firm roots in Volkswagen Group's longitudinal engine FWD platforms.
Rear-bias is a totally different thing and has nothing to do with being FWD-based nor the platform.
BTW the platform for the Volks-'Bentley' which is just a rebadged short-wheelbase Volkswagen Phaeton isn't even Volkswagen's best D-family platform: they have a more advanced and expensive aluminium space frame version for Audis, and later on (but before this 2nd gen Contintntal was introduced) developed a totally different rear-wheel-drive-based platform for the Porsche Panamera.
@@mawaboutcars671 Volkswagen's 'Bentley'-branded racing heritage is a shameful sham, totally fake nonsense and an embarrassment.
The real historic Bentley did in fact have a nice racing heritage but that is a totally different company, had a totally different culture.
None of those traditions have anything to do with what Volkswagen Group is and how they operate their bought 'Bentley' brand or these Volkswagen-designed and Volkswagen-based products.
Even Volkswagen's 'Bentley'-branded racing stuff they did had nothing to do with the actual products they sell to their customers, not at all like their road cars in any way. In fact they were in every way _the opposite_ of their road cars. It's all just fake marketing stuff.
As mentioned in the video the default torque bias is 60% rear and it feels it to drive
Wow
This is my dream car ever if can anybody provide me a ride in it it will fulfill my wildest dream. Once I saw this car in Harrogate when I spotted it I started to run towards the car and almost broke my legs to witness it a hear it. Owner let me kindly video recorded it and photograph it as well. I been shaking from that car as teenager before losing of its virginity 😁😁😁 Wau I love this car❤️❤️❤️ My poster car really
I would buy a Bentley for luxury not for fast cornering but I can never afford one anyway
Jay please explain why American MPG is different from British MPG? I have never understood it.
Because an American Gallon is a 3.77l and a English gallon is 4.55l. you can travel further on 4.55l than 3.77l
@@LawrenceTimme Oh ok, I never knew that. I would hear MPG numbers on TopGear and I thought how is that even possible. Now it makes perfect sense.
British gallons are larger
