  • Episode#47 Custom Virtual Pinball Cabinet Tutorial Series Extravaganza!
    In this video I show you how to clone your HDD or SSD hard drive for your virtual pinball cabinet so you can back up all of your hard work. This is crucial to do before making any changes to your setup or updates to your vpin software. In case you lose a hard drive or royally screw up your set up, you can just revert back to your cloned hard drive!
    It's easy to do and I show you 3 methods on how to back up your info: a dual bay docking station, online free software, and a simple usb back up too. Don't become a victim of hard drive failure....or stupidity.
    I also show you how you could upgrade your hard drive from an HDD drive to a SSD drive as well as upgrade the size of your hard drive which requires a few additional steps.
    I used Lazesoft for the free software, here's the link. I'm not sponsored but hey it did the trick and was super easy to use....did I mention it was free!

    I use Arcronis True Image 2015 and yes it is now 2024. I make multiple back ups every 4 months. Recovery is very easy. Boot with a USB stick select the image and restore. There is no issue restoring to a smaller disk drive so long as the image can fit. For example you have a 2TB drive and your backup image is 900MB, you can easily restore it to a smaller 1TB drive.

    LOL great video. love the Multiplicity moment. i have a wavlink. the bays are labelled Source and Target so you know which is which. put in the drives, power it on, hold down the button and it starts. never had to adjust for unallocated space. it auto partitions the remain space as part of the OS partition. its been a savior for me and folks i help out with their pcs. even used to to upgrade my kids' xbox drive. but i see you on here using DiskPart 😎lol. nice.
    side bar, in the process of upgrading the "starter" laptop i used for my first build and got a hold of a dell xps desktop my buddy wasnt using anymore. went and got a hp portable monitor to replace the laptop screen. just wish i could have moved the hard drive over and kept it moving. laptop was an hp so the harddrive wont load on the dell. a full rebuilding we will go. i got a backup of the vpinball folder so after i go back through your video for initial setup i will copy the data back. thanks again for everything

      Thanks, yeah it was to film and edit. Those docking stations are really easy that's for sure. That sucks about the PC to dell, you could put it back on the laptop and copy data to an external drive at least after you do a fresh operating system install on the other. Thanks for the watch!

    I built my first ever pincab (custom size around 4/5 actual size, based on 50's Gottlieb's shape) and after all the work to set up every table/db2s/etc I figured that cloning is definitely NOT an optional step for me.

    Great video! I have an older version of the Sabrent disk cloner and can attest to its accuracy and ease of use. The model featured in your video, however, does not work with newer M.2 drives which use the NVMe interface. There is a more expensive version which works with M.2 drives but, as far as I can tell, not SATA drives. So, before orderinig one of these or your backup drive, confirm your drive types.

    You answered my question 3 weeks ago, I have 1 more. I just purchased the offline cloner that you used. I also purchased a new 3.5 hdd. Do I just take it out of packaging and put it in the receiving end of cloning device or does it need any formating of any kind? This is my firet time of doing this kinda thing. I am going from a 8T to 12T. Also how long will this take Thanks. Your video gave me the courage to try this.

    Thanks for the video, great job, good thinking!
    But...can you acces single files on your cloned drive?
    Tha ones I tried I could not and mostly if I need my backup it's more for 1 or 2 older files I need and for sure I do not want a complete clone as the clone is always older then the original.
    What I did: I took my SATA and power cable outside the PC cabinet so I can reach them from the coindoor, I attach my backup hdd an dI just copy all the needed files to the backup.
    Takes a lot of time but you only have to do that once.
    After that I use a program called SyncBackFree and I do a mirror so only the changed files will be copied to my backup.
    And I save my registry.
    By that I have full access to each individual file, that works better for me.
    Disadvantage though is if you really screw things up and you need a total new install then it takes a looootttt of time installing Windows and your programs but honestly...in 10 years I never needed to do that (but sometimes I was very happy with acces to some single files on my backup).
    Again: Thanks for your great video(s) !

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Thanks! Yeah it's just a back up in case you need to revert but you can just take older files and transfer them over too. Lots of different ways to do it. Thanks for the watch!

    Loving your videos as always - I have the same SSF amps as you - but! The Bluetooth is killing me! Each time a device either in my home or a nearby apartment comes across it, the amps immediately connect to it and I loose the SSF until I power cycle one or both, Have you or anyone come across an alternative? I've found a few but none seem to have a subwoofer output for the shaker which is a pain!

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  Před 4 měsíci

      I've some people having issues with this but I never did so I never looked into it. I wonder if there's a work around to block the Bluetooth like plugging in an aux cord or headphones or a shielding material. If you could figure out the Bluetooth transmitter maybe you could clip a pathway to prevent it from working? If I figure it out, I'll make a post. Cheers!

    I see cloning as something you’d do infrequently but backups could be ongoing. For those of us with slow internet or or keep their pins offline, what backup solution do you recommend?

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  Před 4 měsíci

      You don't need the internet to do either of these cloning methods. Do what I do and leave the cloned drive hooked up to the PC. When you turn the PC on if it loads up ok, then you can leave it. If it has issues, then change your boot up settings to only boot from one. Then you just run Lazesoft whenever you want to. You could also just add another hard drive to simply copy/paste your entire pinball directory over to as a back up. Hope that helps. Thanks for the watch!

  • @jeffharkleroad3290
    @jeffharkleroad3290 Před 4 měsíci +1

    Does cloning keep the same Drive letter? I have 3 drives in my arcade cpu. 1st drive is a Ssd 512 OS windows that is fine. I have two 8T HDD I like to update to 2 12T for added games and roms. Do I just one at a time and expand the partition on each one? will there be any conflict when plugging in the cloned or it will run like nothing wrong?

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  Před 4 měsíci

      If you use a docking station, it will be exact clones so yes, the same drive letter and if it's a bigger SSD, it'll think it's now smaller until you do what I did with the partition. If you use the Lazesoft, you can change the drive letter but be careful as this will affect your pathways for your programs. You can use bios boot settings to switch which ssf will boot up on though as well. Hope that helps. Thanks for the watch!

    @rodryland1525 Před 4 měsíci +1

    Dumb question from a newbie... I understand how the docking station works with your existing drive being inserted into slot A and a new drive going into slot B. But in the second approach where freeware is used for the backup, where does the blank backup drive get inserted? Am I supposed to insert it into the motherboard?

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  Před 4 měsíci

    Will the clone drive be able to work if installed in a different PC?

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  Před 4 měsíci

      Yes and no. You gotta remember that this clone is exactly what the components in the PC need and the registry for programs so if the parts are the same, then yes. But if parts are different then it might not work or you'll have issues. It's really meant for a back up for your specific PC. Hope that helps. Thanks for the watch!
