      Honestly I think it's manipulative and unrealistic the way you talk about your course in this video. Promising six figure paychecks, fans, getting paid without releasing a game? Seems like you're trying to prey on overly optimistic young people who don't know the realities of game dev. I have no problem with you selling a course you made and I'm sure it has a lot of great info in it, this just seems like an exploitive way to market it

    That actually reminded me of the silent hill games... The game needed much time to render the buildings so the developers decided to add that fog in order to hide the game's long render times but in reality that fog is what made the game unique and more scary.

      It's not that it took a long time to render them, it's just that in that era we had a very limited polygon count per second, so developers came up with different approaches: Reducing the models' poly count, limiting the amount of entities on screen, despawning things fast, and in Silent Hill's case reducing the clipping distance (the distance at which things within the camera's frame will render), and the fog is just not to let players see things popping in and out of existence a mere 7 meters away. Bear in mind that Silent Hill wasn't the first game to use fog, but it was one of the only ones to justify it within the plot.

      BAck in the day Deus Ex predicted the future because of platform limitations. The World Trade Center was too much for PCs in 2000, so they just removed it from the New York City skyline and said it fell to a terrorist attack.

      Thats one of the reasons why the hd collection is so hated, apparently they lost the game’s code (somehow) and had to remake them from scratch, forgetting to add things like the fog
      EDIT: They had the code, but it was for an unfinished beta build of the game so a lot of textures sounds and effects (ie the fog) was messed up or missing. The studio in charge had to basically go through and attempt to fix as much as they could, and when it came time to patch the game in an update, only the ps3 version got it not the xbox version. So yeah, screw konami

      I was thinking the same thing, to be honest doesnt looks like a SNES game, neither Sega Genesis or early 90's Arcade. Looks more like those online web videogames like Happy Wheels. This doesnt mean this sucks, looks good man but is a way too diferent how a SNES game would be. Looks too modern for a 16 bits era.

    This doesn't look like a SNES game. Is it possible to get a 16 bit look with these dev tools?
    You also have 8 bit music.
    You can replicate the 16 bit music sound with old Casio keyboards.

      16bit was the peak of sprite art and music,thats why we never get new one today,people are not good enough

      @@VGC-cc4xt nah peak sprite art is now. civilization has collapsed and is a complete bust but our art and our storytelling has never been more incredible. at least not here in the west but there is some super dank manga out there. COVID jabs are worth it to experience the future of manga!

    I want to start off by saying this is a cool interpretation of the game, especially with the time constraint. It's cool to see "demakes" and how mechanics might translate to a more limited game style. That said, the only thing this has in common with Super Nintendo is that it's 2D, the color palette, particle effects, zoom, parallax backgrounds, and resolution --- none of that is even close to SNES. Feels weird to have even called it that.
    That said, the rest of the video is cool and entertaining.

    This is fun and all but this is not what the game would look like if it were on the Super Nintendo. You might be able to do the huge boss with the help of an FX chip, they were actually used in quite a few games outside of the ones that had 3D, but it still wouldn't look like this.

      Came here for this comment. It looks good on its own, but the SNES couldn't do a lot of these things despite the attempt to scale it down. Out of This World comes close. However, SNES could do much better sounding music than chiptunes, that's something you'd hear on an 8-bit system.

      Yeah. It should have used skeletal animation for the sprites, it should not have used physics either. Way less layers with alpha. No scaling the scene out like that either.

    Hi. First off! Thank you for all you do.
    When I went to college, my first major of study was Game Art and Design and it really felt like EVERY student I knew who was on my major felt like they were wasting their time. We all had dreams. We all had concepts that we felt would never reach the standards of the institution. We wanted to be indie devs but we were all in school studying the design and ways of what others “thought” was “what fans wanted” but WE were the fans!!! We knew what would sell better than our overlords and now, a decade later, anyone who stayed the course is still suffering through the developer grinder and not seeing their visions become realities. I saw so many change their ideas into webtoons or other media.
    Anyway, I could go on… but all I’m saying is that I appreciate your work. Subscribed today.

    It kinda looks like a riff on Limbo. The SNES wouldn't have been able to handle the camera zoom. Maybe the Neo Geo?

      This, Not only the camera zooms, but also the way the sprites work and that whole detailed ragdoll thingy etc., too, are *not* SNES-like.

    Great attempt, but the giant just stood there as you destroyed the mark points. You should have made the monster move from side to side throwing off the hero. It looked to easy. Other than that it did look fun!. Love the style! It would definitely be a great android game!

      Alot of work to get a demo going, would have taken a lot more animation which he fought with to get to that point. I'm with you though, if he fully finished these I'd buy them.

    I appreciate the effort it took to make this, and it is very cool. BUT, this would not run on a Super NES. Like at all. The giant backgrounds and the orthographic camera alone would've destroyed the CPU of an SNES. Also, NES-style 8-bit chiptunes on an SNES? Really? Like c'mon man, you're clearly very talented and know enough about video games to do this amazing video, and yet the end result looks almost nothing like an SNES game.

      I was thinking about this too and wanted to comment here to possibly keep the criticism in one place. An SNES game would not have ragdoll physics or a line trail that follows the player model. As for the music, definitely not NES 8-bit sounds. More like compressed sound-bits arranged on a 4-8 channel music tracker (idk), or at least on a DAW in the same fashion. Art style too is very 2000s like where the flat art style isn't much of a thing in a typical SNES game. And the aspect resolution too.
      Absolute great job on the project however. I'm no programmer and have one experience in game dev on RPGmaker. If you had a pixel artist on board, I could see this project in a similar light to Super Metroid.

    Honestly, I think basic climbing mechanics with basic climbing animations would've felt better and closer to the original game than this DK King of Swing method you came up with.
    Also, those coin pickups don't belong in this kind of immersive experience! 😡

    Nice but please change the Super Nintendo reference. This has very little to do with what was possible on the SNES in any way. Honestly this is PS2 performance so same platforms as it’s original version but in 3d

    Obviously this is an incredible feat given the time scale of the project but you really need to rethink your pixel art fakery. It looks really bad when pixels move around like that and it looks exactly like what it is (derezzed vector or vector-like shapes). I'm guessing you did something to the camera that pretty much negated the nearest neighbour stuff you went through when creating the art for the environments, presumably to try and fake the pixel look on parts that rotate such as the character and boss.
    Despite my gripes I'm still impressed and it's definitely interesting to see. Keep up the good work, I always look forward to your videos.

      @@aminthemar Thomas's videos are always presented far too nicely for me to believe that. I don't think he'd be happy if YT compression was messing with his picture quality to that kind of effect and I think he'd put in work to rectify it before publishing.       Like I said, I'm still impressed with what was achieved in such a short amount of time. My original comment was more for feedback so it can maybe be considered during future attempts of a similar nature.

    Hey Thomas,
    I really like your demake videos but I think labeling them as "Super Nintendo Style" was always kind of a long stretch. I'm glad you took the opportunity with this project to use a pixel-art aesthetic which brings it so much more in that Super Nintendo realm which you are aiming for. Great job!
    Of cause in gamedev (& youtube as a career) efficiency is absolutely necessary so I very much appreciate that you took the time to not only make this a visual showpiece but also adapted expanded the core functionality of your gamekit to pay more respect to the source material.

      Yup, exactly what I thought, snes hardware and software have specific assets as for graphic, mechanics, etc. It's really easy to label something but anyways...

    while shadow of the colossus did a lot with IK and pushed the tech, calling it a pioneer leaves out the actual pioneers who did it in games years before

    I've been toying around with the idea of a game that's half Sonic the Hedgehog and half Mr. Mosquito. It'd be a 2D game where you play as a tick, and the levels are all different kinds of animals. I love the idea of navigating on terrain that shifts in real time.

    This 2D vision could be soo much more! Have a puzzle game mechanic that dwells in a cave system. A way to unlock the gate to the boss. Like Prince of Persia meets Metroid. Then for the boss fights, make the target points exposed one at a time. Make them more difficult and last longer like in the game.

    Most indies don't make it so they make other things on the side or give up and don't finish. Thomas sell a lot of resources on the side so other indies would more-than-likely would have to do the same.
    Thomas could have also utilized a camera shader to keep that crisp look while pixelating it so it looks more for the Super Nintendo. 👍

      I was thinking the exact same thing. It definitely doesn't help that he took inspiration from an 8-bit indie game that couldn't run on original hardware. It's still cool and legitimately impressive undoubtedly, but it's definitely not Super Nintendo-esque.

    sick video. the original on ps2 was insane for the time. blew our minds. you do some interviews with devs right? you should interview Al Lowe from sierra. I could watch HOURS of that guy stories. He's pretty easy to get ahold of. Responds to every email. I even emailed him a few times.

    Algorithm for the win today, great video. You could break levels down like Mario, just going over crazy terrain for 30 levels, and then when you’re just about bored with the game a colossi. Essentially Mario with no enemies until the boss. Lots of potential for this as a real long play.

      @@matt1988ish The remake wasn't done by the same company, which means there's changes to the original vision and art direction. Team Ico knew the limitations of the hardware very well and designed the game around it. That includes the terrain design and the barren lands look and feel.

      @@thomasbrush through the use of SD and Flash carts ,, when will this be fully playable on an SNES console ??? I'm guessing it still requires some adaptive dev tweaking ,, then random uploading to a Free roms site to bring joy to the masses ,,,

    I think the only thing missing is that there should have been a grab node on top of the head, and also a flick or a force to knock you off after a period of time if you're not grabbing the node, and after destroying one of the points
