  • In this video I’ll going to show how to paint and weather this Custodes Telemon Dreadnought. More specifically, I will cover the process in 4 parts: Part 1, Airbrushing Gold; part 2, candy red; part 3, pin wash, and part 4, post-shading. Towards the end, I will also share what I consider the lessons I learnt from this project. This video is divided into chapters, so you can more easily review particular techniques if you like.
So, if you’re looking for a step by step tutorial on how to airbrush gold or how to apply candy red to your models, among other things, this video is for you!
NOTE: this is an ex-Members-only video, originally published in February 2023. I always make public my exclusive videos 4 months later after the original release. Enjoy!

I cannot stress how reassuring it is to see you had problems masking over tamiya clear red. I painted a Custodes Coronus transport a few years ago, and used tamiya masking tape over the clear red to mask it while I painted the gold. I repainted the tank FOUR TIMES as each time I removed the masking tape, some parts of the red would still be glossy, while others would have the same residue as yours does at 9:16. If the red was uniformly like that I would not have minded but it was very patchy with only some parts being affected. I thought the model was cursed! As previous Forge World custodes vehicles I'd had no problems with. I also could not find anything online talking about this issue. I tried leaving the red to set over several days, varnishing, and also using different tape, each time getting the same result.
On the 4th repaint I tried parafilm after seeing it recommended on another tutorial video and I found that worked fantastically. It has no adhesive and just sticks to the model through surface tension. It's quite easy to cut to mask just the parts you want so worked well for the curved surfaces of the custodes tanks. Would definitely recommend it as you can get it online and in ebay stores pretty cheaply.

Hahah, I’m happy that my mistakes are reassuring for someone! I knew about the parafilm but still chose this route because with my low Dexterity score it seems easier to handle. For the record, I had no issues on the other candy red models - varnishing with Tamiya Clear and allowing that to cure also did the trick. Thanks a lot for your thoughtful comment, though!
