I made some merch if anyone else wants to show their like for the Ocean. my-store-e79b5e.creator-spring.com/listing/i-like-the-ocean
Do you like the ocean?
I’ve been following your channel for maybe 6 yrs, not once have I seen you panicked or phased. A pleasure to watch the calm even in the storm. Thank you.
Wow, thank you
For real
I was about to say the same! I remember sailing my 28ft boat around the Solent and it was sooooo stressfull I sold the boat and stayed on land ;)
Sam has ice in his veins.
I've never sailed the ocean, other than on a Navy destroyer.😅 But I do sail a large, round lake in central MN, Mille Lacs. I've had to white knuckle it a few times. Once you learn to trust your boat, if you ever do, and assuming it is trustworthy, it gives you confidence, which to a large degree negates your fear of death. 😒
"I like the ocean" - Sam. Classic. :)
Should use it as a regular intro
Standby for the sequel, “Air is good.” -Sam Holmes 🤙
I was thinking the same thing lol
No made up drama! Dragging line, sail zipper stuck, wave came in, pumps not working, we went on our side. Sam...It should be all over in a couple of hours...with a smile on his face.
I laughed out loud
Sam has absolutely no haters... this is by far the most wholesome comment section I've ever seen. This right here is what youtube should be. Best channel, and best fanbase Mr. Holmes!
Sailor Sam is The Man!
It can get rowdy when he starts drilling holes 😂
That's why I call her the "Swiss Cheese Pickle"
@@chriskelly6559 weight reduction with an asterisk!
@@endid thumbs Up best channel and so authentic and content
I'm glad to see you're wearing that lifeline out in open water!
Yea, but what is the point if solo sailing? If you fall over and are hanging there you’re gone in a minute. If you keep it really short to stop you falling overboard it might help.
@@HakanSjoSam's Mom sleeps better when she watches the vids and sees him being safe!
@@Useless_Knowledge07 so true!
@@HakanSjo You could pull yourself along the line to get close enough to the boat to climb on board, I guess. But you are right, a shorter line would make life easier.
Love your work Sam, and always pray for your safe passages. Do me a huge favor and at least consider this for your personal safety.... rig your jacklines down the center of your deck from pulpit to mast and make your harness line short enough to keep you IN the boat's lifelines. If you get dumped and are dragging behind Pickle, there is probably very little chance that you will be able to overcome the drag resistance and pull yourself back onto the boat.
I watch a few other sailing channels. If any of them ever get in anything that rough, they seem like it's the end of sailing for them. Not Sam. He just laughed and said he was having fun!! You Go Brother! Love It.
Sam keeps things real. No extra hype or drama, just what is happening is happening and that is the secret sauce that makes this channel awesome.
Not a good attitude for a sailor
Thank you for continuing to live a beautiful and free life. I find myself ever longing a life at sea, I live vicariously through you. Safe sailing.
Dude looks like he's always smiling....I like it.
I love how you didn't drama that up. Just a smile on your face.
Drama it up like The Old Sea Dog? "Will I lose my leg?" 😂
@@mhub3576 Barry would have had a heart attack out in those conditions! Well done Sam
Outstanding video Sam. Also I have to say, the inclusion of ambient music was expertly executed, maintaining a perfect balance in volume-not too loud or overpowering. It was subtle enough to complement rather than detract from the content, enhancing the overall experience. Really felt like I was there.
Sam is a gem on youtube. Enjoy your videos, your personality, and your sailing expertise.
Great episode. Loved the chill music combo with the blustery weather. No drama, just sailing. And from a guy who spends much of the week on bed rest, thank you.your channel provides great comfort and encouragement to get me through this period and back on the water 🙏
Glad you enjoyed it!
One of the best channels on CZcams IMHO. 🤙🏽
Monopoly looks like a lovely place to visit. I like the area you showed on the video with no sounds of vehicles, horns or sirens. 🙂 Thanks for sharing. Hope you have a great time on the rest of your journey. Cheers. 🤗 ⛵S/V Cork~Texas🇺🇲
Nice to see the safety harness on !
Sam is so authentic and especially vigilant on safety issues!! (As compared to Phoney Baloney Sailing Atticus)
We would all sail with Sam. Unconscious competence, bombproof
@@caractacus22 Spot On!
When he was up front there AND the boat was a rockin and a rollin I did NOT see a clip on that harness though. Maybe I just missed it.
Lessons always learned. Love the game Monopoly now we've seen it's namesake. Wow the Pickle really pulled herself threw that gail and glistened on her way into port. You prove over and over again on those Waves you do LOVE the OCEAN. Sam; may your sails always fly as high as you want them, and your bildge pumps fuses hold the couse too... LOVE being too take a FREE ride in a FREE Port...

You're living my dream man. Thank you for these videos. I'm a middle aged, out of shape father and doing something like this feels so impossible sometimes. Your videos and the videos of other solo sailors keep me motivated. We are going to have an "empty nest" next year and I've signed up for sailing lessons next summer. I'm going to make learning to solo sail my new hobby.
You've paid your dues, so to speak. Go for it!
@@rerite2 Thanks man. Sometimes things like this can feel so unobtainable but I'm resolved to do it. Ever since I was a kid I've been fascinated with sailing and I don't want to be laid up in a nursing home years from now full of regret.
Complete Sam Holmes: smiling as he talks about pitchpoling. Ur the best! A real bold and smart sailor to head to sea in a storm to get off a Lee shore and a bad anchorage. You inspire.
So glad you are doing what God puts on your heart. Amazing adventures. This is for your next cup of coffee.
" it's about like the ocean and stuff"😂
Thanks, Sam. I always enjoy watching your adventures. Yours is a life well lived!
BRO! That was some sporty sailing. Great work!!!
Thanks! Always a positive attitude. Love it.
Thanks!
Sam, you gotta be one of the most laid back, chilled out, un-excitable dudes I've seen. Do you ever get stressed? I'm sometimes looking at your boat, conditions, and situation and thinking...maybe you should stress a little more! Like...perhaps that would HELP. But you always seem to manage. And certainly have a lot more miles than me. So....🤷😅. Just continued safe sailing - and best - to you. Cheers ~
Sam that was the roughest water I've seen you in and you handled it like a champ. You're a heck of a Captain Sam!
Yeah lotta swells there. Musta been a big fetch out there somewhere that was causing it because he was relatively close to shore. And this was in the Adriatic not the Med.
All of your adventures are very enjoyable, but your passages are what I look forward to most. Great video, serious sailing and some great decision making/problem solving - it all adds up to showing off the reality that is your life. In a word: Fantastic!
Sam gets more excitement in a 30 hour passage than most of us get in 30 years 😂
Monopoli looks like a pretty great town. I am surprised you didn’t stay a couple days.
WRT the speedy stitcher, totally agree. Will sew through anything… slowly. Invaluable.
That smile man ! one can TELL you like the ocean =) great video Sam !
The motionless lip, Bogard style.
Sam- The music was exquisite on this segment. Really enjoyed the low volume sound behind the turbulence. The drone shots of Monopoli are beautiful.
Glad you enjoyed it
I have a handful of sailors I watch on CZcams when they upload and your channel is one of the better ones, always love when you upload cool to see you doing what your passionate about
Great sailor! You love the ocean! So do I! Thanks 🏴☠️
Thanks for the extra sailing footage!
You are why I started sailing again after 35 years, Sam. Thank you so much!
Keep on being a badass!
Everyone should have a speedy stitcher. They're awesome.
Oh this is just what i needed to watch!! ❤️.. such a healing power the Ocean has!! Enjoy your journey.. Safe sails my friend!!
You have been capturing some great video's of the old structures that are very interesting. The mountains and scenery farmland very nice.
Two things: that 360 camera view is wild. "I like the ocean." That should be in a random place in every video. 😂
Nice that you can explain pitchpoling with a smile
Yoooo, I think that 360 cam actually looks pretty cool with your overall asthstetic to your channel. It fits in nicely. I dig it.
love the footage of the boat and waves, really captures the feeling of sailing. I feel like I'm out there with you.
Speedy stitch is definitely a must have! I’ve almost completely re sewn a boat top before with one. My most important project was while moose hunting in Alaska, my sleeping bag wasn’t keeping me warm, so I made a sleeping bag liner out of a military surplus wool blanket and stayed warm the rest of the 17 day trip.
Jacques Cousteau - his voice is in my head every time I put my head into the ocean. 🥰
Great episode. Warmed my heart to see you were strapped on.
Very well prepared, good job.
Quotes abound! "It's not that bad tho.." LOLZ "It's about the ocean and stuff ...... I like the ocean." "And ahhhh... I'm not looking forward to that.." "That's not going anywhere!" (famous last words) Best video in a while!
"Been reading this book. It's about the ocean and stuff. I like the ocean" 😂❤
Wow that shot at 2:26 and the soft music was so awesome!!!
Sam has been my inspiration to learn solo sailing. I have taken my little 28 footer out alone a few times but still no passages. I think I get more stressed out watching 10 gallons of water come into Sams bilge without a working bilge than he does.
How exciting, Sam! Looking forward to watching the future adventures!
I so appreciate your seamanship and sense of fun.
"I like the ocean.." That's an understatement!
Good to see you clip on and put on the proper gear when doing something hazardous.
Fearless to the end brother ( We are both American. ).....I've seen rougher seas on your channel but I can ALWAYS tell when you are a bit "clenched" in the middle of the night. Keep living the dream.
While cursing up a blue streak for several hours today I was thinking, “screw it, I don’t need a manual bilge pump…“ A few more hours of cursing, drilling, hammering, poking, gripping, screwing, twisting, poking, prodding, screaming… And I have a manual bilge pump again! 😁
Now I’m thinking of getting a second electric bilge pump! Thanks!
Sam you must have coconuts in your shorts! So cool calm and collected in gale force winds. Well done mate.
I bet that fuse really made your day!
The ocean to me is like NYC: A nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. You, on the other hand, seem made for it, taking everything she can dish out in stride. Amazing!
The seas can kick up fast around here. Short period chop. I will be sailing Sunday on the other side of Puglia (Taranto) Will you be around for a while? I would love to come down and say hi if you will still be in la zona.
I like the ocean. Words to live by.
That shot of the sunset against the sea before Monopoli was stunning!
The Speedy Stitch is so simple that it's reliable. It's great to be able to sail with your jib alone in such conditions. Well done for your bilge pumps. I suspected the fuse before you mentioned it - the two pumps being on the same circuit and no current.
Oh man after a trip like that it feels nice to be able to tie up to solid land and get things sorted again.
Learning a little about sailing. Sure love to try it for myself.
Such a class act Sam! Thank you for sharing your world!
Definitely Sam the "GOLD STANDARD"
10,457th view (Man, these pile up quickly, Sam - you got lots of fans!)... let's go sailing with Sam! WOOHOO! I'm holding onto the side-rails of my iMAC desktop. :0)
Avoiding running into an island sounds like a right-good idea. That deserved a proper 2.2K+ LIKE to be posted!
Sam you need a separate fuse for each of those bilge pumps. Not much of a back-up on the same fuse.. and with the self-steer maybe another hand pump in the cabin for the bad weather..
Ah good idea
Simply brilliant
Thanks!

😂😅
Hi Sam! I enjoy your cool, even your exuberance in rough conditions. Great vids - I look forward to them. I bought my Speedy Stitcher about 20 years ago when they were $5 here in the states.😂
"I like the ocean" so cool
That was a tough sail, great job. I grew up on Jacques Cousteau, he was a true ocean/science pioneer.
The Adventure continues!, Thanks Sam, you're the best. 😊
I would be so scared. Kudos to you!!!
"That's not going anywhere," said every guy from the dawn of time who ever tied anything down.
Sam, you are amazing under pressure, you are the pride of Oriental....free beer at the Tiki bar for you 😅
So glad to see you wearing a PFD. Nice haircut 😜
Your camera gyro really brings the swell to life.
Beautiful place Sam ! Great job with those waves ❤
Kool another Sam the Man video. My day just got a whole lot better.
Quite challenging Adriatic sea, wind shifting all the time. I miss it!
Another awesome vid, thanks for bringing us along!
I love big wind and waves like that Enjoy!
360 shots working great to give us a view of you making changes to the rigging and running the boat.
I have to say, I'm impressed w your Rolly Tasker sails!
Great episode. You should consider doing a quick "lessons learned" for how you diagnose problems and take steps to prevent them in the future. Like the mooring reel unspooling, how it happened and what steps you took to address it.
The inflatable PFDs are very comfortable, convenient, and non-cumbersome. I personally try not to use one, and instead use the old-style that doesn't need to be inflated. The reason why is because the one-time I capsized a sailing dinghy the life jacket inflated, as it was designed to do, and then rode up under my armpits, and made swimming very difficult if not impossible.
I assume they make them, but if you can get one with a strap that runs between your legs that will prevent it from riding up, that would be something to consider. Heck you could no doubt do the mod yourself rather than buy new.
Regardless, its probably a good idea for everyone who uses the inflatable varity to put one on, manually inflate it, then jump off a dock and see how it is and whether it hampers you at all. Could save your life one day.
I love watching your adventures - living vicariously...
You must feel super alive.,with the wind weather n waves,.,.Tkzz for sharing.,.,.,peace
Deadcat is working great Got blown over " Its not too bad" 😆 Glad you didnt quit.
Brilliant video Sam, I know those waves were much bigger in real life than they seem on camera: very exciting sailing!
Thanks for sharing brother, fair winds!
Chris 👍
p.s. Can you let me know what lapel mic you're using please?
p.p.s. I like the ocean too! 😂
Thanks. Its the DJI Mic. Ive tried several and its the only one that has worked well in the wind for me.
@@samholmessailing Thank you Sam, God bless and fair winds - hope to see you out there in an anchorage one day. 🙂
Great video! That should keep some people from going to sea in small boats.
Bro, those were crazy conditions to be that close to shore. Respect.
So Much Fun! loved seeing the sea state....good to see you getting a good ride!...and your destination looked worth it
There is an NYC Yellow Ferry called "Sam Holmes". When I saw it on the marine traffic website, I got excited thinking it was the Pickled Herring.
I’ve heard about that one. It’s a weird name for a ferry don’t you think?
Batten down the hatches! That's quite an adventure. Enjoy!
the strangled chicken squeaking would drive me nuts 😦
Great video Sam! You handled the situations with dignity and class!
12:36 - 2nd favorite 'saying of the day' - "uh...these waves are a little big." Makes me wonder if Sam could be related to Yogi Berra. :0)
At the 20:00 mark - used Settings option at .25 to slow down and really enjoy the drone & on-foot tour of this place.
Great video Sam.
A spirited sail ! Bari region is one of my favorite areas of Italy.
