📒 Show Notes 📒
You will need:
1️⃣ A pot
2️⃣ A glass lid larger than the pot
3️⃣ A bowl
4️⃣ Ice cubes
BEFORE heating the water
Step 1: Place the bowl in the pot.
Step 2: Fill the pot with enough water that the bowl floats.
Step 3: Remove the bowl and begin heating the water.
AFTER the water is boiling:
Step 4: Place the bowl inside
Step 5: Place the glass lid on top, upside down
Step 6: Add ice cubes on top of the glass lid (while it's still cool!)
As the water evaporates and becomes steam, it will collect on the underside of the lid and handle.
The ice cubes cause the vapor to condense more quickly.
Now we wait.
Once most of the water has evaporated, we’re ready to collect our distilled water.
Either wait until everything has sufficiently cooled, or use a towel or baking glove to remove the lid and bowl.
And here’s the final result! Homemade distilled water

"Just go buy some at the store" they all say in the comments... then suddenly when they're on a boil water notice because of a natural disaster and the store shelves are empty, they all come running looking for this video. I have store-bought water, rain barrels, a berkey-esque filter and pool shock, and I still found this video useful.
Thanks for the comment! ☺️
"Just go and buy it". That is what idiots do. I NEVER understood buying water ROFL. I have bought it less times than I can count on one hand mostly just to try it out. What I found out is that it tastes like water. A lot of what I do requires distilled water "For all intensive scientific purposes" and this is an easy method. The only purer way is through a distillation apparatus to make 100% pure water. The cleanest water is right from the ocean. Just have to remove A LOT of salt lol. Trained in upstate Alaska and drank some water that was so aqua blue clear you would swear it was perfect. Well... Nope. Got the shits for about 24 hours. Looks can be decieving! Always at the very least boil water and filter through some ash in a sock or at the very least, soak water up in some clothes and squeeze it out. Never dip a flask in the a beautiful stream and chug away haha.
So if I wanted to make essential oils would I put the lavender in the boiled water with the bowl floating on top?
@@dr.moniquedecicco-jones3156 I have no idea, I have never made essential oils.
I want to make it to remove chemicals from tap water and i don't want store water because it's in plastic bottles leeching into the water.
Don't forget to dry the outside of the bowl before you pour your distilled water out
Good tip!
My thought exactly!
Why? I feel so stupid right now
@@charliebling5773 because all of the stuff you are trying to get out of the water is concentrated in the water in the pan and you don't want to mix it with your distilled water when you pour it out
@@charliebling5773the surface tension of the water will cause it to drip down the side of the bowl, whereas a dry bowl is less likely to drip.
This video should be a template for all DIY videos (Or at least a link to the shorter version) option for those who scroll past the usual blabbing about the subject and get to the part where we're shown how to do stuff.😊
Thanks 😁
Yes! 🙌
Technically, you don't need to use the ice cube. The condensed water vapor (steam) has nowhere else to go after condensing, so it will flow down to the bowl with or without ice cubes. Since he is constantly adding heat, the ice cubes are not helping to condense the vapors, but are being melted faster due to the burner still being on. (Turn off the heat and yes, the ice cubes will speed up the condensation). - an analytical chemist.
Thanks this is super helpful!
But less space is taken up in icecube form.
don't listen to this trust me lol.
ME Too I couldn't see that the ice wouldn't have some bad in it too? Why do that? thank you Plus who's to say that the ice doesn't leach into the bowl and NOT processed?
Pro tip: if you filled your pot up with a lot of water, don’t wait too long for the bowl to fill up. It will sink and you’ll lose your progress. Just learned from experience 😔
Thanks for sharing - trial and error!
Thank you for that tip 🙏 sorry to hear about your sad lesson learned:(

@@waterfilterguruCould you put a few drops of red food coloring dye in the bottom pan to see if it transfers? It shouldn't but this would be a good test and hold distilled water up to light in a clear glass.
You could do tap water in bottom check with PPM Parts Per Million electronic meter. The PPM meter is about $10.00 - $18.00 my friend she has one a ppm and a ph meter. Tap water is very high PPM's. As FDA just said municipal - tap water causes cancer. I agree it's not fit for human consumption. You can check distilled water with PPM meter. Wonderful! So glad to hear it was helpful
Has anyone tested these home distilled water processes? How pure is the water, really, after the process?
That's a great question, we haven't actually lab tested the distilled water from this process for purity but that would be interesting to do to find out how well it actually works!
People can synthesize LSD and meth in their bedrooms but nobody can test a simple water distillation for purity? ?
@@slimallcock the meth and lsd produced in a person's bathtub is not high quality... lab testing is necessary to verify purity.
he said bedrooms@@MrJdcirbo
I suspect that splattering from the boiling sends non-condensed water into that bowl. You could test it with a TDS meter. You'd be better off having the collection of condensation outside of the system, then you only need to worry about splattering hitting the top of the condenser and finding its way out of the pot system. Boiling the water very, very slowly would be ideal. It was a rather slow boil in the video so I think it's generally a good method but not when you want pristine distilled water.
Thank you so much for this!
Glad it was helpful!
Good survival tips
thanks!
Doing this with a fermented mix of water, honey, and blackberries!! What could go wrong??

Why?
What happened!!!?😅
How long did it take to evaporate most of the water? And how long would it take to make 1 gallon of distilled water this way?
A long time... really long time. I'd recommend just investing in a countertop distiller, like one of these waterfilterguru.com/best-water-distiller-reviews/ but they still take 6-8 hours for just a gallon or two
forever

Only have one suggestion that maybe you tie a string to the top of the lid and put it in the bowl so that everything that's hitting the handle of the lid is going into the bowl
If I'm understanding your suggestion correctly, doing this would defeat the purpose of distillation and pose risk of recontamination of the water vapor
I looked this up to find out how to remove a picture stuck to a glass frame! Thank you for educating me! 😁
I think you might have commented on the wrong video
@@waterfilterguru no it recommend distilled water so I had to come looking 😁
feel free to polish it off with activated coconut charcoal, if you want to go the extra step to catch any gaseous chemicals that may have entered the pure water. I highly recommend it and if urgent you can also make your own charcoal too if you don't have access to but it at a store or online then make your own charcoal, it just wont be activated but works good too. ~someone who cares about human life.
Or even easier, purchase a countertop distiller which makes the entire process a breeze and includes an activated carbon polishing filter!
Thank you. It’s hard to find stores that sells distilled water near my place and I need it for my CPAP machine
I'd recommend a countertop water distiller machine
I am about to make my own vit c serum and searched fr this. Super useful🎉 thank you.😊 What material bowl u used btw ist ceramic?. Can I use a regular steel bowl? Please reply.
A steel bowl might work, but it might be too light and move around a lot potentially causing water that's not evaporated to get into it, which would ruin the process. That's why a heavier ceramic bowl is recommended. If you try it and it works though let me know!
@@waterfilterguru thank you for the reply 😊 gonna make in a few days nd will let you know.

thank you so much for this video, its really hard in the uk to buy distilled water, to order online for a litre its about £10 including shipping

What kind of bowl is that? How is it floating?
Can I use a plastic bowl or will it melt with microplastics?
It's ceramic. I would not use plastic
@@waterfilterguru All of my ceramic bowls are huge and heavy. They would probably sink. How is yours floating?
Good idea, use a plastic bowl.
Lol, in this way I will go bankrupt
It's more of a fun science project than practical application 😉 a countertop distiller is much easier and more efficient
how many minutes did it take to fill the bowl?
A while.. don't remember exactly but the process takes a long time

So is it a glass bowl that you have to use inside the pan or was that plastic?
Glass or ceramic. Do not use plastic

Very cool!
Glad you think so!
With electric costs what they are, the time consuming boiling of water in quantity until it evaporates will send your power bill through the roof. I'd just as soon buy it, like I did today at Walmart for $1.38 gal. Wish it was in glass, but oh well, can't have it all I guess.
A countertop distiller would be the ideal method to make distilled water at home, but it takes 4-6 hours on average just for one gallon
So i can make my own distilled water (videos on youtube) and with a glass jst put a pinch of himalayan salt and then im good to go???? Am i correct?
Theoretically, yes. However there are many better ways to get purified water like using a countertop distiller or reverse osmosis system
Why does the bowl have to float? Is it so the dirty/salt water doesn’t go into the bowl? If the bowl is tall enough would it be fine if it touched the bottom?
So that it doesn't jump around inside the pot.
If younare stranded at sea you can get fresh water from salt water if you can build a similar setup
Correct! Distillation will remove sodium chloride from sea water
Can't imagine having to do this stranded on a speed boat 😢. Assuming you can make fire
Great job, need a tiny bit of distilled water. 250ml or so
Did you use this method?
Can i do it in the sun when it's very hot without the use of gas?
If you can use the sun to get the water to boil for an extended period of time, then yes
Honestly, this video is useful but i was sorta of concerned by the amount of distilled water that was collected, the DIY is alright but seems not as effective, again I'm merely reporting my observation. Is there a way to collect more distilled water while maybe using this same process? Thanks
The easiest way would be to use a countertop distiller
Thanks late and the wife needs water for breathing treatment. Love is Love Peace X-RAY
How do you make enough to actually water a Calathea plant? Instructions say bottled water or distilled but I barely made any
Use a countertop distiller instead 😉
amazing
Thanks for watching
We can also use sun heat
If u think LPG is costly
SODIS (solar disinfection) will destroy microorganisms, but won't be effective for other contaminants like dissolved chemicals and heavy metals
THANK YOU for this!
I was needing to calibrate a ph meter for my homemade kombucha ! I ALMOST was too lazy' to undertake this ( ie: 'too many steps" ... go buy at store .... hahaha... silly brain
I thought GEEZE BRAIN WTF!!
Keep water boiling once put bowl in and ice on lid .... until gone... ✅️ OK
and I'm getting to it!
Right on! 👍
According to your description, you used tap water? It should be fine, since at school whenever water color was involved, it would be used with sink/tap water. Most people use distilled water though.
Yes, tap water was used for this experiment
@@waterfilterguru
Then you should be perfectly fine :)
Do you think that distilling DCM like this would work?
No idea what DCM is
Do you think this would “theoretically” work for destilling some home made liquor?
I couldn't say
Welp, only one way to find out then!
Does it have to be a glass lid?
No, glass makes it easier to see and monitor though . Metal lid would work. Don't do it with a plastic lid
what is the purpose of ice cubes?
Helps to condense the vapor back into liquid form on the underside of the lid
What type of bowl is used?
Ceramic
Does it matter that the lid has a little hole in it?
Yes, a hole on the lid could lead to recontamination
After I have gotten distilled water, can I use a coffee filter to further distill the water? I want to have a lower ppm. I still see a few particles within my distilled solution (water).
No, a coffee filter will only remove suspended particles, which should be removed during the distillation process.
Learn all about TDS and what TDS meters measure here: czcams.com/video/yHvdYWXiVzI/video.html
Your best bet for TDS reduction is a countertop distiller or RO system
If you’re getting particles large enough to see in the collection bowl, you’re probably boiling too hard and they’re splashing in. Just simmer the water. If you really want ultra pure water, distill it again.
That's great!
But then, the water vapor from the pot comes in contact with the water that was just distilled and defeats the whole purpose of distilling water, which majority of the time is because distilled water is supposed to be sterile...
The water vapor will actually be devoid of most of the contaminats! Distilled water is the collected and condensed vapor as the water is boiled. That being said you're correct, if you need absolutely sterile distilled water for a specific medical purpose, using this method is probably not your best bet. This will make water safe for drinking though!
@@waterfilterguruplease elaborate, like what kind of contaminants. I want to use this for a DIY.😊
@@I.am.hooked All contaminants that cannot evaporate with the water will be left in the boiling chamber. There are some VOCs that can evaporate, however, which is why a activated carbon is incorporated as a final stage for countertop distillers
@@waterfilterguru oh. Thank you.
Is there a special purchasing set for something like this? I have seen the Megahome one, but that seems to have unnecessary carbon filters and a plastic encasing for its high price point.
Yes there are plenty of countertop distillers that make the process much easier. Check out this article waterfilterguru.com/best-water-distiller-reviews/
I'd recommend one with the carbon filter stage + some VOCs can vaporize with the water, and the carbon will reduce them
What does this do and what is the difference
Water distillation removes the majority of water contaminants (with the exception of some VOCs which can evaporate with the water)
I tried this and it didn't work. I've tested the water with the particle meter and it was just as mineralized as my tap water.
😟
The ice cubes????
They most likely evaporated you say
Probably not
The ice cubes cool the top of the lid, causing the vapor below the lid to form condensation more quickly
@@waterfilterguru yes I know
I asked about what happened to theice cubes
They normally should have turned into water but there was none
@@waterfilterguru but thanks anyway
It s a great idea and if I ever need distilled water I will try it
Id put in a bigger bowl. Seems alot goes back into the pot water.
The water should drip down towards the handle, which funnels it into the bowl

does it have to be a glass lid?
No, the glass just lets you see how the process is going
Could you use this homemade distilled water in your cpap machine?
This would be a question for your doctor
How much does it need???
How much what does what need? Can you clarify your question?
It needs more
Oh so whatever gets in the bowl is the one that’s distilled and not the pot??
Correct!
cept you didnt wipe the bottom of the collection bowl off before you poured out you clean distilled water so it was contaminated with the dirty starting water
Wouldn't wiping the bottom of the bowl with a potentially contaminated cloth cause the same issue?🤔
No. The problem isn’t bacteria, it’s the un-distilled water on the bottom of the bowl running along the bowl bottom and into whatever you’re pouring your distilled water into. A quick dry with a clean towel prevents any issue.
Can we do with other lid inside goass one
does it remove fluoride
Yes distillation removes fluoride
Fun fact: When you do this, youre also witnessing all the 3 states of water, vapor, solid, and liquid
That's right!
Do you really have to use a glass lid?
A metal lid would work as well, but glass lets you see when it's done
The problem with all distilled water machines outside is that hot boiled water somehow comes in touch with plastic material. So even more harm.
I'm not aware of any countertop water distiller machines where boiled water or water vapor comes into contact with plastic components. All internal components are typically made of metal, and the vessel that catches the distilled water from glass.
Can the bowl be glass
Sure thing!
Well that means i can also distill alcoholic beverages?
I haven't tried that yet
This is cool but I'm trying to do it with the liquor and I need to be able to take the bowl out for a short period of time and then put it back in
Not sure if that will work, let us know if you try it
All that for about a cup of water! I’d by a 1/2 gallon of distilled water. Good to know though.

The electricity bill ???
That's one of the drawbacks of distillation, even with countertop distillers.
How long will it take to make 1 gallon lol
A long time...countertop distillers take 6-8 hours, and those are machines specifically designed to distill water at home
It might be cheaper to buy it, the cost of gas or electric to boil the water would have to be known.
Yep, a valid point. A countertop distiller might be even more efficient and cost effective
Oh no, my bowl is plastic. Also, how to do this without the lids exploding?
Do not use a plastic bowl. You can use a metal lid which will not shatter
@@waterfilterguru The plastic part was a joke. I don't have a metal lid sadly but my glass lid worked just fine. I needed to make some so I can water my venus fly trap.
Okay now how do you make enough to last a family of 4 drinking water all day every day?
With a countertop distiller waterfilterguru.com/best-water-distiller-reviews/
Or even better, a reverse osmosis system waterfilterguru.com/best-reverse-osmosis-system-reviews/ so you won't have to wait as long for purified water
Doesn't just boiling water and letting it cool make it distilled? This seems extra
No. Distillation involves capturing the clean steam from the water as it boils, then condensing it to water again.
would this work for alcohol or would you literally be making a missile in your kitchen?.. Seriously, wanna try it out with wine and see if I get a shot of brandy.
I don't know, I haven't tried
@@waterfilterguru I found a few videos where it absolutely does. But, You have to be able to set it to 175 degrees fahrenheit. So, I am assuming your saying cuz you duno how to set an actual temperature on a regular stove or whatever. which is true.
