The reason why Maleficent chooses 16 years is because that's when she was kissed by the guy. And she choose a sleep like death because she was attacked while sleeping.

    • @johanna5194

But she didnt put the "getting kissed by a guy" thing in it until the end. Maybe she just wanted the king to start to love her more, and then when she falls asleap he still kinda have hope that she will live, but she wont wake up and it will be even worse for him.

Actually in the original movie it was prick a finger and DIE but it doesn’t turn into sleep like death until AFTER the king begs then the blue fairy made the wish that she’d be awoken by the kiss Disney forgot how to Disney

She chose the age of 16 because IIRC in the animated film she wanted the people to get to know and love Aurora so that when the day comes it will be more painful when she dies or in this case falls into a sleep like death.

I agree Jolie acted that part well, but that whole part of the movie made no sense. There's no logical reason anyone would think he killed Maleficent anymore than if he had a severed hand or some severed horns, but he apparently got extremely lucky and everyone made him king anyways. Furthermore, Maleficent still had her magic and leadership of the Moors so she could just walk in (or appear outside the castle) the next day and prove he was a fraud, yet Stefan doesn't even see this as a problem. Then Maleficent literally does walk into his castle proving he's a fraud & apparently he gets extremely lucky again and no one (even the queen) cares. No knight or noble or judge try to dethrone him since he's an obvious illegitimate king with the evidence in plain sight. The story is just sloppy.

Sending Aurora out to live with the fairies is stupid, not just because the fairies are incapable of looking after a human child, but because it is totally unnecessary. Remember, the curse only covers the day of her sixteenth birthday- so she can basically do whatever she wants before that.
The sensible thing to do would be to raise her as a normal child until the day the curse is supposed to take effect, and then tie her to a table in a heavily guarded room. Don't leave her alone and don't let her get up until midnight and then voilà the curse is broken and you have a future ruler who knows something about ruling.

The act of Stephen throwing away the ring was meant to be a selfless act that meant a lot to Maleficent. (Because he had practically nothing but threw away one of the few things he had because he loved her)
Actually the curse isn’t arbitrary at all. If you actually payed attention to the story, Stephan said he gave her “true loves kiss” as a gift on her 16th birthday. Aurora’s curse reflects a cruel take on that.
Stephen and his wife probably got married right away and got pregnant almost immediately, and during that time Maleficent was probably hiding in morning healing from the loss of her wings. (Because let’s face it that probably hurt like hell)
According to lore Fairies typically can’t use magic on themselves.
Maleficents horn fashion is probably like women putting ribbons in their hair.

LeAnn Kennett even her starting to like Aurora isn’t just for the plot’s sake, but is explained if you analyze the gift that Maleficent gave Aurora. Also, a death like sleep (coma) is much more painful for the loved ones than just death, which gives the curse a darker tone.

*I read the book and believe many things should have entered the movie*
*This will be long, but I hope to enlighten some key points that weren't included or justified in the movie*
*Also English isn't my first language, so please forgive any mistakes*
*She wasn't their leader till her wings got cut off* Stefan wanted Maleficent's head, but he still loved her, but his greed was bigger so he cut her wings.
*After her wings were cut she went into hiding* to heal, mourn and out of shame (not only was she the only of her kind and the only "giant" fairy, she was without her wings which were her pride and the only thing she had to relate to her mother, who died when was just a baby. (She was told her green eyes came after Lysander, her father, and her wings were her mother's, Hermia)), so she didn't go back to the Moors.
*In that time she focused on her powers* (at first it was the nature helping her out of sorrow for her, but then she used that help to grow her powers) and became more powerful fueled by spite, (like she never realised her potential and now the hate made her stronger) and living in the "human side" making farmer's lives hell ( her parents when alive used to help the farmers with their stock, they were the first kind humans they'd met) She used to believe that there were good humans and was a pacifist because of her parents beliefs (they died in a battle while trying to persuade King Henry that they can live in harmony, when she was a baby), but after Stefan she agreed with what the other faeries always told her that humans were as rotten as they can come.
*She was the one upfront on the battle cause the other creatures did not have "what it takes" and* , nobody was brave enough nor had the strength to go into battle and because her parents stood front when they were alive too (in the scene with king Henry, that was actually Maleficent's first battle), she would go to try to persuade the humans of peace like her parents used to do, when they didn't feel like backing away the tree creatures came in her aid too ().
*After she met Diaval and heard that Stefan had become king everything clicked on her head* and when she heard of the rushed coronation and marriage and of the baby, she thought that it was just a matter of time till Stefan would come and do the same as king Henry, only that while Henry wanted the faeries dead out of faeriephobia(?) Stefan wanted the riches of that land.(in the beginning when Maleficent met Stefan he gave the gem he stole to Maleficent, but in fact he had two and took the other one with him.)
*She knew it and regressed back to the Moors to protect it* And because she came "Lika boss" nobody dared questioning her, hence self-proclaimed leader.
*She hated that he did so much damage to her, and he was living like he did nothing* and then he had a child, she had dreams of having a child, but she felt like she would never trust/love someone like that again, because of Stefan, she still had love for him. Actually in Stefan head Mal should thank him for being merciful and only take her wings.
*The three pixies went to Stefan even before Mal had returned to the Moors* , they wanted to engross in the lavish life of royalty.
When she (Mal) went to the Christening, she hid herself and the crow, the gem Stefan stole she gave it to the queen in a necklace, she saw the three pixies there and acknowledged their betrayal (hence "the rabble").
*When she was cursing* the sleep like death was because of her wings taken while was sleeping and because that's the moment a part of her died, The spinning wheel was because she was looking for inspiration in the room and saw a spinning wheel in there between the baby's gifts, she then turned to go away, but Stefan begged so she stabbed him with the kiss part, the sixteenth birthday was because that was the moment her 'true love's kiss",( he wasn't a good boyfriend, their relationship Only lasted because of her love for him, and her excusing him every chance she got.)
*Also they dated in secret* because the Moors did not approve of humans, when Stefan stopped coming she isolated herself heartbroken, and because she didn't want her friends to see her and find the truth, so when she went back it's almost like seeing your aunt that comes once every two years, and she's totally different, like 'how long did I sleep?') and was because of her true love's kiss(a lie), and also she said 16 because she wanted to madden Henry with the antecipation of the doom.
*He was afraid Mal would come back at any instant between those 16 yrs* and do any farther damage as it was easy for her to get in there in his baby's Christening, so he isolated the castle of the whole kingdom and sent the princess away.
*Mal then made the thornwall* , knowing that Stefan would come for her, and he indeed attacked numerous times unsuccessfully. The wall was strong.
*Actually she didn't even felt like watching Aurora* , the first time was to know her location provided by Diaval.
*But Diaval* when she would turn him back into a crow, he would fly straight to the baby, there was a time Mal wouldn't even turn him back knowing that he would go see Aurora, one day she got curious of it and went to see the baby, making nasty faces at her the baby laughed, she wanted to make the meanest face but the pixies showed up, so she fled. The part where Aurora is like 2 yrs old? And runs to her then holds her horns, actually was Mal sneaking on aurora, and scaring her for real with screams and all, then the baby cried and run like Mal expected except she run straight to her and hugged her legs, she wanted to be picked up, but Mal refused and she whales even louder making Mal pick her up, She reached for her horns but she snapped away, and put the baby back on the ground.
*Maleficent used to be a prankster* when young with her guardian, Robin (shame he isn't even mentioned in the movie), she would go to prank the pixies, while Diaval would fly to see the baby, then Diaval started taking her to see the baby.
*She started to get fond of "it" as she would call her* , and became "a hidden caregiver" till she was like 8-9 yo, because the pixies were able to deal with her better at that age, so Mal lessened her visits, knowing that she didn't need to be watched all the time like before.
*The pixies had no choice but take care of Aurora* because the king was about to turn on them they choose to take care of her, in order to not be expelled from the human kingdom they were getting used to.
*The first time Aurora is pushed into the Moors* was because of the soldiers cutting wood out of Mal's wall and they noticed Aurora looking around the wall trying to see through(she used to do it every night) Mal didn't want the soldiers to see her and report to the king (that would make him take bigger measures to protect Aurora.)
*It wasn't a spell but a yellow flower's polen* she used to make Aurora sleep, then deal with the soldiers, she couldn't leave her there or they would wake up and see her, she didn't have enough time to return her to the cottage without them waking and noticing them too, *so she brought her to the faeries side of the wall out of panick* , when she woke up she wandered in the Moors but Mal didn't show herself she wanted to see kid behaviour around the faeries, watching Aurora curious about everything made Mal see the Moors with the eyes she once had, so she made it a habit to bring Aurora whenever she'd wander the wall, only after a while did Aurora noticed Mal and she showed up.
*They bond got stronger* but she was stubborn about revoking the curse like Diaval would constantly advise her, she was denial of her affection for the girl.
*Because Mal had a bond with her enchanted subject* she could feel when Aurora's finger started to tingle and when she pricked it, just like she could feel every attack on the thorn wall, and when the soldiers started cutting wood.
*When Mal woke Aurora, she actually filled her in on everything that happened* her motives and all, she wanted to keep the prince's kiss out of the story afraid that Aurora would choose to live with the humans because of it, but Diaval glared at her so she decided no more secrets, Aurora processed everything and choose to go with Mal.
The rest is pretty much seen in the movie final minutes. The iron net the dragon, that big glass break, yeah...
*Hope most of the confusion on Maleficent's plot got cleared with this comment. I really recommend reading the book.*
*There's also the book on Ursula, and the Snow White's Evil Queen. I still haven't read those two, but yeah...in case they try to make those the remakes for the respective movies, I recommend you read it to have a better view on the movie.*

Another thing, iron was a weapon against fairies so she turned that against him by having his daughter injure herself with an iron spindle. It's a pretty genius revenge plot if you think about it.

Actually, at least some parts of the curse makes sense. She wants Stefan to live knowing there's nothing he can do to save his daughter, because the bone she threw was "true love", which she doesn't believe exists; therefore, in her mind, she's mocking him, "Haha, your one shot to save her is something that's impossible." After getting scorned by Stefan, she has given up on the idea of true love, so all she's offering, in her mind, is false hope. And 16 years means 16 years of agony, of knowing he's running out of time with nothing he can do. But also giving him enough time to hope that "just maybe...". As for why she keeps repeating that she's revoking the spell, it's because the spell is resisting; she keeps trying to break it but can't, because she made it impossible to break. Except she said that all who look upon her will love her (or something like that), which inadvertently include s herself, hence her almost immediate softening towards Aurora; she unintentionally included herself in the curse. And doesn't the curse have to happen? It's, "On her sixteen birthday, she will" not "If she so happens to be around an operating spinning wheel, this could happen if she's not careful". It's definite, declarative. She says this thing will happen, and has magically made it so it will happen, right? There's no avoiding the curse.

    • @slimpickens4742
      @slimpickens4742 Před 5 lety +9

If she included herself in the curse then it wasn't true love, and so Aurora shouldn't have woken up, but nice theory either way.

As other commenters said, you're wrong, but the main point is that there isn't a set list of rules to follow. Who said one should do this, and this and that in order to produce a good movie? They picked a fairytale and changed it up in a way they found interesting (as happens with pretty much every movie). In this movie, especially, they tried to show a contrast between their first movie and 'Maleficent' by showing a different 'villain', from a different point of view, and, therefore, an entirely different story. I see no fault in that - it isn't called 'The Sleeping Beauty Part 2', afterall.

A.M. You're totally right, and in the original too she also cursed the baby purely because they didn't invite her to the baby welcoming party when other fairies were invited to give gifts . (of course they didn't invite her because she was evil which she then proves by cursing an innocent baby with her own "gift"). I understand why people like this new version of the original story, but I hate when they completely change the plot of a classic just for the sake of pandering. Why couldn't they have just created a new character to give this type of story to instead of completing rejecting one of their own movies that helped shape Disney into the success they are now. If this was a movie about a completely new character then I'd probably like it more. But I prefer the original evil-for-the-sake-of-evil Maleficent that made her badass and likeable as a villain.

I've always wondered... The whole deal with her getting her wings cut off is a metaphor for her being raped; Though from Stefans perspective he is saving her life in faking her death so he can become king and stop the persecution of the forest.
So then we come back with the crow, where Malificent turns a crow into a human, which he obviously doesn't like, effectively stealing his wings and when he complains she reacts with "Deal with it, I saved your life..." So did she... Metaphorically rape him as well? Sure, he gets back his wings occassionally but she continuously steals them away from him over and over at her own whim, so is she a serial metaphorical rapist?
Is this a conscious decision or just a hilarious oversight of the creators?

Also, pro-tip to you evil faeries/witches, when you curse a girl to "prick her finger on the needle of spinning and fall into a sleep-like death", leave out the "sleep-like" part and just say she'll die. It'll sound much more dramatic.

Not in Disney there isn't. In Disney people can be born evil or at least have reasoning to be evil without making them look like victims (remember Hans?)
And there was a reason to crash the party. It makes Maleficent selfish, cold hearted, vain, and spiteful. Like a villain.
In old times, a Royal Family's coronation was considered a public event. Not just nobility was expected to show up, but commoners as well.
The king flat out forbid Maleficent from attending because (witch, evil, scary, unusual, pick your poison) reasons. Her showing up uninvited was reason enough to hate the king and want revenge by cursing his daughter.
"You think I'm not good enough to witness your daughter's coronation, well now I'm going to curse her to death (again not sleep, much more dramatic)."

What's wrong with simply being a jerk because you're a jerk?! Why does everyone have to have a sad childhood or an unrequited love behind them!? Is there seriously no OTHER reason why people turn out to be jerks?
What's that shit about people not being evil for the purpose of being evil? How about Hitler or Attila the Hun or Stalin? Did they have sad childhoods or were they victims of unrequited love too? How about BP fucking up entire Mexican Bay, was that evil done because someone in BP management was porked at a bad moment? There's greed and evil and murderous tendencies just for the fuck of it, yes! There are fucked up conceited people who'd fuck you up for forgetting their invitation to a party, they do exist in this world!
Also I have nothing against complex villains either but good gods can we then make them complex, instead of just "oh her fucker bailed on her"? It doesn't "explain things", it just makes her shift from scary to pathetic! The "old" Malefficent scared me because she was unpredictable and powerful, this new one makes me want to mock her! She's just an immature bitch unable to deal with some fuckeroo bailing on her! What, you can make *dragons* but you can't get yourself a new fucker?!
Look at Batman villains - those are some fine complex guys, why not write something like them; create a type of villain you can actually identify and be forced to actually agree with, like Joker or Bane (Nolan versions)? Instead of a pathetic bitch who can't deal with loss of a single one fucker?
I mean imagine if we got a back story on fucking Sauron and it turns out he actually forged the One Ring to marry Galadriel but she ran off with Gandalf and THEN Sauron turned evil!? Wouldn't that be a fucking SPIT in the face!?

      WTF?
the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen is hemoglobin.
... and the reason hemoglobin can bind with oxygen is because it has iron bound in the protein.
oxidized iron is by definition, rust.
so yes, you DO effectively have rust in your blood after it leaves your lungs. And... no, you don't need water to form iron oxide (rust), it happens faster in water because it acts as a catalyst. finally, your blood plasma is over 95% water.
exactly the reason why your blood looks red when you bleed. oxidized iron baby.
other animals use a different metal to bind oxygen with. molluscs like octopus, for example, use copper instead of iron in hemocyanin, which is what their blood cells contain. this is why it's clear or very translucent blue color. So I suppose fairies could theoretically utilize hemocyanin instead of hemoglobin... if fairies existed, but they don't so why bother just say it's friggen magic.

Hell, it doesn't even need to be something like that, it could be the forced loss of any innocence, for anyone. My opinion is that the wings are more than just that, they're her power and her fun and love and so much more. Her not being able to get those wings back is psychosomatic, or as "psychosomatic" as fairy tales can allow. Once she overcame those regrets and hatred tied to the king, she allowed herself to feel that love and fun and power and whatever else her wings meant to her, much like how victims of rape and sexual assault, or people with PTSD, etc. etc. can eventually overcome the burdens and stigma and everything else tied with it. Plus, the whole victim blaming thing that happens with rape victims and how everybody blames Maleficent even though she's clearly a victim didn't help.

Am I the only one who did not interpret that scene as rape? I saw it as this, Stephan knew that the old king wanted to kill Maleficent and offered the throne to anyone who could. Stephan took her wings to save her life.
For all we know, the crow could have missed a very important speech when he was spying on Stephan's coronation day, claiming that he would declare that humans and Moors would live in peace together. But the crow flies away too soon. Nine months later, Princess Aurora is born, and Maleficent shows up, and is like, "You're a bastard, I'm gonna kill your baby in 16 years, okay, bye!" So instead of getting a king who becomes a fully developed character and admitting to Maleficent what he did was wrong, but thought it was the only way he could save his childhood friend. Yet, instead, we get a character who grows to become bat$h!T crazy. And who can blame him when Maleficent threaten to kill his family?

One big problem I have with this movie is the fact that right out of the gate they say humans are greedy and evil. Ok, you could say we can be prone to that, but give us some redeeming qualities, man. The fairies seem to be perfect, omnibenevolent beings when, oh no, the big bad humans show up and ruin everything. I mean, Maleficent gets upset when Stefan takes a crystal, but what kind of crystal is it? Is it valuable? Why does he have to give it back, I'm pretty sure it's not living. Doesn't matter, humans are greedy! Also, when the old King goes to invade the Moors, he says no one has been there, so why would he invade a place, and risk so many casualties, without even considering what's inside? Is there even anything of value inside that is worth invading? That's irresponsible, especially for a king. But no, humans are greedy, so of course the king would blindly invade the moors, because that's what humans do.

It is important to have a balance, which is why movies that paint us as straight evil (or one side as irredeemably evil) like Avatar, where the company and PMC were unusually callous, and were looking for Unobtainium (yeah, that's not subtle), which is used for what exactly? Well, doesn't matter, just an excuse to tear up trees and kill Mother Pandora.
The problem I have with films of such ilk is that they make anyone who would even step on a flower as wanting to destroy everything, and it is overused. Humans are capable of all sorts of things: Hate, prejudice, murder, pain, greed, indifference and other terrible things. But we are equally capable of the good: Love, understanding, life, healing, altruism, caring, and other wonderful things. Showing both in the movie is important, the good and the bad, which will also makes the movie have better written characters, instead of flat representations.

Vlad Velasquez no I'm not ignoring that, yet even with all of what you've said "we have a good side too" ect. ect, we still come up mostly as evil if you look at us from another point of view. We see aliens as evil when they come for our planet, but aren't we gonna be the same when one they we try to colonize another planet with life on it? We'll be the evil aliens to them. Yes humans have both good and evil, have sympathy and lack of it, but the way I see it it's: good

Emil Georgiev Back to the Movie at hand, that is a very good point, and I not denying the King would be evil for invading the Moors. But the problem here is that they made the invasion irrational. If the Moors had source of magical power the humans could harness, or it had riches, or even if the humans needed lumber, it would at least be a reason to invade. For all the King knew, the Moors could just be a massive swamp. Actually, that would be ironic: get most of your army wiped out, only to find out it was a swamp. He could try and build a castle there, just to show them, but it would probably would just sink into the swamp (along with the 2nd, the third would probably burn down, fall over and then sink into the swamp, but the fourth one would stay up).

I'm actually okay with this reboot. Aurora isn't totally useless, they deconstruct a lot of the things that didn't make sense in the original film, and Maleficient's motives make sense here, as opposed for her just being evil just because she could. They should have named her something different in the beginning though, because I can't buy that she was actually given such a name by fairy parents who wanted humans and fairies to live together in peace. "Sure, let's want that and name our child with a name that specifically alludes to what we -don't- want! Nothing bad will come of this at all!"

The curse is because they kissed on her 16th birthday and stufan called it "true love". Both of them thought it didn't exist that's why she chose that just to mess with everyone's head.
The spinning wheel part is because Maleficant is a villain based in a witch in a old old story from very long ago, I don't remember why but she was judged or not invited to the royal party or something, so used the spinning wheel for something.
Don't say "no because in the animated..." because in the animated Maleficant wanted Aurora to die and didn't have a connection with the king, and was just pissed she wasn't invited to the christening or party or whatever, the only reason it she was asleep is because of the faires last blessing.

    • @medievalgirl002
      @medievalgirl002 Před 4 lety +1

Actually, the original story is probably just a variation on the evil stepmother/stepparent trope. Historically, children in royal families often did have difficult relationships with step parents because they wanted their own biological children to inherit, rather than their spouse's child from a previous marriage.
There were even a couple of cases of royals being murdered by stepmothers.

The Dashboard Changing the very basic premise of a story and the overall nature of existing characters to make your favorite character sympathetic, even though she's irredeemably evil, while ignoring the very glaring flaws in such a choice is common for a fanfiction writer. 11:15
Maleficents kiss was true love, aka unconditional love. The love only a mother figure could behold. And she just met phillip, so no way they would love each other immediately. Like in real life.
    11:26
Maleficent screwed herself over by allowing her a curse of being loved by all who meet her, so Maleficent loved her more and more as Aurora grew.
