  • Season 4 | Episode 79 | Fourth of July
    On this episode we head off from Los Angeles bound for Button Shell Beach near Whites Anchorage on Catalina Island.
    Button Shell is just about exactly half way between Two Harbors and Avalon. Our plan was to get away from the city and all of the fireworks so Camille's Cattle Dog, Mr. Steady, could have a peaceful holiday.
    We encountered more problems on this trip than any other trip I have ever done. From a blown out sail to anchoring problems, to a failed bilge pump and a slipped stern anchor..... And the issues continue into the next few episodes documenting this trip.
    So come along with us and check out how we deal with the problems as they arise.
    Thanks again to all of our Patrons, We are very grateful for your support!

    I anchored at White's a couple times in February and March of this year. Tucked it just inside the point between Button Shell and White's. Maybe 4 other boats in Feb, about a dozen in March. Gorgeous, with baitballs passing through, hundreds of pelicans, gulls and terns, even a sea turtle. I hadn't seen this video until today but, following your praise of his book I had bought it and emailed Brian Fagan as there were some light easterlies forecast in Feb. He said drop in 50' to 75' and put all 300' of chain out, so I did and didn't drag at all. He is a super nice guy. Hope to follow your wake out to some of the other islands later this month.

    You guys are doing stuff I've been thinking about for years and it's so wonderful to watch... About 25 years ago my wife and I became pretty avid skinny-dipper nudist at Black's Beach...and I thought the best way to do this was to get a boat like you have and go to these islands. where you could have seclusion... So I first found your skinny dipping video... You guys are perfectly calm and collected on the camera if it comes off very well... So great job on another video 👏

    Hey my dog started anxiety attacks when shooting, we got him out of it with treats, I would shoot then run out and grab a treat now he thinks we are out hunting and loves it. Whites is great in the winter can grab a mooring for free most of the time and there is nobody there so no dirty looks when ashore, in the summer we like goat harbor, little Gibraltar, two harbor and emerald Bay. My wife just started a CZcams, Jens America Adventure....great videos you guys keep them coming.

      Yeah steady really hates fireworks, its so sad. It doesn't matter how many times he hears them he will always be scared. We just try and avoid his exposure to them as best we can. Good luck on y'alls channel! its a lot of work but a fun way to keep track of memories!

    James a suggestion on anchoring and setting the stern anchor. Do the bow anchor first, set it then let out about 9 to 1 scope then toss the stern anchor then pull in the bow anchor to desired scope. It's what I do instead of using my dinghy. Unless it's tight! Was out at Scorpions on that same holiday week. We had 30 knot winds. Very manageable at the anchorage. Your boy on the Ranger 23 is having a blast in Hawaii. Killing it as I like to say. Don't know how long his inflatable will last. Lol

      The issue for us doing it that way is that our boat backs up in circles. so if i can't just back up in the direction that I would like the boat to point and drop the stern anchor or I would be doing it that way every time. Basically, if we are in deeper water I have to set the bow and the row the stern anchor in the direction I want to be pointing, ie into the swell, then I have to use the winch to pull the boat in line with the two hooks. Alberg 30s do NOT back up straight at all, small prop that is inside the rudder means that you have almost no steerage and what steerage you do have is overpowered by the prop walk.

      @@SailorJames that's probably why James from ATOM when he rebuilds them puts those outboards in them.

    • @leaveonlywake
      @leaveonlywake Před 5 lety +1

      @@SailorJames you are correct that our A30's don't like to back straight under power! To minimize it, try this - use bursts of power, just enough to get the boat moving, then put the motor back into neutral once she has some way on. Let her coast, mostly - it'll be slow, and you can even steer (somewhat ;) ) while she does that. When she almost has lost way, burp the throttle again to keep her moving, but take it out of gear afterwards. Prop walk is a result of torque from the prop, so using the prop just enough to get the boat moving minimizes the effects that torque can have on direction.
      How I set 2 opposing anchors, w/out using engine: pull up to anchor spot, drop primary and then douse foresail on way back to cockpit (or furl it, if you have a roller snarler). Push on end of boom to backwind the main, and fall away from primary/bow anchor. Ahead of time I have made ready to run enough rode to reach spot for secondary/stern anchor, deploy secondary when there. If you want to set it off to one side, sail to that side using main, deploy anchor before your primary forces a tack. Keep some tension on secondary rode as you pull up towards primary in order to get it to set as well as possible. When in middle of the two rodes, snub them off fairly tight, grab a beer while you have an anchor watch for a while, until you are certain you have two good sets.
      James/Atom Voyager puts in the outboards because they are lighter, cheaper, and easier than inboards, and mostly because they keep you from having extra holes in your boat that might let the ocean in. :)
      Keep up the good work!

    Another one in the books!, Wondering what your stern set up is?

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  Před 5 lety +2

      I have a large aluminum fortress anchor with about 150 ft of chain / rode combo for the stern. I want to set up a chain locker in the aft lazarette and a dedicated stern roller for the anchor.
