Hello Friends,
On this episode we experience every yachties nightmare; a scary sound from the engine bay.
Thanks to all of those to contributed financially to the engine cause 🙏🏻 your generosity made a huge difference and we are beyond humbled by your kindness.
My "Why I Would Never Have An Electric Motor On a Cruising Boat" post on instagram that I referenced at the end of the video. (Its easier to see both long texts of mine on a app, for some reason the second half of my text/commenting is not "pinned" on the desktop version) pC6KQwLFy4...
Big Thanks to Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie for all that you do!

James, you're NOT a idiot........ Ignor the knuckleheads. You're just a guy like the rest of us that have had all kinds of engine troubles in our lives. Fair winds my friend.

"If its gonna happen, its gonna happen out there"..Captain Ron!
Yeah bro ,it rarely happens at the wharf except for fuelling ,water, groceries, this one time at the wharf it was blowing so bad dogs were being blown off their chains and I was waiting for something to happen then the blow subsided but nothing happened, that was the only onetime that something could have happened in here but it didn’t happen so I’ll have to wait for it to happen again out there.
Imagine the luck of having a lady that is so supportive when everything sux 😉🇦🇺🌛🧚♀️🌠
A rare gem

Life’s a journey.. then your engine blows up. You just keep going
Yep yep
Lol that’s why it’s called sailing and not motoring
Good to hear you’re diesel is functioning again. “Advantage” is a solid mate.
Very grateful for Advantage Diesel
It's truly so hard to find a Diesel Mechanic that You can trust! I always do all my engine work as much as possible. You were very blessed to have found a trust worthy Mechanic like Dave! You did the right thing for sure. Good things happen to good people! Its great to see Your motor working better then ever before! Keep up the awesome work my friends. And carry on the Journey!🙏🏻👍⛵
Dave totally saved us 🙏🏻 beyond grateful for him !
Its not about sailing around the world but fixing things around the world. Keep it up, your an inspiration. Sending love from Nova Scotia, Canada. Keep keeping on
It is about sailing around the world, but with that comes fixing things around the world
Kudos to Advantage Diesel.
Good to know good people.
I did not have dropped valve on my Bingo card..
Kudos and good karma to Dave for being an honest guy.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Right on Captain James. I don’t check your channel every week but always get back to it when I have a chance cause you are one of the most upstanding solid individuals I know and I haven’t met you yet.
I’ll have my boat in the water soon enough and I hope to meet you someday.
Good info and very real. Thanks, fair winds and following seas.
James. A gentleman as always.
Editing and making videos is so hard I really appreciate what you guys do to make this possible for everyone to enjoy. THANKS
Thank you 🙏🏻
Hi James. This is Scott. My wife and I (and Stanley our dog aka Sea Nugget), met you at Two Harbors. We still love watching your videos!
Thanks for sticking around for so long !!!
I'm a firm believer in not paying anyone to do anything I might possibly do myself. Mechanics definitely seem to come in two flavors: total d-bags and living legends. Glad you found one of the latter this time around.
If you love puzzles, engines are your best friends. Always a new trick to play.
Life's about experiences. Some are awesome, some suck. Embrace them all as apart of life.
The most important "engine" of your boat is the relationship between you two. Everything else can be replaced. Take care of your relationship better than you care for your equipment.
You're absolutely right - it is hard to find a trustworthy and honest mechanic. Glad someone was willing to help you all and get you back on your journey. Smooth sailing ahead, James!
Good to hear ya back in the game. Behind a good man is a really great woman!
Much love.
OMG YOU GUYS ARE SO LOVED!!
I KNOW FOR ME PERSONALLY, YOUR VIDEOS ENHANCE MY LIFE AND WELL BEING, AND I SIMPLY JUST LOVE YOU, YOUR ADVENTURES, AND YOUR ALWAYS A TREAT FOR ME TO WATCH 🌈🌎🌈😁
THANKYOU FOR SHARING YOUR LIFE, LOVE AND GOURMET HEALTHY MEALS WITH ME!
ALL THE BEST TO YOU GUYS🤗

Dear James. You are absolutely Right in your Problem Solving. Sofa Sailors never understand, how it is with living with a very limited Budget. That will DICTATE always the course of ones actions. I LOVE how your Girlfriend is always touching you, reassuring you, supporting you. I am close to leave with my 33ft Sailboat Dpain, heading towards Vancouver Island myselves.
Congratulations ! Well done ! Keep your faith !
So glad to hear the issue has been resolved. I really appreciate all the information you have been sharing throughout your journey. Best wishes and safe travels.
And
Seeing this video makes me SO THANKFUL THAT YOU GUYS ARE TOGETHER 😁
LOVE IS SUCH A BLESSING AND RHONDA I LOVE YOUR LOVE FOR CAPTAIN JAMES 🤗💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎
So glad you got through this challenge. Love the support you have in each other. ❤️ Great video….so sorry you had to live through five weeks of stress for this one.
Glad to hear the engine is fixed. I have been watching this channel for a few years and I am glad to see you are back on the water.
That was as well of an engine saga as could ever be explained and included all the questions I had at the end. Great stuff James! Thanks n fair winds!
I love the way Rhonda is supporting you James🎉
Glad you've sorted the engine, just as well you've got mechanical knowledge because rowing that boat would be back breaking 😂
😂😂😂
Good work James. Realistic and resourceful thinking supported by awesome sailing 👍👍👍
Biglove James ! Thanks for keeping it real. 🤙
Glad you got it all sorted. Love your videos
Can’t wait for more adventures to come! Best of luck to both of you!
The sun always shines after a bad storm! Hope you solve this issue soon. Big hugs from Spain!❤
Long since solved
Thanks for this long video James. Very informative
Great video documenting the life style.
Hi James and Rhonda, good to see you’re back on track again. Hopefully everything goes well now adventure before dementia give up the good work guys keep loving each other cliff from Queensland Australia
Job well done team. Onwards and upwards.
Well done you two, good to see you got it all sorted and a great shout out to that mechanic guy.
He'll of a story with a great outcome. You now have way more in depth experience-based knowledge of your own engine. With that comes recognition of what that thing wants in advance to stay happy and we'll fed b4 the hunger and slow hard working demise sets in on its way to total unexpected collapse.
Buying a new engine is great for as long as the maintenance is ahead of failure which needs to start from day one. . Preemptive maintenance with an older engine is allways cheaper and more satisfying than buying whole new ones. The hands on willingness by the owner to intimately know his own engine comes with the bonus of creating a healing effect on that noisy smelly fabulous metalic lovable little freind and the sweet music it makes going uphill thru the pass. Its similar to the loving way you feel about Alberg 30s and Triatia in particular. Lots of love to you both beautiful souls. Mark from NZ.... spiritual classic auto marine mechanic and Kelly Peterson 46 owner in Whangarei hungry to start the off shore life at age 74. (I saw Triatea in the town basin without knowing u had gone to Greenland... would have loved to had met you)
Thank your for your videos.
I said it before
You are a person that does not give up.
Look at all you have accomplished and all the obstacles you have overcome.
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Well informative, thank you Sir.
Dude, I love your straightforward style and approach to dealing with adversity. Glad it all worked out in the end. My hope is to start cruising in retirement with a similar size/vintage boat. Learning so much from your videos. Keep on keeping on.
Many worse places to be stuck with a problem like that than Lake Mac. Sounds like Dave is a top bloke.
💯💯
Nice to have friends.
So sorry about your engine problems. Wishing you clear sailing from here on out.
James, you handled it a lot better than I ever could. Sorry you had to go through all that. Hats off to Dave solid dude.
Good to hear you got it solved already looking for more video of the new places to see.
Onwards and Upwards Thanks to Dave and James on a BRILLIANT video
Well done advantage diesel. Great Australian company. 👍👍👍👍👍👍😄😄😄😄😄
The BEST
It’s really great to know he’s finally getting his leg over on calm days.
Glad it all got resolved, and that you were not injured in a dangerous spot.
And blessings upon Dave as others have said!
Appreciate the very detailed breakdown of what went wrong, I learned a lot from this. Safe journeys up the coast :)
“Detailed break down” describes the engine and my mental state 😂
Many months ago I saw your solar panels mounted outboard port and starboard on your 30-footer. It's a great solution for a small boat. I've done something similar by mounting 2 200-watt rigid Renogy panels on my Pearson 303. It was quite an effort to find mounts for them as there were only 2 places in the U.S. that sold them. The result is beautiful. It keeps both 200AH LiFeP2O4 batteries topped off. Thank you for displaying this mounting method. 🎉
👍🏻
Good stuff! Enjoying the content!
This looks like a really good tech episode.... Sitting down and getting ready to watch.
That was a big one. (We were frightened.) Bless good people. You folks are the best. 😎😎😎🥰
Glad it is all sorted.
Really interesting watching.
Thanks 🙏🏻
Well, what a video, just got to admire your tenacity, you have that ability to work it all out and push through to a successful conclusion, well done you and especially David, as you stated, difficult to find good honest ones, best video this week😊
We got so lucky to find Dave, he had all great google reviews so I just walked into his shop
Dave, a man among men!
Absolutely!
Good friends are worth their weight in gold! Happy everyone helped so much!
My heart is full to bursting
Epic! I"m so happy for you guys that you were able to fix another engine issue! Crossing my fingers that you'll make it to south east asia in time. Big hug from Sydney.
So happy things worked out for you. Cruising presents some far out challenges sometimes and you're very exposed to unique situations. You handled this one very well. Props to Dave, as people like him are a godsend for sure. Engine sounds great.
H8 James and Rhonda, have just started watching and feel your frustrations.
I know what its like to have engine failure at critical times, stress to the max.
Cheers Kevi
You're inspiring James. My wife and I are planning on doing exactly what you are doing, just waiting on her to retire. Love how far you've come and how bright the future is!
Dave was God-sent! Nice guy too. Happy ending!
Yachts and yachts of fun !
Yay upload! Boo engine trouble!
Wow, what a journey! Aggravating and frustrating but as you mentioned, it could have been horrific..Great job to all that helped out!
We are counting our blessings for sure !
Wow quite a story/adventure you two! Certainly glad it all worked out, sail on.
Yeah super glad it’s behind us 😂
I like the time lapse of you and Rhonda putting the engine back together
Damn James. Great episode. Much respect for getting through that. Hope the engine remains bulletproof for years to come 🙏
Also happy for you and Rhonda’s friendship develop into something greater. Looking forward to more adventures
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
just finished the vid.....you have kept going and now we are all better off for it. great to see you are both getting back on with your adventure. I can't wait for the next chapter. who knew cruising meant you'd become a diesel mechanic!!
No better feeling than final success.
Wow 5 weeks laid up,sorry to hear that. Thank God for honest people like Dave! Like we say Boat...bring on another thousand! But hopefully the rough part is behind you, now to continue with your adventures! Stay safe my friend! From the east coast of Canada 🇨🇦!
Diesel too. Surprised. What a hassle but at least you are now an expert at diagnosing and pulling the engine. Great job. Onward and upward
Love your attitude& rational…I am a olde boatie.. 76 yrs…have a 60 ft timber pearling Broome vessel…do all my own mantainence mechanical …electrical..carpentry..I live onboard and love it..more credit to you & Rhonda for getting on an realising things happen…

Awesome Video once again, thanks for the upload James! Oh my God that sounded so damn good in comparisson to your previous videos after the fixing.
100%
Just watched the videos where you bought that engine and cleaned out the fuel tank. Sorry for your difficulties and glad you got it sorted. Safe travels.
Congrats on the engine. Lived off grid with my life built around diesel genset for 20 +years. 53:36 White smoke will most often be head gasket or valves. Black will usually be injectors.. You chased the problem out logically. Kudo's. Have a hybrid diesel/electric junk rigged schooner. There's a learning curve for sure and it's taken some doing but I feel pretty secure with my system. Fair winds
Hell ya glad y'all are up an running keep up the great videos be safe out there you guys enjoy yourselves
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
James
Sounds like that engine is good to go, and should last for years and years.
Rebuilding an engine versus a new replacement s always ‘an issue’
Both dollar wise and the mental anguish.
I have a 35 year old Yanmar 3HM 35 F that starts perfectly
But every part on the outside of the block, exhaust elbow, motor mounts, seawater pump,
Coolant pump , and alternator Have all given me problems.
It’s a difficult choice, Repair or Replace…
And I agree an electric motor in a cruising boat is not yet practical.
Keep on keeping on.
I didn't like the way it sounded before, just got a feeling but I knew it was going to blow so could be something in my head. I really like the way it sounds now. Saw a little smoke on the last startup but probably normal . That said, I picked up on some things you should be aware of that are unrelated to this failure but will probably cause you serious grief in the future if you can't figure them out. If your engine is starved of fuel either by a poor lift pump or a filter problem (growing crap for instance) and the pressure of the fuel delivered to your high pressure pump is low, that pump can be damaged. This is why a lot of diesels have a fuel pressure gauge between the high pressure pump and the lift pump. In some Cummins products it was a serious problem (bigger engines) and it cost a ton for a bunch of people. Everything from Dodge trucks to Busses and fire engines were dead in the street. The high pressure pump blew from being fuel starved and since its lubricated by diesel fuel, BOOM !
I have seen a pretty good top end rebuild done at anchor. BUT, they had a mechanic who showed them EXACTLY what to do and how to do it ON CAMERA ! The Mechanic was amazing and did many things other than work on engines. He does boat tours with his huge steel boat which he built. It was in the Caribbean.
WHAT A COUPLE...great stuff james. bad luck with the kiwi crooks, better luck with the Aussie good guy. bless you both and fair winds.
100% agree James with your decision making process about going down the route of sorting out your existing engine vrs replacing with a new one. It makes logical and especially financial sense.
In my own situation, I am extremely grateful that the previous owner of my boat though did replace it with a new one (we only have approx 160 hrs on the clock, even though we have been sailing on the boat for around 3 years since), as there is no way I could have afforded to replace the engine.
Dave sounds like he is not only honest but knows his stuff. Such a shame that JB over in Opua didn’t do the right thing by you in the first place.
Thanks also for explaining the diagnostic process you went through as this I am sure is helpful to all of us with older cruising boats with diesel engines, and especially if one doesn’t know too much about such engines.
At least now you can look forwards to your ongoing adventures. Cheers Dave
Yeah I hope including ALL the info and video I had would help people with less experience see how I worked through the issues and how we got the repair sorted
great video
Resilient, resourceful & clever…great vlog…congrats.
Thanks 🙏🏻
Thanks!
Thank you 🙏🏻
I had a similar issue once that was hard to diagnose on my boat motor. Like you I found that while it was traumatic its amazing how many side issues got sorted at the same time, for me it was completely renovated fuel system from hose clips to injectors, renovated cooling system including heat exchanger and both pumps etc etc. Then in my case discovered it was all down to a simple cheap fix (exhaust elbow was blocked). Some clouds do have silver linings, motor was never better after the trauma settled.
Hi James and Rhonda, I only watched your sail around Lake Mac yesterday, and this morning I see your new video on the trouble you have encountered and been stuck for weeks. It is a gut-wrenching feeling have a breakdown at sea and leaving you on the mud was a bit funny. What an ordeal for you both and you were so lucky to be in sheltered water. As you said, it could have been so much worse. There are a lot of sharks out there and they are all not in the sea. Good tradespeople are getting hard to find and sometimes, when you need it the most, you get lucky and discover a real gem. Happy sailing up the cost. I sure you are about to discover some very pretty places. Great time of year.
Yeah Dave said the mines take most of the great diesel mechanics so it’s hard to find good help these days
great to see yous in lake macquarie my home lake. if ya need anything let me know
I was watching you before i had my own ship. I'm still watching! ❤
Pleased worked out for you both. Acceptance of the “realities of cruising” seems to be the best approach to keep it all in perspective and keep going. Hoping you enjoyed your time in my home town Brisbane recently. Was stoked to spot the Good Ship T on the hook in the Brisbane River one weekend whilst out riding. Fair winds.
We absolutely loved Brisbane !
Onya mate.. glad ya came across a good Ozzie mechanic - electric engine on a cruising boat - they must be havin a laugh.. he he he. Well done James - safe cruising and good winds..
We lucked out finding Dave
James, you have always ended up fixing everything that needed fixing , it’s just difficult to get to the cause sometimes lots of love to you both ❤
💯
We just finished changing engines in our 50 ft steel ketch. Did it on anchor. Luckily it was in USA where I purchased a good used engine for less than $10k. Glad you got it back up and running!
Woof...sorry about the engine troubles ..sounded like a different engine ..or maybe healthier..good mechanics are hard to find sometimes ..especially honest ones whew..glad you made it out of there to follow some new lines to your next adventure
The engine sounds sooooo amazing now !!!!
James And Rhoda, truly glad your horse is kicking again. The World certainly needs many more kind, honest and helpful minded people like Dave. Finding anyone you can truly trust to do a reasonable job much less the a jam up great job is so difficult. Word of mouth is not always but most times the best way to find someone to do a reasonable to jam up job. Looks like you did well this time and you give Dave much more business by promoting him for his off hours assistance. Thanks for that as good Homo sapiens need to be rewarded. Jim Rodgers
We feel very lucky to have found Dave, it took very good care of us !
