- Almost a year after stages across the world went dark, Birmingham Royal Ballet, in association with Impermanence, is proud to present Empty Stage, a new short film dedicated to the ambition to keep ballet and performance alive. This film is a tribute to the industry that we all know and love.
Song written and performed by Benjamin Scheuer.
Directed by Roseanna Anderson and Joshua Ben-Tovim.
Featuring Carlos Acosta and Birmingham Royal Ballet.
#EmptyStage is a celebration of the performing arts and artists. This new film is Carlos Acosta's first major digital commission for the Company. Working with artists from different disciplines is a deep-rooted desire for Carlos; whilst continuing to nurture and highlight the world-class talent in his own company, there is also a strong pull to do the same through cross-art collaborations.

Thank you keeping up our spirit! Now Cuban vaccination is ready and I guess in Birmingham people are getting vaccinated too. So soon.... we will fill stages and much more! ¡Muchas gracias Carlos y su colectivo!
BRB - thank you.
What a lovely dedication to BRB and Carlos Acosta
This made me cry. Theater is home to so many of us, whether we're performers or lovers. It's a place we feel accepted and loved. Thank you for this.
Beautifully shot
How much we need those who will not waver in their belief that the show will indeed go on again. Carlos himself seems to be an inspiration.
That was stunning just miss this so much had to watch it twice as well and shared with friends. Let’s hope we can all sing soon when our theatres are open again and we can all celebrate together
Puts into words all the grief performers have felt for so long... however even in our lowest points we make great art about it. Beautiful.
Not just the performers
Beautiful!!
Absolutely beautiful, heartfelt production!! So relevant for the times we live in. Uniting the gift of talent!! Suburb.
Beautiful. Thank you. Watching this, sorting out screws and bolts in the National Theatre of Scotland Stores, having a quiet greet to myself! Waiting...just waiting...to get up and running again. xx
Just beautiful - so moving!
A beautiful representation of the fight to keep going, whether ballet, opera, orchestral, backstage. We have to believe they all will survive and regrow xx
Beautiful
Weeping. Copiously.
Thank you.
Such beautiful work, love this. So excellent!
As an arts performer, I feel like I haven’t been able to grieve the loss of my passion and livelihood. This moved a piece of my heart towards feeling able to. Thank you so much.
A reminder of the beauty of Ballet and what we are missing at this time. Giving us something to look forward to, hopefully in the not too distant future.
I grew up in theatre and had my first performance on the stage. At least we've CZcams as a stage to perform on
Beautiful. Poignant. Can’t wait to see Cinderella et al on stage and hear that wonderful music live, again.
Let's go back now!
So beautiful has to watch it twice. Didn’t realise how much I missed ballet and the audience applause.
Well done BRB. A very moving piece of work. Thank you.
BRB have been friends of mine for a long time. I’m so grateful to know such brilliant souls and this video is just the thing we needed. Thank you for keeping the magic alive, you are not forgotten. ♥️
Very poignant indeed. You will be back! I was delighted to see how many people with different skills were involved in making this short film. There is so much talent behind and in front of the stage as well as on it. Thank you.
Beautiful and so moving-thank you.
This is a beautiful piece of work showing the true talent and sincerity of all of the performers and technicians. I so look forward to the BRB's safe return to live performances attended by audiences. Thank you!
Very beautiful, and very sad. BRB I miss you so much!
So traurig....und doch schön, vielen Dank!
This is so beautiful and had me in tears, very moving. You will return to the stage and when you do the applause will be wonderfully deafening.
Indeed! Well said.
Such a beautiful piece! So positive in a very difficult moment. The gift we have in ourselves won’t die...I hope all the performers will be able to return soon to the stage. All the best
Beautiful clip! Hope everything comes back to normal soon ❤
Beautiful. As if seeing the Rep and the prompt desk was not already enough to set this stage manager off, hearing the applause and then seeing the University of Birmingham campus (where I now work) appear at the end tipped me over completely.
Our students, like all those in the arts, are the future- and they’re raring to go and full of so much passion and creativity.
Thank you. #WeWillBeBack
Wonderful, so very poignant- so looking forward to live ballet performances in Birmingham when we can. ❤️
Thank you so much Jane! We cannot wait to be back on stage again. 💜
Never going to happen, babe. The scamdemic was designed to destroy all public shared meetings, experiences.
I almost forgot that this was almost easter season.. Beautiful promo film and hope everyone can get to theatres to enjoy the arts, in all forms!
Beautiful BRB ❤️ - so looking forward to live performances by you and others again. Really cannot understand the negative comments made here - we’re all weary so let’s delight in this
Beautiful. Thank you so much.
Beautifully done, one and all. Thank you.
Absolutely beautiful !
Amazing work by Impermanence and BRB! ❤❤❤ The show will go on!

Ojala sera posible bailar otra vez pronto
Breathtaking
Thank you so much 💜
This is VERY good.
We're so happy you think so. Thank you 💜
Let's pray it won't be for much longer.
Beautiful and poignant.
Soon, that stage will re-engage.
Should have finished at 3.51 ! Good to see the Birmingham Rep theatre there, albeit empty.
And here we have again Carlos Acosta talking about ART and not about RACE. Wonderful!!!
I searched for an image and found this
Benjamin is a Norah Jones fan I think
oh he sure is!
Please, I wish I had the lyrics of the song.
Dusty chairs. Sagging curtain
Music stuck inside the page
Costumes back inside their boxes
All that’s left is an empty stage
All that’s left is an empty stage
All the dances. All the spotlights
Memories of a golden age
Fade to stillness. Fade to darkness
All that’s left is an empty stage
All that’s left is an empty stage
Ghosts of melodies with beauty and flaws
Echo in the echo of the echo of applause
In this place, we’d find a mirror
Love and grief, joy and rage
But what was here is here no longer
All that’s left is an empty stage
All that’s left is an empty stage
Ghosts of melodies with beauty and flaws
Echo in the echo of the echo of applause
In this place, we’d find a mirror
Love and grief, joy and rage
But what was here is here no longer
All that’s left is an empty stage
All that’s left is an empty stage
This is...... terrible.
Ha! Glad to hear you're still around, we've always been fans x
