- CUNY TV's restoring of the classic public television program, "Day at Night", which aired from 1973-1974. In this episode, host James Day talks with Anne Baxter. They discuss her early drive to become an actress, her equally early introduction to show business at the age of 13, the rapport between audience and performer and her experiences acting on Broadway and in feature films.
CUNY TV is proud to re-broadcast newly digitized episodes of DAY AT NIGHT, the popular public television series hosted by the late James Day. Day was a true pioneer of public television: co-founder of KQED in San Francisco, president of WNET upon the merger of National Educational Television (NET) and television station WNDT/Channel 13, and most recently, Chairman of the CUNY TV Advisory Board. The series features fascinating interviews with notable cultural and political figures conducted in the mid 1970's. (Taped:05/17/74) - Zábava
Talent + class + elegance + beauty + sex-appeal + brains = ANNE BAXTER.
She was elegance personified.
Yes indeed ! A very classy lady !
I love her voice!
I really loved her watching in Ten Commandments... She was gorgeous, looking very beautiful in this movie 😍
her acting was amazing in the razor's edge. but TTC will always be the personal favourite
she's got a great voice.
Love her as Neferteri :))
A brilliantly talented, enormously charming woman, who has never been properly appreciated. How sad that we lost her too soon.
+Rafael Storm Yes, 62 years old was so young. I was very sad when this happened in November 1985. By that time she was starring in the tv serie "Hotel" . It was a very good show.
+Francis Dubarry It's recently been released on DVD... and I just watched the episode in which Victoria Cabot dies. I couldn't stop crying...
i hated her so much In All About Eve, that goes to show how amazing and convincing she was, Outstanding Actor
She has one the most beautiful transatlantic accent without sounding fake and old-times
If this was 1974, she was roughly 49 years old. Her vibrance, beauty and voice make me love her so much. What a wonderful interview.
She was 50 or 51
She was born in 1923.
I’m assuming that her husky voice is from smoking. It’s sexy in a way, like Kathleen Turner’s voice.
Such expressive eyes... I won't forget her role in Moses as Nefetiri...
Tooo good actor
The film was called the Ten Commandments
I adore her. Met her when I volunteered for The Thalians in the 1970’s. Have a photo with her which was taken of us there and still have a note she wrote to me. Such a brilliant beautiful human being! ❤️💐🌹
I watched the Ten Commandments as a child and the scene where she begged Moses to spare her child's life has been seared on my memory ever since. She was magnificent. The scene where she scorns Ramses was also spectacular.
"The Ten Commandments" is a MASTERPIECE. And yes, it has held up wonderfully well.
Her voice is inimitable..shes amazing..purr like kitten
They're doing The Ten Commandments tonight. She's always my favourite thing about it.
+Rosannasfriend Same here! lol
She was gave that movie life, lol. When she tells Moses she'd kill for him I die laughing. I know it's not suppose to be funny but she delivers it to well.
I didn't imagine her that locacious and happy to live! Very childlike and smart.
Fascinating woman and actress,
You speak the truth, Kemo Sabe !
Great actress and great beauty.
I always liked her.
She wasn´t over the top in "The Ten Commandments". She was wonderful.
really? i hadn't noticed
@@danielstanwyck2812 Well, she was. That´s your problem.
most people in a Cecil B. DeMille film are over the top.
@@haintedhouse2990 Rubbish.
@@probyful Betty Hutton in the Greatest Show on Earth - so over the top i thought she was gonna have a stroke.
I'm in love. What a beauty, what a great actress.
The way she spoke of the joy of her career and her life....it always came through in her performances.
There is an episode of Colombo that she is in that I LOVE!!!!
I think that is my favorite ‘Columbo’ from January 1973
I could listen to her all day :-))
Me too !!
What a surprisingly delightful interview! Anne was so intelligent, strong, charming, and lovely--a beautiful human being!
Well said and well put ! I agree 100 per cent !
She was such a beautiful woman.. nowadays we see few women of such kind..Ten Commandments was her best film.
I just love the way her voice sounded.
I'm such a fan and admirer of Ms. Baxter as an actress. I became acquainted with her in the mid 90's watching replays of Columbo in which she was in an episode as the guest star with Peter Falk and then years later on the AMC channel watching classic movies in All about Eve. She was brilliant and so convincing in both. It saddened me deeply when I looked on the internet a few years ago to see if she was still active and learned she passed on in the mid 80's unexpectedly. I was a child in the 80's and was too young to have known. So sad. May she rest in peace. What a brilliant actress.
I loved her in "The Magnificent Ambersons" as Joseph Cotten's daughter. Also Monty Clift's love in Hitchcock's "I Confess" (1953).
She’s very interactive and beautiful.
She was wonderful! Loved watching her performances. She is truly missed.
she must have the best american accent l have ever heard ...from the uk
Amazing actress!☺️😍👍
So great in The Ten Commandments
Very pretty lady. R.I.P.
I have always been in love with Anne since first seeing her in The Ten Commandments at about age 7. Of course it was her beauty that started it. Seeing how positive, relaxed, and enthusiastic she is here makes me love her even more. Her charm is infectious. And yes, she was still very physicaly attractive here in my opinion. She kind of reminds me of Brando and George C Scott in being somewhat disillusioned with labels and awards in her profession. Seemed like a very interesting, intelligent, and genuine woman. RIP 💜
she has the most marvelous voice and joy
I agree ! I adore her enthusiasm !
Amazing and so beautyful on Ten Commandments... Great Actress!
Love Anne ,❤️
I love all of her movies, but my all-time favorite was The Ten Commandments ("Oh Moses, Moses, Moses" lol). She was also on the 80s tv show Hotel as Victoria Cabot, the owner of the hotel.
This is a terrific interview. Mr. Day is acute and intelligent. Ms. Baxter is a revelation.
"Musical theatre is a real bitch" legendary hilarious quote 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
She was such a great actress with an aura of confidence, elegance and class.
This program was absolutely amazing. Thank you for posting it.😁
A great actress.
Loved her in ten commandments
OMG i wish i could met her :[
Yes her and yul .
She's most memorable to me in The Ten Commandments. I remember that time when I hated Nefretiri so bad...lol...Amazing actress I must say.
Chrissy Red - How could you think, even for a moment, that this authentic, genuine and heart-felt, intelligent interview with Ann Baxter could have come from any source other than her sheer joy of the life she's been able to lead?!!! So many actors of her age have become embittered and lost the kind of joue de vivre that she openly displays here.
I browsed all the comments below, and, of course, there were many well-deserved accolades for her best films, such as "All About Eve" and "The Razor's Edge"... and her riotous over-the-top Egyptian princess in "The Ten Commandments". But it's those little, and often not-so-memorable films that I remember her best for: Chase a Crooked Shadow, Carnival Story, Bedevilled, Yellow Sky, I Confess. I loved her because, no matter how trivial the script or how shallow the character assigned to her, she attacked every role as if it was the greatest part she'd ever been offered. She always gave 100% to the role, and she always lifted the film to a level it could never have achieved without her. Hollywood was lucky to have her!
She was beautiful in ‘The Razors Edge’
she was especially wonderful in the confrontational scene with Yul Brynner in the throne room after Moses and the Egyptians left Egypt.
Anne Baxter was wonderful, thank you very much.
Nobody ever mentions I Confess. To me, her best work. I cry every time watch her in it. So heartbreaking.
Anne Baxter has been one of the best actresses ever...what a screen presence she had. Even with the fine talent she had, it must be so that the actors natural ways and tendencies add to the performance too...she had beauty upon beauty, a smile that would make one weak; her voice I cannot explain but perhaps a bit as Pat (?)...darn, her last name does not come to mind (John Wayne's friend in, "In Harms Way?"...but she & Anne B. had a voice similar; just wonderfully unexplainable.
Anne was co-star with Dana Andrews and had Walter Brennan in a 1941 film, "The Swamp," a dynamic and fine film, where it appears Anne is 18(?) Oh, that we had actors like that now...nobody stands out to me these days.
Yes, Anne and fellow Oscar winner Patricia Neal remind me too of each other ! Thanks for your perceptive & insightful comment.
No one has mentioned this delightful black and white musical story (film) "You're My Everything" made in 1949. Set in the late 1920s, Anne Baxter was the perfect flapper, dancing the Charleston on a table in one of two silent films, and the other one resembling Clara Bow vamping her boy friend. She was really adorable in those scenes. I'm one of the few who appreciate the 1920s and early 1930s especially the orchestras and popular music from that era. I would like to see her scenes played again on You Tube from the movie "You're My Everything." Anne Baxter is really cute and a pleasure to watch her kicking up her heels. I guess most of the people commenting prefer her in more exotic roles such as The Ten Commandments. I loved her in You're My Everything.
Wow, she still leaps out of the screen. Such a woman!
That she does indeed.
What a charming, elegant lady. A lesson to us all in how to grow older gracefully.
great actress.
Interesting to watch. She was quite a strong character.
She was a beautiful lady...
Saw her tonight in Yellow Sky on starz westerns... cute as sweet apple pie.
Rip
RIP Ms. Anne Baxter💔😭💜
I watch the Movie, the ten Commandments today on Blu ray, the Movie calls in German, die 10 Gebote. This lovely, intelligent Lady is brillant in this Movie and the whole Movie is brillant.
Her performance in "The ten commandments" was good, but in "All about Eve" she was simply breathtaking!
Para nosotros Eva al desnudo exelente trabajo hermosa actriz saludod desde Argentina.
I LOVE ANNE BAXTER TO HER ACT IN TEN COMMANDMENTS HER EMOTE TO HER ROLE AND HER CHARM BEAUTY ANY I LIKE HER
Truly enjoyed this interview. What a remarkable personality. So incredibly candid and wholesome. May both she and her interviewer both R.I. P. They seemed to be good friends.
Anne Baxter was extraordinary in All about Eve, she was an incredible actress, it's unfortunate she left us too soon, she was far to young just 62 years old. We could have meny more years with her, and more movie roles and television shows. But we have so meny great movies and roles to remember her from.
Stroke at 62 yes very young
Enjoy present moment and don't disperse. Great advice for anyone in life and most of all anyone performing.
You can tell what a tough cookie she is. Necessary to be a Hollywood actress, especially at that time.
I could listen to her voice for days!
This was just so wonderful to watch! I love Anne and what she said about the love connection with your audience is sooo true!
Look for the Banacek episode 'If Max Is So Smart. Why Doesn't He Tell Us Where He Is?' to see the incomparable Anne Baxter in a fun television performance.
Anne Baxter was great in "The Ten Commandments" as"Nefretiri" and she was so beautiful too in this film. Her performance was excellent and she deserved an Oscar nomination and also deserved to win. She has been inmortalized in this great film which we can watch year after year on the ABC broadcast. Concerning "All About Eve", of course, she deserved her nomination as best actress for her performance in that movie. No matter Bette Davis was nominated also for the same category, Baxter also was in the same level in her performing. After all the movie was all about Eve, i'snt? Someone here asked about "Zelda", this was a guest performance Anne Baxter played in the 60's serie of "Batman". The episode title is "Zelda the Great" Baxter played "Zelda" in here she was an adorable magician. Later she appeared as guest star in another episode in this "Batman" series.
Francis Dubarry
Nefretiti??? Really??? She is great but come on.....hollywood is a real trip into the wierd place.
Красавица. Очаровательная.
What a doll and an immense talent!
She was one of the greatest actresses of her time. I always preferred her as a blonde. She was able to play a plethora of characters. Her Sophie in "Razor's Edge" was well deserving of the Oscar, and her Eve in "All About Eve" was legendary. I found her a little "over the top" in "The Ten Commandments", but she was still thrilling in it. I saw her on the stage in the Noel Coward play to which she alludes here. It was in 1976 and she was onstage with Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy. Great!
There is only one woman alive today who reminds me of Anne Baxter. And she portrayed the Captain of the USS Voyager.
Yes!!! Kate Mulgrew
she is so stunning here...and grand daughter of Frank Lloyd Wright on of my hero's in architecture
Thanks for sharing this great interview with a great actress. Loved it!
Saw her first in, "The Razor's Edge", just saw her again in a few glimpses of, 'All About Eve'. I admit she commanded a certain beauty, a beautiful voice. I decided to look her up on wikipedia and come to find she died a few days before I was born. Being the age I am, 'mid 30's', and to know there are certain films of which none of the cast are alive anymore, leaves me with a bit of a sad feeling. Admiring some one and their work and knowing you weren't even alive at the same time... It's just a weird feeling I can't really describe at the moment. hmm..
Anne Baxter. The real thing. Heartbreaking and magnificent in "Razor's Edge".
Yes, but All about eve is one of best movie ever, best women cast ever Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, Celeste Holm and Thelma Ritter, that year is on other one movie of all time Sunset bulevard, and All about Eve have the best screenplay ever, i love both movies
what a charming and intelligent person.
I totally agree ! I enjoyed watching this interview so very much !
Amazing in "The Razor's Edge." If her performance doesn't move you then you are lifeless. Just an incredible performance as Sophia McDonald. She was perfect in the scenes with Tyrone Power. And later she did another little gem, which can actually watch here on YT, "The Luck of the Irish." Love her in that movie, too. Again, a very touching performance.
She was also stunningly beautiful in that role
Of course, she was great in All About Eve and The Razor's Edge too. I loved her in those films as well.
28 mins is too short. I feel like a whole chapter of Human History lies within her mind. I could also listen to her for hours!
So charming and vivacious.
Baxter is marvelous in one of William Wellman's very best films, "Yellow Sky" (1948), giving an emotionally nuanced and capably bad-ass reading of a relatively uncaricatured frontier woman, an exemplary depiction among Westerns of the pre-"revisionist" anti-Western era. Also a stunning film to look at, thanks to Joe MacDonald's rich cinematography.
Such a bright and classy human being! 🩵💯
I liked Anne baxter and her movies were good
I have a notion to second that emotion ! She was a beautiful lady and a gifted actress !
This was fun to watch. Where do you people get all these awesome old footage. Love her!
I so loved her voice!!!!
Wonderful interview
She was sooo hot during the ten commandments movie I love her
IGosh i always totaly in love with her when i was a kid ,i wanted to be like her! she was wonderful in The ten commandments.
So real, so confident, so sexy, so talented... one of THE BEST!
Love you Anne 😘😘
I found Eve Harrington to be the most convincing and menacingly hateful villain of all time. I find myself fearfully repelled by the utterly amoral grasping threat of Eve. To be, even as a spectator, so viscerally affected by a fictional character the best possible evidence of Anne's brilliance. I doubt there has ever been a greater acting talent.
Have you seen A Guest in the House? Anne plays another chilling narcissist. It could be reprisal of Eve Harrington only it was filmed before All About Eve. The havoc and damage she causes is terrible, and she once again skillfully depicts a dangerous and poisonous interloper. Liebestraum was played in that movie too! Based on those two movies I came to dislike Anne Baxter, conflating her characters with the person. Then I saw her in The Razor’s Edge and a couple of minor roles and realized she’s not always evil. This is a marvelous interview where she is shown to be multi-faceted, warm, and insightful, with a great sense of humor.
Great interview! Thank you
What a great interview! Some very deep issues are touched here if you listen closely. Notice not one word, idle gossip is mentioned. Frank Lloyd Wright anecdote sounds real--not a contrived for a laugh. Miss Baxter is honest and breathtakingly refreshing!
