    I had mine for the 2 years and I agree with the thermal paste and been brave since it is a very scary job to do. I got mine with a 128GB m.2 and 1TB HDD and 16GB of Ram so far the specs are good maybe by year 4 I upgrade to 32GB and to a 1TB SSD

      16gb dual channel (matched 2 modules) is still great. Maybe just upgrade your HDD to SSD or the 128gb m.2 SSD to 512gb or more. That's likely to make a difference.

  • @Aitor
    @Aitor Před 4 lety +2

    Thank you so much for the informative videos about the Dell G7 7588! I have the same machine and I find it to run extremely hot while in idle or just simple web sessions. Average temps are around 68 degrees Celsius and highs on 98!! I will probably repaste the CPU and GPU with a new thermal paste soon as I do with all my machines. In comparison, my Asus G750JZ runs very cool. I have seen most of of your videos and there are few questions I would like to ask you.
    On your "Managing that HOT i7 8750H while Gaming" video, you use ThrottleStop and only adjust the Turbo Ratio Limits to 30 (max turbo to 3000 GHz) but on Bob of All Trades's video that you also recommend, he takes a different approach and changes other areas like undervolting, etc. He also recommends to dial down the Power mode of the battery from Performance to somewhere in the middle. This last step helped my machine to lower the max temps in general as the clocks are not at max all the time. Why the discrepancy on methods used on your video and Bob's one?
    But here is another question.. You also recommend to use Dell Power Manager. On what settings do you keep it while gaming and what settings do you use the W10 native Power mode?
    Thanks for your help and take care!

    • @kakemboluide
      @kakemboluide  Před 4 lety +1

      You're very welcome! Glad to know my video was very helpful.
      With regards to the difference in methods, I personally find that as long as you limit the clocks it doesn't really matter what Battery Mode you run, the Dell G7 can sometimes downclock it's CPU very aggressively to as low as 0.800MHz so I'd also recommend getting rid of Intel DPTF to reduce this. In general though, different methods work best for different systems, so just keep experimenting and you'll find something that's suitable for you.
      I keep it on Ultra Performance mode while gaming because on other modes once the GPU reaches 77 deg C, it begins to lower it's clock speed to maintain this temperature.

    • @Aitor
      @Aitor Před 4 lety +3

      @@kakemboluide thank you so much for taking the time to reply. On my G7 while gaming, the temps are actually not that crazy, around 75 ºC on the GPU and 85 ºC on the CPU. What worries me is the CPU temp while idle. After undervolting the CPU, its higher temp got lower but still reaches pics of 88 to 90 ºC, a tad better than before. And summer didn't even start yet... I agree with you that keeping the Dell Power Manager on Ultra (only available for BIOS 1.9.0 or lower as far as I'm aware) gives the best result as the fans work at 100% speed. I wish there was a way to control the fans while in idle so they spin just enough to cool the CPU without the vacuum cleaner sound of the Ultra Setting at all times. I found a few threads at notebookreview that deal with this so I might take a look there and see what I can do. I will leave the links below just in case some one finds it helpful.
      Thanks again for all your wonderful videos!!

    • @Aitor
      @Aitor Před 4 lety

      @@MOZARTF haven't try yet, sorry. I'm busy with work at the moment. If you have your G7 with BIOS 1.9.0 or lower, I recommend setting the Dell Manager on Ultra as stated before. The fans actually run at 100% only when the CPU gets hot. While idle or doing light stuff like watching youtube, the fans still spin which is a good thing but they are not noisy at all. Temps fluctuate around 50 ºC with slight max peeks of 70 ºC, much better than before.

Wanted to put some thermal pad onto it, but I am unsure how the thickness of the thermal pad I should be using or purchasing? Any idea, good sir? This is reassuring that I can do something to improve our family lap top we bought around 3 years ago. It's used by all of us for regular web browsing stuff and for a little while it was running Sims okay but now we run out of space every time Sims needs to update and I've offloaded pretty much every app I can. Ended up having to uninstall the Sims which was a gift and not received well by my teenage daughter. What would be the first way to improve our situation so we can run games again? RAM? SSD? These are foreign language to me for the most part but I got an idea of where they are in the laptop thanks to youtube videos...

    I bought my G7 back in the summer of 2018 and had no clue it could handle 32 gbs of ram. So thanks for that tip! I upgraded it to 16gbs at the time and never really had too much of a problem. With it. But I will definetly upgrade to 32gb. I probably need the paste too because my fans run all the time and oscillate every 10 minutes with just the desktop screen on and no programs running. I mainly use it to play shooter games and was looking for a way to get better frames per second. I bought a 240mhz 30'' HDMI monitor and I never use the laptop display. One upgrade I would recommend that isn't really an upgrade is to take the laptop apart every 3 months and clean out all the dust inside of it. Especially the fans and heatsink. You would be suprised at much stuff can get in there even in the cleanest of environments. Good tips N STUFF

      Hi, there's only one M.2 slot in this laptop, it supports 4-lane PCIe NVMe drives, so the full 3500MBps read/write is possible. The second drive slot only supports 7mm thick 2.5inch drives, so make sure they are of that thickness or less before purchasing.

    • @agenttexx
      @agenttexx Před 3 lety

      Alienware makes a similar machine to this and it DOES have dual M.2 NVME slots. I'm not sure if you could replace the motherboard with the Alienware board. Regarding the SSHD, as long as it is a standard 2.5" laptop drive it should fit. But you can find standard SSD for about the same price as the Firecuda. My 7588 specs are 1TB NVME Samsung 970 and 1TB SATA Samsung 970, 32GB of RAM. I have dual monitors running through a Thunderbolt Docking Station.
