I really wish manufacturers would include a driver and fireman figure. Nothing more unrealistic than a driverless loco barrelling down the track.

Some manufacturers do at least here in the US Like Broadway Limited Imports and MTH (Which bus under new ownership) there are those in other scales that do it as well but it's not universal across the board.

Gotta agree. My Smokey Joe came with a driver n fireman and while I didn't get around to painting them til recently they're now one of my favorite parts of the model due to the open cab showing em off so well

If Airfix and other model plane makers can put a pilot in airplane kits for the last fifty years we should expect crew too.

This is where I think the smaller companies really shine as they produce really fantastic models that don’t cost an arm and a leg and I’m thankful that companies like dapol and acurascale for these models

Great video Sam. I noticed out of the box, when you were testing it's crawl some of the tender wheels were stalling. Model Railways Unlimited noticed the tender pickups were acting as brakes so he slackened them off. Maybe that would improve its performance?
I wonder what would happen if you switched it's tender with the Mogul, if the connectors are at the same level?

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Před rokem +7

Yes I noticed the same - I guess I could look into that, but I prefer the good connection personally! I'm fairly sure this uses the same tender - or at least a very similar one - will have to double check!
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

When I saw the thumbnail after coming home from work I was like: YES a new Sam's Train video and also a Dapol model review. They are probably my favourite Manufacturer nowadays. Good price for what you get, good performer, easy to maintain and run as well as amazing quality. Definately deserved rating. Just like you said the finish is so good it looks like a diecast boiler eventhough it isn't. What a beautiful model. Hats off to Dapol as usual and to you for making this fantastic review, Sam 👍👍

Hi Sam, Mike and Adi reviewed this wonderful Dapol Manor class with the same enthousiasme as you with a similar note. This is indeed a winner. Agreed the paint finish in satin gloss stands out and the slow speed is remarkable. Value for money is to applaud for !! This is proof that manufactures with a structured management are more capable than the 'great names' out there. And even produce more refined products accessible for every model railroader. This is a remarkable steamer ! Wonder how the Accurascale will compare ... but it already seems a very close match. Thanks for sharing - I really enjoyed this video ! Happy model railroading. Really impressive! I'd be interested in seeing some sort of breakdown on how much money manufacturers put into making their model trains in terms of production and design, it's very strange how other manufacturers have models with the same or less features than this one and still price them higher.

I work in manafacturing not for model railways but but big railways and submarine parts etc but now hot it all works , , and in all honesty these models probably cost around £25-30 to make , the real money comes in product development and research and more importantly tool making the tools for these mouldings there realy not cheep , I’ve seen tools for other items sell £3,000-£12,000 so you can image a rough ball point and as this is mass production there is a fair few tools. Not only this production samples will cost more and the all the staff who work on the project need to be payed as well , so that’s where the money goes , and I have to say £140 to me is a verry fair price , especially the fact it’s a new tool , the fact of the matter is is there still making a substantial profit on these models and there in for the hobby as where hornby are just in it for the money , I’m afraid Charing £180 + for a model with toolings made 30 years ago shocking quality and lack of care is just disgusting and shoes the harsh reality of what the company had become !

I have now bought one in BR lined black livery and am very happy with it but I have noticed something odd and it's my manor runs more like your GWR mogul at 50% speed compared to your manor. I noticed during the "crawl" test that the centre wheels on the tender are/were draging. Not turning freely as they shpuld do, I would think that this could be caused by the pick ups putting slightly too much force on the wheels,. Might require some adjustment, Even after running in the cetre wheels on the tender are still sticking . Although you did notice this, !

I'm in for some BR standards from them, a 9F with this level of quality would be a game changer. I'm in for a 4MT tender mogul in the 76000 series if they want to provide. There is also a slap in the face to give to another manufacturer if they do a 45xx at their present level of quality...

  • @europacifictradersltd3717

hi sam. this is a model that can win a persons heart...a wonderful looking model..the tender/ engine coupling is brilliant. a lesson accurascale need to take onboard. as they have quiet a few minor improvements to be addressed on there models. one is their coupling on their manor as the tender is fixed with the loco with very restriction removal.. which they say to separate them only when servicing or repair..

  • @paulsngaugechannel
    @paulsngaugechannel Před rokem +1

Hi Sam, thanks again for sharing your review with us. I think your review is quite accurate for your model. Lots of great features and the dcc chip access is the best and is the only manufacturers innovation in making it easy. At least it allows models to be chipped later after the extra details added and is protective so as the extras are not damaged. Personally I think the performance was a little sluggish, but on your layout it shows how much it is affected by not so perfect track. I like Dapol models, and although I model in N , I have had only a couple of Dapol locomotives ( sadly not at the moment) and never had any problems with them. I have a few Dapol wagons and the levels of detail and free running is far superior to GF and Peco , and often better value. Keep up the great reviews, hopefully Dapol will bring out a couple of Southern Locomotives soon. I think they would do other regions proud.

Sam, another spot on review. I have just received two of these from pre order over a year ago? DC Torquay Manor and DC Fringford Manor.
To compare. My buffers are both straight, both have no moulding marks on tender hand rails (I would not have spotted them as plastic. Fringfords middle tender wheel sticks, Torquay tender wheels do not stick. Both have noisy tender wheels.
Paint on chimney is poor (the prairie has a metal chimney? And the mogul is black paint)
All have really good green paint un.ike many Hornby models with insipid grey green plastic.
Noth have realistic speeds gearing seems about 10% faster than real life.
Interestingly, both run much better on my PWM dc controllers than my old H&M Duette.
Will have to do a second opinion video...

  • @ModelRailwaysUnlimited

Hi Sam, perfect review and I fully agree with your findings. I am delighted with mine, not sure if you saw any of my videos? One thing for you, the tender wheels have a bit too much pickup drag, this steals traction from the loco but its a super easy fix. Check my Facebook group or community tab for photos. Fixing the drag on the Manor class tender wheels. (1) Referring to the manual turn tender upside down and remove the four screws, one in each corner. (2) Remove the four further screws from the weight and speaker mount as shown, also assist the wire out through the hole. (3) You can now see the pickups, a great idea they rub on the tops of the flanges so should not get dirty, gently flex the pickups up and away from the flanges until they are just touching. Reassemble, make sure to lube the axles.

Just an add-on : I've run mine and, two points :
    1) yes, she is sluggish out of the box, but she improves on running
    2) she is a better runner at 80% throttle than at 50 %, and I thing this setting (I call it the aviation setting, planes flies at 80 % throttle in cruise) is the one intended. It is the one for continental models too (my famous 0-10-0 Brawa...)
    3) DCC is a good idea on her, or a nice pulsed current controller in DC, even if she is not bad with my little Gaugemaster Combi.

I see Dapol have put quite a bit of their R&D dollars (or, should I say, pounds?) into nice documentation; it looks really professional with color coding to pick out interesting bits that some modelers will be quite interested in. Good job, Dapol! 🎉 It even looks like they have an option for a sound-equipped DCC decoder AND speaker in the smoke box where it makes the most sense! This is definitely something the manufacturers of HO-scale steam locomotives here in the North American market need to pay attention to!

A fab review again Sam. Sadly, I missed this one since I’m working on an extensive review and research paper which needs to be peer-reviewed. My other half looked at it but doesn’t have a YT account. Anyway, she looks fantastic and profusely detailed for the amount, but the centre wheels of the tender aren’t turning cleanly, and the high concern about durability of that make of motor, or rather grave lack thereof is a straightforward no go. DCC on a USB stick and the connection of the two units are smart solutions that must be said, and she looks fantastic. Had the loco had a well reputable motor and the tender normal turning centre wheels, she whole would have been great value. Cherio and Ciao.

Sam, great review as usual, but please do take a look at the pressure that the pick ups are putting on the tender wheels. Others have mentioned this and it is very important. I mean how can you expect a loco to perform well if it is pulling a tender with the brakes on!

Lots to like , looks-wise it's excellent and has many nice features.
HOWEVER, Dapol motors do come across as a bit suspect judging from anecdotal evidence from a variety of people. It's something that seems to come up on a regular basis.
This is of course a vital part of the model and it seems a shame that Dapol haven't addressed this. It's an easy fix and surely wouldn't add much to the cost if they sourced some good quality motors. I really don't understand the thinking of cost cutting here when the rest of the model is excellent. It really puts me off buying their locos.
Sam, would it be possible for you to do an updated review on any models where you notice a drop off in performance after say 6-12 months? That would be really helpful.

Easily one of the most anticipated models of this year and all I can say is wow, it certainly lived to the expectations Dapol have with their last few models it nice to see an up to date, modern tooling of the Manor in OO and we won't have to make do the old Bachmann/ Mainline models. The one area where I wish Dapol would improve on though is their choice of motor(s), the past few Dapol releases based on your reviews have been really hit or miss in terms of performance and I really don't trust the motors that Dapol uses and thus their locomotive's ability to perform something which I trust Acurascale will at least improve upon if their Class 55 is anything to go by .

Bit of a curates egg for me this one. Parts are great, others aspects seem to hark back 20 odd years. Those heavy parting lines which make the boiler bands look misaligned are a huge shame. And like previous Dapol GWR locos I really can't get on board with that plated brass when offset by the frankly crap 'copper' paint. Based on previous models too I also mistrust the innards, I've had nothing but trouble with Dapol PCBs and motors to the point where I still refer to them as Crapol. After the Mogul I had to keep sending back, I remain to be sold on this one and to be honest I'll happily 'miss out'.

Nice loco and for those who think it a bit slow; just turn up the throttle. Good modelers don't want the scale 200mph runners. Would have liked to see it running on speed setting 75 with the coaches just to see how it handles your layout.
Thanks for the review Sam and looking forward to the Accurascale Manor.

Looks a great little model. One thing that I don't particularly like, which seems to be a feature of dapol's 0 gauge locos and the majority of 0 gauge wagons I've had out of the box, are the unpainted tyres of the wheels. I know some locos had polished tyres, but that was just an embellishment and is non-standard. Plus the majority of model steam locos from other manufacturers actually have painted tyres (diesels and rolling stock rarely do tbh, but it's not unheard of, such as the bachmann 47/57s).
I just hope they upscale it to 7mm, because a Manor is the largest steam loco I want in 0 gauge (aside from heavy freight).

Hi Sam. On the whole a rather nice model. I agree with your Quality rating. You didn't mention the moulding seam on the boiler that appears to have disappeared from many recent models. I thought you had missed the "sticking" wheels on the central axle of the tender; would some weight under the coal help - or would this interfere with the slightly diminished Power rating of the model?

This could simply be a case of history repeating itself. The GWR has always had a substantial and enthusiastic following, sadly, and at one time, in the Fifties and Sixties, most layouts seemed to be GWR branch lines, and a lot of models, both RTR and kits, reflected this. Personally, I'm a fan of the 'Withered Arm'.

Mine arrives tomorrow... Nothing to add, Dapol follows his policy of "let's make models that kicks *ss with a sledgehammer", and suceeds again. Mogul, then Prairie, and now the Manor. As we say in France, jamais deux sans trois ! For my own, the gearing is OK, I have a Brawa locomotive that runs at the same speed, if not even slower ! Only the torque issue might be annoying in exploitation, but the realistic gearing is a great plus. Sam, just a suggestion : why not a measurement of the speed of the models to see how far they drift (or not) from the prototype speed ? I can do some measurements by my own if you are interested.
For once, I'm happy to have not waited for your review before buying her. So, the gauntlet has to be picked by Accurascale now, we'll see what they will do with their manors...

Really good model and dapol have done themselves proud. That being said for me Accurascale do have a fair few areas to improve. The main thing is that there appears to be an ugly seam line above the handrail running the whole length. Can’t believe they put the moulding line there.
That being said this is definitely the model to go for if not much of a rivet counter and it’s packed with features and very few areas the factory could have done better. The overall look and cab are top notch.
I tend to do DCC sound and from what I have seen this is one of the areas Accurascale model comes to the fore based on what we’ve seen so far with its dual speaker setup. Not least because they are the same price at £260. Though Accurascale have a load of benefits of buying direct that mean it’s effectively cheaper.

Sam, You have to remember that the GW Manor’s were designed to replace the ageing fleet of Cambrian Railway locomotives operating out of Shrewsbury on the “Cambrian Coast Express”.
The Cambrian, like the Midland, had a small locomotive policy, preferring to double-head (again like the Midland) rather than use heavy large and expensive locomotives as per their green neighbour, the GWR.
A lot of the Cambrian system was rated at just 40mph due to the curvature gradients and poor ground conditions experienced in mid-Wales, with the rest rarely exceeding 60mph.
So to have a mixed-traffic 4-6-0 Manor Class that had a designed top speed of 75mph capable of travelling at 140mph in ‘00’ is totally unrealistic. DAPOL have geared their Manor appropriately 🚂🙂.
Just wonder if Accurascale, following on from DAPOL’s success with their Manor, will now abandon their Manor and reproduce a truly magnificent GW Grange, the very successful locomotives that the Manors were based on? Some say that the Grange’s were the best 4-6-0’s to ever come out of Swindon 🚂😃.

I don't think so: I wouldn't describe the Manor as 'common'. Indeed, it was a gap in the market for a long time - and it seems that Dapol and Accurascale both independently decided to try and fill it (Dapol announced first, but when Accurascale announced, their model was already at quite an advanced stage, and work on it had likely already started when Dapol made their announcements).
Personally, I have no problem with duplicate products - especially in cases like this, where neither of them was likely to be aware of the other's when they started work on it. The only time I *do* have a problem with it is when it's done in a predatory manner - when a company announces a model, and then another company (whose products may or may not come in red boxes and whose name may or may not begin with the letter 'H') rushes something similar to the shops at a lower price in order to undercut them. But even then, I guess it's just business, and if we don't like it then we don't have to buy those products!

I'd like them to do a Collett Goods 0-6-0 before they move past the GWR- I guess the old Replica Railways/Mainline model and its descendents are still the most common option there but by today's standards that one is very lacking. A Dapol version made to the same standard as this Manor Class model would be a most welcome edition to my fleet.
