What is your point? You give people who ride bikes (I am not gonna say cyclists because that is categorising) a bad name. Yeh, it's not the tour de france. Well what about care and safety of those you put in danger. Like a month before Christmas an idiot decides to ride the wrong way down cycle lane, don't know how fast he was going, but I was doing 20 to 25mph, head on collision, fractured hand and 3000POUNDS in lost Christmas wages and bonuses and damage to my bike. A few months later when I had healed a group of lads jumped out of their car straight into the bike lane leaving me nowhere to go hit wet drain flew through air smacked a kirb head first and split my helmet in two. How about rounding a hairpin incline with a Vauxhall tigra on my back wheels, I literally had to accelerate out from under him or he would have run over me, and he drove off. I caught him. He tried to deny it even happened, then gave in and offered to pay to fix it. Oh that's handy there's a bike shop right there Lewisham way. That be 500pounds for a new Mavic ksyrium back wheel, he ran off and if I chase him down when I catch I'm gonna beat on him, and I promised to leave the violence behind, so did the right thing and reported him to the police, and they did nothing.
I am an experienced rider of over 55years in the saddle including milk crates, scooters, scateboards, in line and quads skates, dirt bikes, sports bikes, Go-Karts, cars, vans, lorries and giant forklifts, yeh I'll ride anything that moves, so I have some idea of what I'm doing .

I looked and had space, however that car was speeding and caught way faster than it should have. Same point to you, that driver didn't make sure he had space to pass, he should have waited instead of leaning on the horn and running me out of the way.
I didn't cut him up, I was already moved out into the road after passing another cyclist, and stayed out to pass this one. Cutting up is where you pull out directly in front of another road user that's not what happened here.
The driver was bombing along at 40+ in a 30 zone, came across a cyclist already in the process of passing someone else and couldn't be bothered to wait.
The full incident is on my page, called argument with a car driver. He tells me that I shouldn't be going 30mph, it's a 30mph road so if I was, he shouldn't have been passing me in the first place.

I love the way you lycra guys (for the record; I ride a bike every day but as a mode of transport, not sport) cry when a car overtakes you 3 feet away and complain that he is ''shaving'' you but when you are filtering - even in single lane each direction traffic - you ride on the white line in the middle of the road - sometimes over the line going into oncoming traffic - less than a foot away from the cars on your left. How does that work? You have clearly never ridden in the Netherlands, nor could you, as bikes and mopeds pass literally within centimeters of each other and no problem, as they are capable and not wobbling lol.

    • @ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007
      @ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007  Před 4 lety

I also ride as a mode of transport, I only cycle to work and back. This is my commute.
You won't hear me complaining about cars being close, as long as they don't blast past an inch away at high speed. In central London it's impossible for cars to be 1m+ away. I have no problem with that as long as they are careful.
In the point you are making, cyclists are far more vulnerable than car drivers. For less confident cyclists it can be scary to have a car come up behind you (that you can't see) and pass very close, especially at speed. You need a bit of wobble room on a cycle, especially if you are new to it or less confident. However if it's a situation you're in control with, as in you see a gap ahead and are comfortable being that close then that's your choice. That's the difference, cyclists may choose to be close to car, but don't like it when it's not their choice.
If it's a dotted white line, and there's space then it's perfectly fine to use a bit of the oncoming lane to pass. Same way cars do when overtaking a bus at a bus stop etc.
The Netherlands and London are very different. Different infrastructure, different road culture and attitude. Different cities require different riding styles and the style for one wouldn't work in the other.

at 2:35 did you do a shoulder check to check for overtaking traffic before overtaking the other cyclist? Also, if its a 30mph road with dashed lines and its empty and you're cycling at 25mph then another vehicle can overtake you to go up to the speed limit. you tried to overtake a cyclist whilst a car was also trying to overtake you.

At 1:27 the people should have held back as they could clearly see that a cyclist was coming. The Highway Code states that, before crossing you must let oncoming traffic pass and wait for a safe gap.
Regardless, I did hold back and wait for them, I didn't go through until they had passed.
2:05 the motorbike did nothing wrong, just demonstrates how the speed differential in such a situation could catch you out.
It would have been better if the motorbike had slotted into a gap in the cycle lane whilst he was still at speed, in advance of the turn.
2:35 I always shoulder check, at the point I started that maneuver it was all clear. That car however was speeding came charging up and couldn't wait. I refer you to your first point, why couldn't he have held back, he could clearly see I was passing someone, I wasn't going slowly and it took only a few seconds. Had he not been speeding he'd never have been held up at all.
Why do you feel that having to hold back and wait only applies to cyclists, and not to pedestrians or motorists?

2:35 If you're going at about 25mph the car can go up to 30mph in that zone but the driver did seem unnecessarily agressive. He could have held back then overtook.
I don't feel that holding back only applies to cyclists. I ride a motorcycle every day from one end of London to the other and I have to hold back countless times for cyclists, cars, buses and delivery drivers on L plates who want to try and ride their mopeds at 100mph. Everyone should hold back a bit really. I can't speak for everyone but my only issue is that some people (not everyone) don't respect that some bus lanes are shared with motorcyclists and they should try and leave a bit of room instead of cycling 4 or 5 abreast.

@@A_S_100 Good morning. That section in code relates to when you're turning into a side road, if a pedestrian has started to cross them you must wait before turning in. At 1:27 I'm not turning in. However I obviously still waited for them, that clip just shows how pedestrians look for cars but are often not aware of cycles.
I fully agree with about cyclists not being 4-5 abreast. I always tuck in to the left unless I'm overtaking so that faster traffic can pass. I also get frustrated when I catch a few cycles who are alongside each other having a chat and get held up behind, London rush hour it's not the place for that.
Keep safe on your bike mate.

1:02 You can see the van is in your lane and moving to the left, so, WHY THE HELL did you ride up the inside of him???? You should have held back until he saw his mistake and moved back out of the lane! You put yourself in a STUPID DANGEROUS position to childishly make a point. Sorry, but that says more about your dangerous aggressive riding policy than their bad driving lane awareness!

I slowed and held position at the rear of the van and hit my horn to make him aware he was in the cycle lane.
You can see from the body language of the van that the driver is now aware, and starts moving right. At that point I pass.
Very simple, you’re making a mountain out of a molehill. If the van had continued to move left I would have backed out. I can stop faster than he can.

@@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007 The video clearly shows you had your front wheel betwen the van and pavement, it's there as clear as day! If you think that is 'holding position', then you need training. Holding position is being a car length BEHIND the van and in a position where the van driver can clearly see you in his mirror and in a position where you will be safe if the van continues to move left. If you rode a motorcycle and did the legal training neccesary to ride one, you would understand what you ate doing wrong. The fact you defend your incorrect actions like you do speaks volumes. I didn’t just fly up the inside of that van, I slowed when I got to it, used the horn to make the driver aware of my presence, and proceeded once I felt safe to do so.
Vehicles cannot move directly sideways, I was safe at the rear as, if the van continued to drift over the gap would narrow and I could easily back out of it.
Try cycling in Central London and you’ll see that’s common. Many times you’ll look at a gap, and if you’re confident the driver is aware you’ll proceed, if not you’ll back out.

Cars are not allowed into these cycle lanes unless unavoidable, as per the Highway Code. That’s why these clips are in my video. Sowing how many drivers ignore cycle lanes. If drivers followed the rules it wouldn’t be an issue would it.
Secondly any driver moving into a different lane has to indicate plus check it’s clear first. Poor driving.
