      Honestly a lot of the iffy moments in these videos could be avoided if Ryan went slower and drove more defensively.
      Of course, as long as he obeys the law he can cycle however fast he wants, not criticizing him. It's himself he's putting at risk, and if speed is worth the higher stress for him that's his decision. However I think these videos aren't necessarily representative of the risks for the average cyclist.

    • @ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007

      @@AsplundhFamily They were all avoided because I’m following the rules and paying attention to where I an going.
      There would be nothing to avoid if the other road users in my video also followed the rules and looked where they were going. Focus attention on them rather than victim-shaming a cyclist with a heavy steel bike with one gear going on average 12-14mph.
      Would you tell a harassed woman she’d have less iffy moments with men if she covered up and was more defensive, or would you focus on teaching men that harassing women is wrong?

    • @AsplundhFamily
      @AsplundhFamily Před 2 lety

      @@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007 Hey, sorry if it came off as me blaming you. That wasn't my intention. I'm just saying, your risks could be mitigated if you took certain precautions.
      To take your example, I would definitely advise my friends who are women (or lean femme in their gender presentation) to exercise caution when walking alone at night. Would it be their fault if they got assaulted for walking alone at night? Of course not. Is it right and just for the world to be like this? Fuck no, and I hate it.
      But just like with disgusting perverts, dangerous drivers are currently a part of our reality, and I think keeping this in mind would make you safer. I don't think it helps anyone to equate that with victim-blaming.
      At the social/policy level, we need to focus on reducing car speeds and distracted driving, but on my commute the only thing I can do as an individual to help assure my safety is cycling more cautiously. As I said you're free to cycle as you wish within the law, I just wanted to let the other commenter know that a lot of your clips could be avoided with a different cycling style. If the only way to ride was how you do it, I think a lot of people (like the commenter I replied to) would be turned off to the idea of cycling.

    All you have to do is slow down, and anticipate these incidents.
    I've been cycling in London for 40 years, and I've never come across the sort of issues that you're coming across, because I slow down, accept that other road users are going to do silly things, and prepare to give way if necessary, even if I'm the one who has priority.

    Inclined to give pededstrians a pass in most of these cases since we're the ones making the situation (a little bit) dangerous by bringing a bike into the equation. Happy New Year my friend, hope you’re keeping well.
      I think the new rules are pretty good, especially towards motorists to stop them cutting across cyclists, and accepting that cyclists sometimes need to hold the centre of the road.
      My fear is that the attitude that pedestrians can walk out whenever they like is strengthened by how these rules have been covered by the media. That’s not actually the case, the significance change is:
      “when people are crossing or waiting to cross at a junction, other traffic should give way”
      Key that it’s at a junction, so pedestrians still should just walk out anywhere. That said during rush hour in central London there are junctions where there is a constant stream of pedestrians waiting to cross, so should the traffic grind to a halt?
      Rules still say that pedestrians should not cross when the lights show a red figure, and still say that pedestrians should stop, look, if traffic is coming let it pass, wait for a safe gap to cross, cross the road quickly and not diagonally etc. Hopefully people continue to use common sense when crossing. 🤞🏻
