      I would definitely say distorting it with a bit of a 670 fairchild compression before the distortion

I've got my writing partner's piano arrangement with some synth, harp, etc. on the same track, which I arranged around (GarageBand) I have a vocal solo track & about 10 children's vocal tracks, along with about 10 orchestra instruments, strings, etc. My first time arranging all of this and want the largeness of the bridge where the orchestra comes in but want to keep my piano track to not be covered, but not overloading on the gain...I EQ'd each instrument last night and really brought out the bass/bigger sound...now I want to make the piano arrangement is prominent. 🙄 Newbie***

    Excellent workshop. I would love to see a similar one on how to eq/compress guitars when you’re trying to get an Americana or alt country sort of mix. (Ryan Adams, Son Volt, Jason Isbell etc). These artists are fairly guitar forward, but not super distorted or heavy and I struggle with making them sound full, while not veering into heavy rock land.

    I put mid frequency instruments to a bus and side chain the vocal to the Focusrite Reveal plugin which is a frequency dependent Ducker and you control ducking with percent. Works like a hot damn. I like using sateration on almost all mid range instruments I want to stick out. I've got too many saturators now it's hard to choose. Whoops!

    I really appreciate these series of videos you've been making. Piano is my main instrument, having played for over 30 yrs now and yet I find it the trickiest to mix. I think that's because it's both melodic, percussive and also fills the entire frequency spectrum. Controlling all those spikes and resonances is always a challenge. Would be interested to know if you typically use additional processing on Pianos, such as compression or saturation? Or whether you tend to keep it natural. Thanks again!

    • @SaraCarterSimplyMixing
      @SaraCarterSimplyMixing  Před 10 měsíci +2

      After EQ I tend to use gentle compression using an optical compressor, usually an LA2A plugin, then go from there. Distortion does a good job of helping the ear latch on to it, so I use that in busier mixes or when trying to mix it with guitars and synths.

  • @YourFavouriteColor

    great video! Question:
    You touch briefly on the 3-5k range being where the vocals are. Because of this, I'm always timid about boosting other instruments in this range, because I'm afraid of masking with the presence range of the vocal. Any advice for reconciling this?
    My current go-to method is dynamic eq. If a guitar/piano/synth has any kind of presence boosting in 3-5k, I put in a gentle dynamic eq cut in that range to trigger when the vocal comes in. Any other tips or principles to address this? Many thanks!

    • @guglielmonigro
      @guglielmonigro Před 10 měsíci +1

      What I do, is sidechain with vcls so that when I need it, the piano leave space to my vcls, and when vcls are not there, the piano has its presence.

    • @YourFavouriteColor
      @YourFavouriteColor Před 10 měsíci +2

      @@guglielmonigro that's what I mean. I use a sidechain into a dynamic eq

    • @SaraCarterSimplyMixing
      @SaraCarterSimplyMixing  Před 10 měsíci +2

      The side chaining method is a good one, another is to boost only the sides using mid-side EQ on a stereo piano, dip the mid a dB or two to make room for the vocal. If it's mono, I tend to pan away from centre and that seems to work for me.

    • @YourFavouriteColor
      @YourFavouriteColor Před 10 měsíci +2

      @@SaraCarterSimplyMixing thank you kindly for the reply! Lately I've been doing mono checks as I mix, so that I know the mix is under control in mono, but the dynamic eq method seems to hold up better in mono because, honestly, all the advanced techniques with comb filtering and delay to work the sides in stereo to keep them happy in mono...a little above my pay grade lol.
      Perhaps in a future video you can talk about more advanced techniques in stereo-mono compatibility? I've always wanted to wrap my head around that.

That’s why her subscribers after 4 years are stagnated in the 20k range. Someone with this consistency this long should at least be 100k by now. You don’t have to agree but the numbers don’t lie. A video title “how to” should be focused on concise practical steps. I guarantee video analytics will show less than 50% engagement after 10 minutes.
