Darin Morgan addresses Scully’s immortality on Kumail Nanjiani’s X-Files podcast. Clyde’s response was meant to be interpreted as him just trying to be nice and saving Scully from obsessing over her death. The misinterpretation of the line forced the staff to try to address it in some kind of ambiguous way when it was meant to mean nothing more than a kind gesture.

    • @katebattista7400

I remember that interview....I think he mentioned that part of the problem was that a lot of the writers on this episode weren't around for the immortal photographer episode so they didn't catch the connection that was made.

  • @yelyzavetakrokhina8215
    @yelyzavetakrokhina8215 Před 5 lety +52

But they kinda adress Scully's immortality in "Tithonus", when immortal photographer dies instead of Scully. So logically she then becomes immortal, but it's sad for me to think that way because if Mulder dies and she doesn't at all, it will be hurtfull.

I think the way Bruckman addressed Scully's death isn't meant to mean she is immortal but rather to put her at ease knowing she doesn't die anytime soon. He did her a favor by not allowing her to dwell on it. Great episode. The fantastic Peter Boyle once again rocks it.

Clyde Bruckman was a great episode because Darin focused less on humor or absurdism and more on the human condition, on pathos, and the fragile nature of life itself.

I think he killed himself because he couldn't take his "gift" anymore. IIRC, he seems pretty uncomfortable with meeting people and then knowing how and when they'll die. I'm sure it gets depressing after awhile.

Scully's immorality is expressly examined in Tithonus. It may be easy to miss, but she is certainly immortal, whether it be on the small screen or with regard to continuity. Even the secondary series confirms this. Immortality is relative. Scully's legacy will live on for hundreds if not thousands of years.

The best scene in "Clyde Bruckman's Final Response" is when Scully throws the phone at Yappi's commercial ad at the end. Never gets old. This episode along with a few others such as Jose Chung's 'From Outer Space', War of the Coprophages, and D.P.O. are the reasons why Season 3 of the X-Files got me hooked on this series back in the mid-90's which was the absolute peak of the show. Season 3 also had a perfect balance of Comedy and serious episodes, and was one of the last seasons to do it before they started going mostly campy towards the late 90's.

What Clyde said to Scully about how she'll die means a lot to me. Mostly because of one of my FAVOURITE episodes in the entire show. Season 6, episode 10 "Tithonus". In that episode, Scully learns about how a photographer becomes immortal, and during the case, Scully goes through the exact same process that made HIM immortal. I knew when I watched season 3 episode 4 initially that Clyde was just being nice and that he didn't want to tell Scully the truth because he really liked her, which I thought was such a sweet thing for him to do. But now looking back on it with the eyes of someone who has seen most of the show, I know he could have meant it literally because of Tithonus. Look, I highly doubt Scully is immortal since we've seen her age past the age she became an immortal, but I think it's cool how it all comes full circle a bit.

Peter Boyle was so good in this episode, that he won the Emmy that year for best guest actor in a drama series.
It's hard to reconcile this performance with his line from 'Everybody Loves Raymond' when his wife says that she's not just some trophy wife and his response was "What contest in Hell did I win!" Great actor, period.
BTW, I just discovered your review vids, you're really good, fun, entertaining and pretty damn cute. Looking through your play list of XF reviews, I see that you have yet to cover 'Tithonus'. It's a Scully centric episode and it does deal with the whole Scully's immortal mythos that really wasn't dealt with after Clyde's vision. Check it out.

I am a late comer to this GREAT show and of course so are my comments. I love this episode so many reasons. The first thing I want to do is ask a question: Am I the only one who picked up on the scene of Mulder holding the doll who looks like a small child and then stands next to Scully? For a brief instant it resembles a family portrait.
I loved the way Mulder the believer doesn't want to know how he dies but, Scully the skeptic does. It's Mulder who believes Clyde has a gift and he doesn't want to know whereas Scully the skeptic is kind of like yea sure tell me so I can decide if you are full of ****. @samthelion3925 Před 3 lety +2

Yeah but what's also weird is that he says he sees Mulder dying by autoerotic asphyxia. And as we all know, no one can have two deaths. Also also, Clydes vision of Mulder getting his throat sliced open wasn't his vision. It was the killers. He just saw it through his own eyes. From what we've seen, Clyde gets everyone's death right, but the killer doesn't see everyone's death like Clyde does, so there's no guarantee that anything he "see's" is actually gonna happen.

I thought it was clever the way this episode addressed the determinism vs indeterminism debate, and how the concept of determinism differs from ‘fate’, yet is often confused with it. Scully getting in the wrong elevator was the element of indeterminism in an otherwise pre determined set of events. Karl Popper wrote an interesting essay on how elements of indeterminism within the determinist structure might exist.

There's no given reason why he should kill himself.
    He makes reference to AEA.
There is a sexual subtext when he talks about this with Scully.

It's not easy to understand why Clyde is desperate and kills himself. You'll get closer comprehending that if you remember the opening scene, where he buys the lottery ticket. "why i do that to myself" he says later, right before the discovery of the dead body.
As about the prediction on Scully's death. I never thought it is because she is immortal. The look on Clyde's eyes says it all, as he is looking at a very special person who can be both intuitive and grounded. Someone who not only sees things but also acts with good will, unlike his pessimist view. "You don't die" means there is something transcendental about you that is to precious to kill.
