That was my favorite scene, when Mulder recited his favorite line from Moby Dick. Scully seems impressed by this and they share real intellectual connection in the scene.

I find it really really interesting how Scully compares Ahab to Mulder and how she called her own father Ahab. It reminds me of season 4, episode 13 called "Never again" where Scully says that other "fathers" came into her life, referring to Mulder. The comparison they seem to be subtly making between Scullys dad and Mulder seems very significant in a way I can't quite comprehend. But the fact that she obviously loved her father very much and then sort of translates a form of that attachment onto Mulder must mean something significant for their relationship.
I think Scully relates to Mulder regarding her father because they are (were) both so dedicated to their work. She loves that about both of them but of course her love for Mulder goes beyond "father" love. She loved qualities about her father and sees many of the same in Mulder. The fact they could have walked off that rock but didn't look beyond it to see the shore makes their talk that much better. If they would have seen the shore the conversation would have never taken place.
Love this ep! But You skipped my favorite part! When Mulder asks Scully if she's lost weight right after he talks about cannibalism, the look she shoots him when she figures it out is classic.
So funny! It’s also probably when Gillian had lost all her baby weight. By Season 4 she is so thin which plays well into the cancer arch.

Of course DKS can drive a boat, her father was a career Navy man. I love how she explains to Mulder he is Ahab with the look of "Geez-us-Christ I'm in love with Ahab and he wants a peg leg."
Oh, Queequeg.......being a dog lover, this was gut wrenching and then we get the Talk On the Rock.....classic S&M.

Sorry...computer trouble. Season 4 is complex. E2 Home addresses Scully’s earliest desire to have a child (with Mulder). Throughout the S there is turmoil over what their relationship is, the whole cancer thing, government conspiracy and yeah a pissed off brother. But it is my favorite season.

Damn, you are right about them being at their height of attractiveness in S4. They're slowly getting there and it's their most iconic looks that we all know.
I think Scully looks her best in FTF ( which was filmed right after season 4 ) and the beginning of season 5. The scene in FTF where she is in her bed wide awake and then answers the door for a slightly inebriated Mulder. She is absolutely gorgeous.

Great video as usual. Two things 1) I didn’t like that dog so I didn’t care that it died (I did feel sad for Scully though) and 2) I think I might be one of the few who hates the Conversation on the Rock. Yeah it’s nice they’re talking so candidly but It’s all a bit mean. Scully’s assumptions about Mulder are awful. Also Mulder might be Ahab but Scully is Ishmael. The man who follows someone into madness is worse than the man suffering that madness. Who is more foolish, the fool or the fool who follows? Hmm Scully hmmm.
I don't think she meant it in a mean spirited way. She made an observation about him, which he didn't actually dispute. Scully herself has admitted she continues to chase the truth with him because without it, she doesn't really have anything.
@@Mia_M Well her loyalty to Mulder (and her suffering caused by that loyalty) keeps the fight alive in her. I don't think it's fair to say she has NOTHING. I think Scully wants to keep a check on their fight - to make sure that they're fighting for the right reasons.
I think IWTB + The Revival (regardless of its faults) shows that Scully does not follow Mulder into madness. She supports him to the best of her ability. She fights the good fight until it is no longer her's.
I do agree that I don't love COTR the way most people do though.
I really love what you’ve written here Candice. I always felt that Mulder pulled away from Scully through the series to ‘save’ her from the demons he could not control. I think Scully was quite aware of this darkness which is why she never pushed the relationship herself. “Oh brother” is much easier to accept than the truth and the consequences that come with it.

Yea, where was she while he was fighting his fear of fire? She probably didn't know that but ,Scully did. She wax right there for him as usual. Phoebe helped herself to Mulder thinking gsje meant so much to him. Biiiiatch. He just needs Scully and he k ows it.....damn professional relationships get in the way of life. Thankful they worked it out even if it took years.

I've just found your channel and have been binging your X-files episode reviews. I love the show and have always enjoyed hearing how other people have experienced it for themselves. I've only ever watched X-files reviews from a guy who calls himself SFDebris, and your take on how you review and appreciate the show is completely different than his. That said, I was never into the shipping aspect of the various characters, especially Mulder and Scully. Their dynamic was made all the more intriguing and meaningful to me for the fact that there was so much sexual tension which was rarely resolved. Obsessing over the will they/won't they aspect of it was never part of my interest in the show.
However, now that I have seen your take on the show and its characters, and I have seen a few more interviews (both recent and from the 90s) with David and Gillian, I'm re-watching the entire series with a closer eye on how their interpersonal dynamic is reflected in both their character development as well as their relationship as actors. I have heard they initially didn't get along very well for one reason or another, so the fact that they (David and GIllian) seem to be really great friends now is neat... and being able to sort of watch that friendship happen over time through their characters is pretty cool. Thanks for the videos and your perspective on the show. I look forward to many more
Hi. I’ve watched the X Files from the beginning but drifted away when it formally ended in 2002. Season 11 really helped me get through a rough patch in my life. I identified a lot with the episode Plus One from Scully’s perspective. I started rewatching the show and then found Candice’s channel. It’s been so much fun to share the experience of the show with old and new fans alike. Thank you all.
