HP Lovecraft always had space in mind when he was writing his horror tales, at least the ones that would fall under the category of "cosmic" horror. The horror of it all, in his fiction and philosophy, is the indifferent and impersonal materialism of the universe, and the danger that means for subjects living in that universe (like us), as this implies that we are objectively insignificant and there is no "plan" in regards to anything, so "all bets are off". It is a fully non-anthropocentric way of looking at things, and Lovecraft's cosmic monsters and creatures are metaphorical of said materialistic, indifferent and impersonal universe, and maybe even in some instances posited as being scientifically plausible (bear in mind here though that he was also writing in the early 20th century). Lovecraft had a long time interest in astronomy, so it most likely would have been intensely interesting to him to have been able to witness such technological and scientific achievements such as human beings leaving the earth in rocket ships and landing on the moon, creating and populating a space station, sending probes to Mars and collecting data, seriously considering colonizing Mars, etc., but he died too early last century for to be able to experience any of this. It would also be interesting to see his take on his fiction exerting influence over video games like Moons of Madness, with their immersive and simulation-esque qualities.

This myth has several parallels in other cultures including Greek, Buhddist, Chinese, Norse, Indian, Zoroarstrian, and Egyptian mythologies which suggests that it has Proto-Indo-European religious roots in Northern Syrian tribes and spread through the middle east to Asia. just gonna be a nerd for a minute here: about an hour and 15 min in gab mentions that 70 is a low heartrate for someone who just saw a monster and my immediate thought was that in lower gravity (like mars) your heart rate would slow down (less force needed to get your blood back up your body) and when I looked it up apparently that IS the trend they see in astronauts!
now, did the game designers have that in mind? no idea. still, the more you know 🌠

the same thing happened with the Park and Hide and Shriek. the only one I saw who commented on the connection was Minx and a lot of them didn't seem to know the lore so I'm not sure how many play TSW (or SWL now)

I’m seeing everyone comment about Orochi, but another cool little allusion in the very beginning and throughout the story - the two circles that look like a venn diagram? Mars’ two moons are Phobos and Deimos, which were the (Roman, I think) deities of Fear and Panic. Also Cyrano? As in Cyrano de Bergerac? I’m not sure what it means in context but I love the attention to details!

ALERT SPOILERS FOR BACKGROUND LORE: For all people who doesn’t knows context of the game background, the game it’s a spin off based in The Secret World/Secret World Legends MMORPG decolores by Funcom, where you play as an astronaut for the Orochi (one of the lore enemy factions opposed to monster hunter factions Templar/Illuminati/Dragon), but due to their science limitations to uncover the mysteries of Agartha as opposed to the other main factions mentioned who are inherently bees (protectors or chosen one of the old gods of light and darkness) from the Hollow Earth, they always mess up and lose bases and resources against the filth, the darkness incarnated aka Lovecraft tentacle black goo monsters. Then Templars/Ilu/Dragon have to clean their mess. They are a greedy corporation who somehow wants to develop human race and theatrics or being their heroes, but wanting power of the old beings without being chosen due to their lack of intuition and faith, basically incompetents trying to imitate real monster hunters.

Yep, I'd say that this company is indeed, shady.
