  • 🧑‍⚕️𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱? Well.....
They were right in a few ways.
All pain is in your brain, created in the insular cortex 🧠 which is a smart a**e response I know. However, when we are very aware, focused and even cautious about something, we significantly increase the level of pain/symptoms that we experience.
My back pain was bad enough for 2 years, but when I finally got a scan confirming an issue, I spiralled - it got worse, fast. I eventually learned how to undo this effect, but it took time!
Another example where I have experienced this effect, was where last year I believed I had a brain tumour (long story). Anyway symptoms were getting significantly worse, fast too. Started as twingy head pains, developed to include headaches. Started waking with headaches in the mornings.
Then the dizzy spells started 😵‍💫 at this stage I was stressed, anxious, a bit depressed and pretty concerned. I had been making a diary of the headaches/pains on Drs orders, but this really focused my attention to it, always waiting for the next symptom.
After around 8 weeks of this I had an MRI, showed no tumour (just a minor issue ((massive brain 🤣)) slept on it that night, 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝘀𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗯𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝟱𝟶%, 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝟳𝟱% 𝗻𝗼𝘄. Occasional minor symptoms only, almost no dizziness.
When you focus on something, especially chronic pain, your brain creates these symptoms which you ACTUALLY experience physically.
To improve your back pain, it is important to try and relax, move, look after yourself in terms of nutrition, exercise, sleep, hydration and stress management, as well as a few other lifestyle factors.
