You missed a couple things: 1) Chinese women have become more selective and less interested in marriage. 2) Chinese women also hold most of the debt in their country. 3) Chinese parents mostly depend on their children as their retirement plan and a good marriage ensures a good retirement.

I've read that Japan has a lot of older single women also. The reason is that Japanese culture wants women to quit their jobs after getting married and take care of the husbands parents.

Not many men want to take on the task of financially supporting a woman and children. So again. No it's not the women empowerment, they have poor options because men there are not able to start a family. Any guy can go to Japan and find a woman, romance her if he treats her nice she will agree to be his girlfriend then offer a ring and support and she will jump on the opportunity.
I am a widow who is choosing to remain single. No other man would measure up to my late husband in my eyes and I simply don’t want anybody else. I also don’t want in laws. That was the only complaint I had about being married. A year ago, I “married” 2 basset hound puppies and will leave it at that. I will be reunited with my husband after I die.

I am a Chinese, male, 28, at my age, my parents will continuously urge me to find a girlfriend and get married. Although I actually wanted to find a decent girl but my pocket doesn't allow me to do so. Dating, eating out, buying gifts, travelling and all kinds of expenses will drive me crazy. Due to the current troubling economics in China, my business in Shanghai can barely support 2 person's life. True, the birth rate is decreasing in an alarming ratio. The primary factor I believe is the cost of living, as I mentioned earlier, marriage, and raising a child will drain parents' savings quickly. Even in the 1st tier cities, the real average wage is still quite low compared with the mortgage price.
Giving SH as an example, normally I earn 12k a month, housing cost me 3,5K, the loan of my car is about 3.7K, fuel 1.2K, food 2K etc, so at the end of the month, I don't have any savings left. If I have a girlfriend, my cost can only increase dramatically, not to mention to have a baby. About the mortgage price, a 100 square meter apartment in the place where I am living is about 7-10 million RMB, simply unreachable for me. Many young generations are facing the same challenge as mine.

Male foreign teachers had a great deal of interest. Female foreign teachers got no interest and dated other foreign teachers.
There was A LOT of pressure to get married before 25.
Chinese are well aware of human biology the reason for marriage before 25 is to put babies in the bakery when the oven is still actually working. Unlike the mentally handicapped gymnastic westerners that think they can defy their own body's nature. Above 35 geriatric babies become really an issue.
Maybe Chinese men show "no interest" in foreign women because they know already the feeling is mutual. I live in Bermuda and have lived in the past in Canada and both white and black women say Indian, Chinese and Southeast Asia men have no sex appeal. Overall, this is a developed world problem. Marriage has lost its worth to individual men and women in developed countries, and individuals benefit quite a bit by staying single. The wife is somewhat of a servant to the husband and his parents in a way. So regarding protection for women against this kind of culture, there’s none.

I just lived in China for 3 years due to my husband's job. They had just criminalized domestic violence over there. Husbands beat the shit out of their wives and I knew many women who didn't want to get married at all. DV has only been criminalized for a few years now. Long story short, I fell in love with a Chinese girl I met online about 14 years ago. She was beautiful, charming, intelligent, charismatic. The perfect girl. We got engaged. However, it did not end well. She was very insistent that I get a normal job (I was a professional poker player) and when I said no, I did not realize that would be the end. After that I became so disgruntled with dating that I just gave up. It became too much work, too expensive, and I lost a lot of trust. I have been happily single for 14 years and at this point I pretty much avoid girls so I can prevent myself from dating or getting into a relationship. I have found solitude and happiness alone and my finances are much better.

First, I am an American, I live in Thailand and my wife is Thai Chinese. What I learned was the Thai Chinese women when married then belongs to her new husbands family kind of like a new daughter to the family since her husband is responsible to his parents and he will also will inherit all of his parents wealth once they die. Second, in Thailand and I am assuming also in China that a Chinese woman that has a college education will not marry a many below her since he will not be able to make the money she does and also the man will still be responsible for his family and if they are poor farmers she will have to support his family also and that may be why there are not many educated Chinese women in the countryside. I noticed here in Thailand that there are many college educated Thai women that are single since they cannot find a college educated Thai man to marry since the man is much like any man, he is more interested in the physical attraction than the educational attraction of a Thai woman.
Having many years in Asia and working for large companies, college educated and single many of the college educated women that worked for these companies were always happy to see me. I never had any problem dating them, just asked them out with a couple of the women's friends the first couple of time and then the girl showed up alone after that. However, I was not interested in marriage and never went past the dinner date since Thailand was full of working girls that could be a lot of fun with no strings attached. I finally married at 51 to a Thai Chinese women with a college degree in Pharmacy. She was very well paid and she basically dedicated her life to me and our son. Aside from her parents calling and asking for advice on health problems the only money my wife gives her parents is a once a year Chinese New Year present of cash that is about one weeks pay. We see her parents 2 to 3 times a year although we live 1 1/2 hour drive from their home, usually to have dinner with them or on our anniversary (now 25 years). My wife has 2 other daughters that did not get married and they support the parents since they are both also have university degrees.
Men outnumber women, rural men cannot find enough women to marry... yet the unmarried women are referred to as "left over". That really says a lot about the Chinese view of a woman's worth.

Well, in the US the downfall began with the feminist movement, at the lowest point they go rid of the original feminists that came up with the whole thing because they didn't wanted to engage in more radical and borderline misandristic tendencies.....nowadays men resent women because of the hateful points of view modern feminism implanted into the minds of "modern women"....now it's making its way to even the most conservative societies or cultures out there.
I only date genuine human souls. There were many non-human souls incarnated into the Earth during the 20th century, which is the cause of all this bizaare behavior.
The only solution I see now is technology. Either give everyone an AI/robot partner and let humans just be friends and share sperm/eggs when they want kids. OR give people the ability to easily switch their appearance so they can always be their partner’s ideal and then date based on remaining criteria like personality, interests, values.
Right now we are all still biologically programmed to find certain traits a turn on/turn off. No one has the answer to change this, despite everyone complaining about it (I'd love the ability to choose who I found attractive). But very few people have the traits that people are attracted to. So dating is failing.

My options were an alcoholic, a guy who wanted me to be his mummy and treat him like a 1 year old, a guy who enjoyed hitting/throwing things at me, a man who turned out to be gay, lots of ‘I’ll date you but never marry you’ types, and men who were unattractive to the point where sex was physically painful. Staying single was my best option. I focused on my career and being my own husband instead. I’m not ugly, just not pretty enough for men to commit to when there is free porn, IG gold-diggers and Only Fan girls on demand. I do understand. If I had the option of an AI/robot husband then I doubt I would have bothered trying to find someone. You choose the best option available to you.

This seems strange since during the one child policy we were told that Chinese families so favored boys that those that could afford it aborted any girls until they got a boy. That led to a huge surplus of boys and a shortage of girls for brides.

Here what I think is happening:
Chinese women in their 20s in the beginning gets a lot of attention from guys. She gets very picky and starts to have unrealistic requirements. "The guy needs to be tall, handsome, rich, drive a Lamborghini, wear expensive name brand clothing, owns a nice house, able to be very romantic, will have our first date at a Michelin star restaurant, will buy me a LV handbag ...." 90% of guys around her are invisible to her. Since she can't find her guy, she focuses on her career and works 996. She barely has time to time about anything besides work. She keeps putting off actively finding a guy. She keeps thinking that once she's successful, she will be entitled to those rich and handsome guys.
She finally celebrates her 30th birthday and starts to realize that her ability to attract guys attention is diminishing. That rich and handsome guy isn't knocking on her door. She is also facing pressure from her parents to start a family. Her parents start to ask around their own network for guys. However, the parents see that their daughter is so accomplished in her career and education so they won't settle for some average dude. So now, they post ads around parks and start to interview prospective guys. Years go by and no guy suitable for her can be found. Each year that goes by, the parents put more pressure on the daughter and ask her to lower her requirements. She finally goes out to ask guys to go on dates. However, the guys are not interested in her. They are all chasing after the girls in their 20s and don't want a leftover "woman" since it will bring shame to him and his family.
There are more men than women but the basic requirement for a man is owning a house and car.
More men overall but not in their age range who are straight, working, and not married. I wasn't even bringing it down by type of industry, height weight and pure/mixed.

That's just the thing - there's a difference in geographical location. The single male crisis is in rural villages, while single women are more often found in cities. Connecting the two is not so easy as there is often a huge geographical distance, cultural norms that restrict them, and regulations that make it tougher to move in China.

Virtually ALL of the kids who are considered "good catches" for marriage - healthy, beautiful, athletic, from good families, etc., move away from small towns and rural areas IMMEDIATELY upon graduation. They go to the big colleges and get degrees. They then usually stay near the colleges in the big college towns and tech centers. Those left behind in the small towns without college degrees are often single and have very limited economic prospects. There is a serious dearth of attractive singles over age 18 in small towns and in rural America. So, those who do not go to college and find a spouse, and stay in a small town, usually end up poor and single for most, if not the rest, of their lives. It's sad but that's just the way it is.

The rural problem is also real in Brazil, many single women are moving to the large urban cities ( a female country music genre begin 'cause that by the way, and most of the songs are about be single and drink a lot ), in contrast to the families of 2, or 3 generations from rural migrants families ( Brazil had a rural exodus in 60s and 70s ) thatare now moving to the country side again because of living cost and strong gentrification. Probably a classic liberal will think gentrification is good, because improves the neighborhood. Well its correct, but the other part is that this is pushing people to the most far away suburbs( poor areas ). São Paulo have neighborhood on the border with +300k habitants.

If this is what’s happening, China’s demographic problem is going to be much, much worse than predictions suggest. Given there are more men than women, you would think the men would adjust their expectations, but they aren’t, which means that there are a lot of single men and a whole lot more single women - and that means a lot of childless people. Plus, owning a home is almost a prerequisite for a man to marry, and that is much more difficult that it was a decade ago, given they’re so incredibly expensive in China (due to its property bubble, which the dating situation partly contributed to).
This will mean a crash in young people, which means a dearth of people to staff the military, which Xi needs to fund his aggressive ambitions. Transactional marriages as a means to combine assets don't make sense when there are no assets to combine. And considering that through most of human history most people were slaves, serf or otherwise unfree and propertyless, you're proposing to return to a standards that never was a standard.
Fact of the matter is: For most of human history when people reached marrying age there were like a dozen potential partners to choose from. Figuring out which of those you like best isn't that hard. But today there are more pontential candidates than anyone can ever hope to evaluate. Which gives people the feeling that someone better might be just around the corner.

Regardless of culture, it used to be the case that young people in a town would start matching up with those of similar desirability until everyone who so wanted was matched up. Now with both eligible men and women being advertised widely people only consider the best prospects. This is great for those at the top who will date several at the same time and the rest feel shut out because it never occurs to them that they shook seek someone whose market value is more like their own. The end result is a bunch of single people who are resentful of the opposite sex.

In fiction, we see horrible stories where the woman is forced to marry someone absolutely horrible but I don't think this represents reality most of the time. i saw a documentary in some old eastern european culture and they had these yearly meets for the young to find their future husband/wife.
then all got cell phones and cancerous apps. now when at the large gatherings, all the young people stare at their phone and think they can get some 10 in some far away land, and none of them pair up.

Back between 1996-2001 I worked as a nurse at University of Houston campus clinic for students., My understanding is the university recruited heavily from China.and they came.Even back then the shortage of single females in China was an issue. I spoke to 3 male students about the shortage of women in their country and asked if they would consider marrying outside their race . The answer was unanimous NO. I found that interesting, if their bride could not be Chinese they choose to be single and possible end the family legacy .We all know that its not the son or eldest son that cares for his aging parents it's HIS WIFE! At present many aging Chinese are living in government housing because there is no son to care for them . The girls are stepping up to the job. Also many sons move far away and so the ancient tradition is dying .It happened here in parts of the US
The strangest thing is that men out number women in China. So it should be extremely easy for any young girl to get any guy due to scarcity. And yet, there is a crisis of leftover women. Everything is ass backwards nowadays.
Another aspect that I haven't noticed anyone mention yet in the comments is that a huge percentage of these 30+ year old single Chinese women are virgins (who never learned about sex education in school either). While that might pique the interest of some guys, it shouldn't. This is the problem with a culture that is overprotective and won't let young people date--sometimes even all the way through college. So these women get out into the world at 22 or even 25 without ever having had a boyfriend before. So yeah, when it comes to dating for these women, they are incredibly unrealistic about what a relationship is like, and they act super weird. I know because I work in China and have many 30+ year old single female colleagues. One colleague, who is actually fairly attractive, has gone on like dozens of first dates and has never gotten past that point... So there is no shortage of interest from men--it's mostly that these women still think that getting married is going to be like a fairy tale, and it's really pretty pathetic to watch.
Moral of the story: if you're a parent, you need to let your kid grow up to become an adult, and they need to learn how the world actually works. There are far more important things than just getting good grades on math exams...

My mom is indigenous Chinese and she married late. In our culture, she was considered an "old maid." She was a junior in high school at age 17, when she was finally sold off to my dad (the dowry)... 😂 she got married illegally to my dad, who was 24. She went to college & got her degree as a nurse while my dad worked at a factory his whole life (he died early in 2017).

Of course there are good ones too but overall the attitude towards wives is "stay at home. do your kitchen thing". We've seen our moms and grandmothers and women are opting out. I know many attractive 27+ year olds refusing to marry local guys. It's bad here too, but tbh at a core level it's just women's survival instincts kicking in, even if a lot of them personally want a family
