      @@KurNorock As I understand it, coming from a musical family, your range depends on how relaxed or tight your vocal cords are. Vocal cords never get any tighter, and trying to sing higher than your range can severely damage them. However, one can learn to relax their vocal cords to safely notes in a range lower than their natural one - which is likely how Goeff has been expanding his range over time to be able to sing in bass, even though he started and continues to consider himself a natural baritone. (Someone can feel free to correct me if I explained that poorly.)

    • @johndeeregreen4592
      @johndeeregreen4592 Před 3 lety +7

      He can say that all he wants, his natural speaking voice is below an average bass -- that's a good determination of a person's actual voice timbre. When he talks, his natural voice hovers around C2 to A1, which is quite low for even a bass singer. Most bass singers talk around an F2 and can sing several semitones below it.

    I didn't expect him to go lower either. But after listening to it 4 or 5 times, it was because the WHOLE song was LOW. When I watched just the last few seconds, it is a note he has sung before, and we have heard it. It was just 100% Bass, all song. I loved it, and that is why I didn't expect the ending Note either. Great Post.

    I appreciate the comment about bass singers having to fight to maintain stability. I'm a new bass singer (after years of thinking "I can't sing high like on the radio so I'm a bad singer", I finally had my eyes opened by people like Geoff, Avi Kaplan of Pentatonix, and Tim Faust of Home Free), and I felt discouraged at times and felt like I wasn't a bass b/c I felt exactly how you said it: like I was fighting for stability in my voice. But knowing that this is just a thing that bass singers deal with (like how singers in all ranges have various struggles associated to their range) make me feel better, like "I'm not an imposter, I'm just walking the same path as those before me". So thank you for that, and for another wonderful video!

    This particular rendition by Geoff brings to mind two of the bass singers that did the songs for Disney's animated Sleepy Hollow where Brom Bones does his song and bear does his numbers which Geoff also has a video out on. I have heard many bass singers over the years and very few have ever hit the lowest bass notes. Most of the time bass singers are found in choirs or barbershop quartets and a few southern gospel quartets. Recently Harold Statler passed away along with George Younce and J.D. Sumner our of the three J.D. had the deepest bass. You might want to listen to the Late Tennesee Ernie Ford's work to broaden your perspective for a broader range of comparison in the realm of bass singers. You may also want to give a listen to Ernie Haas and Signature Sound and check out their bass singer. Happy hunting and enjoy.
