New Wars and Revolutions - Demobilisation I THE GREAT WAR January 1919
Vložit

- In our first new episode, our host Jesse takes a look at the German Revolution of 1918/1919 and how the Spartacists under Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg tried to take power. We also take a look at the new conflicts that emerge right after the supposed "war to end all wars" and explain how the massive armies of the great powers were demobilized.

WE'RE BACK! What did you think about our first new episode with a brand new concept and, of course, a brand new host? We're glad you're on this new journey with us and we hope you enjoyed our first step together in a new direction. If you missed our coverage of the Paris Peace Conference, you will just need to wait a little longer till our next episode.
We will be much more diligent about our sources and sourcing from now on. You can usually find sources for certain statements on screen or in the subtitles as well as all sources used for an episode in the video description
The Great War its no problem even if it isn’t Indy. I hope you guys will build up great content in the future!
great work! hope you go back to cover events in the busier months during the less busy months.
I hope you guys dont stop anytime soon, new fan and i already love the channel
CZcamss history channel revolution continues!!!
The new host has big shoes to fill in, it might take some getting used to. Indie is extremely charismatic.
Initially: Indy can never be replaced.
*Jesse pronounces Sinn Fein correctly*
LONG LIVE JESSE!
Hopefully his Soloheadbeg was also not too bad.
@@TheGreatWar You are bosses
FuzzECoyote the king is dead. Long live the king
Maybe not but he's gone. Someone needed to step up and the new host did.
Im irish and i say it like "shin fein"
Great to see you in the game again!

So.... Kaiser Indy abdicated.
Then Chancellor Flo took power, until now? Oh well.
LONG LIVE CHANCELLOR JESSE!
But he wasn't democratically elec - oh wait. Neither were most Chancellors lmao
Bring back Kaiser Indy

I was confused not seeing Indy but this guy is alright, keep'em coming Jesse.

-King has died

Host is a likeable guy and I feel he will bring his own uniqueness to the show!!!
If not....gulag
@@yetigriff No Gulag for Jesse. He's proven his worth more than what they pay him. Twice as much, I'd say.
I think Jesse is a great narrator.
He definitely does. I'm saying that as new to this channel.
Glad you’re back TGW... you’re almost at a million subscribers
Yeah, they are at 997k subs, they are sooo near to 1 million 😊😁
It's way past time they finally reached one million, considering the quality of the content
They shoulda been at a million years ago
While I don't think Jesse is as charismatic as Indy, he has a very professional quality to him in place of it. It might be because Indy's background is as an entertainer when it comes to being in front of the camera, so their presentation is different. I think it's a great fit for the documentary style of the channel, and it also is respectful of Indy by echoing your (Flo's) previous statement of not trying to replace him. Even as a first episode, this definitely already is fulfilling the promise of quality and depth with excellent narration. Great work all around.
thanks, glad you liked it and recognize that we went into a different direction.
@@TheGreatWar I really like Jesse here, and his new videos over the past few years have been nothing but outstanding! I especially enjoy his Calvary episode. I’d like to see an episode on Canada in The Great War. the role of aircraft may be a video on the boxer rebellion
Nice! Not easy to replace Indy but you are doing a great job!
I'm hoping once Jesse gets comfortable he'll develop his own mannerisms, like how Indy ends each question with 'right'.
Hear hear
@20666666666 busy elsewhere!
That wasn't Indy?
@20666666666 He is doing World War 2
Quite an unexpected surprise, but a welcome one
General Kenobi
Four and a half years of war have taken a toll on Indy. He doesn't even look the same. 🤣🤣🤣
Everybody give Jesse a chance. We've all been so used to Indy. I'm excited about the future and see how the world recovers from thr Great War. 😉😉😉
"see how the world recovers from the Great War. "
Sorry about the spoiler, but not well.
What? He just has way more interesting projects, Between Two Wars, World War 2 and Sabaton History. He simply doesn't have time for the Great War.
Little Jenny Indy was discharged for shell shock
Little Jenny The world may recover from the Great War, but can we recover from the loss of Indy? 😂😏😉
@@s.31.l50 I know, right? ;)
I like the new host. First episode is always a tough one. I couldn't speak to a camera :D
The Chair of Wisdom still stands in the Corner of Contemplation! The Great War carries on!
Great to see the channel up and running again. I will have to get used to the new host but that will be a matter of time. Looking forward to see more stuff.
Having learnt about the sparticists and freikorps and the general state of Germany from 1919 - 1939 in school I can’t wait for this new chapter from TGW
Did you learn about them in Germany? I remember that what we learned did in school did not mention that the Spartakists called for a Revolution.
Sehr Gute
wilhelmrk I learned about them in independent reading when in grade school, school just introduced formally what my grandfathers went through.
wilhelmrk I’m from England but took GCSE history and it was part of the course (sorry about late reply)
I will miss Indie but I think Jesse is going to do OK. Glad the "desk of Alexander the Great" is still on set
I'm impressed by Jessie's pronounciation of non-English names. Great job, keep it rolling :)
Though I miss Indy at TGW, I really like the new host! Keep it up
0:01 Oh no, where is Indy?
31:47 Oh well, this guy isn't that bad.
He's hosting the new series on the World War Two channel.
Christmas didn't end it seems
When the war has to be over by Christmas,
and you cannot end the war...
...prolong the Christmas!
This channel just keeps on giving! Great new style and a great successor for Indy!
Definitely one of the most fascinating periods in modern history - the chaos and anarchy following the Armistice. Glad to see you guys will be covering it here!
Congratulations to the successful relaunch. Even as a german history fan, i learned some new things today. Thank you very much.
A host with perfect German pronunciation? What's happening to this Channel?
Almost perfect, he got "Ebert" right the first time he said it but mispronounced the first vowel the next few times he said it. Everything else was spot on IMO.
...WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO ABOUT IT?!
He speaks German
@Dr. Plagueman he doesn't "fake" any accent. He pronounces German very well. Turn on the subtitles if you want to see the spelling.
@Dr. Plagueman I speak German and know the language very well. Do you? Obviously not. Pronouncing a language well shows ability and respect for the language. Then again, when did an American ever respect any language...
Of course, your analysis and conclusion are BRILLIANT. Have you thought of writing a book on the subject? University language departments would be thrilled to have new and trailblazing information such as yours. Not to mention Berlitz, for example
Thought Jesse did really well for his first episode, can’t wait for new content!
I hope people aren't so harsh against Jesse. He's doing a great job
They will get used to him, we are sure.
Great to have you back, well done Jesse
It's nice to see you guys back in action.
To the new host, I believe you will hit your stride and find a nice balance between presenting the show and letting your personality come out. It took Indy a number of episodes before he "settled" into his role and transcended being the host; he became completely woven into the show and apart of its DNA.
I'm positive you will settle as well and fuse into the show itself, just as Indy did.
That was perfect: many details I never heard before in any film documentary. Maps and photos with reference to what is told. Questions being asked. Analyses, explanations and contexts displayed and clear. No dramatizing, no reenacting scenes, no fake sounds, no distracting music, no edutainment, no propaganda. Perfect! Please continue this way!
Welcome, Jesse! We're grateful the channel will continue to tell the story of the aftermath of the Great War.
I needed this fix. Definitely feels different with Jesse filling Indy's shoes. Reminds me of when Mike took over for Joel in mst3k. Preemptive congrats on 1mil subs.
Excellent video, my favourite part of the video is when you start talking about demobilization. We generally do not hear about that process and its difficulty, especially on the soldier's life.
Welcome back, guys! and welcome aboard, Jesse! You did great, and we'd like to see you more in future episodes!
I first heard of the German Revolution of 1918/1919 by reading the historic comic Berlin: City Of Stones. I haven't poked my head into that book in a long time, but what this video shows compared to what I remember from reading Berlin: City Of Stones is astonishing.
I can't wait. Love the channel. Always love to learn history.
Great job with the episode. Looking forward for more!
Hey that's Indy's German cousin. Cool intro and soundtrack btw
Thanks!
The workers will win! Raise the red flag!
I miss Indy but Im glad the show is back.
@Kommissar Rex you heart fascism? gross.
Very happy to see the channel back. Missed the regular episodes. Excited to see content from the interwar period. Always was excited to read about the aftermath and the consequences of the Great War. New host is great.
Happy you're still keeping this channel alive, Jesse does a great job presenting!
My Brother and I are looking forward for this channel! 😆
Yay, boys are back! Greetings to Jesse Alexander! Solid first perfomance I should say, keep it up and improving! Thanks for covering demobilisation, didn't hear much about it and you presented some interesting details for me. Should I rewatch Capitaine Conan now, hmm? :D
Jesse is very articulate, he's a great host.
MY BODY IS READY.
I need consent.
That ending quote hit me so hard. It must have been so terrible for those men i know they lived unlike those who fought and died but those who survived must of carried such a guilt because they were there and i feel so bad. At least they kept their lives but i'm sure so many of them suffered terribly because of the guilt.
Nice, glad this series is continuing on to look at the immediate repercussions of the war.
Your nervousness was palpable, but it did nothing to affect your very well done presentation. Bravo Jesse, looking forward to seeing more episodes!
I'm glad you did a new intro, it conveys the atmosphere of the post war world very well.
Get ready to rumble Freikorps and Spartacists!
Ah, yes. The famous Deutsch Donnybrook.
Who are you supposed to root against?
@@natekaufman1982 , :) Spartacists!
@@truthbetold5339 But the Freikorps suck too.
Come!
Communists of Germany!

FÜR DAS VOLK!
This is amazing! I'm so glad you guys decided to keep going, there's so much more history to learn. Congrats on finding a great new host.
I visited Liebknechts and Luxemburgs graves in Berlin last year. The are buried right beside Ulbrich and Honecker.
Top work team. Welcome Jesse, you're a worthy successor to Indy.
You've still got episodes on special/non-standard forces of the Great War to do.
Senegalese Tierelleurs (i apologize for misspelling it)
The French Foreign Legion
The Gurkhas
The Evzones
The Battalions of Death (though this one was technically covered in "Who Did What in World War One", so I can let it slide)
Super excited to see more content i was so sad in October of 2018 knowing this channel would be over SO GLAD ITS NOT KEEP UP THE FANTASTIC WORK!
If you remember the excellent Young Indiana Jones, it showed a lot of history of 1910-1920 that were little known to most people in the 90s. We need more TV like that.
That's a great new narrator! I'm looking forward to the next episodes.
i liked the new guy... his has got that "i know history and you dont " look going on. nice.
haha, I will pass that on.
@@TheGreatWar plz do. :)
Glad to see you guys are back! Great job detailing this very chaotic period.
What you say at 14:44 is incorrect. The Russians among the Spartacists included Soviet government representatives like Karl Radek, who was part of the Soviet coup in Russia a few years before. Radek was one of the passengers on the sealed train that carried Lenin and other Russian revolutionaries through Germany after the February Revolution in Russia. Despite involvement in the Spartacist uprising, he was released after a year, and returned to Russia to serve as Secretary of the Comintern.
Welcome to the channel Jesse.
You did a great job Jesse. I am glad to see you are just being yourself and not trying to be Indy (only Indy can be Indy). Keep it up.
I'm so glad you did this. When The Great War series ended I was screaming at the screen "WHAT HAPPENS NEXT I MUST KNOW!". I'm pumped.
Also, cool new intro.
I've always wanted The Great War to go into greater depth and social history. And you really did a great job!
Fantastic episode, really like the new host too. Keep up the great work like this and the future of the channel is (imo) very bright indeed!
Outstanding!!
Welcome back The Great War series ! Thank you Jesse for recounting us the exciting events of the aftermath of the war to "start" all wars !
Fantastic episode! You explain this confusing period in clear terms most people can follow... thank you.
Thank you, Jesse! Superb presentation of events which are often not covered at all in American schools.
Still, however they met their ends, I am not shedding any tears for the deaths of Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg.
Wrote a masters course semesters paper on you guys today. I study film management. :) Thank you for the inspiration! I wish lots of luck for the new direction the channel is taking, and I will keep watching.
So glad you guys are back! We need all this information, as we are still living with the results of the Great War! Welcome, Jesse!!
So glad this is back. Looking forward to the next episode.
This was an excellent summation of events in Germany and across Europe generally; thank you.
Great this is amazing! You have all our support! Keep it up. The new host is very likable!!
Great to see this channel return. Jesse has thus far done fine, in time I am sure he will grow into it. He can't be worse than I would be in front of a camera after all.
Very well done! Excellent in all regards. Congratulations on a superb production!
Outstanding Great Job Jesse
Imagine living in the middle of all this. How exciting it must have been in a time when people felt they could shape the future of their nation. Incredible.
Man this is the my favorite part of history, looking forward for your new videos
Great video! So glad you guys are continuing to tell the story!
09:10 that beard
omg, top 10 stach
ZZTOP is that old?
Ja
Love your channel, but it is not the same without Indy...
No, it won't be the same. But that doesn't mean it won't be good.
@@TheGreatWar Please don't get me wrong I don't mean that I don't like show, it is the opposite!
Great job to Jesse! And I really like that you get into details about the citations (e.g. page number) and give credit to them at the end. Production is superb as ever :)
Yes, demobilisation took a relatively long time. My grandfather - a Canadian artilleryman - who served in France 🇫🇷 and Belgium 🇧🇪 from mid 1915 until November 1918 was only demobilised in Canada in March of 1920! That's a long time after the armistice to get back to his family.
He was relatively lucky, however, because by the time he came back to Canada there were some opportunities open that saw him - as a returning war veteran and amputee - able to land a job with Canadian federal civil service... something that would become extremely helpful once the great depression hit. He was never, after that, without a solid paycheck so his family (and my father + all his siblings) had a very comfortable great depression... unlike so many others.
The Great War is back, baby
I was hoping Flo was going to host.
This Jesse guy's not bad, we will see.......
I love that you are keeping this important history going. I plan on being here for everyone. Maybe you could keep the ten minute video format with more numerous uploadings?
Love the new series!!!! A period of history largely missed!
Did you guys see "they shall not grow old"? Wonderful documentary and highly recommended.
SoCal Drifter yeah I watched it .it was really interesting
Hasn't seen a release in Germany so far.
Should I watch it? Love that the channel is up and running again.
I like the new host. I’m glad to see the series continue.
Looks like this channel will continue it's greatness. Happy to be watching!
Definitely missing Indy, but totally willing to give this fellow a shot! Nice to have you lads back!
Glad to see the series under way again with a new focus. Indy is a tough host to replace, but this guy will do well as long as he continues to be his own man, as he did in this debut.
Add a bit more inflection in your voice. Do find your own groove, but you should make your storytelling more engaging
thanks for the feedback
A welcome change; I warmly welcomed Jesse and called him a friend once I opened the video on my phone. He should become more expressive on the next video and he should keep his speech at a consistent pace; he's breaking in the middle of phrases and disrupting the rhythm. Wishing him and the rest of the team the best of luck :' )
this was a VERY welcome notification, glad to see yall again
So glad your back, was skeptical about a new host. But those worries can be laid to rest, u have yet another great host. Looking forward to seeing more episodes
The greatest series on The Great War is at it again. Keep up the great work guys. Jesse you have some big shoes to fill, but I'm positive you can do a great job and do Indy proud. I like the new into and I can't wait for the next video.
P.S. Will you guys be doing a review of Peter Jackson's They Shall Not Grow Old. I watched the documentary and would like to now your thoughts.
FANTASTIC! I LOVE THE NEW FORMAT; IT TRANSLATES PERFECTLY INTO THE INTER WAR PERIOD. JESSE HAS DONE AN EXCELLENT JOB; OF COURSE; THE ACCLIMATIZATION PERIOD WILL BE LONGER THAN A SINGLE EPISODE. I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE! THANK YOU GUYS!
Nicely done. Could watch these videos for hours
