How Much Water Should You Put In A Turtle Tank? | TURTLE WATER DEPTH

  • how much water should you put in a turtle tank? should you fill it halfway up?today I'm talking turtle water depth and how to make sure that your turtle will thrive (and not drown) by having the proper amount of water in your tank. some things to consider are your turtle's species, natural habitat, and physical characteristics, as well as their size and age. For most sliders, painteds, and maps, this could be a couple feet. For muds and musks, it may be several inches. In the end, it's about using a water depth that is natural and comfortable for the turtle.

My turtle just passed away less than an hour ago. I just want to say your videos helped me so much with how to properly care for turtles. I only had him for 7 months and he wasn't eating for a while or swimming. Then this morning, he stopped moving. I just went to the vet and they confirmed that he had been fighting a respiratory infection. He showed no signs of heartbeat, lung activity, or head and eye movement. He had everything that he needed including lighting, filtration, water heating, and was being fed every single day. I was hoping to see him to at least 1 year but I guess he could not battle the infection anymore. Thank you so much for all of these helpful videos.

That is so heartbreaking. Don't beat yourself up though because at the end of the day your turtle is with God now. That is a heartbreaking detail. Yeah sometimes turtles have problems that are pretty much unnoticeable until it's too late. I just found my turtle on the 22nd of September and since then I've been taking good care of her and she seems to be doing fine hopefully she lasts a good 7 months to at least a year but if not I know I did the best for her some turtles you just got to do the best you can.

When I got him he had a black spot on his shell and yeah. He was $20. The best $20 I have every spent.

For my 15 year old slider the rule of thumb has always been the deeper the better. Now let's remember Red eared sliders can get pretty big compared to when they were babies so the water depth just keeps getting deeper and deeper as they grow. My slider is full grown now and is pretty happy in a four foot water depth, loves to hang out and sleep on the bottom. I could even go deeper if I wanted too but she is happy with four feet so I'm happy with four feet lol. I just make sure she has a good area to climb out and bask in if she want, I keep a heat lamp over her basking area and she uses it when she wants. When my slider was a baby and tiny she was in a tank two feet deep and had no problems with that loves to dive down to the bottom. My only experience with turtles is this one turtle, got it for my son when he was 10 years old and my son is now 26 years old. I guess my 15 year old turtle is actually a 16 year old turtle lol. Remember turtles can live for a very long time, be sure to take that into consideration before getting one.

Very impressed with your video and knowledge. I have a Western African Mud Turtle. He is a very strong and fast swimmer and about 10 inches long. I keep him in a 75 G Aquarium, and I built a basking platform on top of the aquarium, the water is completely to the top. He LOVES this configuration, and has resting places. Then when he feels like it, he climbs out via a ramp to the cage on top to bask and take a break, this cage is half the size of the large aquarium. He has had this configuration for around 3 years now. Now the fun part. He shares his tank with his fish friends. I say friends because he does not eat them. He could eat them anytime he felt like but he leaves them alone. He has lived with some of these fish for nearly five years now.

I talked to a guy who studied musk turtles for 10 years, and based on that decided to give my tiny baby musk turtle lots of water with lots of driftwood, large riverrocks and plants. He's able to walk on rocks and plants and up the driftwood the way it's shaped like stairs. It's so cute, but I can't capture it on video or picture because once he sees me he comes to beg for food like a water puppy.

I feel so much better knowing that it's okay to have my musk turtle in more shallow water with lots of things in there for him to climb on 😅 He was a rescue, like you said, from a little fish bowl, and we've gone from 2 inches to 5 inches of water in the last year or so. He's much better now, and swimming better every day. He's about 2.5" long, so to hear you say "double the length" minimum for the water depth was a big relief. Thank you!

Wow I love how much you love to teach and share....subscribed! I rescued another turtle today during my run and this time there was a fence there and I was trying to find somewhere I could pull the fence out to get her in and right when I found it a guy yelled and said he had a place inside his area where he could slide it under. Fortunately, since I knew water comes out of the shell when I lifted it over my head to hand it to him I did not get any water on me and I was wondering how dirty it was and whether it could also be pee...Then I found you and although it didn't address my original reason for searching I am glad I found you so I can learn more. When in the Marines (long ago) I first encountered a snapping turtle and fortunately an officer rushed to me to tell me to be careful. Being from Chicago how would I know a turtle could snap and BAM it went for the stick the officer held out and I have never forgotten. Heck, we all had small turtles as pets when kids back then I had no idea - and to this day I remember that and was even careful today when I picked it up even though I can tell by the shell and tail...BUT I could make a mistake and if I knew 1% of what you knew I would feel safer so SUBSCRIBED! Sorry for rambling though lol.

After seeing your video, I'm going to put her into the bathtub until I can find a replacement tank upgraded to a 75 gl. and a new filter. I do take her out daily, to roam the entire first floor from a funny south facing sliding door, outside sometimes in the summer, and into the more shady north facing end of the house. She appears healthy, responsive, and able to recall areas that she enjoys out of the tank.

I'm not proud to say this, but I have been not taking care of my turtle at all. I've had my turtle, Froppy, for one year. I used to be really depressed, and I got him for a way of mental support, but it didn't work out so well when I found out a good filter costs 100 dollars. I bought one filter that I could say, was doing its job really well, but the problem is that my tank water was really small, the capacity was only around 7 gallons. I used to keep my 5 inch turtle in a 7 gallon tank, that was not filled all the way up because it could've easily escaped.(keep in mind I didn't have a lid). I kept my turtle in that exact same tank for one year, the water was like 2 inches tall. It was a really bad life for my turtle.
Some months ago, I saw my turtle refuse to eat, walk around or even sit on the magnetic island that couldn't keep his weight anymore, and when he'd sit, the island would sink. I got the sign. There was something wrong about the way I was treating him. I used to not feed him, or feed him rarely. I knew I had to do something, even though I had not even close to enough money. I couldn't ask my friend for money, because they are barely surviving, getting paid one dollar per hour and I usually give them a visit and order food while I'm there. (they are disabled and no workplace would accept them) So I got a job. At starbucks. Not the best paid, but it was good enough to save around 300 dollars to get everything my turtle needs. In 2 months, I had the money. With a lot of luck, my turtle survived because I cleaned the aquarium more often now, I fed him and I gave him conditions for him to survive.
Today was the day my turtle got the biggest present of his life. He got a 35 gallon tank, 31 inch wide and 15 inch tall. I filled it up all the way with tap water, and now I'm letting it sit for around a week(I have two reasons for that. 1: tap water is not safe,) And the second reason is that I ordered some really nice fake plants, a water filter with activated charcoal, a lid for my tank with led lights and a big island. I don't know if the tank is big enough, but it sure is better than before. My turtle will feel so much better, and probably get used to me.
I will watch more of your videos and other turtle owner content creators so I'd see how to take care of turtles.

It's hard for me to see if he's comfortable because he hides when he knows I'm watching. I've had him for about a week I don't pick him up unless I cleaning out his tub then I put him right back. His previous home people were always reaching their hands in and picking him up. I say all this to say I just set up his brand new aquarium and have the filter running but I think the water is to deep with the filter I cannot lower the water any lower than I have it. The aquarium is 20 gallon long the water is 5 inches high and he is about two inches not sure what to do honestly afraid to raise his water but I want to be able to keep his water clean.

Hi Im not sure if you will see this but I have a red eared slider and it has everything it needs especially the lights but recently the top of its shell starting fading and it’s fading quickly doesn’t look like she’ll rot but I’m not sure it also has been eating everyday and acting normal any suggestions I’m worried ;(

    • @TheTurtleGirl
      @TheTurtleGirl  Před 3 lety

it's possible that wen they get out of the water, the shell just dries out and looks a different color. shedding is also a normal and healthy possibility.

Hello, I found two red eared sliders but I do not have enough space nor money for a big tank. So can I grow my turtles in a large plastic container of dimensions around 78x56x43 cm ( it satisfies the 10 gallon thingie, it is almost 30 gallons) in my balcony where they will get enough sunlight to bask? Will it be good for them? Please reply I would really appreciate it. You could save two lives if you reply.

It depends on their sizes, if they are around 4 inch SCL then those tub can do just fine for the the being (you need to upgrade eventually). But if they are ≥ 7 inch, those tub is no good.

Hey turtle girl! Not sure if you remember me or not, but I just upgraded to a 55 gallon tank for my three red eared slider and so I needed a bigger filter for it. But the problem is for the filter to work it requires the water level to be almost to the top. Which means when the turtles are on their basking platform they can climb out. Any ideas on what I can do?

You can use egg crate or a Tupperware container... She has made a video on it! Another tip instead of UV and heat light you could use a CFL bulb and a normal bulb that would provide both heat and uv!
You don't need good food... You can feed carrots, cabbage (not very often) cilantro/coriander... Assuming that your turts are small, instead of a tank you could use crates that fruit and vegetables stores use and they often sell it very cheaply! I have to mention this is just TEMPORARY! Have a great time with your turts!
