  • Labeling and testing junk yard Gentex mirrors. The one with the compass is the 453. The non - mirror is the 313. Both use 3 wires to function, ground, hot for the homelink (garage door buttons), and hot for the auto dimming and compass of you have it.
Super easy to identify. Now you just need to figure out how you want to wire it up in your car. Tap a fuse are easy if you want to run it from your interior fuse box. If you have accessory lights or sun roof controls on your headliner, you may be able to identify ground and hots there also.
    Install at your own risk.

I always assumed the homelink took constant 12v to retain programming. I'd like to wire it to an ignition only power. Are uou sure it won't lose programming if not to constant?

I just snagged a 313 from the junk yard. Are the buttons supposed to illuminate?

@@petayV8 I have never tried. I usually target the ones with no wear and tear. The painted labels on the buttons seem to wear off pretty fast.

A year late, but to answer your question the Gentex 313 series includes circuitry on the internal PCB for backlight but all the resistors needed as well as the lights themselves are all missing. If you know your way around electronics and have the tools, you can take appart your mirror and populate the missing components and end up with a working backlight. (Activates automatically when the ambient sensor detects low light, no need for extra wires to the connector) all the buttons pop out from the inside out, if you have a very very thin tool you can slide it between the top of the button and the mirror itself and pry them out or take the mirror appart and remove them that way.
Honestly all the Gentex 313 from Nissan/Infiniti seem to have peeling buttons, probably because they were painted on to allow the backlight to shine through, which is dumb when it's not even installed by default
