I think it’s important when talking about nostalgia that when the MCU started, not a lot of people had nostalgia for iron man, cap, or thor. Heck, even for things like guardians or black panther weren’t culturally relevant. So writing it off as purely nostalgia I think is selling it short.
I agree to this too. As a comic book fanatic I enjoy the MCU becuase of nostalgia but credit goes to Feige and the writers/directors for getting Marvel appreciated and loved by those that never picked up a comic.
Well as much as I love Dean, he clearly is much more integrated in DC comics so I think he isn't giving much credit to MCU because he's not feeling the hype as much as he would be if DC would pull of something as huge as Marvel did.
@@ondrej_kindl11 I can see that. I often have to remind myself that it was weird that I had a cap shield painted on my bedroom wall in the 90's. So seeing these characters come to the big screen was something that I had been waiting for my whole life at that point.
@@GeneH339 I enjoy it because it has the 6 different movies that come together with a meet up movie. Just like parallel comics that had a cross over event.
That is insane. Because you don't have to do character development or 3 act arc. Just hit the ground running with the 3 hour movie.
Dean, dean dean... I am the same.. Some advice, Try getting healthier snacks and keep em by desk. And always tell yourself that you already have snacks on the desk
5:50 I dont know if Dean is doing it on purpose but he said "like", like, 1 trillion times
They were laughing at the latter "like" s when they were mentioned
TBH Trail Mix is high in carbs and fruit still has sugar. Go for cheeses (as long as you guys are active), or you can have dried meats around like sliced pepperoni or turkey cuts
OH- Beef Jerky is good too. Just drink water to off-set the salt content
21:00 Nice, Dean predicted the after credit scene
I do agree that the multiverse idea has so far been used to basically nostalgia bait people and comic fans in the movies (which i still enjoy).
In comics that plot device allows for some of the most creative and original storytelling. It’s basically used like a tool to allow writers and artists to create stories that other wise wouldn’t fly in the “main continuity”
Stories like the Batman who laughs, injustice, and Gotham by gaslight are some of the most creative stories and takes on characters. Even the dark knight returns was considered an else world story because of how different it’s take on Batman was, but it eventually changed Batman as a whole.
Anyways, love the podcasts and your superhero discussions! Sick booster-gold and super boy prime references dean! I get big vibes that you watched a lot of Batman the animated series and justice league unlimited
I think thats one of the main differences between Marvel and DC. Its understood that DC characters can be interpreted, depending on the writer, which leads to iconic and interesting comics in the main continuity like the ones you mentioned.
Marvel on the other hand, ain't that flexible. If they wanna do something fun with a character they either have to make it a What if or claim it's from an alternative timeline or something. When they don't it can be a hit (Superior Spiderman) or miss (Hail Hydra Captain America)
The deal with Star Wars Legends is that they had a team that made sure noone's story overlapped with another story in that it was all part of one grand story. When Disney bought them they said all those previous stories are no longer tied to Star Wars. You thought you were reading Star Wars for 30 years but it was fanfiction all along.
They made sure nothing overlapped? Does that really apply to everything?
Maybe the main comic series and similar stuff being run by Lucasfilm but there are so many small short stories, random games, etc. which all set out their own stories but don't necessarily fit in with other stuff
@@maxjones503 I haven't seen the documentary discussing it for years so all I can provide is a blanket statement from memory that there was a team of editors. Everything that was made in the Star Wars brand went through the team of editors to make sure there was no overlap.
6:05 Same Dean, same🤣
Dean uses 'like" pretty much every few seconds right after you talked about it :D
after they brought up the "like" thing, i couldn't stop hearing them say like haha. i'm the same way it's something we all gotta work on
side note , great freakin video ya'll, lotta good stuff
Bless you, Dean. Televison shows and movies these days are a dream come true to this die hard comic book collector since the 80's. I laugh at those that hate the superhero movies of today. Haters gonna hate! lol (but majority are probably non-comic book readers too so the power of nostalgia escapes them). Long live the DCU & MCU.
The meta data and description fight is real. I have ancient videos that are just incorrect D:
Ohhhh, Thanksgiving actually comes from an awesome old holiday called Martinmas. It took on pagan Autiminal Equinox feasting and ritual. The turkey was originally a duck or other migrating north african water foul. They'd flock into Europe and land in the freshly harvested fields to partake in the bugs and worms churned up in the soil. We'd sling a rock at a few and on the fire of tares and the thresh we'd toss chestnuts. Originally this day November 11th (why people see 11:11 so often harkens to this forgotten day) children would dress up like Father Time and carve root vegetables into lanterns and visit the houses in the village and ask for treats. Little nuts and fruit and such. History is fascinating. Martinmas is where we get Thanksgiving and Trick or Treating
@8:50 - Dean is pretty astute on this part - it's pretty baked into the concept at this point. My one caveat is that while, yes, both companies have had multiverses for roughly the same amount of time, Marvel hasn't rebooted its main continuity QUITE as many times as DC does, and when they do they don't typically blow up the universe or anything that dramatic - it tends to be more gradual and subtle, apart from the Secret Wars series in 2015 which saw the destruction of the Ultimate universe, which no longer served a purpose as the "hip, new, modern Marvel universe" because the MCU was now a thing, so they collapsed all the stuff worth keeping into the main universe... although they have since started slowly bringing the Ultimate universe back for some reason.
Only time I've had coffee taste SO MUCH different was in Kona, Hawaii (and get it there, it's SO MUCH better than Kona Coffee imported).
The Cornidog Cast is my favorite.
dean talks very similarily to owen wilson if you listen
buy some hot pockets and otter pops
@13:40 - Some context: the way the Sony/Disney deal works from what I understand is that they share custody of Spider-Man in the live action movies, so Kevin Feige can oversee production on that and make calls vis-a-vis casting, writing, keeping the continuity streamlined etc, but Sony is licensing it FROM Marvel and now that Marvel is owned lock stock and barrel by Disney, they are in a position where they have to keep making Spider-Man stuff to keep that license. This isn't normally an issue for them - even the worst Spider-Man films basically sell themselves - but because of the way the profits from those movies is split up (I wanna say it's like a 60-40 split in Marvel's favour last I checked), Sony doesn't make nearly as much as you'd think off of the mainline Spidey films, hence all their attempts to make spinoffs like Venom, Morbius, Sinister Six, Kraven the Hunter etc a thing; not sure where SpiderVerse fits in on that, mind.
But wait, there's more! Because of the way the contracts work, if Sony Pictures gets in hot water financially and their parent company in Japan decides enough is enough and sells them to, say, Amazon or whatever (not an unrealistic prospect), Disney automatically gets Spider-Man back, FOR FREE.
Jake's "Where is the line?" question was delivered with such honest emotion and lack of comedic intent, it really is an actual quandary.
Definitely get some blueberries for the next grocery run, they are a great snack at the computer 🤤
Jake, love Oreos and milk too
As a Brit, my pick for a character I'd love to see is Captain Britain. We're at a point where he'd no longer be the weirdest part of the MCU, and it brings in some cool multiverse stuff along with him. ;)
@16:10 - the best thing I've ever heard said about the idea of a "canon" is something I'll paraphrase from by Red from Overly Sarcastic Productions, when speaking about the stories of King Arthur and Robin Hood. Essentially it's this, nice and loud for the cheap seats: *THERE IS NO CANON! IT'S ALL MADE UP! NONE OF IT IS REAL, NONE OF IT WAS INTENDED TO BE THIS INTERWOVEN! IT'S MAKE BELIEVE!* Basically, much as we like to pretend that these mythologies were created out of whole cloth, they were always made up as they went along.
What are the blanket coats called?
A snuggie?
@@ac.creations Snuggie isn't open in the front like a robe.
@@esaedvik then they are just robes
It's not just a robe. It's a special thing but I forgot the name, don't listen to that troll who thinks he knows everything
Mannnnnn Wren eats, drinks, and licks EVVVVVERYTHIIIIING, from Robot spaghetti swords to drinking coin juice and even licking his one wheel. He's the new Mike from Life, only no one has to goad him into tasting/eating/drinking whatever. He's special. What's the worst thing you guys think Wren has either tasted/eaten, licked, or drank?
I want a video about Corridor's cockroach problem!
It's a common practice in the Nordics to take a 195+°F sauna and run into the snow or a hole in an icy lake etc.
As a fellow DC superfan I would like to know what Dean thinks of all the new DC Movies and Warner Bros DCEU!
Booster gold is a dc character dean 😄
Soft pretzels have to be the next step for sure
Jordan, get some Mike & Ike’s.
Like like like like like like ... That's all I hear after that discussion
The air fryer is a line too far.
9:01 Absolutly wrong.
If that would be the case, no marvel movie would have ever sold more than a few thousand tickets in Europe.
But i have to say a Multiverse makes the entire MCU rather... useless ? Why should i care about the Death of Ironman, if in the next Movie they have Ironman but with a Mustache from another univers ? Storytelling just dies if you can wipe away any sort of consequences or meaning.
But Civil War the movie wasn't the same story. And Watchmen was it's own story. Most of the MCU movies worked because they are beholden to themselves, and not the comics.
Yoooo
Cornritodog?
Hey !!! Thank you very much for the amazing videos you put out in the past years. Just watched the Christmas one and it was very heartwarming. I was wondering if you’d like to have a Canadian nurse on your podcast ? I know that wren’s wife is also a nurse and with the pandemic I thought I would be interesting to discuss healthcare and lifestyle in a positive way. Thank you again and have a wonderful new year.
Signed Émile ☺️🇨🇦
I still don't know why those venom movies are a success, they managed to make some horrendous movies and still got money
Yo am a personal chef, live also in Los Angeles when you need a chef. Give me a call lol, I also run a meal prep business. If you guys want free healthy meals, so that you dont worry about your weight. Am more than happy to hook you guys up.

what if.... you guys got into such a heated argument of Smash that you guys all smashed IRL, like smash with a grounded story only it's you guys. I peeped the game that Peter made, but I'd like to see who would win in an IRL smash tourney....
For the grocery run: buy all of the pocky flavors, buy death wish coffee, and buy hot pockets (for wren to obliterate ofc)
Dean... It's the bald fade that does that to us (white boys without super thick hair). We end up with just the bald part and it's no bueno 👎

Now that alternative milks exist, there's zero case for using cow milk. It's horrific for the environment and not for humans in the first place. Found a plant-based ice cream called Roar too and I basically have no reason to eat normal ice cream now, it's that good.
Jake using some hardcore Boomer dog whistles against the new generation. Yikes, my dude.
