  • Firstly, a HUGE THANK YOU to #fotoflite - the worlds largest library of aerial ship photos dating back to 1947, for the primary image used in this film.
    www.fotoflite.com
This film depicts the former #hoverlloyd #hoverport at #pegwellbay #ramsgate. The footage shows the site as it is now with a direct comparison to how it looked in its heyday thanks to the fantastic image obtained from #fotoflite
    Hoverlloyd operated the hovercraft Swift,
Sir Christopher, Prince of Wales and Sure between Ramsgate and Calais until 1982 when it merged with #seaspeed at #dover to create #hoverspeed
The Pegwell Bay site remained for a short time as a maintenance base until finally closing and subsequently being demolished.
You'll be surprised what remains of the terminal if you know where to look.....👀
The Hoverspeed hoverport at the Port of Dover Western Docks has also been demolished and now houses a large cargo terminal and marina.
Of the whole fleet, a single hovercraft remains to this day - the Princess Anne, the worlds largest hovercraft. She is now a static museum at Lee on Solent, Hampshire UK.
A walk about tour of Princess Anne can be found on my CZcams channel. Here is a link:

Photographs of the hoverports at the
Port of Dover, Calais and Boulogne in France can be found on my website www.a2bviasea.co.uk

I worked at Hoverlloyd 1974-1975. The booking staff worked upstairs, this side, above red dot 56secs in, if I recall. Duty free was on otherside, ground, restaurant was above overlooking the tarmac? I do remember Thomas Cook there It was a very busy, amazing place to work. Lots of Rolls Royces went into those craft and quite famous people. Management was generous to staff, at Christmas that year we received a huge hamper each During my time there was only 1 road in and out. Onboard staff wore red uniforms and always looked impeccable.
    Thank you for upload

Always sad to see abandoned places and buildings. But that's how it is. Things change over time. Thanks for sharing and have a nice day! // Bertil.

I was there today walking around and trying to remember what went where. This video really helped jog my memory !. Thank you for this wonderful video reminding me of many summer days spent on the open top deck of East Kent bus service 69 travelling to Ramsgate International Hoverport, where I then spent hours on the viewing deck watching these wonderful machines arriving and departing.

I clearly remember flying from here, because it was a flight with a pilot not a captain, turning sideways before sliding down that slip and into the sea. The ride over was fast and bumpy but in a fun way as the spray from the sea and churned up by those huge propellers on top hit the windows. It was definitely the most fun way to cross the channel. It’s sad to see it disappear but things change and I still have the memories.

Hi. Thanks for watching. Hoverlloyd operated from Pegwell Bay to Calais from the 1970s. They merged with Seaspeed which operated hovercraft from Dover to Boulogne, the newly formed Hoverspeed being based at Dover. The Pegwell Bay site was then used as a maintenance base until closing.
