  • Abandoned - Hoverlloyd - Hoverport at Pegwell Bay, Ramsgate in Kent - 2020
The Hoverport at Pegwell Bay in Kent has been abandoned since 1997. In 2020 the buildings are gone but a lot remains to be explored. It was the home of Hoverlloyd and the SRN4 Hovercraft.

In about approximately 1991 there was a go-kart circuit opened up called Ramsgate kart circuit. Run by a friend of my dad and as a 7 year old boy absolutely loved it,I was there with my dad helping get the place set up ready to open. The hovercraft had long since gone and the main terminal building had been set on fire and smashed to pieces on more than one occasion. I remember we went looking for bits we could use and found tables and chairs plus all sorts of other things we repurposed to use at the facilities for the kart circuit.

I didn't know that. I am jealous as I love karting and it would have been a fun location.

I am jealous. I never got the chance to go on the big ones. I used to watch them at Dover when I could as a kid. There is one on display at Lee on Solent now. I took a day trip to the Isle of Wight a few years ago just to go on a hovercraft 😀

Went accross to France many times in the 70's from here. Used to live in Westgate and could hear them from time to time even over that distance. Had some really rough crossings and some really smooth ones too. It only took about 40mins as i recall to cross over to Calais. I remember crossing the sand banks out at sea on one occasion, the Goodwin sands i think it was. Could see masts and parts of wrecked ships sticking out of the sand. All History now, such a shame......

I would have loved to have travelled on one of the big hovercraft. There is still one at Lee on Solent in a museum. At least it is history that can still be enjoyed unlike at Dover.

Excellent stuff, went down a couple of times last summer and it's fascinating to see parts that are left, i found a couple of old tile pieces, i didn't see the queueing numerals but it's only a decent 30 minute walk away from me.

I loved going there and I will go again to see how it continues to degrade. I want to make a better video next time - I am still learning,

You mention maintenance was still there until 1997? Not sure about that? The site was abandoned and derelict by 1992

You are correct. I should have said 1987 :)

The hover port is closed to cars now, but back in the day you could drive right onto the hovercraft and go from there to France. Unfortunately the hovercraft are now retired.
