The best imo

So is the raining ash in Chile that happened recently.

Ah yes the route that allegedly has Skarmory
It really should be a gen three mon. Same with Magcargo
@@Metaknighttheloneswordsmanno it shouldn’t lmao. Skarmory has always been synonymous with Johto. Slugma and Magcargo? Sure. Skarmory? Hell no.

As a child I used to think the glass-blower was literally saying "huff-puff", and not that it was the sound effect of him blowing the glass piece 😅
I thought he had a cough of because of the ashes

This route was so fun as a kid. Is still remember running around trying to turn all the grass green and these leaving the area to reset it only to do it again.

Lol I did that
Route 113 is a perfect example of good route design that's been missing from modern Pokemon games for awhile. It's visually interesting (soot snow and grass), it's got additional content (collecting the soot for the glass blower), it has unique encounters (spinda and skarmory), local lore (it ties into Mt. Chimney and Fallarbor Town, as well as the specialized trainer classes appearing to show what kind of people frequent the area), and it's got a fair amount of NPCs to both talk with and battle. The only thing it's missing is a secret area that you can come back and access with further progression with special rewards, but you could certainly argue the Pretty furniture and secret base location count for that.
Imo we need a ton more Route 113s and a ton less Poco Paths.
I think what I love about Route 113 and Mt. Chimney is something that is a general concept I love in, especially earlier, Pokémon regions where there's just unwritten, subtle worldbuilding that makes the game just feel that much more magical
4:33 Route 113 actually has an appearance in the manga! Nothing major, just characters looking at the sooty scenery. There is a funny moment of Ruby collecting massive bags of ash as a favor for Wallace, and sprinting to give them to the glassmaker offscreen, though!
Hoenn is home to me. Having grown up in okinawa when this game came out, it hit pretty close. Thanks for this!
Are there a lot of resemblies?
@@cecillewolters1995 when i was much younger, the tropical paradise and kind people everywhere felt much like how imagined the region to be. I forget where hoenn is inspired from, but in terms of locations, pretty similar [besides the desert]

As someone who experienced an ash storm, it actually was really cold as it blotted out the sun for days and made the sun red. Stupid forest fires causing volcano like storms.
As someone who started with Pokémon Crystal, it felt like a HUGE leap forward when I played Ruby for the first time.
I still remember when my Mom gave me the game all these years later. I don’t think any Pokémon game since had that sort of pure magic about it.
The music, the routes, the bad guys. This game felt much more high stakes.
Well put! I had a very similar experience. Hoenn had so many memorable places. Shoal Cave I spent so much time in. Sky Pillar as well but mainly because I was terrible at biking and did not know about repels. Also the whole underwater area and the legendary golems. Oh, and the shipwreck. No region ever felt that unique and diverse again for me. Newer regions have a lot of unique environments but they feel too patchworky for me. Hoenn feels very cohesive in comparison.
I started my journey with Pokemon Blue AND Pokemon Ruby AT ONCE! As a kid I was aware of gen 1 due to watching the anime regularly but gen 3 hadn't aired on TV in my country yet. It was crazy to see the level of upgrade in Ruby while simultaneously also playing Blue. I actually stopped playing Ruby midway so I could first finish Blue and then play Yellow, Gold and Crystal before resuming it.
It is. Very well put. The leap from gen 2 to 3 is bigger than gen 1 to 2
For me, this route was like telling me how far I've gone in the game even though you're still heading to the 4th gym. I mean first of all, you get 2 rides from Mr. Briney getting to an island to another coast to see more green and familiar terrain other than the sandy terrain from Dewford town then you got met with that volcano cave then what's behind the volcanoes (that ashy route, the meteor falls, the grey rocks, etc.) which hit really different. I know the later games have those too but the later games give you fly so early that you can head back home quite easily making the hometown less magical. This part makes you feel like you've gone so far yet so near specially when you look at the map seeing how many short cuts there are to your home and having the right side of the map still needed to be explored. But before you even try to explore the right side of Hoenn, after getting surf, it's quite easy to get lost or side tracked surfing at the left side of Hoenn exploring different islands, the abandoned ship and so on since Mr. Briney disappeared. And once you finally decide on crossing the river at route 118, it would be a new adventure! I think Hoenn in general is just magical and no other Gens replicate that feeling. Black and White 2 was pretty close however.
I LOVE route 113 and Fallarbor Town. 😊 the Music of Fallarbor Town brings me back to being that scrawny preteen girl, snuggled into the porch swing at her Grandmother’s house on a warm summer day, Playing Sapphire Version. I loved turning the Fallarbor Towm theme on and just admire the Vermont Green Mountain Vista that the porch overlooked. If in turn it on now and close my eyes, i can almost still hear my Grandma’s kind voice and see her face as well.
Aw, thanks for sharing such sweet vivid childhood memories!
Huff-puff! I love this route!
I remember going to the first Pokemon Symphonic Evolutions show in DC and having chills hearing the symphonic rendition of this theme. It's such a good short magical moment of the game that always makes me feel happy.
Enter Route 113, immerse yourself in the music, reflexively catch a snowflake on your tongue.
You really don’t want those “snowflakes” in your mouth.
Inhaling volcanic ash may be deadly but watching it fall like snow is beautiful. I wish the ground had been darker in ORAS to match the soot covered tall grass but I still enjoyed revisiting the area.
This route is noteworthy to me as the place where I was greeted by a Shedinja in my party after my Nincada evolved, and got to learn about all its crazy antics! Fun memories
Stop and step in the ashes. To me this something new with a Major environment theme.
*Lillie plays a glass flute*
Route 113 featuring Skarmory the Gen 3 Pokemon
i remember seeing skarmory for the first time in r/s, then a few years later finding one in crystal and being flabbergasted lol
It was originally snow!
In the files, a cut Snowboarder trainer class was supposed to be fought on 113!
I love the Volcanic Ash gimmick though. It fit next to Mt. Chimney.
Sinnoh got plenty of snow next generation, and that fit with Mt. Coronet.
I also really like the parasol lady. I'm quite fond of parasols as a Kirby fan and a train class having that as their defining feature is fun. Plus I really like her design and I think it's funny how she's probably the only one on the route being protected from coughing up ash.
Ah Yes! The route with Earthbound's Snowman theme.
It's such a brilliant usage of the theme, too!
Snow = Volcano ash is just so smart, and it's interpreted in a way that really fits the location!
I think I love route 113 even more since I know where the music comes from
It was originally snow, too! In the files, a cut Snowboarder trainer class was supposed to be fought on 113!
In other rpg games: volcanoes lies mythology monster either Phoenix or Dragons
In pokemon: sleeping volcanic Godzilla
@@Hex.A.Decimal interesting, I wonder if his dialog would be like, whoa, I thought this was snow! Let's battle tho
...Huh. Wow, thinking on it, there's more than just a similarity, isn't there? I never caught that.
2:28 yeah.. “flutes”
honestly its so sick i wish they could do more interesting routes like this
Really enjoyed this video!
In terms of other routes in Pokémon I consider 'iconic', I think it is mostly Hoenn that springs to mind. I think the improved graphics of the GBA compared to the Gen I and II games, and the theme of the region being 'people living with nature' combine well to create some really imaginative routes compared to the (mostly) ordinary grassy plains and pathways of Kanto and Johto.
If I had to name one section of Hoenn that is particularly iconic to me, I'd say the rainforests of Route 119 and Route 120. As a child playing Sapphire for the first time, entering Route 119 really felt like I was on a proper adventure, moving away from well-maintained paths between big cities and moving into something a lot more wild. My handcanon as a 9-year-old kid was that tourists who wanted to travel between Slateport and Lilycove would probably just take a ship, and it was only Pokemon Rangers who wanted to see the nature, or serious trainer who wanted challenge the Foretree Gym, who would go the long way around.
In terms of routes in other regions I like, I always found Johto Routes 38 and 39 exciting as a kid. Less for the way the routes looked and felt, but more for the music. Again, the sense of adventure and grandness of it always appealed to me as a child.
Route 113 is so cool. The atmosphere is so unique and the soot gimmick is very charming. One route I always look forward to (unless I'm trying to catch a Skarmory, those guys are allergic to Pokeballs).
This route, as well as frequent brushes with lava and traversal in the deep sea, makes me think that humans in the Pokemon world are way more durable than humans in the real world. The ash would be a respiratory hazard for real humans, because it's basically flaked glass made from volcanic mineral, yet there are even little kids hiding out under it when it should be destroying their eyes. It makes sense considering what they have to deal with on a regular basis, what with all of the fire breathing, blizzard whipping, sandstorm summoning, rock throwing beasts everywhere. Human in the world of Pokemon must have evolved to survive things that would kill us.
I always loved this route too, especially because it's a great example of great world building and contextualization! Hoenn is a tropical hot region, so having a snow route makes no sense, making it a "snow" route with volcano ashes was a genius idea to have one but without ruining this aspect. Great video :)
I have actually listened to this music on loop while commuting through the snow before.
Can confirm, it fits 110%.
One of my favorite memories of my childhood is exploring this magical area of sandshrews and spindas, and the shock of finding a skarmory for the first time
Probably my favourite route theme music of all time. Just iconic.
4:54 We are already in that time *cough* Lets go *cough*
man the name for your secret base qr code at the bottom had me ROLLING lol
3:16 I'll be replaying it on the 10th anniversary this year, so I'll save that.
I died from the sheer amount of nostalgic joy that this video brought me.
I remember spending a lot of time on this particular route. A mix of trying to catch a Skarmory, finding a Spinda I really liked, and just enjoying the music. This video reminded me of how well made the atmosphere and world design are in this game :)
Very wholesome video as always, I have always loved route 113 in generation 3. The music is especially lovely, beautiful, and serene.
But doesn't all that ash make many people in the Hoenn region, including Wally because of his respiratory problems, sick ?
And isn't that the reason why Wally has to go live in Verdanturf ? Because it's the one place in Hoenn that's completely spared by the ash ?
I don't think they confirmed that Wally was sick due the Ashes.
@@DigiPen92 Ah
Yes.
@@DigiPen92 never confirmed, but a likely source
Route 113's music is the only thing capable of absolutely breaking me, it's the absolute biggest source of melancholy for me. I still remember over 20 years ago when my Combusken evolved right after roasting a Skarmory near the glass workshop in my very first Sapphire playthrough when I was a little over 4 years old. It was a lonely and cold evening and I was sitting in my bear-themed orange folding chair by the TV in my old house and I still remember how warm the incandescent ceiling light looked. And that Blaziken? It was and still is the coolest Pokémon ever. Every time I hear Route 113 I just break down and cry silently, wishing I could go back to that evening even for a minute.
I don’t know why, but something about the route and the music made me think of Christmas every time I passed through
I remember I got this game on Christmas morning and by Christmas dinner I was here already had a swampert and was just running back and fourth for hours trying to get all of the flutes lol so iconic and a childhood memory I'll never forget
A route that actually gives you a reason to not just go back, but to hang out in it. Now that's world immersion.
Great video! that Kids WB bit at the end!!! bring back ALL the nostalgia!!
This route and its music have always been a favorite of mine. You making an entire video about 113 just earned you another subscriber
I'm so glad you mentioned how amazing the music is just for Route 113. It's one of my favourite songs from all of Pokemon and was only played on one route, very impactful
I remember finding a Skarmory when I was 8 or 9 and was so surprised. I didn’t know what it was and had no pokeballs to catch it so I bought some and spent a long time trying to find another. It was not until like a decade later that I learned that Skarmory was a Gen II pokemon and not a Gen III pokemon.
Dude, shout-out to you for making a video on a single Hoenn route! I love videos like this so it's super fun 😊
Probably the coolest route in all of Pokemon, there’s something so captivating about it every time I play through Hoenn
this kind of video is what i live for. Just a guy sharing his love for something completely innocuous that brings memories back from others. Its fantastic
I remember that when i was little, i was not able to reach this route because i did not know how to.
The first time i saw it was because a new friend in school had just got to it, and showed me his Skarmory. I was flaggerblasted by this route, it was so different from the rest of the game. I was immediately shocked haha
Route 113 has always been my favorite too!! I spent so much time there, and used to leave my gba open with the music playing.
Whimsical adventure music. I love it
Fun fact: Though there isn't much grass there, the Soot Sack can also collect ash from the grass patches in the Jagged Pass.
I had the sickest hideout when I was a kid. I would play my ruby version everyday. Loved the hot springs in Lavaridge town.
I am a huge fan of the glass workshop. I found the yellow flute particularly helpful. There are plenty of Pokémon that can inflict confusion.
Especially those damn Spinda, I hated fighting those things, their attack for that point made them pretty tough too...
Cant forget the route theme is a nod to Snowman, a track whose leitmotifs are present in all Mother games. This lends the wintery vibe more than anything to me!
I thought it was snow for my entire childhood and never understood, but that made it more mystical for me. The random route with snow and cool music. Nowadays I appreciate it more for what it actually is.
I was chatting with a friend about this route in particular like a day ago and we couldn't remember the name of it, we didn't even get to mention the actual number, but I randomly got this on my recommended. Banger vid
Loved this area so much, and the desert just before
made me think back to my childhood. thank you.
I could talk all day about how spectacular the route music is here. The echoing horns evoke such a feeling of adventure and the music here in general is a big part of why I think Route 113 is a big turning point in the story and gameplay. It’s a big shift from the routes/nature scenes the player has seen so far and this is right around the point where it feels like the region/the map are really starting to open up for the player. 10/10 game design
This route and entire section of the region to Meteor Falls was insane to me as a kid. It filled me with such wonder, and still does. I confess I definitely thought it was snow for a long while, but falling ash is even more unique and cooler! The Hoenn region remains my favourite to this day.
Spinda, spinda, spinda... OOOOOooo scarmary!
i feel the same way about this particular route! really original concept, bespoke vibes, and the music is soo good.
It's almost like they wanted to put a snowy area in Hoenn, but couldn't because of the region's warm climate. So they got very creative by showing what a tropical version of snow would look like. 113 really immersed me in the alien reality of volcanic ash being playground-like weather, drawing a parallel to snow.
Then there's the actual "Winter" area of Shoal Cave, which is late-game and located basically in the ocean, somewhere that could realistically be very cold despite Hoenn's climate.
Route 113 OST is the only route track I have ever downloaded. So good.
I remember coming across this area while being sick in bed as a kid. Middle school days, its also where i encountered my first shiny a spinda! I thought my game glitched cuz spinda was gray. Its also the time my crush walked passed me in class and flicked my power button off before i saved said spinda. I have mixed feelings about that girl now lol.
For all this year i was play Pokémon sapphire I thought it was snow ❄️ but it was volcano ashes
This route had my first ever shiny as a kid: slugma. Route 113 has a special place in my heart!
fond memories. i was so hell-bent on getting the black or white flutes for some reason that soot collecting led to me finding my first shiny lol
Cozy, nostalgic and adventurous is how I'd descrine Hoenn's Route 113.
Talking about a specific route actually sounds like an interesting idea. I could imagine this being something as a trend among Pokémon youtubers, each reviewing the route/cave/other location they most enjoyed
Mine was Route 120 (the route before the Safari Zone area), it's so calming and refreshing, especially after going through the tall grass and heavy rain beforehand.
Really great with its berry trees, calm lakes, not to mention the hideout for Registeel, which is my at least favorite among the Regis.
I love that the first response to my comment stayed in Gen 3, those gameshad such a diverse set of locations. It really made it stand out from previous games

I always thought this spot was really cool! And I was also surprised when I learned that skarmory was not a generation 3 Pokémon
This video made me cry. Miss u Hoenn. Good Memories
I've never seen this much love for a route.
I remember when I was a kid, thinking that that was snow. Gosh I felt so stupid when I learned that was actually volcanish ash.
Could not agree more about the music. One of my all time favorites

You must be red/green colorblind lol
This route will forever hold a place in my heart. It was where I found my first ever shiny when I was a kid. I caught it thinking it was some kind of error/glitch.
Slugma ❤️
funny you mention it sounds like winter music. years ago, someone combined the music of this route with the track “snowman” from mother 3, another gba nintendo RPG. they fit extremely well together. i cant find it anymore though.
Such a memorable region. So much adventure
Definitely one of the most iconic routes in Pokemon. Trekking through the ash felt so cool.
I had to comment because somebody FINALLY talked about how amazing this route is! This is one of my favorite songs in the series!
The nostalgia is hitting hard with this video
It's good that you like it so much, will make it all the more bearable as you're getting the flutes, the table and the chair from it.
Route 113 music gives Route 216 vibes in term of uniqueness.
I've got ashes in my eyelashes! ...I'm really glad someone else loves this route too ❤
The cartridge it was on is long lost, but this was where I found my first shiny while collecting ash. RIP Roxy the sandslash, I still wish I could have brought you up through the gens
3:20 You'll find that it is VERY similar to the Snowman theme from Earthbound Beginnings.
Yes, I think about this route quite often for not having played gen 3 in years
Definitely a memorable area. Forget we could catch Skarmory in this section (I was too casual to appreciate Skar) but the soot and Splinda were a nice touch.
What keeps falling into the volcano to keep the soot falling? It doesn't just fall for. Nothing
Since there's woods on the side of the vulcano,
I'm just gonna believe it's leaves.
Every now and then I yearn to go back to the night I discovered you could exchange the ash for items. Some kids Christmas movies were on, and all I needed to be happy with walking back and forth on the grass, it wasn't tedious, it was exhilarating for an 8yo me. Glad I got to be alive when I did
Such a fantastic game. I also had a wonderful time playing the remake, dang I think it’s time for a replay!!! Thanks for the wonderful video.
the nostalgia in that route puts me in tears.
