The formula 220 minus age is known to be underestimating older runners. However, 194 max HR is very high and might suggest there was a "blip" or spike. Look carefully at the HR graph on the Garmin app to find any unusual spikes. If you have never passed 180 on a very hard run, it could be another indication of this to be not the right max HR

Are you using a watch or chest strap to monitor your heart rate? 190 seems extremely high. Has it been that high normally? I wish my threshold was that high. I usually cap out at 165.

Thanks! I’m using a Garmin chest strap. My heart rate has always been high.

Heart rate is so tricky for me I don't quite understand it. When I started running 3 months ago it would spike up to 195+ barely doing anything. I just ran yesterday for 7 miles with 4 miles at 8 min mile pace and it only got to 181. So I have no clue what my max heart rate is but the default for most watches uses the 220 - age formula. I want a watch like yours that will adjust it like that, that's cool. I might get a chest strap but I've been using a hydration vest this summer so I won't be able to wear it.

It’s a mystery to me too and I have no idea how Garmin determines the Max HR, but my average rate is around 156 using a strap.
