FOILDRIVE - prone foiling update

  • Prone foiling with FoilDrive - moving from a 60ltr to a 32ltr board. I didn't expect this to work but as the saying goes - you can't until you can!!!!!!!!
    I must stress that this is NOT something that is recommended by FoilDrive - neither the standard Assist or the Assist Plus are designed to be used with a board this small.

    Thanks to your many posts, Dominic, I had my first flights on my 42 litre today. Soooo excited!
    For any people who might be wondering if it’s doable for them:
    Quatro 42 litres, 4 foot 10. My weight minus 50 litres!
    63 years old, 90 kg
    75cm mast, Axis PNG1300/375p/short fuselage, no wind, almost non-existent swell.
    Got 30 minutes out of the battery and flew 3 times out of many attempts, learning what did and didn’t work.
    I flew on my second attempt, which was amazing but it took quite a few more before I got my second one.
    - I got to my feet many times but was too slow in doing so. Quick pop-up is essential. If there’s any delay then the board loses speed, settles into the water and it’s over.
    - Pumping got me up on my first flight, but I flew up without pumping on my second. The third flight was also with pumping.
    - Riding into the almost non-existent swell was like going uphill and slowed the board so the game was over. I had to run parallel to any swell to have a chance of getting up.
    Next session will be about consolidation on the 90 litre and working on my pump game, then going back to the 42 litre to push the boundaries.
    Thanks again, Dominic!

    This is awesome. Great idea to use it for prone as well. Looks great how you pop up in an unbreaking wave. This video changed my mind in behave of the Foildrive. Great product for prone dowind, sup foil, prone surf foil without any special board or skills. I like it very much.

    I keep my prop close to the board so I cannot E-foil like you are doing but that seems fun too. I kept the prop high so that it is more like a regular foil when riding it.

      Yeah I keep it high unless like this spot I'm doing a lot of efoiling to get back to the start point after a long ride, or in my local spot when it's super choppy (most of the time unfortunately). TBH the props are mostly out of the water while in riding and even when they go in the water briefly I hardly notice it.

    I have watched all your videos -- another great one. I am getting ready to purchase the Foil Drive Assist PLUS. I have two boards that I was considering using with it. Armstrong Wing Surf 4'5" x 20" x 2.75" (34L) 7.5lbs or the 2016 Slingshot Alien Air 4'8" x 21.5" x 2.75" (39L) 9.5lbs. I plan to mount it just like you have it. Few questions for you: 1. Do I need to buy additional Board Cable Guides (looks like a pack comes with 2 long sections and 1 short section) in order to run the cable along the side of the board? 2. Which board of mine do you think would be better? 3. Which length Axis mast are you using? I have the Axis 75cm and 82cm masts. 4. I am guessing that your 180cm cable allows you to take the motor all the way down to the eFoil position near the fuselage. Is there any extra cable that you have to zip tie after you do that? 5. Have you ever thought about mounting the box 90 degrees to where you have it so that it is right between your feet. I know it might be a little more difficult to lay on but you are on your elbows already and it would place the weight of the battery box directly in the center of the board. I am 65kg (145lbs). I currently have the Axis PNG 1150, PNG 910b, and ART 899 front wings. I don't have any traditional surfing background but have done a lot of kite foiling, wake foiling and efoiling. My buddy and I were going to do tow in foiling with a jetski but I think this will eliminate the need for the jetski. I can currently flat water pump the PNG 910b for about 30-60 seconds. Sorry for all the questions but want to make sure I get everything that I need on the first shipment. If there is any other spare parts you recommend then let me know. Thanks and look forward to more of your videos.

    Dominic, thanks for pushing the envelope with the foil drive assist and making some great videos. Have you tried to push the envelope of using a small (45 or so liter board) for wing foiling by using the foil drive assist?

    • @dominichoskyns9091
      @dominichoskyns9091  Před rokem

      I've tried it for winging with the 60 ltr board and although not impossible it makes everything very difficult with the box in the middle of the board. With the 32 ltr board it's too difficult to keep the box out of the water.

    Awesome Dominic ! When the foildrive came out. I had that in mind but i quickly read that the transmission could be interrupted when the box was submerged. do you use the regular actual version or a specific one ? were you using the 1099 or 999 ? Thanks for sharing this .

    • @dominichoskyns9091
      @dominichoskyns9091  Před rokem +1

      It does loose connection when submerged which is why I mount it next to my front foot, then it stays above the water. It's the assist plus, nothing special or different about it. I use the1310, 1300, 1099, 999, 1010, 910, as, well as the kujira 1440, 1210 & 1095. It works with all of them, as always you just need to use the right foil for the conditions

    • @dominichoskyns9091
      @dominichoskyns9091  Před rokem

      I use the large, medium and two small connected together with the Y cable. I know FoilDrive say you shouldn't do full efoiling with anything but the large battery but I figure it's OK like this as there are long rest periods between efoiling while I ride the waves and pump as long as I can

  • @Aquazure2000

    Looks like an axis foil being used. I have a bsc 890 and will be psyched to do this as a down wind and prone set up with the foil drive. I wonder is there is a lot of flexibility and allowance in the foil size and shape that can be used?

    • @dominichoskyns9091
      @dominichoskyns9091  Před rokem +2

      The size foil you can use is very much affected by the size board you use. For prone downwinding I can get on foil with the 999 and 890 on my 60ltr board, but the smallest foil I can get on foil with my 32ltr board is the 1010, although I haven't tried the 1099 yet. For reference I'm 82kg

    Do you think that would work out on an Axis SP 860 surf front wing? Or would it be too small considering a 85 kgs rider? Board is a 37L axis carbon pump 4'6.

    • @dominichoskyns9091
      @dominichoskyns9091  Před rokem +1

      I'm afraid I don't know the SP range of foils at all, but looking at it's specs on the Axis website it look like you stand a very good chance of it working with that board, as long as you have a bit of a push from some swell - make sure you use foildrive to accelerate before the swell gets to you - the trick is to build up the speed you need before it gets to you or it'll pass under you. If you time it right and get your board speed up enough so the swell picks you up, you can then do a normal popup as if you are catching a normal wave. The smallest foils I've used successfully on my 4.0 32ltr board with foildrive like this are the kujira 1210 and the ART 899, and I'm only 3kg lighter than you.

    Great video! It looks like an opportunity to make wing foiling with a smaller (40L?) board a lot easier 😃 or will the wing handling and waterstart will be too much at the same time 🤔

    • @dominichoskyns9091
      @dominichoskyns9091  Před rokem +1

      The trouble with using FoilDrive with a very small board for winging is that it's almost impossible to keep the box above water while starting, even with the box positioned forwards. It is however great for using with a big board when the wind is super light to help you get on foil and especially if the wind drops

      @@dominichoskyns9091 thanks! Just wondering why it is so hard with a wing, as it works fine without wing in prone foiling, where There is no problem with the battery box. Is it just to much hassle or is a start with wing slower? (I have no experience in prone foiling and smaller boards). Keep up the briljant video’s!

    • @dominichoskyns9091
      @dominichoskyns9091  Před rokem +1

      @@wiepkjedegroot when using a small negative volume board with FoilDrive i have to have the battery box next to my front foot to keep it from going underwater, because if this happens it loses connection with the remote. This is fine for prone foiling as i am lying on the board and am up on my elbows which keeps my chest off the box, and the box is not underwater. When winging you have to get on your knees on the board to start. This makes using FoilDrive very difficult for two reasons, firstly the box is in the way of my left knee so it makes it really difficult to get onto or to balance on the board without hurting my knee, and secondly it's almost impossible to keep the box out of the water because the board sinks more when kneeling on it rather than lying on it. All this means it is so hard to use it in this way that IMO it's not worth the hassle

      Prone just means that you are using such a small board that you have to lie on it rather than stand up on it like a SUP. They are harder to get started but are much more maneuverable when on foil

    you and the surfdoc really pushing the limits on these foil drives for what most riders are really after which is riding smaller pro style foil boards. I hope the Foil Drive team takes your concepts and incorporates them into a more prone specific product. It’s hard to justify spending close to 3k usd for these devices knowing that there’s a bunch of hacks to get it to work in a way it was never intended or designed for.
