  • Meradalir Volcano seen in the evening of August 15th, 2022. We just returned from our 5th Volcano expedition the newly erupting in Meradalir valleys. Volcano changed a lot. Now we don't have a small crater, it's gone dormant and big cone almost closed itself with just one exit facing south.

    The explanation that eventually smaller fissures will simply be buried under the new lava makes sense to me, but it doesn't mean that they are extinct, unseen and below the apparently solidified surface they could still be adding to the total lava outflow despite us not seeing it.

    • @GaldirEonai
      @GaldirEonai Před rokem +1

      Usually the way it works is that the lava from the smaller fissures takes the path of least resistance and ends up in the newly-formed main vent.

    • @johnzuijdveld9585
      @johnzuijdveld9585 Před rokem

      @@GaldirEonai That too.
      In last yrs. eruption event a line of fissures emerged from the one that ended as becoming the main one to towards the west (other side of the outlet channel that formed), These didn't last but just as everyone was predicting that the main event was over there came a short time later a new outflow which came from under the west wall of the volcano, which made me think that this indicated a weak spot on that side of the volcano and that more would come from it.
      I think my direction sense is good altho I did get a little confused directionally due to the changes in vantage points of the videos I watched. BUT the main lava out flow came from one side and the late revival was on the opposite side.
      Phew! that took more to explain than I thought it would! 😓

    The lava level wasn’t rising yesterday, nor was it today, in fact there were posts from the Icelandic university that the lava lake dropped serveral meters and the measurements show the Lava effusion rates were between 2-4 cubic meters per second the past 4 days. The eruption is at risk of ending if things don’t pick up with the current fissure or new fissures don’t open up.

      @mikewright447 Před rokem +3

      the crater lake dropped because there was another split in the crater that let the lava out at a lower level than the lip facing the camera and there was a small breakout around the back as well , but they did say that the eruption has moved through the different phases quicker than the 2021 eruption (which would suggest a shorter eruption) and at one point even stopped for an hour but they still think it will last for longer as they said the chamber held twice as much as the 2021 event ! , imho the chamber has now been emptied and is now getting filled from a deeper depth which would account for an increased amount of gasses and the time both the big vent and the smaller one were both roaring up like fireworks as new gas laden magma started to surface but thats just mho.
