I believe this was the last major meet where the GDR competed as such. Breuer was such a cool customer, had zero panic as the Soviet runner passed her on the backstretch and then finished in her characteristic turbo mode to win by 15+ meters.

"Bronze" for GB - behind USSR and DDR. Really a gold medal winning run by Linda Keogh with a great finish.

How the hell did Marie Jose Perec go from this to Olympic Champion in the space of two years??

@@leecornwall8381 You're wrong at this time she was trained by Jacques Piasenta. Pérec a was already a rough diament in 1990. A year of polishing was necessary whitout forgetting years of hard work. That's how she became one of the best 400m's runner in History.
      A legend 👑

Why is that so shocking? Perec was only 22 at the time and took bronze in the open 400 at 50.8; her star was clearly on the rise.

Every one was on roids at the time and if you think otherwise you are dumb. Its just that some had better drugs and some simply took it too far. The war of farmaceutical companies simbolises 80s athletics perfectly. Talented athletes getting souped up for even better results. The runners were fairly close most of the time it was dominating by a single country that was the issue. Every one is always going to point finger at the winner. Now pair up a clean athlete with a doped one and watch the clean one get dusted such is the advantage. Part of the game at the time and still today unfortunately you simply can't win without it. Americans presented themselves as the model of cleanliness and honesty until Carl Lewis "cold medicine" got swept under the rug and Flo Jo retired at the peak of her powers when more serious drug testing was introduced after Ben Johnson fiasco. Her times went absolutely rapid in the last 2 yrs and just as she was starting to shine she retired... Its simply too obvious for me to see past it. Every one played a game its just that germans and soviets simply did it better than others.
