I expect Minmini by Halitha Shameem to be the biggest surprise of 2023. This is because she has filmed the first half of the film seven years back and then its filming was continued last year. Kudos to her constant perseverance to hold on to the film for these years .Her films and anthology have always had a unique perspective. So eagerly waiting on how this film is gonna surprise me :)

“Ayalaan”, a sci-fi by Ravi Kumar starring SK. Because if you look at director’s previous film that is “Indru Netru Naalai” he gave a very good film involving time travel explained in a very simple relatable scenes which was understood by our Tamil audience unlike 24 which was also dealing with the same genre which couldn’t. In engineering terms INN was local author while 24 was foreign author before a sem exam :) Name a Tamil film which involves aliens ? I can’t think of many. So if he manages to pull of the same he did in prev film im sure ayalaan will be a game changer. P.S: Hopefully it releases in 2023 because it was under post prod for a very long time.
24 was really gud time travel movie,the thing is our tamil audience couldn't understand how they r trying to finish climax and eventually many didn't like it.but I liked it cuz I'm a fan of time travel movies who saw many mind bending time travel movies in Hollywood.so it was gud attempt by director Even indra netru naalai was superb sci fiction movie
Few months back, I watched one of the interviews of a director in which he shares his list of movies which influenced him. His take on violence is fascinating for me. When he mentioned a line from old boy and how he placed that in his movie "puriyadha pudhir", fascinated me even more. At that time, i thought what if a pure genre specific action movie was made by a director of his sensibilities. Few days later i saw a movie poster in which shirt less Sundeep krishnan having a gun in his hand, standing on top of a some stage or something surrounded by group of people pointing weapons at him, with only faces and hands visible that too beneath Sundeep's knee level. The poster is dominated by blood red colour denoting the violence with mud yellow font stating the director's name "Ranjith Jeyakodi". I am super excited for the movie "Michael". I hope this is going to give surprising movie watching experience for me this year. (In a good way) (Later that day, I am even more excited to know Vijay sethupathi also joined the cast for a interesting role)
From my point of view the most surprising 2023 movie is Thalapathy 67 The reason for it is Lokesh kanagaraj I belive that Lokesh sir will definitely give his best because we saw in vikram that how beautifuly he gave space for Fahad fasil, Vijay sethupathi and every character in his movie has an important role. I am juiced-up for every single films of this year, firstly PonniyinSelvan-2 though I read the novel I am eagerly waiting to witness the magic of Mani sir and ARR. Secondly Thalapathy67 still hopes rollin' on my mind that the film gonna be a part of LCU(Lokesh Cinematic Universe) if it is true then Tamil cinema will again grab our lost spotlight. Thirdly Indian-2 and Jailer. Indian is one of all time favorite Shankar sir film, and one of my all time favorite Kamal sir's character. For Jailer I am waiting to see Nelson's stuff like how he managed and painted every single doyen actors in a huge star's film. Finally AK62 Naanum Rowdy Dhaan one of the best feel good Rom-Com film of Tamil cinema but after NRD no other Vignesh shivan's film fascinated me, KVRK I walked out of theatre after intermission😞 same as Jailer I am waiting to see how Vicky gonna handle AK.
Iraivan by I.Ahmed might be a surprise this year with Jayam Ravi and Nayanthara. I personally loved every single work by the filmmaker. He might be one of the most of capable of handling a serious situation with a tone inside. So my expectations go for Iraivan!
Obviously there are beautiful films coming. But the film I am excited for apart from all and to answer your question is Minmini, director Halitha. I loved boyhood by Richard Linklater. The fim was shot for 14 years and director even said that, "If I die, you take up the project" to Ethan Hawke. So now Minmini followed the same route and let the actors grow for 7 years and finished shooting now, this is something I am really excited about. This might be something people don't hype like other films. But this would be my choice.

I feel jailer might be a surprise because Nelson is managing a huge star cast which is actually a dream come true tbh and no one would want to see that opportunity wasted. And since Beast, Nelson has been trolled massively, I am keeping my expectations reasonable but if it works, it will wreck absolute havoc.

I feel Jailer might be the biggest surprise of this year. The massive updates on the cast and crew reminded me that Nelson gives equal screen space and power to all of the characters, rather than a Protagonist driven screenplay, and ofcourse, it is THALAIVAR's film, I feel that we can witness an unseen side of Rajinikanth. Following the outcome of Beast, I think Nelson would have focused even more on the script to handle such a huge starcast. Hope Jailer to be a comeback for both Thalaivar and Nelson.

CAPTAIN MILLER. Arun Matheswaran is an excellent filmmaker who makes films that have never failed to show gore/violence. This film might be a creative fictional version of a true event that happened in Sri Lanka where a 21 year old fearless member of the LTTE drove a truck into a military base with explosives, burning up the srilankan base. If this is the plot of Captain Miller by Arun, We are onto some huge violent action thriller. As for the technical part, I could see some excellent people behind the screens too. I think Captain Miller will make 2023 huge.

Viduthalai by vetrimaran will be the biggest surprise... We had no vetrimaran film when this pan indian reach/celebration vibes started.. Other industries were like we have Neel,SSR who never delivered flops.. We were like "Vetrimaran theriyuma da" N we badly wanted his film to get released .

My expectations are on Karthik narein's Nirangal moondru and Beginning. The former is a hyperlink movie so we can expect a racy extraordinary narration from Karthik. The latter one is a movie of 2 stories which are splitting the screen nd I am so excited about how these two stories can be correlated and how it ll be in the silver screen.

2 films can surprise to a great extent: 1. AK 62: The combo itself is refreshing. It's been a long time since we have seen AK in a lighter role(Expecting a lighter role). Ofcourse action will be included but this time it is rumoured that Santhanam has also come into the film which might very well boost the entire film as Vignesh Shivn is good in comical part along with the romantic part. 2. Jailer: One main thing is both Super star and Nelson needs a comeback and not to forget that Nelson has given 2 hits before Beast. Actually ennaku Japan country romba pudikkum, adha eppudi express panna poranga is my greatest desire of 2023. Next I think would be T-67, I am just waiting for this moment from the release of Vikram, and unmaiya sollanumna I am really tensed with the story Lokesh is about to bring.

While everyone is saying the biggest surprises would be Thalapathy 67 and PS2, etc., we know these are already going to be good. So, it's not a surprise. I am guessing Jailer would be a bigger surprise than these two. Mostly because, the previous venture of Nelson 'Beast' didn't come out great and was trolled to its death. So Nelson seems to be more serious this time, and will probably improve a lot of things he did wrongly in Beast. For example, this time I am guessing he took way longer to work on the script judging the film was announced way before. Plus, the producers 'Sun Pictures' even tho money-minded, seem to have a lot of hope on this film as they are getting huge stars from other industries like Mohanlal and Shivaraj Kumar. If they didn't believe in Nelson, they most likely wouldn't even bother, right? Plus, these actors themselves aren't people who act for money or just because of the bonds they have with other actors. They seem to have a lot of trust, and they are definitely going big this time. In Nelson we trust.

I think the most surprising film of the year would be thalapathy 67. As we have seen in vikram lokesh has reached out every artists maximum potential out them. The first half was fully seen through fahad fazils perspective and there was only 1 dialogue for kamal sir. As a vijay fan I would like to see the actor in vijay more. We've seen the actor in vijay only few times. Characters like rayappan and JD had given him a space as an actor to grow. And over the last decade most of the movies was only focused on Vijay's charcter and i believe this wont be the case with thalapathy 67. And more importantly this might be a boost for vijay to slowly shift from mass entertaining movies to more story based movies.

From my POV Thalapathy 67 wil make a great impact to tamil cinema and audience in the way there watching a film , Vijay is huge star with immese family audience and director like loki can change audience perpective of watching a film, Already he had done with VIKRAM but family refuses to watch but having A STAr like Vijay it may change. Hereafter We won't getting any template or tailor made films carrying 5 songs or typical commercial angle wil change from here on , Next wave of commercial cinema is will grow after T67.
The most surprising movie will be the movie that we haven't heard of yet. Because I feel all these movies have a particular set of expectations and fan following along with it therefore, how good or perfect the movie is expectations are going to come with disappointments and trolls so any of the movies you mentioned won't be the most surprising one. To answer your question the most surprising movie will be something that brings in regular cinema lovers initially through an exciting trailer and becomes a blockbuster through word of mouth will be the most surprising movie of 2023.

Captain Miller: Reason being Arun is strong in film making techniques and Dhanush being strong in acting. A period film definitely needs both these qualities added with GV music which we ardently saw in title announcement. Dhanush being an international figure, this film would be interesting and create a buzz in international market as well considering the subject.
CAPTAIN MILLER ➡CAPTAIN(Arya's movie) - became a flop because of its poor vfx, probably due to insufficient post production time. ➡MILLER's planet (from interstellar) - every hour on this planet is roughly 7 years in Earth. ▶Hence, CAPTAIN movie from MILLER's planet (CAPTAIN MILLER) would be a great film.
Captain Miller is gonna be a biggest surprise because: 1. Dhanush has never been in a period film except some part in Anegan and Asuran( Which is not period tho. The flashback scene im talking about) 2. Dhanush's recent films if we see the last 5 films... We can see that he is one a path where his graph is going on top... And it might go on with captain miller 3. Arun Matheswaran tho he is from Thiayagarajan Kumararaja school... He waits and writes the perfect and far fetched script and makes it to perfection. If we see Rocky and Saani kaayidham these were very original films but rocky theatre la perusa Audience paakala... Saani kaayidham released in prime video but oore kondaduchu... I feel people's perspective towards films are changing and they are starting to celebrate original scripts and Arun never disappointed us... So Captain Miller is my choice.

I think maveeran will suprise us. Because Mandela is not just a political film the humour in that film is also worked out well. So maveeran will perfectly suit for Siva Karthikeyan's current image as an entertainer who trying to become a mass hero. And also I always have this thing that any film which put effort in their publicity designs or videos that film will have chance to be a good film. I really loved maveeran comic book style designs in their posters videos and the yellow red colour pattern in their designs. In that sense maveeran will definitely work out.
My biggest gut feel says it's going to be Thalapathy 67. It's not just the director and actor combo that could make this film a genuine surprise but also the ensemble cast that includes names like Action King Arjun, Trisha, Mansoor Ali Khan, GVM, Myshkin, and a lot more. Also Lokesh mentioned this to be a full on action entertainer in one of his interviews. Yes, expecting this film to be Fully Action. And yes, of course, Fully Filmy. 😍
There's a rumour going on that Lokesh acquired the rights of "A History of Violence" film, if that's for Thalapathy67 and comes unstoppable because Lokesh is known for his true genre movies so i net this will create History and "A benchmark of Violence"

Few months back, I watched one of the interviews of a director in which he shares his list of movies which influenced him. His take on violence is fascinating for me. When he mentioned a line from old boy and how he placed that in his movie "puriyadha pudhir", fascinated me even more. At that time, i thought what if a pure genre specific action movie was made by a director of his sensibilities. Few days later i saw a movie poster in which shirt less Sundeep krishnan having a gun in his hand, standing on top of a some stage or something surrounded by group of people pointing weapons at him, with only faces and hands visible that too beneath Sundeep's knee level. The poster is dominated by blood red colour denoting the violence with mud yellow font stating the director's name "Ranjith Jeyakodi". I am super excited for the movie "Michael".
I hope this is going to give surprising movie watching experience for me this year. (In a good way)

I am juiced-up for every single films of this year, firstly PonniyinSelvan-2 though I read the novel I am eagerly waiting to witness the magic of Mani sir and ARR. Secondly Thalapathy67 still hopes rollin' on my mind that the film gonna be a part of LCU(Lokesh Cinematic Universe) if it is true then Tamil cinema will again grab our lost spotlight. Thirdly Indian-2 and Jailer. Indian is one of all time favorite Shankar sir film, and one of my all time favorite Kamal sir's character. For Jailer I am waiting to see Nelson's stuff like how he managed and painted every single doyen actors in a huge star's film. Finally AK62 Naanum Rowdy Dhaan one of the best feel good Rom-Com film of Tamil cinema but after NRD no other Vignesh shivan's film fascinated me, KVRK I walked out of theatre after intermission😞 same as Jailer I am waiting to see how Vicky gonna handle AK.
Iraivan by I.Ahmed might be a surprise this year with Jayam Ravi and Nayanthara. I personally loved every single work by the filmmaker. He might be one of the most of capable of handling a serious situation with a tone inside. So my expectations go for Iraivan!

Obviously there are beautiful films coming. But the film I am excited for apart from all and to answer your question is Minmini, director Halitha. I loved boyhood by Richard Linklater. The fim was shot for 14 years and director even said that, "If I die, you take up the project" to Ethan Hawke. So now Minmini followed the same route and let the actors grow for 7 years and finished shooting now, this is something I am really excited about. This might be something people don't hype like other films. But this would be my choice.

I feel Jailer might be the biggest surprise of this year. The massive updates on the cast and crew reminded me that Nelson gives equal screen space and power to all of the characters, rather than a Protagonist driven screenplay, and ofcourse, it is THALAIVAR's film, I feel that we can witness an unseen side of Rajinikanth. Following the outcome of Beast, I think Nelson would have focused even more on the script to handle such a huge starcast. Hope Jailer to be a comeback for both Thalaivar and Nelson.

CAPTAIN MILLER. Arun Matheswaran is an excellent filmmaker who makes films that have never failed to show gore/violence. This film might be a creative fictional version of a true event that happened in Sri Lanka where a 21 year old fearless member of the LTTE drove a truck into a military base with explosives, burning up the srilankan base. If this is the plot of Captain Miller by Arun, We are onto some huge violent action thriller. As for the technical part, I could see some excellent people behind the screens too. I think Captain Miller will make 2023 huge.

Long Raghava Lawrence lineup got many interesting filmsand #Suriya42 definitely bcz suriya at his present form with Siva&team who knows what they are cooking. Its definitely gonna be out of the box commercial historical movie.
My expectations are on Karthik narein's Nirangal moondru and Beginning. The former is a hyperlink movie so we can expect a racy extraordinary narration from Karthik. The latter one is a movie of 2 stories which are splitting the screen nd I am so excited about how these two stories can be correlated and how it ll be in the silver screen.
For me it's jappan from the poster itself it's giving me a vibe of movies like bullet train a funny comedy sarcastic action thriller and Raju Murugan not a ordinary writer and the main thing is the mystery box which always surprise us Mr. KARTHI.
I feel like thangaalan is the going to be the surprise because it gives me the maruthnayagam vibes and Pa ranjith too is really talented . Can’t wait
I think in 2023 the Tamil film that will be the biggest surprise will be Karthi's Japan. The reason I think so is because Karthi has been chosing great scripts all along his career. Eagerly looking forward to what he has chosen as his milestone 25th film. And to add on top of it, Raju Murugan is directing it who came up with Amazing films like Joker and Cuckoo. I am sure it will surprise everyone
2 films can surprise to a great extent:
1. AK 62: The combo itself is refreshing. It's been a long time since we have seen AK in a lighter role(Expecting a lighter role). Ofcourse action will be included but this time it is rumoured that Santhanam has also come into the film which might very well boost the entire film as Vignesh Shivn is good in comical part along with the romantic part.
2. Jailer: One main thing is both Super star and Nelson needs a comeback and not to forget that Nelson has given 2 hits before Beast. He has hardly come on media after Beast and I feel he is cooking something big for Jailer. Also the casting 🔥.
My One such big surprise of this year would be RunBabyRun... and SingaporeSaloon...
Able to see a unusual or completely new RJ Balaji which will be the major factor of the film

Japan is the most in my expectation, oru differentana look by Karthi, and most intriguing and Japan would be a different perspective of Tamil cinema in my opinion. Actually ennaku Japan country romba pudikkum, adha eppudi express panna poranga is my greatest desire of 2023. Next I think would be T-67, I am just waiting for this moment from the release of Vikram, and unmaiya sollanumna I am really tensed with the story Lokesh is about to bring.
T67 will be my bet not only because of loki and vijay but for Deeraj vaidy who joined as additional screenplay writer,the director of cult classic jil jung juk (which had so many references of vikram starting of from the word ROLEX and using montage songs) who havent done any film since jil jung juk..Eagerly waiting for his comeback..
While everyone is saying the biggest surprises would be Thalapathy 67 and PS2, etc., we know these are already going to be good. So, it's not a surprise. I am guessing Jailer would be a bigger surprise than these two. Mostly because, the previous venture of Nelson 'Beast' didn't come out great and was trolled to its death. So Nelson seems to be more serious this time, and will probably improve a lot of things he did wrongly in Beast. For example, this time I am guessing he took way longer to work on the script judging the film was announced way before. Plus, the producers 'Sun Pictures' even tho money-minded, seem to have a lot of hope on this film as they are getting huge stars from other industries like Mohanlal and Shivaraj Kumar. If they didn't believe in Nelson, they most likely wouldn't even bother, right? Plus, these actors themselves aren't people who act for money or just because of the bonds they have with other actors. They seem to have a lot of trust, and they are definitely going big this time. In Nelson we trust.

Viduthalai's box office would be a surprise I think. Initially there was some news that the film will go to festival circuits and then come to main stream. But not sure how they will release. Either way people are longing for a VM film after asuran. I think viduthalai will be a next big leap for him with his new combination. I think THALAPATHY 67 , will be the biggest surprise of the year because lokesh kanagaraj sir is having the best and biggest stars in his film not only that he knows to present his story with lots of action , mass scenes and atlast he keeps more suprising elements in his films. I think the most surprising film of the year would be thalapathy 67. As we have seen in vikram lokesh has reached out every artists maximum potential out them. The first half was fully seen through fahad fazils perspective and there was only 1 dialogue for kamal sir. As a vijay fan I would like to see the actor in vijay more. We've seen the actor in vijay only few times. Characters like rayappan and JD had given him a space as an actor to grow. And over the last decade most of the movies was only focused on Vijay's charcter and i believe this wont be the case with thalapathy 67. And more importantly this might be a boost for vijay to slowly shift from mass entertaining movies to more story based movies.

Hereafter We won't getting any template or tailor made films carrying 5 songs or typical commercial angle wil change from here on , Next wave of commercial cinema is will grow after T67.

Captain Miller: Reason being Arun is strong in film making techniques and Dhanush being strong in acting. A period film definitely needs both these qualities added with GV music which we ardently saw in title announcement. Captain Miller is gonna be a biggest surprise because:
1. Dhanush has never been in a period film except some part in Anegan and Asuran( Which is not period tho. The flashback scene im talking about)
2. Dhanush's recent films if we see the last 5 films... We can see that he is one a path where his graph is going on top... And it might go on with captain miller
3. Arun Matheswaran tho he is from Thiayagarajan Kumararaja school... He waits and writes the perfect and far fetched script and makes it to perfection.
If we see Rocky and Saani kaayidham these were very original films but rocky theatre la perusa Audience paakala... Saani kaayidham released in prime video but oore kondaduchu... I feel people's perspective towards films are changing and they are starting to celebrate original scripts and Arun never disappointed us... So Captain Miller is my choice.

I think maveeran will suprise us. Because Mandela is not just a political film the humour in that film is also worked out well. So maveeran will perfectly suit for Siva Karthikeyan's current image as an entertainer who trying to become a mass hero. And also I always have this thing that any film which put effort in their publicity designs or videos that film will have chance to be a good film. I really loved maveeran comic book style designs in their posters videos and the yellow red colour pattern in their designs. In that sense maveeran will definitely work out.
