- The crew of Star Trek Voyager that we grew to enjoy over the series is not the crew that Starfleet intended for one of the fastest vessels in the Federation.
But the Caretaker incident ruined a lot of plans that the crew had and put a 70,000 light year gap between them and home. What's more over a dozen were lost in the initial displacement.

Imagine the families of these people finding out that Voyager survived all those years and they were making contact with the crew, only to learn that their loved-ones were the handful of people who actually did die when everyone assumed they did.
We can at least be grateful Ayala, a guy who spoke only a handful of lines in four episodes yet appeared in more episodes than any other extra, survived the whole show's run.
Cavit died because he thought Brace for impact meant "Run across the bridge"

Though he was acting, McCoy ran across the bridge just to be flung away from its railing, onto the deck during the Kobayashi Maru battle.
I think he was trying to reach his position before.
He probably had this cool manouver he learned from surfing off bondi beach on earth, but didn't have time to explain it. But alas he was too slow. His last memory was that beach and his love sharing a laugh because he wiped out one time. He will never see her again...he wiped out one last time... Well have a good day everyone

Seriously, if you look at the episode, it looks like the actor is hamming up his performance to look like he can't make it to a brace position before the wave hits.

The death of Lt. Carey pissed me off. He was one of those recurring charactera you got to know a little & seemed all right. His death was abritary and they were so close to home.

IIRC, the writers (who paid so damned little attention to continuity) thought they'd killed him off years before, and then in response to fan inquiries, used him one last time just to kill him off.
That is terrible, but it makes sense. He probably should have died from B'Elanna decking him right after the merge. 😂

Tom Paris wasn't in prison for killing fellow cadets in an illegal maneuver. That was someone else, played by the same actor. Tom Paris was imprisoned for desertion and joining the Marquis.

That's close. He was discharged from Starfleet for killing three officers in a shuttle accident and trying to cover it up. Then he joined the Maquis, got caught and was jailed for treason.
This shuttle accident was likely a deliberate reference to Locarno's illegal maneuver.

Ferengis from ds9 play in tng . Several voyager and ds9 crew played in tng as other simuliar characters.
Had they played it right he would have Nicholas and Red Squadron would have been a group of fighters on Voyager.
@@shawn6860 You mean NOVA SQUADRON, Sans Crusher, Jaxa, and Albert, as Crusher went off with the traveler. Jaxa was killed in the TNG episode Lower Decks, and well Albert was the death that got Paris in all that mess at the academy.

Alternate timeline where T'Prena and Ceska have Spy vs Spy hijinks while *just* managing to keep their covers with the crew at large would be excellent.

I watched the tv show, “Jericho.” One of its characters, Mimi Clark, I knew that I had seen her on a previous shows. I looked her up and finally knew where have I seen her. Star Trek Voyager... Alicia Copolla is LT Veronica Stadi.
And "Lt Stadi" is apparently survived by her sister "Alicia" - nice touch.
Brilliant! I never gave more than a passing thought to the original crew, so it's good to find out more about them.
So your weird Vulcan rant got me thinking about a more in depth concept: could Vulcan choosing to smile around a mostly human crew be considered a logical mannerism? If she was a nurse then it meant she'd be regularly interacting with patients and a nice smile and some empathy, even if faked, could go a long way. Now obviously this is a bit too open minded for most stuck up Vulcans, who are frankly quite smug and quite douchey at the best of time and just bland and boring at the worst of times. Still, would an attempt at mimicking human psychology and behavior, even if deemed inferior, be illogical for a Vulcan doctor working around humans? If your job requires you to be a people person, being a constantly emotionally stunted prick would make your job less efficient. Thus it would be illogical to be that way.
Of course Vulcan logic as written is often quite illogical.
I think you've hit on a "fascinating" concept for a future character in a series. Most Vulcans in Starfleet tend to serve in more scientific or engineering capacities. So their personalities or lack thereof wouldn't necessarily inhibit them from working alongside non-Vulcans. But a Vulcan operating in a more personalized and intimate setting could be a real challenge for a typically repressive species. It definitely opens up possibilities for character development as well as the back-story of why a Vulcan would enter Starfleet medical as a physician or nurse.
@@saiyansomething73 Vulcans were cripplingly underutilized in the TNG era, possibly because writers didn't want to rethread Spock. Of there was Tuvok but VOY writing is just terrible for anyone not the Doctor or Seven of Nine.
Still, it stand to reason there is no logic is being emotionless if one has a profession which requires them to work with highly emotional people. Learning to read and understand them is still distinct from being ruled by them. It would require both mental fortitude but also a lot of inner balance for a Vulcan to work in such an environment which I suspect is, maybe, why we don't really see Vulcan Doctors and Nurses in Starfleet. The same reason we don't see Vulcan Councillors. It would be about as effective as having a Klingon for ship psychiatrist (just in a completely opposite direction).
I think logically they would figure out that faked emotions would have the opposite effect as intended. It
would be very difficult to fake emotions without it seeming off to the humans themselves.
Or what would a half vulcan half human, who was reared by the human parent for what ever reason, would behaved like.
Also if she had survived she would have been the logical mate for Vorik in Blood Fever not B'Elanna or maybe the random female vulcan maquis you see in season seven in the episode Repression, opps sorry getting off my soapbox now.
@@bobsomething4733 When Gene Roddenberry was creating Star Trek: Phase II, he created a new Vulcan character to replace Spock (as Leonard Nimoy did not want to reprise the role). This new Vulcan, named Xon, was a full-blooded Vulcan who would have had a character arc very similar to that of Data from TNG; he would try to understand humans by experimenting with human emotions and mannerisms. It would have been interesting if they had tried that idea again on Star Trek Enterprise; perhaps T'Pol wouldn't have been so grating for some people if she had have been like Xon.
it seems that promoting existing Starfleet officers rather than giving outlaws positions of command would make more sense and don't forget to factor in the surviving crew of the equinox
If you'd actually trust any of the Equinox crew (other than *maybe* Marla Gilmore) as senior officers, you're on glue.
Fun fact, the actress who played the Vulcan nurse, later played a Human Voyager crewmember in several episodes, as well as a Vulcan DS9 crewmember in "Bar association".
I noticed the actors that played the Executive and Chief Medical Officers were on TNG playing other characters. "The Inner Light" - Ressik Administrator and "The Hunted" - Roga Danar.
That idea of a Romulan sleeper agent (4:24) would have been a cool storyline!
They had a Cardassian sleeper agent which ties in better with the Maquis aspect and that was a whole thing as one of the few recurring villains on the show.

I thought the original officer at con was pretty cute. I would have liked to have seen more of her. The doctor and first officer seemed so dispassionate and cold, I didn't really miss them.

T'Prina wasn't part of Chakotay's crew.

I was really looking forward to having Stadi as a crew member. Still not over her death 24 years later! At least, it proves that Betazoids can be pretty good pilots so Deanna Troi can possibly be forgiven for crashing the Enterprise D
It actually means that she cant be forgiven. If she had the possibility of being a good pilot, then she was negligent. If betazoids were just inherently bad at piloting then she could be forgiven because she never had a chance.

Cavit also lived on Kamin for a while! He died from not knowing that “brace for impact” doesn’t mean “run across the room”. He seemed fairly old to be ‘just’ a Lt. Cmdr, perhaps down to his being judgemental?
Dr Fitzgerald was also an Angosian supersoldier from that TNG episode with Zefram Cochrane and his pornstache.

When Seven shows a casualty list in “Imperfection” some of those names are of Lt. Cmdrs and Cmdrs. Perhaps they’re meant to be the ‘canon’ names of the Doctor and Chief engineer?
I’d like to know more about the Maquis Vulcan woman from “Repression”, an episode set after it had been stated that other than Tuvok and Vorik there were no Vulcans on Voyager and after an episode where they said that other than Tuvok, Vorik, Jurot and the deceased Suder, there were no telepaths either...

The Angosian's name, if memory serves, was Roegar Daenar. He was pretty bad-ass, since not even the Enterprise D's security staff, including Worf, couldn't stop that guy.

I'd always thought Voyager's losses in Caretaker and the crew of Chakotay's ship were about even in number and were something like 30 or 40 people, nearly one-third of the ship's crew or so. That way it would explain why Voyager and Chakotay's crew needed one another to run the ship efficiently and why it could be plausible for people to fear a potential Maquis uprising down the road.

The _First Officer, Doctor, Betazed_ and _Vulcan_ could have made some very interesting characters. I wish that they could have been left in.

I'd love to see a version where all the surviving characters died and all the dead characters survived and see those new developing personalities and how they'd manage all the same encounters as Voyager. I imagine there'd be a lot less mercy for the Marquis under the Starfleet First Officer if he took over.

Let's not forget the loss of "Good" Janeway. That piece of Janeway died during that Caretaker wave, causing the being that was left to be an unstable lunatic who tortured her crew (mostly Harry Kim) for 7 long years till they escaped back to Earth.
Elaborate how Janeway is any more "unstable" than Picard or Kirk. I just watched the entire series in order after being a massive TNG fan for years, and now I think Voyager is my favorite because of how much more real the characters feel. Don't get me wrong, Picard and crew are all very nice and astute and poetic and all. But I think the Voyager crew strikes a good balance between idealistic and relate-able.
@@EingefrorenesEisen She changes history, eradicating many potential lives if you so want, just to save a few people (Endgame). She tortures people while accepting the risk of them dying - without showing remorse (as opposed to, I'd like to point out, Archer does after torturing) (Equinox). On the other hand she endangers her entire crew for the live of the one person she seems most fond of - Seven of Nine (the episodes where they hunt down a Borg ship to get some device for her).
I'd be the first in line if you argue that's just because her character was being badly written due to the VOY writer's constant clashing, but... that doesn't change how her character is depicted. I can imagine her being the maternal-leader-type character that is strong if necessary but able to consolidate those under her command - a trait Picard is lacking entirely. But with all her lapses she appears to be a psychologically quite unstable individual. Which would be understandable. But I don't think that the writers intended it to be that way, it's just what came out of the mess that writing VOY was.
If you just watched TNG and VOY to this date, then I warmly recommend DS9 to you based on the reason you liked VOY. DS9 started with having "proper" characters as opposed to TNG, i.e. having characters that are more relate-able than the all-perfect ones in TNG. VOY actually went a bit away from that again I feel... as with those perfect characters like Kim and Chakotay. Also DS9 has more side-characters, all of them quite relate-able.
@@EingefrorenesEisen She contradicts herself so many times it's sort of crazy, and she literally broke a temporal agent's mind so bad he tried to destroy her AND reality to get rid of her. When you drive someone who's job is to take care of you into wanting you dead, that seems a bit odd. Also, look up any video "Psycho Janeway". SF Debris has done a huge case study on incidents when she's gone f'n bonkers.
@@RimaNari You forgot that the aliens she threatened them with were the ones who wanted to kill them anyway, and were seeking vengeance on the equinox crew. They'd already violated several protocols at that point. Not that that means they ought to be executed, but it's not really "crazy" to believe that it's poetic justice for someone who commits genocide gets some bad karma. Should she have left the Borg alone, too? IMO you've got a double standard. Picard literally went way more mental than Janeway (did if you consider First Contact canon, which from my understanding it is) in the scene where he smashes the little ships and wants to hunt the Borg down like a bloodthirsty murderer.... Not that I blame him -- he suffered severe trauma and the borg are awful, but my point is, you can paint anyone as bad with your way of thinking.
Plenty of captains risk lives of their crew to save one member. It's literally one of the most common things in Trek. Happened with the Enterprise going back after Picard when he was assimilated. SHRUG.
Tbh, it sounds to me like you expect too much from Janeway that you let slide from others. Is it because it's "cool" to dislike her?
@@salenstormwing If you're gonna make an accusation like "contradicts herself so many times", at least provide evidence. She may have changed her mind a lot, but that's literally the opposite of contradicting. When you learn new insights, new angles, etc, you become more open to new ideas. People will bitch when Janeway's firm that she's "authoritarian", but when she's flexible she's "contradicting".
Also that "temporal agent" literally tried to kill her, from her perspective, before any of that? It's his own fault he got stranded in the 20th century.
I'll have to look up that video but tbh I doubt it's gonna be anything but cherry picked/cut scenes tha don't prove anything.

Probably happened off screen and with everything going on, bringing up dead crew members who no one outside of Kim and Janeway had any attachment to probably wasn't on anyone's minds.

The first officer, chief medical officer, and nurse I've always wondered if they were people who were cast to be Chakotay, the doctor, and tuvok, but it didn't work out, but they still got a minor role in the pilot

As a Voyager fan, I like the mixed crew and how they developed. There are a few story lines I would have liked to see a little different but overall I loved the series. I would have loved to see a Voyager movie though with the original crew getting back together for a trip back to the Delta Quadrant.

a bit of a correction ... while Nicholas "Nick" Locarno and tom Parris were played by the same actor they were not the same character
Tom crashed a shuttle he was piloting near Caldik Prime, killing three other Starfleet officers. Afraid he would lose his commission, Paris falsified records that would later reveal the cause of the accident as pilot error. His efforts to cover up the error succeeded, but overwhelmed by guilt and regret, he confessed. He was court-martialed for his actions and dishonorably discharged from Starfleet. This caused a major rift between Paris and his father.
Cadet First Class Nicholas "Nick" Locarno was the leader of Starfleet Academy's Nova Squadron in 2368. He was expelled from Starfleet Academy after causing the death of a fellow cadet and forcing those under him to cover up the accident.
I am shocked they never came across a Changeling. They told Odo he was one of many sent from the Founder's Homeworld to other parts of the galaxy. Then have a whole arc where the Borg try to assimilate a liquid being and keep failing so they hunt harder for Voyager.
The T'Prera discussion was worth the video.

I bought my son an encyclopedia of the original series Star Trek, w/op manual for the Enterprise. Was always impressed in how much detail the writers did of the characters' history. Have Pavel Andreievich Chekov (Walter Koenig) autograph on his bio, got it at one of their tours through our city. I'm a Trekkie from the '60's, still think, Voyager was Star Trek's best works. "Live long, and prosper."
There's a few Alternate Universe stories in the Star Trek EU where we get to see different Voyager crews. The Myriad Universes books have both a Voyager in a universe in which the cardassians never left Bajor and so the Voyager never got transported to the Delta Quadrent, as well as one where the Voyager got so badly damaged by Species 8472, they got stuck permanently in the DQ and ended up helping form a new regional power called the Delta Coalition
The writers definitely should have kept T'Prena. A medical facility with one doctor and no trained nurses is too far fetched even if that doctor doesn't require sleep. Having Paris and Kes function as nurses with scant training was silly, and it would have made for a potential plot point to have her as a Romulan spy, who kept her cover after Seska was revealed.
They should have kept Stadi. She was great!
I'm currently listening to the audiobook Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway (totally loving it, btw), and it's interesting when she gets into some detail on this subject. Especially that the original CMO was a close friend of hers who she served with previously.

I love how navigating the asteroid belt in reality takes the form of a mostly straight trajectory.
Yes the asteriod belts depicted in scifi shows are orders of magnitude of orders of magnitude more densly packed than anything in reality.
Although travelling at light speed would make it trickier to miss things particularly on the way out from Mars where you are likely to come across asteroids pretty quickly.

Lt. Stadi was an expert in navigating the Asteroid Belt. So she basically just plotted a course from A to B and turned the autopilot on.
I liked the casting of Stadi. She reminded me a lot of Troi, shame she died right away
They really need to stop routing deadly conduits through their control panels. I hear Zefram Cochrane's original design called for just a few sticks of dynamite behind each panel.

What with so many senior officers _and_ the entire medical staff dying, I'm surprised to learn only 13 of the 141 died. I always got the impression from that episode that they'd lost a much larger portion of the crew. And Veronica is a weird name for a Betazoid.

There's so many English or American parents who'll choose, say, a Hindi name that it seems entirely reasonable a Betazoid might go "'Veronica' is a lovely name! Woo Hew-mon names! It's either that or 'Mildred', so exotic!".

In all these years I haven't felt the need to think what might have happened with the original crew that died, but now thanks to you I really want to know more about that vulcan nuse. she was was a nurse which is generally a caring role so i'm going with she was unusually emotive for a Vulcan and chose a job here she could hide that, and pass of her emotions as just doing her job well.
I really like the idea of her being a Romulan Tal Shiar agent who was sent to spy on Starfleet. Would have made for a great plot development!

Certifiably Ingame: I really don't care too much for the characters you mentioned. I like it the way it played out.
Alternate history, would be a good movie.
I always thought it was a missed story opportunity that Voyager never ran into an alternate universe with an alternate crew that survived, exploring how circumstances can shape events and relationships.
(I once even wrote synopses of a fantasy season 8 where that happens in one of the episodes)
Voyage of Terran ISS Vyoager in delta quadrant will be good oportunity too.
