It's amazing how badly CA have dropped the ball on this. They had the warhammer community, a living pile of money who are used to being treated like dirt and managed to lose their confidence. It's not just greed, it's incredible stupidity.

to be fair... this amount of resistance to being parted with money is very strange for the Warhammer Community, they probably never saw it coming.
A fanbase normally willing to part with £55 for a single Mutalith, £32.50 for 10 Tzaangors, £30 for a single Cockatrice, £30 for the Blue Scribes, and £22.50 for the Changeling itself suddenly refuses to part with £20 for the Changeling *and* the Blue Scribes *and* several Mutaliths *and* several groups of Tzaangors (far more than 10 in a unit) *and* several Cockatrices. and that's not even considering the 2 extra factions.
if GW themselves had tried pulling this people would probably be throwing out £100+ for this stuff.
I've seen some people pointing out that worries over greed isn't even why people aren't buying. people are used to greed. they buy at greedy prices all the time. they buy from GW. they buy from EA and Ubisoft. but that's because we know those companies are greedy, we expect greed from them.
it's a problem from CA because CA used to be cheaper, people have relatively recent memory of CA not being greedy, and then they suddenly rose the prices to have a tiny fraction of the greed surrounding everything else, it was far too sudden so it got called out and rejected.
if there'd been a more gradual shift, if the days of £8 Lord Packs were 5-6 years away instead of only just over 2, I doubt the community would have had even a tiny fraction of this outrage.

@@johnhamilton6768 I honestly see absolutely no problem with the price, I gauge if something is worth the money by seeing if I get an hour s worth of content for one Euro, so If a game retails at 60 Euro I'd like to play it for a minimum of 60 hours.
Since I can comfortably spend 20h+ on one of the THREE lord's that would put the value of the dlc to less then 50 cents for an hour of fun..... Wich to me seems like a fair deal

Heard about your review on Legend's most recent stream and needed to check it out. Thanks for taking the time to make this scathing review and for being brutally honest on behalf of the Total War community. I hope CA will listen and do better, but at this point we're all so jaded aren't we? Take the $25 I would have spent on this half-assed DLC because I'd say you've put more heart into this video than CA is putting into treating their fans well.

All three upcoming DLC together are going to cost more than the base game for significantly less content.
I make 38$/hr and when I saw the sale and clicked open the Ad just to check the price and saw 35$ (Canadian) I was like Yeaaaah hard pass.
I'll be honest, if it was 25$ Canadian, I'd have probably grabbed it, but jesus christ it's almost a full priced game at 35$.

So that everyone understands what happening at CA : The main dev team that created the warhammer games, is working on a multiplayer arena shooter called "Hyenas". Only a handful of devs are working on TWW3 now. Literally a single dev on bug fixes, and he's got other responsibilities too.

Wait no shot this is actually what’s happening. I was wondering what happened to the DLCs after we got bangers like vampire coast, tomb kings, the wood elf and beastmen reworks. Those were so cool and unique and we haven’t got anything like them since, I thought they were using a different studio or something not essentially removed all the people who made those bangers

Each person has likely payed hundreds of dollars for these games and expansions, hundreds of thousands have likely paid this much, Shutting it down like they threaten will end them.. I dare them.

Had the price rocketed up at some point and then dropped due to lack of actual profitability then yes you’d be correct. Has not been the case here though. They're probably worried that people will have a hard time adjusting to the new stats and will make mistakes which frustrates them and thurns them away. And as mentioned above, it requires effort.

I agree with this message so much that I want to give you money because of it. Honestly, so many of the points you’ve made can be applied to so many major gaming studios right now. It shouldn’t be too much to ask to just have, you know, good content that works and doesn’t bankrupt you.

You, Sir, have earnt a subscription. I agree 110%, especially in regards to impact of cost of living and how insane CA are to pick *now* as the right time to raise prices.
As a side-note, the part about playing all night to avoid going to bed resonates big time: I used to avoid sleeping until the last possible moment, because my panic disorder was so bad I'd literally fear dying in my sleep. TW: Warhammer was one of the ways I coped, and seeing it turned into what it is today is terrible.
I'll only buy this if it's 75% off, which means never--because CA will never discount it that much, not if their new greedy ethics remain in play. This franchise is "dead" to me. And I'm their cash cow, fanboy audience. It's such a shame that they went the way of EA, Blizzard, etc. They haven't fixed a damn thing in months . They deserve to eat their hats on this one.
Lets put this into perspective.
Back when dlc was 8 pounds as he said lets say 75% of players were buying it for that price. lets take this out of 100 to make this simple. 75 multiplied by 8 equals 600 in total. Remember that 600.
Now the price is 20 pounds. Now they are getting maybe 25 of that 100. 25 multiplied by 20 equals 500.
Most of the rest of the player base might now buy the dlc for a discounted price lets say they discount it down to the 8 pounds again, 50 multiplied by 8 equals 400.
Now add the 500 and 400 to get 900. So the same number of people buying the product now earns thirty percent more money.
600 for one low price that most of the fans are happy to pay, OR 900 and they have to deal with angry comments.
THAT is why they are doing it, pure greed. They don't care about their loyal customers and only care about squeezing every cent they can out of the fans.
Just wanted to add. For the people that make the argument that it's still "a lot of time for that money". But you shouldn't look at it like "price per time" but "price per content". By design Warhammer is made to take a long time. But just because, compared to other titles like the Resident Evil games or Detroit Become human, you can get more time out of it, that itself doesn't justify this price. If that was the deciding factor then any game with replay value or a long gameplay loop would cost more, but they don't.
Even within CA's internal pricing this decision doesn't make sense, even if they account for inflation. It's almost half the price of the base game for nowhere near half the content. Chaos dwarfs were SOMEWHAT understandable, not even them but it was bearable, but this is ridiculous.
Everyone always treats the campaign as a purely single player experience… I primarily play with my friend group, so campaign balance is still very important to me/us.

If a game is designed with multiplayer campaigns in mind, it should also be balanced with multiplayer campaigns in mind…
The vast majority of TWH3 players are playing immortal empires, solo. The story campaign, the MP campaign, the MP battles, all that stuff is great for the 5% who do it, but if the value isn't there for the core customer then there's no money to support those other things.
Anything that makes SP Immortal Empires less compelling is either a mistake or mistake-adjacent.

Which many streamers do. I watch and partake in a large number of multiplayer games. You can just see the number of lobbies open.
The idea that you wouldn’t balance all aspects of your game is just dumb. Why would you include game modes if you weren’t intending on balancing/supporting them? Brain dead…

Most of the time whenever I hear from the company about how people are harassing the devs... I honestly feel like its people actually harassing the suits and they are just saying that people are harassing the staff and devs so they can stop getting hated on.
Its typically always a tactic they do to get pity or some shit to make the hate go away or to turn the community against itself by making people hate one another regardless of whether they are actually saying anything against the devs.
Mind you, the only time I've seen a whole community turn fully against the corporate fucks was in the Devil May Cry series. Literally turned its community against it entirely overnight.
Yeah, I agree with you here. I won't buy the DLC until the price hopefully changes. I really want to use the awesome giant Wendigos, but not enough to pay $25 for the worst DLC in terms of price to content ratio.
"PREMIUM DLC" nuff said after the last few weeks of this shitstorm, its speak volumes how hard CA has fallen.
So we waited over a year to pay 40% of the base price for a re-skinned cauldron, a re-skinned dragon, and a lord that copy pastes assets that already exist in the game.
*So CA, you have chosen, death.*
Also all other units are reskins too, so nothing new here and not that amount of work, and they dont even wanted to give just more reskins like tzengors with for example great weapons, who cares i guess? XDD theres should be atleast 20 units, even if they are just gonna be reskins like those lions, for me its still better than just only disgusting 3-4 units per faction, LMAO.
I'm just glad that Larian had come out and set an example for how things should be done with Baldur's Gate 3. You're right about the disjointed psycho shareholders. Unfortunately, good companies are exceptions pretty much in every industry nowadays.

The most disapointing thing is that CA kept the trend of "this dlc character is the coolest, most unique, badass character in the game, oh and theres the other guy" but did it with 2 lords, i wouldnt even be that upset if all 3 were the most op, fun lords in the game, but CA decided to make the changling dlc with cathay and kislev as after thoughts

They're just funneling the money into Hyenas and Pharaoh, both of which are dead-on-arrival.

As a example right now with the steam strategy sale going on till the 4th of September you can get the Homeworld Remastered Collection and the Homeworld Deserts of Kharak Deluxe Editions for the same price as this DLC.
It only just occurred to me that the way Total War is being developed, is almost like as if it were a MOBA selling new heroes/champions, which is really depressing.
The main thing i wanna see is to be able to customize more Lords, like when we give them a weapon it actually changes the weapon they use, just cosmeticly of course(you still get the buffs and such), but i love that mechanic, customisable lords would be an amazing update

Honestly the generous and passionate support we had in TWW2 feels a distant memory, the price is up and the contents down, FLC is far stingier and they're handing out barely any patches

From faction pacs... Champions of Chaos is probably the best, Vampire Coast is also cool and very unique
For the lord packs, Prophet and Warlock; Grim and Grave; Twisted and Twilight are really good. Lot of people also rate Silence and Fury pretty highly. And of course, the new one is really fun.

Total war takes such a hardcore computer to run well. I think increasing the wealth gap more for this game is a mistake for online game play.
yeah my friends had to refund the game because they couldn't run it with decent pcs so i've just been stuck playing it on my own
Game is a pile shit optimization wise. I have a 3080 can run Baldur's Gate III and most other new triple AAA titles at high settings with no problems. This game crashes every 20 mins or so
@@camd9886 Baldur's Gate 3 doesn't also have thousands of units and is also isometric, I'm a game dev and any isometric game will run better than 3rd person. And most triple-a-games are poor ports.
I have a top tier processor, but a bit weaker graphics card... It runs so bad though. I have games more intense running fine at 60. So I have great ram, a great processor... Is 8 gb of VRAM on my gfx not enough? The game even recommends ultra settings and then... Well...
@@wasa4616 You're right about 3D vs isometric, that wasn't intended as a direct comparison. I moreso was trying to say, most contemporary games on PC that are triple AAA regardless of whether they are ports or not run way better then this game on my hardware and it's very noticeable that this game crashes like crazy.
Do you think that I'm wrong about this game being poorly optimized? What would you consider an adequate comparison on PC? Bannerlord, other Total War games? All run way better then this one imo.
But as to the actual DLC and the price, before these kind of DLC's cost me half an hour of my life and gave me maybe 100 hours of entertainment. This will cost an entire hour and honestly none of these factions are ones I enjoy, so max this will get me 30 hours while I try to make Cathay feel less blah. If the math for you personally shakes out differently by all means buy it, but for me this just isn't valuable enough to justify.
This is perhaps a weird way to feel, but I wouldn't mind the $25 cost if they didn't lock units behind it.
CA is insane, amazing IP and game with a extremely loyal fan base that any other developer would kill for.
Love how you mentioned the game has been what you turned to in difficult times. Everybody has up's and down's, and all of us die hard fans of this game have inevitably had one point whether we played the game for hours on end to seek shelter from life's difficulties. Greeding the game into the grave means it won't be there for my next tough time, and that's why I wish CA would've treated us fairly.

About five years ago I’d say I saw Rome total war on the App Store. I’ve always wanted to play an rts but I didn’t have a pc so Rome was introduction to the entire genre. I absolutely loved despite never getting fat and I wanted more. After a couple years of saving I got a pc this may and the first game I got was Warhammer lll. Your videos were a big help starting the game along with Zerkovich and Cody and it just pains see CA destroy it.

Good rant. One tiny correction, you mentioned the financial statements and said statements reveal that CA haven't paid dividends in 2022 or 2021. But that just means the suits are getting more and shareholders aren't.

1:48 I have 1000s of combined hours in this trilogy. I constantly replay the same campaigns. Skaven, Dwarves, Lizardmen, and Skarsnik(I'm not much of a fan of other greenskin factions, I just like gobbos). I could easily do an opening strategy for most of these factions Legendary Lords just from memory. The randomness of what factions succeed and fail, and the vastness of the map keep future playthroughs fresh.
Ikit for instance. I almost always take the lands from the beastmen 1st. But then I might push up to Bretonia 1 game. I might push towards the Dwarves in another. I have even just sailed for Lustria and made friends with Skrolk before and just ignored everything near Skavenblight. The possibilities for the mid and end game is near limitless.

But I’ll just wait to get the dlc for Pennie’s in a year. I got almost all the tw2 dlc from steam key resellers for 25% of the price. I was late to the party for sure but what ever.
Honestly expected them to at the very least give Celestial General a stone lion mount as an option. Would've been +100 for coolness faxtoe alonw at least. And would make him more devastating in melee. But nah.

Man, when you said that Warhammer 2 helped you in a really dark time that made me sad, Im not even the biggest Warhammer fan I much prefer History but damn... And its really sad that this will most likely be the end of Total War, CA has already moved most of its Development towards "Hyenas" which will obviously flop but still kill Total War most likely. Even if there where to be new Total Wars, after all this? I don't know man.... Its just really fucking sad to see Total War and CA going into this direction, I grew up with Total War and was always excited for new possible Total Wars like a Pike&Shot Era Total War or of course the classic, ever elusive, Medieval 3. I agree with all of your points. I could forgive the DLC being over priced, it will eventually go on sale, but between crashes and bugs the game itself is not worth investing in right now.
If shadow of change is discounted under 8-10 dollar, i might buy it not before. There are other campaigns i have not played yet.
I dont actually think that they are threatening to kill TWH3 and yeah thats a hill im going to die on. Warhammer is the biggest cash cow CA ever had and they are not going to kill it over one drama and a bad DLC
I already bought it but wish I hadnt. Unfortunately in the uk with games planet i was able to get it for £15 which was low enough for me but now i wish id just said nah
It is indeed a very good point you made. The gaming market is enormous. My time is very limited. There are far more games I want to play than there is time for me to play them all.
If CA starts to go the way of the other big greedy publishers / game dev executives, then they can be replaced in the blink of an eye.

The biggest problem that I don’t hear people mention often especially with companies like CA and Bethesda is how heavily they just rely on modders. They don’t outright say it obviously but why two days after a release of a DLC or game can some guy not getting paid doing it a few hours a day can release a mod that fixes glitches, adds units or characters, even whole new factions like if anyone hasn’t seen it look at OVN lost factions which yes I understand is a full team but they are a small one and doing it with passion while CA has teams of dozens of people. And then they have the balls to raise the price and tell everyone that well they had to it’s the way of the world.

As someone who’s hours in WH3 have gone down from playing other games, I won’t be changing that anytime soon. I usually enjoy modding the game too because the fan base can make better decisions and better content than CA themselves. I do hope the gaming companies will take notes from Larian Studios, FromSoft, and all of these are respectable companies and release content that we can both enjoy and a price we can respect.
Tzeench is the faction a am least excited about. After the Chorfs I was hoping Kislev and Cathay get the love and content they need.
Tzeentch really was in a good place on his own imo. Cathay and Kislev were the ones who felt barren, and frankly, these new units are not too exciting.

Just saw the Shadows of Change ad on Steam, and saw there was a sale, I thought maybe the whole community backlash might've done something.
Clicked it to see it, and in Canada it's 35$, on sale for 30$. Chaos Dwarves is 21$ by comparison.
I mean, I knew the price went up, but for Canadians it went up 14$ where as for Americans it was 10$. I had kind of thought it would have been adjusted for Currency already so it was even more jarring to see 35$ after hearing "25 is too much" all month.

Great review but I have slightly different predictions for what CA will do. I think they will keep the price the same but push the DLC team to add a bit more content to try and justify it. TWW3 is the only game actively making them money rn so I really don't think they will ever shelve it. However by pushing the already small team to make more content in the same timeframe will likely make the problems with bugs worse as no one has any time to fix them and CA won't hire a maintenance team.
I wouldn't be surprised if they make a Total War: Warhammer 4.
Lets put this into perspective.
Back when dlc was 8 pounds as he said lets say 75% of players were buying it for that price. lets take this out of 100 to make this simple. 75 multiplied by 8 equals 600 in total. Remember that 600.
Now the price is 20 pounds. Now they are getting maybe 25 of that 100. 25 multiplied by 20 equals 500.
Most of the rest of the player base, simplified to say 50%, might now buy the dlc for a discounted price lets say they discount it down to the 8 pounds again, 50 multiplied by 8 equals 400.
Now add the 500 and 400 to get 900. So the same number of people buying the product now earns thirty percent more money.
600 for one low price that most of the fans are happy to pay, OR 900 and they have to deal with angry comments.
THAT is why they are doing it, pure greed. They don't care about their loyal customers and only care about squeezing every cent they can out of the fans.

I think what he meant by "play the same campaign" is the non-immortal empires campaigns. He wasn't on IE when he said that, and in that sense he's right; most people play a 'campaign' maybe once then it's IE forever

Crazy to think that just over 2 years ago (in July of 2021) we got 2 Lords, and a Free one regardless; and it was $10 USD. Now it's $25, and the free one was rolled into the DLC...
Damn...ders.. It's both fascinating and scary where CA goes from here.. Scary for the potentially abandoned potential of WH3, and fascinating if there will be some actual change form corps.
I'm really excited for the new Warhammer content...
