  • Recent adventure up through Caliente toward Lake Isabella trying to head to over Piute Mtn Road we ran into some snow that stopped us in our tracks. I ended up having to pull out the Maxtraxs recovery boards and a shovel to get us out. Even though in the video it looked like a mess I was confident we would get out!

I've considered investing in a set of these. This has just convinced me. I once got stuck in the desert back in the 90s before these existed. I shoved everything under my tires trying to get out, including a sweater and a gun case. Destroyed the stuff I stuffed in there, and still was stuck there in the middle of nowhere with my late (and very pregnant) wife totally dependent on me to get us out. Luckily a passer by in a Jeep with a winch pulled us out. I remember thinking, 'they should invent something for a situation like this '... I was onto something and didn't even know it. Great video, Duane. And a simple way to show how well they work!

Yeah those things are great - you have to get it UNDER your tire for them to be effective BUT they work pretty good. Had I not had them I would have been screwed. I wish I had a winch on my truck for sadly there isn't a good way to install them (no winch bumpers for this model). I should probably invest in a come along for a framer jack if I have to pull myself out. I typically keep all of my recovery gear in the truck - I've already pulled out a couple of people who got themselves in a pickle.

    Love the truck!

Thanks man me too! I will be putting new tires in soon which might help. I aired down after I got stuck the first time and that got me a little farther.

Well that caused a bit of extra exercise. Nice job. I see I'm still subbed to you. I haven't seen you in a long time👍🏻👍🏻10

Yeah I haven't been making videos as much as I would like. It really really great to get out there AND to have someone that was taking video - I didn't realize she captured as much as she did so it made it easy to piece something together.

Ah wintertime. Makes me feel like Michigan in winter, like now outside….

The crazy part is I had to drive over an hour and then up a steep dirt road up to almost 7000 to get to that snow. That’s my way of saying I rarely get to see let alone drive in snow.

@@dustyroaddestinations I am only about 20 feet above Lake Michigan here at home. The whole state doesn’t get that high. The entire state is only 1400 feet from the lowest place to the highest….

California has some pretty drastic extremes. I think we have the lowest and highest points in the United States. I’m personally in the desert and that is extreme in itself

In my truck and my work truck I have 5 gallon buckets of gravel. first they give ballistic to help with traction then if I do get stuck lay out the gravel to get out of the mud, should work with snow to

Hey bud. Cables, Winch, and Snorkel. Make Winch receiver front and back .

Man I hear you and honestly a winch was pretty high on the list... that was until I realized GMC from 20-22 changed the front end of the Canyon and NO ONE makes a winch bumper. I keep hoping that something comes out but so far no joy. I did just recently change tires to the BFGoodrich KO2 - not sure if that would have helped on that ice but maybe.

Make your own, welding corse over a weekend you made one. Make a stiff cardboard template. Then transfer pieces to metal , learn the torch to cut 15min and join your pieces by tack weld . See If it fits weld one inch at a time ,to prevent warp. You might even end up getting a portable one/generator.

You know that is something I’ve always (well maybe not always) wanted to learn how to do. I remember my dad welding back when I was a kid. Time for CZcams University!

    • @dustyroaddestinations

And I lowered the tire pressure. That’s what got me farther up. I got stuck lower down the hill until I did that.

@@dustyroaddestinations That's cool, it just seemed on video to be engaged.

    • @dustyroaddestinations

I was in 4 low and it automatically turns off traction control and stabilitrac - when I’m in 4H i mash the button (for 10 seconds) to turn it all off. I suppose I could have moved back into 4H and forgot BUT I know how it feels when those “features” kick on…. I appreciate the suggestion though because I think most people don’t understand how in these situations it just doesn’t help you…
