Please note that this is the international version of Super Mario Bros. 2, a modification of the game Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic (夢工場 ドキドキパニック) released on Famicom Disk System in 1987. The original japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 was later released renamed as Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels.
Unfortunately we haven't been able to include Satellaview version of this game due to the impossibility to get the original audio tracks. This version was based on Super Mario All-Stars released in Super Nintendo.
Regarding other Virtual Console releases on Nintendo's consoles, they have been excluded in this comparison as they are emulation of versions already present in this video.

I never realized that the gameboy advance version had so much extra stuff in it.
Its a really obnoxious experience with all those voices in it
its because it was ADVANCED ok I’ll stop
Me neither! I'm going to stream it soon on my channel
Yea the voices did seem a bit annoying but the extra stuff was really cool especially once u played the original a million times
@@tyronegaskins3559 I actually liked hearing the character voices. That’s what makes it my favorite version, otherwise it’s bland.
It’s always been so weird to think that shy guys weren’t originally a Mario enemy.
i always felt like birdo was a bad fit for nintendo/mario and this explains why haha the game it actually came from looks disturbing as hell. : (
@@roastytoasty8559 what do you mean it doesn't look disturbing
Shy guys originally were enemies of southern blacks.
Yup, or Bob-ombs, Snifits, Pokeys, Ninjis, and Birdo.
@@jacksnorty5622 ever science yoshis island i thought they were some kind of natural inhabitants of the island like tribes people or something. they always gave me an unsettling feeling haha. shy guys.... do you know about birdo as well?... : (
I’m glad that they turned Doki Doki Panic into Super Mario Bros 2. If they hadn’t who knows where the Mario series would be, also Doki Doki Panic wouldn’t be as well remembered. I’m glad things turned out the way they did.
After learning about the history and circumstances about the game creation , I consider Doki Doki Panic a Mario game in development and released early for a special event/holiday. It had all the mario designers, composers, etc. So technically not released as a Mario game originally, I get the impression that it was always supposed to be.
glad
Plus the music would be forgotten
That, plus we probably never would have heard of doki doki panic. I think it was a win win situation.
@Scott T Yeah, The Lost Levels is bullshit lmao
Fun Fact: Super Mario Bros 2 (the International Version of Doki doki Panic), was re-released in Japan as Super Mario USA.
Yep, that's correct.
So in Japan, they get the best of both worlds (Doki Doki Panic & Super Mario USA).
Also, did you know that what most people know as Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels (or Super Mario Bros for Super Players in Game Boy Color's Super Mario Bros Deluxe) in most parts of the world is known as Super Mario Bros 2 in Japan?
Of course, there are some differences here & there to make the game easier to people outside Japan.
Everyone knows

Doki Doki Panic started out as a Nintendo prototype that wasn't working out. It was dusted off and made "more like a Mario game" for a collaboration with Fuji TV on the FDS before being adapted back as an actual Mario game
Sassy Dog, I think you broke Carter.
It's funny how doky doky pannic had many elements of mario before it got considered to be a Mario game, like the coins, the plants and clouds climbing system, the star, the pow box.
because Miyamoto developed Doki Doki Panic. That's why he moved everything to Mario's World

The Super Nintendo version is the most visually pleasing
And sonically
By far.
Really? I thought the GBA version was cuter.
@@luisreyes1963 GBA version is the same, just way lower quality
GBA version looks better on an actual GBA screen. On an emulator the colors end up being too bright.
Good lord that waterfall in Doki Doki is seizure inducing.
@it's jesse It seemed faster. Oh well.
The GBA advance version would probably be the best. To me, what holds it back is the constant "Ya! Ha!" with every action performed by the character (minus the jumps).
It's not so annoying coming from headphones, good speakers, or an original GBA speaker. I actually don't mind it. It's my favourite version, but definitely easier than the original until you unlock the extra challenge and have to go through all 20 levels searching for Yoshi eggs.
Looking at the fact that the colors are less vibrant and the sound chip aren't as good as the SNES ones, the Super Nintendo wins
@@AdrianGomez-vz2gy it should be tweakable on an emulator but I also prefer the snes in general
gba advance?
game boy advance advance?
@@poble smh my head
I can't believe the snes version only came 5 years after the original. As a kid I saw this as a new version of a EXTREMELY OLD game... Now that I am 36, 5 years seem nothing.
When we're kids, 5 years is a lot. As adults, it's nothing 😂! Just more 5 years to the many we have lived
Also, technology evolved só fast back then... Look at this comparison
Kinda interesting how the SNES sounds are a mix between Mario World and the NES Doki Doki Panic sounds
@it's jesse Yeah maybe. It was mainly the enemy kill sounds where I was noticing it. They were quite harsh in DDP compared to SMB2
It took this video to make me realize how weird it is that Doki Doki Panic had a POW block in it, given that was originally from the original Mario Bros (pre-Super Mario Bros).
Also: GBA version is all like “we have per-sprite rotation and we’re damned well gonna USE it!”
... and Birdo has voice acting? What
From the beginning, Yumi Kojo: Doki Doki Panic was designed to be "a new Mario game" even though it wasn't intended to be an actual Mario game. When the original SMB2 was play-tested in America, it was considered to be too difficult, too graphically similar to SMB, and it would have to be converted to cartridge format from the disk system format. Nintendo decided to modify Doki Doki Panic to a Mario game, as again, development of DFDDP was with the mindset of making it a new type of Super Mario game. Nintendo could do this, because aside from the Fuji TV characters, the entire game was Nintendo's creation.
You might want to look up some videos by GTV on the topic. The original Yume Kojo Doki Doki Panic was created as a collaboration between Nintendo, and Fuji TV for a festival in Japan, for the purpose of getting youth of that time interested in technology, knowing that youth would grow up to be the adults of today.
Belive it or not. Even if Mario 2 is not an "original" game, it still one of my favorites.
Watching the Game Boy Advance version felt like a feverdream! But I really like it! I love the big enemies and voice acting!
Fun fact: Doki Doki Panic’s sound effects are an effective method of torture.
Extra fun fact: Doki Doki Panic started out as a SMB2 prototype, before Nintendo got Fuji TV commission. The game project got redone back in-house as Super Mario Bros 2/Super Mario Bros USA.
@@memeplayer1923 Fake
Am I the only one who likes them?
As an aspie person i try to not suffer with these and low down the volume. At least In SMB2 they are more subdued.
I think the extremely overdubbed Mario in the Advanced version is way worse.
I would love to see a new Mario game in the aesthetics of the SMB 2. Most games are in the 3D realm of Mario 64. And yes, we've seen the side scrolling games as well. But none have really brought back the "Doki Doki Panic" / Super Mario Bros 2 formula.
I’m just in love with the NES version.
Got it the day it was released (1989 in France) when I was 4. I enjoyed it so much. I was playing the levels, my parents often played the slot machine instead of me. We loved it.
Fanny how Mario has played a part in the lives of families all around the world for generations at this point
In Doki Doki Panic, the characters were mascots of Fuji TV’s Summer 1987 Dream Factory event. Luigi jumps higher than Imajin’s Mama. Wart (Mamuu) has a time and a half as much health in Super Mario Bros. 2 as he would in Doki Doki Panic. According to Doki Doki Panic’s instruction manual, the reason why World 7 has only two stages, as opposed to the usual three, is that the twins Piki and Poki accidentally ripped the story’s ending out of the book as they had a fight over who gets to turn the page.
I knew about pulling out the page and all but OH MY GOD I never thought about it that way, that 7-3 WAS that page. That's so mindblowing.
Fun Fact: Super Mario Advanced was a Response to Super Mario Bros Deluxe. This is why the screen starts off with a Bright box and a Dark Border.
Exactly this. As the first Mario game specifically for the GBA, they were really keen to show how much bigger* the new machine's screen was compared to the GBC. (*relatively of course, lol.)
I played the NES version a lot growing up and never understood why people now dismiss this game because people now know it's origin. I really liked the GBA version as well. Of the 4 Mario Advance titles, it's the only true remake that they did (added bosses, backgrounds, point combos etc.). The others, more or less, took the All-Stars versions and added voices (YI: SMA3 added bonus levels and SMA4: SMB3 did get those e-Reader levels though).
Yeah... The only one which didn't add much was SMA2... But honestly, it's Super Mario World. You can't really improve that game that much. It's perfect
If Doki Doki Panic were in SNES style, the characters would be colored as they would on the box art, which is a bit different. The grass patches would be green. The lamp would be gold. The Ganguro heads would be purple and the lips pink, particularly to avoid the stereotypical blackface.
Nice way of seeing things
I remember playing the nes version and one time when defeating the flying bird face, the bird opened up and made Mario get stuck in the floor. Had to reset the game
So is this why all the 2000s kids kept saying "lucky?"
What do you mean?
@@stripedrajang3571 Napoleon Dynamite reference.
The GBA version is my favourite. I don't find the chattering annoying, and it overall offers a more polished experience. That said, I find it a bit easy apart from the Yoshi Challenge unlocked after beating the game once. The NES and Super NES versions offer more of a challenge from the get-go.
The Game Boy advance is oneof in my opion WORSE nintendo creation ever even the screen is too
and he actually did it... what to expect from youtubers...
Uh?
youtube
What, what did he do pro??🥺
there are just 4 or 5 releases (counting yk:ddp)
so it's really not worth it.
This is my first time ever seeing Doku Doku Panic in action. It's so weird that this game was ever made into a Mario game.
"step right up...if you wanna get...toasted!"
God I love this game - such an underrated classic.
I think this was the first Mario game I ever played as a kid lol so for me, it holds a special place in my heart
So they only changed a few sprites and obviously the sound effects for the most part. Interesting. I always thought they had changed more but SMB2 looks like your average rom hack now.
There were some other significant changes. For one, the plot between the two games is completely different even though the villains are the same. In SMB2, meanwhile, you fight Mouser once less since he's replaced by Clawgrip in World 5-3, and you don't need to beat every level with all four characters to see the game's ending. I think SMB2 got some bug fixes, as well, and other small tweaks, although its translation in the end cast list was botched until the GBA release.
@@reillywalker195 the story was always superficial anyway so to me that's a pretty inconsequential change. Honestly SMB2 feels like an improvement overall.
There’s 1 big difference between the 8 and 16 but versions. The difficulty in the old games is a nightmare, it really feels like one of those unfair NES games like Contra. The 16 bit versions are much, much easier.
The oeverworld theme was extended a bit as well
I’d say the biggest difference besides no longer having to beat the game with every character is that Doki Doki lacks a run button.
So glad i found your channel!! I love content like this!! Looking forward to future videos
The snes and gba version is beautiful
Fun Fact: Koji Kondo composed DokiDoki Panic's Music.
even though we know it was a copy and paste for the USA, the Mario bros 2 soundtrack is iconic by adding more musical content
I like the advance one because we can hear the characters voices like mario
Agreed. Got the GBA version and the SNES versions myself.
That's the main reason I _don't_ like that version. (Second reason is the abysmal sound quality of the GBA).
CHOOSE A FLAYER
Arrangements do change too.
Like the additions in the Overworld theme, at least 2 bass notes were merged.
Additional of drums in boss (possibly a SMBSS reference?), and when you grab the ball.
And the additional whistling in the lose a life theme, similar to the SMB1 one. Note that Doki Doki Panic had the DCPM, which might be reminiscent.
There are more arrangement that changed, but they are still good.
One of the greatest soundtracks in all video game history
Love the look of the All Stars games.
ドキドキパニックを知っていたとは、そしてそれを最初にもっていく手法はナイスですね
@Family Pe The game which has come out first. It's also a prototype of super Mario 2.
Actually surprised that they never came up with a plan for the beginning because at the end it was just a dream

Thanks to this wise decisión to turn DDP in SMB2 (or SMBUSA), we got the grabbing Mechanics, Luigi’s skill to run slower but jump higher (this is also true in the original SMB2 or SMBTLL), Peach floaty jump, and a lot of her moveset references this game.
Also we have the Bob-Ombs, Shy Guys, Snifits, Pokeys, Birdo, Phanto (as the sun in SMB3), sparky as Mario characters.
BTW in my opinion SMB2>>>SMBTLL.
Loved this game so much.
I wont lie, it actually feels good to see the original game version, makes me like Mario 2 much more
I've always liked the game. Never knew it was on gba, but I definitely like that they added more content and dialogue to it.
I can't decide, i really like tgem all
If you could just get the resolution, colors, and audio from the Super Nintendo version, but combine it with all the extras from the GBA version, then reduce the occurrence of voices by about 50% - I think you'd have the ideal version of this game.
The debut of the legendary Birdo
Or Ostro in some territories.
Sound of famicom disk system is pretty sharp and has good transients. Other versions doesn’t slap that hard
Now I wanna turn on my Switch and play it.
Nintendo is the weirdest company when it comes to enhanced home console ports on portable consoles. It’s cool seeing extra content in a new port, but it sucks that it comes with drawbacks of the console like screen crunch and downgraded audio. It’s a shame Nintendo have never done something that would be the best of both worlds and remake a Super Mario Advance game without the limitations of the GBA
I remember playing that play choice version!
I think the *All-Stars* version is the best one. One of the best video game collections in recorded history actually!
No one talking about Sonic dreams collection
Cool vid. Beat this game when I was a kid just to see if it would reveal why it was so different from all the others. To my surprise at the end it all turned out to be a dream. I thought my questions were answered. It so has it it's a completely different game. Fml
Interestingly a lot of people have the premise of SMB2 completely the wrong way round. A lot of sources say we got the Doki Doki Panic port because Lost Levels was deemed too hard or similar to SMB1 for Western players, but it actually turns out DDP was designed to be SMB2 the whole time. It was just deemed to be too experimental to change the formula so much in the Japanese market. There are a lot of Mario elements in the Japanese DDP which indicate this. The Mario Bros power stars and the coin sounds from SMB1. You could also cite the POW block as well but I think this was it's first appearance outside of the arcade
Yeah, exactly. The game was originally a mario game. It was supposed to be a mario game, and it was developed by the same dev team who made SMB 1, SMB 3, SMW, and SMW 2. Then they converted it into Doki Doki Panic. And then they converted it BACK into a mario game. But it was always supposed to be a mario game, one that focused much more on verticle scrolling as opposed to horizontal scrolling. And it worked. But yeah. It started off as a mario game, developed by the Mario dev team, and it was very briefly Doki Doki panic before ending up as a mario game, as always intended.
The Gaming Historian has a great video about it.
So weird how the POW block used to be considered Mario’s main power up
I liked to play with the princess when I was a child. Its long jump is practical.
So much nostalgia for me with the gba versions music and the Choose a Game! guys voice. I had all the super Mario bro advance games
It's actually crazy how much Doki Doki Panic was basically a Mario game.
its probably what made it so easy to turn it into a Mario game for american fans
IIRC it was originally a mario game
@@comancess4639 Lost Levels, as Western audiences call it, was the sequel to Super Mario Bros, but it was basically more of the same with insane difficulty. Afraid that the world outside Japan would be confised by the similarities and hate it because of the difficulty they were looking for a substitute. Nintendo already made Doki Doki Panic and realised how similar it is to a Mario game, and there was no time to make another SMB2 from scratch. So they changed assets to make it the "sequel" for the rest of the world.
to think about if this game never came to America being smb 2, the shy guys wouldn't exist in the Mario series is crazy, at least that is what id assume would've happened

One common complaint about Super Mario Advance could be how much "easier" it feels compared to the previous versions. I mean, what with the fact that hearts are much more plentiful in SMA, and if you know how to play the Bonus Chance slot game, you could have close to the max of 99 extra lives before World 2.
Well, to be fair, the Pow Block was first introduced in the Arcade Game called "Mario Bros" which is a Prequel of "Super Mario Bros", so it basically would make sense that these games are related

Its honestly strange how the original Yume Kojo was made to promote this grandiose festival in Japan that no one talks about and how it was repurpesed as the official version of SMB2 in the West. Hell, what we know as SMB2 Lost Levels is basically a level rom hack of the og SMB1. So in essence, both versions of SMB2 are basically rom hacks of preexisting games.
