    I just looked up the 2000 NL MVP voting and it is jaw-droppingly insane. By both contemporary and present day standards, Todd Helton was absolutely robbed.

    • @avrivah1101
      @avrivah1101 Před 9 měsíci +4

      True. Kent had no business winning the award that year. Bonds, Jones, Johnson, and Helton all had him beat. It's not the most egregious robbery I've ever seen (Ted Williams' 1941 season holds that distinction), but it's just more evidence that journalists have no business handing out awards.

    At the end of May, Helton's batting average was .421, and it stayed over .400 until June 11th. It went all the way down to .370 on August 2nd, when Helton suddenly went nuts again. Over the next 16 games, he went 34-for-58 -- a .586 average -- to get all the way up to .399. The pace, of course, was unsustainable, and he dropped below .390 on September 4th, then below .380 nine days later. Helton nevertheless became only the second player to hit over .390 that late in a season (other than George Brett*, and maybe Tony Gwynn in an alternate universe) since Ted Williams' 1941 campaign.
    *All the more impressive when you consider that Brett played a total of 117 games in 1980, whereas September 3rd, 2000 was Helton's 136th game of the year.

  • @LoowheezeBreeze

    It sounds great to say the "best month in MLB history", but it's essentially an incredible hot streak which happened to have started on the 1st of a month in which Helton only played 23 games... so, is it also the best 23 game stretch in MLB history?
    And if the number of games played in that month isn't factored in, maybe there's a player who went 3 for 4 on the 1st of the month, got injured, then returned on the final day of the month and went 3 for 4 again... do we give them credit for hitting .750 that month? Or what if a call up makes their debut on the last day of the month, and goes 3 for 3?

    The Rockies had 161 HR's that year...good for 13th out of 16 NL teams. So don't just say "Coors Field" and act like that's an explanation for his stats. Dude slashed a .353/15/59 total away from Coors; those are still monster totals in 2000.

    Now, he's gone from a .500 Avg to a .050 BAC.
    I like Todd, all of us from Colorado do. I just think we all knew he had a problem when someone hi fived him and said alright, and Todd thought they said Bud Light.
    He's a good guy, but you would think $100 million in career earnings would get him to afford a designated driver.
    Later in his career he really should have been trying to be a designated hitter to prolong his career. Now, he needs a designated driver to prolong his life.
    The cop who arrested him didn't actually give him a sobriety test. He simply looked at Todd's driver's license and said, "This guy has been with the Rockies since 1995, he's obviously going to be an alcoholic."
