I’m currently on my fourth playthrough of the remake. I did 3 playthroughs back-to-back when it first came out. The first one I played on medium, the second on hard, and lastly I did the Impossible difficultly. By the time I did the third playthrough I felt like a boss and did it in one go.
Now I’m replaying it, nearly a year later, just for fun. I love this game, and reaaaally hope they redo 2 and 3!

I should DEFINITELY get around to playing this game. When I get the time I’ll probably check it out, as well as the originals. Hopefully, we get a remake of the second game, and that Dead Space Mobile game that leads into 2. It would also be interesting to see what they’d do with 3, if they ever remake that. If they do remake 3 I’m assuming they’d either do the original vision where you’d have Shadow Isaac, or try to salvage the retail game by changing up the story and gameplay. If they do the human enemies should be kept in since they were instrumental to 3, but need a HEAVY rework. MandaloreGaming was saying that the big problem with them was that they didn’t understand what made those mechanics from other games work, and they were at odds with Dead Space’s core design. He was also saying that in the past there was a reverence around guns, but Dead Space 3 just throws them into action sections that don’t really work. There was also a rock paper scissors set up where Isaac can take out Necromorphs, Necromorphs can take out soldiers, and soldiers can take out Issac (I think there was a part in 2 where you’d open up a door to send Necromorphs at these guys who’d cut you down if you tried to fight them head on). What they should’ve done was make the firearms be LETHAL where you’d need to use cover and stealth to sneak around soldiers, otherwise they’d melt you. In the inverse your weapons can do the same to them.
More on the topic of human enemies, ironically Callisto Protocol would’ve greatly benefited from human enemies. For my crazy idea you’d have human enemies who are prisoners that charge at you like the zombies do that you’d get fight up close, and will also try to dodge and block your swings. You’d also have a mixture of guards armed with the same batons you use, and you’d have to block and parry their attacks. You’d also have some armed guards whose weapons are as dangerous as the guns those robot guards have. Guns would just tare through you, but on the inverse they do the same for other humans. Stealth and using cover would be required to get past armed guards. Human enemies would behave intelligently, while the mutants would just charge at you and be more similar to the Necromorphs where you have to keep your distance so they don’t cut you down. That would’ve added some much needed enemy variety into the game, and since it’s a prison they could’ve explored stuff like gang culture and shown how the human guards were only able to keep everyone in control when the robots and other security systems were still working. I’m not going to talk about what they could’ve done with mutations and different zombie variants because it takes 5 seconds of thought to come up with various ways they could’ve been done better.
It’s a shame that Sony is just remaking/remastering games that aren’t even that old. There’s a long list of games from their catalog that could use a remake or enhanced collection to revitalize the franchises. Sadly, we know from the Insomniac leaks that they don’t intend to bring back Resistance, and it’s safe to assume the same is true for a bunch of other similar games. You’d think they’d be eager to bring back a bunch of their older IPs with the recent Activision Blizzard purchase.

This was my personal 'game of the year' for 2023. Everyone goes on and on about how awesome the RE4 remake was, and while I did enjoy that, I liked the Dead Space remake a lot more. I played through RE4 remake twice before I felt bored and lost interest in the game. But I played through the Dead Space remake about a dozen times before I began to felt that same feeling.

@@VoidRetro I did play and really enjoy Callisto when it released, I think the situation with that game is pretty similar to the kind of thing we're seeing with Konami's recent efforts (as discussed on your Snake Eater remake video) and also the Silent Hill 2 remake, where fans create this narrative on the internet that permeates everyone's consciousness and influences the way they experience a game when it actually comes out. The constant and unending nonsense I heard about Callisto before it came out was just non-stop talk about how it was a "modern take on Dead Space" or "spiritual sequel to Dead Space" when the game actually didn't have much of anything in common with Dead Space besides a few surface level aesthetic things and a few of the development team also having worked on DS. Never was it actually said in any press release or official piece of marketing about the game that it was going to be like Dead Space, it was just what people inferred and automatically thought was true because "the internet said so." After playing the game and realizing it was almost nothing like Dead Space, the reaction from many people was "I paid for a game that someone told me was like Dead Space and it's not, so the game is terrible." I thought it carried an interesting story, had great visuals and a fun/challenging combat system that kept me entertained throughout.
As far as Dino Crisis, I've just always thought the first two games are clunkier, more boring, and less atmospheric versions of Resident Evil that were purely a chore to play through, and I've never held any real positive regard for them, even when they first came out. It was trying to mix RE and Jurassic Park, and I also strongly dislike JP, so maybe that's another factor? Just not my thing :D

This remake in my opinion is new golden standard for remakes. It was built from the ground up but was done with such appreciation to the original that it improved what made the original a great game and gave us all what we wanted in this remake mixed in with mechanics from Dead Space 2 and 3 to give us this beautiful and horrifying game. Initially DS1 scared me as a kid and over time as I grew older certain horror games only scare you once and then that’s about it, but with Dead Space remake the jumpscares that you get from random Necromorphs throughout the ishimura keep you in a elevated sense of dread and fear. Not to mention the random sounds of screams and chunks of flesh making a squishing sloshy sound somewhere in the distance with the metal creaking and pipes bursting at random all kept your finger on the trigger ready to dismember any Necromorph that crossed your path. I played this at midnight with my tv cranked up in dark, I never flinched so much when the jumpscares happen and I can say that the jumpscares are refreshing and since the remake dives more into unitology and the markers the devs really used it to their advantage when crafting the uncertainty of what sounds are being made in the ship and in game it could be easily be assumed by us is that the marker is toying with Issac to drive him insane by making him hear and see things that aren’t actually there

Funnily enough, I 100% this game twice over-once on console and once on PC (PC version went on a dirt cheap sale so I picked it up).
My PC could run _most_ of the game comfortably, but chugged a bit on the final boss. For some reason, the environments were hella dark on PC compared to console, even with the brightness turned up. Still didn’t stop me from completing impossible mode with just the plasma cutter (I was trying to see how quickly I could get all of the achievements).
I found that the darker environments made for a much tenser experience as it was harder to keep track of enemies visually-I had to heavily rely on the surround sound simulated by my headphones to avoid getting ganked every fight.

Honestly, of the two big remakes of the year, Dead Space was easily the better one (tho REmake4 was a pleasant surprise). It took one of the best horror games of the 2000s, changed the structure to be more open in a fitting way, improved on the story by adding minor details and a few new twists on familiar events, and honestly? Though I played it on PC, I'd happily buy it again on my console because it is THAT good.
I'd dare go so far as to call Dead Space the best remake in video game history. Well, second only to Resident Evil.

Voicing Isaac in the remake was absolutely the right move. The original game was really dumb in the way the narrative was presented, as people that were on the radio were telling you what you were seeing around you. Game Sack calls this a "radio buddy" and it's one of the worst trends in modern gaming. Thankfully the remake fixes this. Instead Isaac tells them what he's seeing.
I'm not saying a silent protagonist can never work. But other NPC's need to act like your character is responding to them even if there is no actual voice. Treating him like an automaton that has to be told what's around him is not the right way.
