  • Prediabetes is a metabolic condition characterized by elevated blood sugar levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes.
It's considered an intermediate stage in the progression towards diabetes mellitus.
Scientifically, prediabetes is typically defined by fasting plasma glucose levels between 100 and 125 milligrams per deciliter, or an oral glucose tolerance test result of 140 to 199 milligrams per deciliter, two hours after consuming a glucose-rich drink.
Another marker used for diagnosis is the glycated hemoglobin, or HbA1C level, which falls between 5.7% and 6.4%.
Prediabetes is often asymptomatic, meaning individuals may not experience noticeable symptoms.
However, it's a critical stage to identify because it significantly increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other complications if left untreated.
The exact cause of prediabetes is multifactorial and often involves a combination of genetic predisposition, lifestyle factors, such as poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and obesity, and underlying insulin resistance, where cells become less responsive to the action of insulin, a hormone responsible for regulating blood sugar levels.
Management of prediabetes typically involves lifestyle modifications, including dietary changes, regular exercising, quitting smoking, reducing stress, and weight loss if overweight or obese.
Additionally, medications such as metformin may be prescribed in certain cases to help lower blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of progression to type 2 diabetes.
Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels, along with other metabolic parameters, is essential in managing prediabetes and preventing its progression to type 2 diabetes and associated complications.
Early detection and intervention are crucial for minimizing the long-term health risks associated with prediabetes.
