  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Romila Mushtaq, MD, ABIHM is a traditionally trained neurologist, expert in the field of mind-body medicine, a certified yoga and meditation teacher, professional speaker and expert contributor to prestigious publications like the Huffington Post and Livestrong. She is regularly featured on national and local media outlets like FOX News and NPR. Dr. Romie received her medical training and education at the Medical University of South Carolina, The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and The University of Michigan. She previously served as an assistant professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
After surviving career burnout and a life threatening illness, Dr. Romie began her exploration of the medicine behind mindfulness-based therapies as they related to mindful living and the universal benefits of connecting to the present moment. By combining her expertise and professional experiences in neurology and integrative medicine she was able to translate this knowledge to help clients and corporations cope with their stress-infused lives; taking mindfulness from the meditation mat into a mindful way of living...and breathing. Particularly sensitive to the effects of career burnout, Dr. Romie focuses on healing individuals with her unique “Mindset Matters” program.
A personal health and wellness life coach, Dr. Romie heals clients from around the country at the Center for Natural and Integrative Medicine in Orlando, Florida. She also provides a wealth of insight via her website: www.BrainBodyBeauty.com and travels around the country teaching about the scientific and medical evidence behind mindful living.
Romila "Dr. Romie" Mushtaq, MD is a traditionally trained neurologist and an expert in the field of mind-body medicine. As a national mindful living expert, Dr. Romie translates complicated neuroscience and medical data into easy-to-comprehend knowledge. She helps clients cope with stress by teaching the medicine behind mindfulness.

At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. Sucks to see all these personal remarks at her in the comments section. People like Romila are changing the world, one step at a time. Let's not sit behind our computer screens and judge who we *think* she is...but take the beautiful lessons she sends out. Good on you, Romila.

A B, yes, what you say definitely seems fair and objective. I'm not fond of the delivery either, but I wouldn't go as far as making statements like this: "da fuck's with her", or calling her a "drama queen".
Saying you don't like the delivery is one thing, and absolutely ok - everyone has their own style and it's no one's obligation to like it - but name-calling and making disrespectful personal remarks is another. It's upsetting to see the level people think and behave on. It's not acceptable behaviour, we shouldn't be ok with it (even though it's so common these days) and I bet none of these commenters would have the courage to say that to her face...

She is basically saying to start by learning to breathe, and relax your mind, be still, and find peace through a grateful, positive outlook on your life. The people who need this message most, won't get it because they are focused on judging her, what she's wearing or how she acts. lol... Ironic, huh?

hotlink larry, it's IRONIC INDEED! My theory is...
The ones who judge the most, are most likely, GUARANTEED to come back to planet earth after one passes on from this earth. One will continue to come back AGAIN AND AGAIN...
until one becomes SO SICK AND TIRED OF JUDGING OTHERS; because IN REALITY...
      one is ACTUALLY JUDGING oneself.
      As this woman is...
      Be alive, animated (vs. dead)
Be who you are (vs. scared of your own shadow)
Be real (vs. a diluted version of who you are created to be)
      Be YOU!
Because You're ONE OF A KIND!
Besides...life is shorter than we think. So you might as well enjoy the ride.
      Elise aka Godgirl

She walks the talk. Being a Doctor myself, happily retired, I know the ravages of burn out and how it played out. I feel terribly embarrassed at times when I look back. All the symptoms she expresses, hers is more definitely more acute, leading to thoughts of cancer and surgery. I meditate everyday, and what a difference it makes to my life, As they say, its simple, but not easy, you have to get out of the way to experience the simplicity, but profoundness of the technique.

Excellent - her excitement about self-care and meditation are infectious. Was glad she quoted an old but mostly forgotten stat from the CDC - that 80% of the problems we see our doctors about are either outright caused by, or worsened by stress. I lived a similar story to hers - had a host of physical problems and saw 9 doctors over 2 years. Got all kinds of weird diagnosis and nothing they did helped. Finally I turned to mantra meditation and in 2 months I was completely cured. Our bodies have an amazing ability to heal and re-balance if we just take the time to REST. That is what I call meditation - rest.

I have watched many, many videos from others who teach on mindfulness and breathing, all of whom have been very good teachers in their own style. That Romy speaks dramatically, as if she's is acting, is merely a tool to passionately express her message, which she does succinctly and beautifully. I now aspire to be more like her as a communicator, and I am older than her by far. I thought this video was fantastic and clear. What she is telling absolutely confirms and duplicates what I have also been experiencing through mindful meditation, yoga and breathing. Well, said, Doc! Thanks for sharing so eloquently, with charm and humor.

Breathing ? How many of you know , how Buddha attained his enlightenment ? Yes by watching his breath . In India Hindus worship Shiva . There is a book written by him on Meditation . There are 112 methods of meditation given in that book. If you are interested in breathing , first 12 methods are on breathing . Buddha used the first one . The book has 235 verses. Why and. when we breathe through right, left or both nostrils. The commentary in Hindi available with Bihar school of Yoga. By Satyanad Saraswati.

@@mikedowd66 Essentially the rationale is: "it doesn't matter." Eckhart Tolle addressed his reported $80m net worth (and $4m/yr compensation) in a way that made sense. Some people who practice awakening gravitate toward renunciation, depriving themselves of basic elements of living (enough clothing to be warm, enough food to avert huger pangs). They tend to (or can) identify with that suffering rather than learn to not identify with it (which should be the goal: it doesn't matter whether one suffers from not enough, or too much. It doesn't change who you are as the essence of a conscious being. If you identify with either, then you're not as awakened as you can be, presumably want to be). Eckhart said that he doesn't identify with his fortune, and therefore it doesn't matter. He could lose it all today and it wouldn't matter. (I believe that was Osho's perspective too. Just a circumstance he could create for himself among many circumstances. It didn't matter what he did as long as he wasn't identified with his largess, or the opposite renunciation if he'd chosen that instead).
That makes sense. But... it sounds _convenient_ too. Charging followers large sums for retreats, books, etc., because "it doesn't matter" doesn't sound quite as reasonable as giving it all away and living the life of a renunciate (which someone could identify with too much too, as an identity, wearing it on their sleeve, "being a renunciate" rather than just a person in the moment. In buddhism, the goal is "the middle way." Recognizing that extremes tend to result from (or in) suffering. Both Eckhart's & Osho's path doesn't seem so middle (compared to say, Ram Dass who reportedly had $200k when he passed away. He'd assigned his book royalties to charities, lived a relatively basic lifestyle). But, for you and me, the middle way is to take what is true and makes sense from them regardless of whether they're perfect or not (by our standards). My judging them is just my own excess. I can see both sides. Better yet, both teachers say things that are very true to me. I don't have to be either/or about their consistency (according to my views).
