Johnny is a genius and it is on full display here - this is comedy gold - Grodin/Carson verbal brawls never get old and always bring me huge big laughs - thanks guys and RIP
This Grodin/Carson bit is a gift that just keeps giving. You can see them cracking each other up through all the faux tension, it’s just the best from each of them. Love it, and RIP to both f them. What a gift.
A lot of people don't realize that Charles Grodin and Johnny Carson were very good friends and this was kind of an act that Charles would show up in disdain and they both would play poker at Johnny's house with Steve Martin and Chevy Chase and some others.
He's one of them actors I wish did more because i cant get enough of him... Charles Grodin is so different in his own way and I love it. His sense of humor makes me laugh so hard and I can relate alot to it.. He truly cares, he just wants to be a pain. I feel it makes the interview Real.
I took my 14 year old brother to manchester to the pictures when we were kids in the 80's. Came home on the train together laughing together back to bolton. The other day I watched it with my eleven year old son. Trying to mute the swear words a bit. We had a laugh riot on the sofa. And he quotes the Duke at least twice a day . I love that film. The ending is beautiful
@@fluorosco it's probably my favourite movie of the two together. I just don't know how those two wound up in this picture. The swearing was bad but it some how vanishes in this beautiful story.
@@fluorosco Deniro's screen daughter giving him her cash savings was *deep* , that was pure father daughter love. This movie for me just had it all. The music score still plays in my head every time I hear about the movie.
Oh my god funny! Grodin "Come on, give me more." (about his book) Johnny: "It's a book that you shouldn't put aside lightly. -- -- You should throw it with great force." ..... unreal funny.
jonathan winters was the best. johnny always genuinely enjoyed him. don rickles in most of his appearances repeated same old jokes about jews, his wife and jewelry and to be honest ed macmahon never felt comfortable with rickles and even johnny pretended to enjoy. 3 grodin interviews were absolutely amazing and his others were also good. rich little was another great guest.
I know. Now all the talk shows would rather play stupid kindergarten games with their guests. "Coming up, Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Scarlett Johansson and musical guest Slipknot play Duck, Duck, Goose".
A time sorely missed when a smart talented show host asked witty questions and sustained a good conversation with his guest, no one can hold a candle to Johnny, last good show host Craig Ferguson and nothing else after in my opinion.
I love it!!! Johnny gets hilarious retribution for Charles’ antagonizing wit. I love that Charles had a real laugh because of Johnny’s remarks. He got him good and it was funny. 🙂
@@DUCKSAREEVILLLLLLLL He was also a much more popular star in the 70s and 80s and largely retired for the last 10 or 15 years of David Letterman's career.
@@MatsThyWit Grodin had said, I think in a Tom Snyder interview, that The Tonight Show had him under contract to make regular appearances after his 2nd time on the show. But, yeah, he was retirement age on by the time he was on Letterman.
@@DUCKSAREEVILLLLLLLL Grodin looked so good for so long that I think a lot of people were completely unaware of his age. He was 86 years old when he passed away just a couple years ago. Johnny must've looked forward to these to break up all those other nights with the hollow and vapid words from the most uninteresting people trying to sell some awful movie
They both had good chemistry. Letterman was better at leaning into the awkward banter. Carson was a little too old school in his comedy sensibilities, he couldn't help winking at the audience to let them know it was a joke. Letterman let the audience buy into the idea that Charles Grodin hated him. He seemed to like being a punching bag for Grodin.
I agree. The truth is Grodin's schtick unnerved Johnny. You can tell Johnny's not enjoying it because he doesn't laugh much with Grodin. With guests he finds funny, he laughs his ass off.
@@MatsThyWit Yeah, you nailed it. This kind of irreverent comedy began around the time SNL got started. Carson understood exactly what Grodin was doing, but it still made him a little uncomfortable because he wasn't used to it. Letterman, OTOH, knew all-too-well the art of irreverent comedy. That being said, I liked Grodin's appearances on Johnny's shows more than the one's with Dave. Johnny's discomfort was hilarious, as were most of his counter punches.
@@lynnturman8157 Carson is completely in on the joke. It's funnier to keep it dry and "go at each other", if he started laughing at his jokes the bit is gone.
@@watchman1178 I feel the same, I like the Letterman appearances as well but the bit works best IMHO if the host pretends to feel uncomfortable. Letterman stil laughed a bit too much and sort of showed the bit too much. Still hilarious though!

The only thing I don't like about the Carson videos with Grodin is that Carson always gives away the schtick by laughing before commercials.
carson was ready to hit him
wish it was louder
Let's tell the truth that all of this is scripted but really the level of that writing is just at another level. Very subtile and perfectly executed.
Grodin sacrificed himself so much for Johnny.
Grodin is left handed, yes?
Carson must be so bored with all these people just selling crap on his show - so this must be refreshing.
VOLUME IS SO LOW
That's because they are both whispering.
