Sony RX10 III Review - After Owning for 3 Months
Vložit
- čas přidán 25. 09. 2016
- This is the Sony RX10 Mark III. A hybrid 20 megapixel photo and 4K video camera with a killer built-on 24-600mm lens.
I’ve been using this camera for the past three months on client shoots and doing personal tests with it, so in this video I’m going to do a full review of the camera body, lens, its buttons and features, share how I’ve used the PlayMemories app with it, go into the cons on the camera, and share who I think this camera is perfect for.
Who is this camera perfect for?
I think this is the best all-around pro-consumer level hybrid camera on the market. I think it is the perfect camera for a parent or someone traveling, with the ability to not need extra lenses, but have a wide range to zoom in during sporting events, capture stills or video, and have that all in one compact package. Then you can quickly share what you captured wirelessly to your phone or TV.
I think this is also a great B-cam for someone that films on Sony cameras already (whether at the alpha 7 series level or up into the fs7 or fs5), since it has S-Log 2 and UHD 4K with extra zoom reach to 600mm that you probably don’t own a lens for.
This would also be a solid option as an all-in-one for a videographer filming documentary style, you won’t stand out with the small form factor and you’ll be able to capture beautiful footage handheld that is extremely usable in post without any stabilization. You could get solid still Raw photos out of it as well.
Personally I’ve been using it lately on a client project where I need a very detailed overhead camera angle to show calligraphy and being able to put a light 4K camera up high and control it from my phone has been incredible.

This review was INCREDIBLY helpful. Thanks for posting!
You're welcome. :)
Just bought the camera for our youtube content. Good review thank you for doing it.
Best Matt
Just bought this camera and I should be getting it tomorrow, so I am excited to use it! Thanks for the video to help me get started.
Just the kind of review I was looking for!
I've had this camera since it first came out. It is a game changer. I've hardly used my ILC's since I got it. My "kit" is now my RX1rII and this RX10 III. I can get it done.
Great video. You have a steady and pleasant voice that is easy to listen to! Very elaborate and great colloquial diction that is easy to follow, thanks so much
Have the RX-10 I and love it... thanks for the review of III !
You're welcome. :)
Great review! I have the RX10 ii and I really like it, as well, both for video and (to my surprise) stills. The zoom range of the iii is definitely cool.
Thanks Brian. :)
Great review. I got this camera from july and I love it. I got other 2 fullframe dslr and I didn't used them at all. If you can live with smaller sensor, this camera almost perfect.
+Attila Kovács Totally agree. Thanks for chiming in.
Thanks Caleb, very nice and clear review on this camera. Much appreciated
So perfect for me then for the footy and nice pictures while on a walk :) love the idea of play memories apps some do amazing things :)
Fantastic review! And... lovin' that you're reppin' both the Spartans and the Tigers!! Go Green!!
Go white! :)
Great insight i currently use the Sony HX 400v, this cam is a great set up, less zoom but I like the 4K UHD. THanks.
Thanks, Caleb, for a great review!
You're welcome. :)

Great clean review! Keep up the good work ;)
Excited to start using this bad boy!
Great review! Do you think you can make a full length narrative film with this?
Extremely helpful video! Can you do a variable zoom rate on the zoom ring? Or does moving the zoom ring cause it to move at one set rate, even though it might be set in the menu? When shooting video, I sometimes want to zoom in or out VERY slowly and then stop zooming without making a noticeable stop. Can this be accomplished with the RX10iii?
Great review! Super helpful!
Outstanding review. Thanks.
This is a great camera , and your review was really good 😊
+Mike Luis Thanks Mike. :)
nice, id love to see this in a talking head interview set up to see how it performs and the shallow depth of field
+PeglegMedia f4 is plenty for a shallow depth of field, especially when zoomed in past 50mm. I used this to film my previous "overhead camera rig" video for another sample.
An extremely helpful review... Thank you kindly =)
Thanks for the review!
Any time!
Great review! I used to own the first RX10 and enjoyed it quit a bit.
I just came to your channel from DSLR Video Shooter's b-roll video. Subbed =)
Awesome Zackary! Glad to have you here. What are you filming on now?
Using the GH4 now =)
Good review. How about heating issues while filming 4k or slow motion?
was INCREDIBLY
great review, very helpful
Hi Caleb, thanks for your informative review. I have a question about auto-focus. I have Sony a77ii and a6000. The a6000 in AF mode will keep your shutter, aperture and iso as you have dialed, but thea77ii will not. It automatically puts the camera's video mode to "P", meaning that the camera chooses any shutter or aperture it feels for. Only in manual focus mode you can by your self decide on all settings in the a77ii. So, my question is how does the RX10iii deal with this issue?
Excellent review.
Caleb;
While shooting video in MANUAL mode, and f stop is set at F11, will F stop remain at F11, while zooming?
THanks.
Really helpful video. Thanks a lot ! Short video but really detailled one ! :D
Would you still recommend it in 2018 ? I'm searching a camera with strong 4k video capability while being able to take good stills for my work (especially corporate videos where the camera would be on a tripod)
Very good presentation. Pity you never followed up with the RX10mk4?
Thanks for the Video! We bought the camera and like it a lot. Yes it does have focus problems but so did our AX100 until Sony provided a firmware update for it. Sony listens and their updates usually correct the problems. The last update for our A6000 was great. it allowed for compressed 4K shooting and fixed a few bugs. The other feature I like about this camera is the ability to shoot with out any shutter clicks! great as a second camera while recording.
Cammile1, have I missed something? You mention: "The last update for our A6000 was great. it allowed for compressed 4K shooting...". Pls tell more about that 4K...
Not true 4K but at least you can pull decent stills from the video. It it in their latest firmware update.
Thinking about getting this just for the 600mm lens zoom. It would be cheaper than trying to get a 600mm lens for any E-mount. What do you think?
Thanks for this movie! It is Helpfull
Excellent review Caleb, I was wondering since I found this locally used for a great price if this fits my current needs. I am a 360 photographer, drone video guy who needs a good camera for doing 4k video (I produce a lot of 1 min videos for our travel site), interviews with tourists in the street, and would be nice if I could use for northern lights but I have a professional 360 camera that handles it beautifully. I can get this camera for about 800 USD here in Iceland, do you think this would fit my needs?
I need only one battery, nothing more because I use it with a power bank always connected to the Sony using the USB cable, from the power bank output to the Sony USB Micro port input, in that way, there is no need at all to buy MANY BATTERIES as you explained, the battery always keeps charged and I spend different days shooting until the power bank needs to be recharged. Then, I keep using the camera with the battery which was all the time charged from the power bank and in this way, there is no risk of running out of battery, never. Thank you very much for your video, great work! Greetings from Germany.
Seems like a heck of a versatile camera. 👍
It is believe me
super video!!!! Thank you!!!
I researched several compact camera options before my trip to Japan. The RX10 III was my final decision. I purchased the Tascam TM-2X stereo mic to go on the hot shoe. This combination proved very effective at capturing the immersiveness of Tokyo's massive cityscapes and their sounds, as well as the mountains of Hakone and Yamanashi Prefecture. I'd spend an average of 15 hours a day on my feet traveling through cities and countryside with this camera strapped around my neck.
Now, I own two Sony FS7s, back in the studio, but I would never subject them to airports and air travel. Plus, fully rigged, they are just too much camera to lug around all day. And the lens changes would slow me down.
The RX10 III has a lens that almost seems to cheat physics, in that it's absurdly wide range of focal lengths should make for a very mediocre image quality.. WRONG. I was shocked that the sharpness of this lens rivaled many of my cine prime lenses. Furthermore, the image stabilization makes 600mm hand held shooting possible. And if shooting UHD video, as was my primary purpose on this trip, you get an additional boost in zoom via electronics (making the difference between 20MP and 8MP) with lossless zoom to about 1000mm effective.
The downside is that the RAW files cannot be ready by Photoshop. You need to use a converter, such as Adobe RAW Converter. Additionally, my friends running Premiere CC could not open the video files from the RX10 III. But my older copy of CS6 could edit them fine. So I bought a powerful gaming laptop with a powerful GPU and put CS6 on it and edited my dailies and took advantage of 1000mb/s upstream speeds in my apartment in Kamata and uploaded about 585GB of videos to CZcams over the course of 2 weeks.
Last night, after watching a movie, while the projector was warmed up, I fired up my NLE and switched the projector input to the NLE and switched my sound system over to the NLE audio. Turned on the Sonic Hologram and sat in front of my 12' screen and watched my footage. For a few minutes, I was transported back to Akihabara, as the soundfield wrapped 180° around me and the clear, wide angle shots filled up my field of vision.
Granted the RX10 III is not an FS7. It's manual lens focusing is hit and miss. It has other tradeoffs, but for a compact camera that's not going to get the attention and unwanted scrutiny of Customs agents, it does a job that would be hard to do with a bigger camera. That one lens covers a huge range and does it better than I'd expect from a budget priced camera. For travel, this is THE one camera to bring, if you can only pack one.
how was this camera handling the low light shots? especially 4k
Hi Caleb
Can you control the Start/Stop trigger function in HFR (960fps) with the phone/tablet app?
The sound of the zoom operating registers in videos in my camera. Is this typical? Bought used under a return deal, should I send it back? tia.
Hi Caleb - I know you reviewed the XC10 prior, what do you think between these two? How would this integrate in with Canon footage? Great review / Overview!
If my other cameras were Canon I'd go with the XC10 or XC15 so I can shoot in Canon Log and match them up well.
If my other cameras were Sony I'd go with the RX10.
If I don't care about matching or am starting from scratch I'd go with the Sony.
We've actually matched Sony and Canon cameras fairly easily lately though if they are both in default color modes. Once you start shooting in log it gets more painful.
if you punch in/zoom to check focus and its blurry, your camera settings are incorrect i guess, you could change the zoom options from digital zoom to clear image zoom, in that way you could see a much sharper image when punching in.
Hey Caleb, a big reason why I want this camera is because it seems to be the only decent camera out there offering a wide range of slow motion options for an affordable price. Im looking to get a camera that can capture something like a hummingbird flying in slow mo. Does the 2-4 second rule apply to every level of slo motion this camera offers or just the 480 fps and 980 fps options? Also are there any over cameras out there that offer 500 fps plus slow mo for around the same price or cheaper you'd recommend that I look into? Thanks
I just got this camera yesterday.... as far as the USER MANUAL goes, am I missing something? There is no documentation telling you how to use each feature. Is it all on-line? Also, how long can you shoot a (960 fps slow-mo)? Only 2 or 4 seconds worth of the action?
+EffingtonCouldBe I think it is 2 seconds for 960 fps. And yeah, the manual isn't super detailed. There should be more info online.
I always like your videos. The Rx10m3 has worked out to be alright for me. I've found myself doing more photography lately. The reason I'm disappointed however is because I find the OIS to be rather poor. I understand the 4k vs 1080p is different, but I have shakey footage using both settings. I normally pride myself on my hand held work, but with this camera, I've used Warp Stabilizer too many times. Any suggestions? Could I have damaged the OIS in someway? I've had it for about 3 years now.
I doubt the OIS is damaged. From what I can tell the stabilizer is software, not hardware like current Sony cameras.
Great review! Mine arrives tomorrow. I am moving from a Nikon D3100 and would use it in "parent" mode for travel, kid events, etc. I saw several good recommendations for settings for smooth zoom, continuous, manual digital focus, etc. If I'm on the go, I don't know that I want to get into messing with too many settings. What would you recommend for a good setup as I would use it. Love my D3100, but just don't want to carry my bag with me everywhere we go to change lenses. Thanks!
INCREDIBLE
Caleb, great review! I wonder if I might pick your brain about one aspect of the camera based on your experience with it. I am a nature photographer and film a lot of action shot such as birds in flight. My typical carry around rig is the Canon7D Mark II with a Canon 100-400mm L lens. I love this camera but my one frustration is struggling wit finding the best settings for shooting birds in flight for the fastest lock on to the subject, and the ability to change focus as the subject moves towards or away from the shooting position. What would you recommend as the best settings for the camera for using it for birds in flight? As an aside, the sports action choice in the SCN mode has been about the best so far, but I know there has to be a optimal setting of the various, focus, etc., parameters for the mission. Thanks, Sandy Scott
Thanks for a very nice review. About the HDMI out, can I use a Atomos Ninja V with this Camera?
Yes you can.
Hi:
Great video.
I want to buy this camera on October 1st.
If I set the aperture to F4 like you suggested, what MODE do I take photos in? I want to shoot P mode.
If I shoot in P mode it will adjust shutter speed and aperture, right?
Can I manually turn the aperture ring when I am on the MF mode?
Also I saw a video where the Aperture ring said F6 for example but on the screen on top on the camera it said something like F3. Why is that?
Hi... Really enjoy your video... It just that I'm now really torn down between constant aperture of RX 10 M2 & longer reach of M3... FYI, I'm just a hobyist who on;y shoot for myself mostly... Thank you for your kind opinion... Cheers...
Hey Caleb, is this camera good enough for food photography?
Cheers
Great Review!!
Thank you!
hi caleb. I am filming with a sony a7 s II and a rokinon 35.mm lens. .... do you think I will miss the sensitivity of the a7 s II ??. For everything else you describe, it seems to me a very practical camera. I have lost the a7 s and I have to buy another camera to film
Great review! I have a Sony DSC-HX400V with a 1200 mm zoom! Take sharp photos and videos! I love it. A 1200 mm zoom lens cost how much and how bulky is it! I wont mind this new RX10 M3 cos its 4K and high speed video!
Hi, would you say 600 zoomed footage is unusable as it is too shaky even on the tripod? this is my main concern before purchasing it. thanks
It is not at all shaky!
Hi Caleb !! I wanna have the most all around bridge camera and I'm hesitating between the Sony RX10 iv and the Sony RX10 iii. The first one is more expensive but does the price difference worth it? I also saw the Lumix FZ1000 ii at the half of the price. Can you advise me please? Thanks for your time
How if i use this camera for soccer photography? Is it good enough AF-C on this camera?
I just saw a review of 3-axis gimbal Zhiyun Crane and seen in a review that this camera works fine with it. I'm just getting into professional photography and think this would really be a good and handy option for me.
Yep, this camera will work great on a small gimbal like that. Very lightweight.
Nice review, looking forward for you review on Rx10 IV, why did you choose this camera over GH4, I am contemplating between Sony Rx IV vs GH5. I am on a budget, hobbyst, love landscape, Down side of GH5 is I have to purchase lens which would cost another 1000$ which means it would all come to 3000$plus, If I go with sony Rx 10 IV no need for lens. How are the stills with this camera.. Thanks for your opinion.
I got this along with a client so that our cameras (at the time) would match. They were to be used for livestreaming so clean HDMI out was important. The still are solid with it too.
Great video ... question, I have an RX10 III and have lost audio record on the camera. It will record video on a remote mic but only that way. Can you help me?
Only thing I can think of is that your record volume is too low so it seems like it is off when you switch to using the internal mic. If it isn’t that, contact Sony.
yes very helpful.. i was looking for a B Camera for my a7sii .. .so i ll buy it
Does the slow motion record audio in slomo yet??
How does the image stabilization compare to that of the Canon G3X?
+MrNYCman530 This camera has the best stabilization in camera I've seen from something in this price range.
Hi Caleb, Thanks for the review, I notice you may be a surfer, what is the IQ like at the long end for surf videos and does the focus lock on well and keep up. Thanks.
It looks great at 600mm. This would be a great option for filming surfing.
Thanks for that Caleb.
ive had problems with soft focus
Can you take a photo whist in record mode?
I don't think so.
Where are you from my friend? Poland? Awesome review man! I think this is my Camera! You have a great idea for a Mikrophone? A real one? Mobile Like Talk Show? With recording Funktion in a high Quality?
5:15 Control app -- can you set focus point with it and trigger shutter release? Can you start video recording? Can you move focus point while filming? You mention things you can do, but that leaves us hanging as to whether other important functions you are just glancing over, or whether you cannot control them.
You can start and stop video recording, yes. Can't change the focus point while filming. Not sure about changing the focus point in photo mode, but you can trigger a photo.
Thanks, Caleb.
i always wonder if not having constant aputure and built in nd filter being a major con? and go for the mark2?
oh great review btw. amazing !
Yeah, if you don't need the extra 400mm zoom and would get more out of the constant aperture & ND Filter, go with the mark 2. It is cheaper too.
Well done!
Hi from New Zealand.... just wondering what your thoughts on this camera for a night time photos of the northern lights in iceland
While this isn't the best low light camera out there for this price range (that would be the a7S II), if you need an all-in-one option with a built-on lens, this would be a great choice.
Hi Caleb! Interesting and informative video. I bought the original RX-10 thinking that for CZcams, it would make a nice camera with a small form factor. I did this despite the fact that Panasonic GH-4 had come out in 4K. I did this, because of the placement of the battery compartment which prohibited you to gain access when the camera was on a tripod, It also did not have a dedicated headphone jack. Anyway, I've enjoyed the fact that Sony RX-10 camera can hold 2.8 throughout the variable focal length range, as well as the built-in neutral density filters. Sorry to hear that these are gone in the newest model.
By the way have they increased the recording time in the Mark iii, or is it shorter because it's 4K?
Thanks for all your postings! Keep them coming.
Hey Keith, thanks for the kind words. :)
To answer your question, the recording limits in both HD and UHD are 29:59.
Losing the ND filter and constant aperture is a real bummer, but I'm still considering it as a C Cam. I shoot a lot of wedding and corporate video.
Does the aperture change whene zoom in ?
I just got the camera and the image is great! One thing I see on your ipad is the menu to control the aperture, iso, etc. But my apps don't allow me to do that? Do you still have that capability. MSU alum go green.
+Darren Hesselink You have to be in manual mode I think. Go white!
Caleb Wojcik - had to update the remote app on the camera - (facepalm)... Thanks for messaging back.
can you shoot at aperture f8 with a fast shutter speed like 1/500? for capturing surfers
Of course
Hi, good video. What mic did you use to record your review?... i like the sound
+Alejandro Bohorquez NTG-3. Link in description.
Caleb Wojcik Thanks
Caleb,
Thanks for this review.
Would like an update review + comparison on all Bridge/Superzoom cameras with 1" sensor available in the market:
- Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 Mark II
- Leica V-Lux 5
- Panasonic Lumix FZ2000/3000
- Canon Powershot G3X
- Sony Cybershot RX10 Mark IV
Thanks
I just bought this camera used from a friend. From what I can see, this one piece of equipment replaces my beloved Canon body and
Four lenses. My priority when traveling is lean and mean simplification. I am also frankly wowed by some nifty special effects that enhance landscapes, birds, botanical shots. I love it so far. Nice review.
+Larry Keyser Thanks! Glad you’re enjoying the camera.
Great review .....
+Jess Demant Aggeboe Thank you. :)
Looking to buy this in 2021. Is it still holding up or is it outdated by now and should I look elsewhere? I know there is an RX10 IV, but it's out of my budget. (€1000 max)
I owned this camera for about a month, repurchased a used RX10 for $350 on Ebay, (I had sold my original RX10 to cover cost of the III) and proved to myself that the first version RX10 is sharper with better contrast images! So the only major advantage of this camera which costs $1000 more is the extended reach of the lens (it is not even constant aperture at 2.8 like the original). For my purposes the RX10 represents a far greater value...better lens, 1/3 the cost, constant 2.8 aperture.
I'm a Fujifilm x-series user for 6 years now, I was recommended the RX10 IV for the replacement of the Fujifilm 100-400mm lens. Do you have any experience of thr mark IV, especially when shooting birds in flight/tracking action? Thanks in advance.
I haven’t use the Mark IV but this version was great for when I tested it tracking action for baseball.
Hey Caleb, perfect timing since I'm thinking about buying this camera in a couple of weeks.
What do you think about it's AF in stills mode?
The autofocus is MUCH better in stills mode than in video mode. You'll get similar performance to only Sony mirrorless camera, but not quite as good as the a6300 or a7R ii.
Nice Caleb.....Thanks
Will the camera overheat after long periods of livestreaming? Or if it is able to livestream to obs?
I never had a problem with this camera overheating and I would film for hours on end with it plugged into AC power in 4K.
More footage would be very apreciated. Even do, thank you! ;)
Do you recommend this or the the new Mark iv for stock footage?
+Fun Kiddos Dubai The new IV has better autofocus, so I’d go with that if you can afford it.
Great, comprehensive review. Do you have an update planned, reflecting your ongoing experience of using this camera? For those who buy the RX10iii and find Sony's short leaflet inadequate, I would thoroughly recommend Alexander White's "Photographer's Guide to the Sony DSC-RX10 III: ...". The ebook version is my constant companion. :-)
+LanzUTube2020 I have used it quite a bit on client shoots, mainly as my overhead camera rig, and I’m still happy with it. Especially the ability to use the Sony iOS app as a monitor.
The RX10 MIII sounds compelling, but it will be hard to consider, since the RX10 M II I bought in Sept 2015 failed me three times, needing repairs. Good thing I spent the $250 for 3 years of coverage, because at $400 a pop to repair it, it would have ended up in the trash by now. It just failed me for the third time on another trip. All the buttons on the back just stop working. It still turns on and off, and takes pictures at whatever I have it set at - a true point and shoot camera, for $1300. How long will the Mark III or IV last? Has anyone else had issues with these cameras?
I've never had any issues with the Mark III failing. Has worked pretty well for me.
The same thing has happened with my RX10 M III, a newer version of your M II. The rear buttons do not work. The telephoto does not function. Cost to repair will be $500 + (that does not include parts).
it happened to my A6000, authorized repair center told me it is a common issue and it is not so common on the later A6300 (which I bought on sale). I have the RX10m3 but I wish I had bought the Panasonic FZ1000. AF seems a lot better, Sony RX10iii AF is not good for moving objects at telephoto. The rear buttons unresponsiveness I was told is a logic board issue. I am wondering if humidity inside the camera may cause the failure.
hi. i need to buy a high frame camera but our budget is about 2000 $. what is your idea about this camera RX10 III? is it useful for scientific video capturing?i need more than 200 fps.
please help me. Thanks for your video.
This would be a good option. Goes up to 1000fps in PAL mode.
what do you think about RX100 V?
Amazing camera! Bit pricey for me but maybe one day!
what about dynamic range and picture sharpness compared to a DSLR?
+baselb80 Very similar DR and sharpness.
What's that white speck on the front of lens around 9:15?
Just a random piece of dust or lint that got inside somehow. It is way on the edge of the lens though, so it is never in front of the shot.
Cool. Thanks for the explanation!
Really good review, although slightly more Videos user bias. But in fairness I think this camera IS primarily aimed at video makers. What I can't get over is the sensor is as good as most micro 4/3rds and quite a few ASPC, which is incredible.
+Keith Manaton I mainly film videos, hence the bias. Thanks for the kind words!
I have ordered the NEW XC10 M4. Would you recommend getting the M4 over the M3 especially for that over 300 points Auto focus.
+George Karaolis Yeah, the autofocus on the Mark IV is much better.
Caleb Wojcik Many thanks..!!
is it also possible to get the bokeh look in video and foto with the lens ?
Yes. Bokeh is possible, even at the widest 24mm.
thank u
