    Your reviews of the RX10 2&3 are the most comprehensive and practical that I have seen. The one area where I would have like a little more detail is using external microphones for audio capture via the input connector on the side of the camera. I use both hand held and lav mics for run and gun internviews and wonder about the quality to be expected. Thanks again for such hands on knowledge.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 7 lety

      I appreciate your kind words, thanks! The quality would be entirely dependent on the microphone used. If you're interested, the mic in does provide plug in power.

      That's very kind of you to say, thanks for commenting. But note that if a camera is really terrible, I just return it un-reviewed. I find that if a camera is terrible, the review is just a comedy sketch.

    Thank you again, Maarten, for your very good review! After only three years, I decided to buy a second hand RX100 III by swapping my small Sony AX53 camera. Your warm recomendation weighed a lot in that decision! I am one of your loyal fans (I mean, admirers), and send you our greetings from Romania!

    Maarten. Thank you for a great detailed review on this camera. I'm viewing this in 2021 and have just purchased the Sony RX10 iii (ex display model) and your honest review helped me to make the decision. Thank you so much for the time and effort you take to produce such excellent and informative videos.

    By far the best camera reviews on youtube! Looking to replace my a5100 with something that has a mic input (I know silly reason for a new camera). I mostly do videos for youtube, and I'm looking at the rx10 3, the a6300, and the a6500. Im also not opposed to switching brands if there was a better camera out there. Your videos are definitely helping with my research. Thank you!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 7 lety +1

      Thanks for the kind words, always appreciated. I don't find that a silly reason at all (although an external audio recorder is always an option). Those are good options - I did find the A6500 to be appreciably better, so unless the wallet can't sustain it, that would be my video production recommendation. The "stick with Sony" alternative would be the A7 series, likely the A7S II. Alternately (and for video) I'd consider the Panasonic G85 - which I will be reviewing shortly.

    Excellent review, and after a few months deliberating whether to choose the RX10ii or RX10iii, I chose the latter, having sold my DSLR and lenses! Only had it a few days, and not been able to get out and shoot with it yet, but it looks and feels great, comfortable to hold and the viewfinder is outstanding and so clear! Your reviews are so good and comprehensive that they serve also as a valuable user guide too, so thank you very much. I fail to see how anyone could be disappointed with it. Expensive yes, BUT considering the amazing versatility for photography it provides, without the need for a DSLR and a ton of lenses, it's a very good compromise. Even a 60-250 lens for my last camera would have cost close to £900 (then add wide angle zoom and a dedicated macro lens and that adds another £800 easily!) So there are some of us who simply do not have ready cash to invest in an arsenal of lenses at different focal lengths which couldn't match the reach of the Sony! I think IQ is subjective rather than entirely scientific, and the 1 inch sensor is rather impressive. The images on the RX10iii group on flickr are superb. So a great purchase for me, and helped of course by your fine review :)

    Well, well Martin thank you for an unbiased, real world review, so refreshing. I am struggling between the Sony Rx10III and the Lumix FZ2500. For me the Sony Zeiss glass is better than the Leica on the FZ2500, regardless of the extra 120mm zoom on the Sony, as well the Sony is more solidly built with alloy frame and weather resist.The FZ2500 outshines however in no limit video, touch, tilt, swivel screen, easier to navigate menu. I can buy a very lightly used Sony RX 10III (400shot count) for the same price as a new Lumix FZ2500 and I am still a fence sitter.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 7 lety

      I would take the Sony. The lens makes it. Unless you are frequently recording videos over 30 minutes that have no natural break to stop and restart.

    I just found this being sold here in the Philippines (as of July 2020) for 660 USD which is actually pretty low for our country. Generally they're still 1200 USD and would you believe the Rx10 IV is 2000 USD here? But the lack of flip screen is holding me back given I do a lot of piece-to-camera as a solo creator.
    Gonna watch the space for a while and see what else comes up or if prices go lower.

    Excellent review as usual. Thank you so much. One comment I'd add is that at 12:55 you mentioned that no conversion from raw (ARW) and it is true, however the free Photo Retouch can manipulate JPEG images and has even Horizontal Adjustment (available only in Nikon) which are excellent for in camera editing before uploading images with the Direct Upload app. If Sony would make the API public, that would be great to see excellent new apps.

    • @nemethmik
      @nemethmik Před 7 lety

      Panasonic has recently announced the jaw-dropping FZ2000 (less expensive than RX10III, and it could be a very tough and severe competitor. In RX10IV (if ever) Sony should add phase detect AF points (from RX100V), touch screen from A6500, and ND filter fro AX100. That would be a killer camera.

      I meant no in-camera RAW to JPG conversion - most other manufacturers offer this feature. Yes, when it was first announced, I did hope that third parties would develop apps too, but. The API was released, and a friend and I tried it, but it proved to be limited and difficult. And thanks binge-watching my videos and all the good comments, appreciated.

    Excellent review! Good detailed review on the D500, too. Waited so many years for that camera and love it for photography. But I am definitely NOT loving its live-view video focusing. I need something for good reliable video. I've been thinking about this RX10 III, or maybe the Sony AX100 camcorder (or if it's not upgraded soon, maybe the AX53). Or would you recommend exploring the viewfinder hood option for the D500? Have you used one? Would that make D500 video comparable to the RX10 III? Henry's has a few options, but most of them seem to be special no-cancellation orders.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 7 lety

      I appreciate the kind words, thanks. If you are shooting a lot of video, particularly if you want to shoot performances, etc. that are over 30 minutes, a real video camera, like the AX100 (czcams.com/video/SHSplI0x6vU/video.html) is a better option.
      Sorry, no experience shooting with a viewfinder hood.

  • @HomesickMac

    Fabolous review, as well as the one of RX10 II , which I almost bought. Then I saw your new review and some others', still not convinced - the III is rediculously more expencive.
    I own a Sony A5100 which I purchased after seeing your review and I adore it for everything it's amazing at. Autofocus, touch screen and touch-stills-shooting, size, great sensor, great video formats, evennthe kit lens is ouperforming many many others on even more expencive cameras.
    I'm experimenting with applying the Slog and LUTs for color grading the A5100 footage ( which it doesn't actually support) and if I can somehow assume that I could use a RX10 II (OK, or III...) with Slog and combine the footages with both cameras- well, thrn my A5100 could become a second camera in some interview filming as well as with the two angle custom ordered instructional guitar videos I do for clients.
    I'll have to give it some thinking, II or III....

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 8 lety

      You can colour grade and match anything ... before you start SLogging everything, watch my video ... czcams.com/video/g5ByPkuhuM4/video.html There is nothing about SLog that improves all video, and in some cases it may deteriorate it. If you know the "effect" you want, go ahead and grade, but remember, these are 8 bit cameras.

    I consider buying RXiii mainly for video recording (for amater use such as travels or kids in backyard….)
    Is auto-focus system in video mode same on RXii and RXiii (wich camera have better tracking/continuous auto focus in video mode)?
    Does RXiii have beter image stabilization in video mode then RXii?
    If I don’t need that much zoom like RXiii provide is then RXii better buy?
    I hope you can answer on this questions, sorry for my bad english and best wishes and good health from Serbia.

      Thanks for the kind words. And hello to my friends in Serbia - nice to hear from you. I believe (and I didn't test them side by side) that the focus and stabilization features are the same between the RX10II and RX10III, and if you don't need the zoom offering in the RX10III, then the RX10II is an equivalent choice at a few dinars less.

    I have been using this camera for a few months now. Coming from the a6000 I feel I lost some in image quality. I love the all in one but feel I need to switch again back to the 6500 or wait for the a7r ii to drop in price more once the next gen comes out. I already have the 100v so the rx10 is like having that longer zoom.

    Fantastic review, Sir. Thanks for sharing : )
    Besides, I'm wondering if RX10 iii could output raw HFR video thru HDMI and
    then recorded by external devices, such as Shogun from Atomos.
    (I have a Shogun and Lumix GH4 by my side, and had successfully recorded
    raw 4k videos using same setup as described above. But for my research on
    image processing, I need higher raw fps video)
    Thank you for your answer in advance.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 7 lety

      I appreciate your kind words, thank you. There is no RAW output from the RX10 (or any other Sony consumer/semi-pro "still" camera that supports video). There is no RAW output from the GH4/GH5 either. Although I don't have the RX10III here to check (I returned it to Sony after the review), pretty sure that the highest frame rate is 60fps to the HDMI out.
      If you want RAW, you'll have to go to the Red Epic, Arri Alexa, Sony F3 or similar.

    I wonder if I might pick your brain about one aspect of the camera based on your experience with it. I am a nature photographer and film a lot of action shot such as birds in flight. My typical carry around rig is the Canon7D Mark II with a Canon 100-400mm L lens. I love this camera but my one frustration is struggling wit finding the best settings for shooting birds in flight for the fastest lock on to the subject, and the ability to change focus as the subject moves towards or away from the shooting position. What would you recommend as the best settings for the camera for using it for birds in flight? As an aside, the sports action choice in the SCN mode has been about the best so far, but I know there has to be a optimal setting of the various, focus, etc., parameters for the mission. Thanks, Sandy Scott

    Hi Maarten, first of all thank you for all fantastic reviews. Really interesting to watch your videos! I own a RX10 camera and are very satisfied with it but have now decided to go with the longer range series like Rx10 III or Rx10 IV. I mostly use the camera for traveling and family photos and videos. I just bought an Rx10 III but its still unopened since I'm having some doubts about the AF. The RX10 III was on sale for 1 103 Euro and the new Rx10 IV cost about 1 936 Euro in Sweden. Do you think I will be satisfied to stick with the RX10 III that I've just bought?

I purchased the Sony RX10 III for this trip as I wanted a camera with reach for wildlife without heavy equipment and I was astounded at the quality. I still have much to learn about the camera, especially video. Your review taught me about the custom zebra settings which I did not even know existed. Hand held stills are sharp even at 600mm equivalent. For video at 600mm you really need a tripod imo. Sony really knows what it is doing. I did not find the menu system overly difficult. Thank you for your thorough reviews. I shoot mainly with Sony A6000 and A7ii. But this seems great for travel, with the increasing cabin allowance limitations. I could travel with this as main camera and one or 2 A6000 with small or fast Sigma primes. Would the quality suffer? Would I miss something? Anyway never loved the Sony Zeiss 16-70mm. I also got Sony RX100 iii. A couple of years ago I wanted to go full frame, is crazy to go down smaller? Advantage, no dust spots in photos with blue skies. And more video potential. Other idea was Sony A6500 but RX 10 iii may be more fun to carry around every day, Not cheap. If it were 25% cheaper, I'd have no doubts,

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 7 lety +1

      I think it's a great travel size - and yes, the sensor is a compromise, but as I keep saying - there are large prints of images taken with one inch sensor on my walls, and they are obviously of lesser quality. Content nearly always trumps quality (well, for me anyway). Some may be unhappy, but I'm not. Yes, if it were less, I'd own one too ...

    • @stefpix
      @stefpix Před 7 lety +1

      yes I agree with you. Too many on photo sites split hairs about IQ and take uninspired photos. Anyway 35mm film looks so less resolving than a current camera. I think I could always fit in my bag a Sony A6000 with a Sigma 30mm for some shots. My other issue is that the RX10 i is now $798 while the RX10 iii is 1399 USD. the 600mm equiv is tempting and I may gent into video more. is 4K that important? My photos are more about content, and anyway i find focus of bokeh often a way to conceal uninteresting composition or content. I think of Alex Webb, some great shots where usually everything is in focus, but the light and the composition are searing. Thanks for your comment, as wise as your opinions.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 7 lety +1

      Thank you for the kind words, always appreciated. The RX10-2 is now a great value, as long as you can live without the lens. 4K is substantially better quality, even if your output is HD, and it enables you to zoom in on parts of the image to 200% without quality loss.
      Of course, that's the entire value of bokeh, to put the viewer's attention where you want. It's just not always possible to clear the background of distracting details.

    • @stefpix
      @stefpix Před 7 lety

      Thank you/. RX10-2 is actually 1198 USD, RX10-3 1398USD, RX10-1 798 USD. I would not consider the 2. I was considering buying a Sigma 150-600 or 80-400 with Sony adapter maybe to shoot some wilderness upstate NY or in Mexico, at the same time the RX10-3 is marginally pricier of that combo. The -1 is more portable for everyday use. Yes bokeh has value, but i think it became too much of an obsession.

    Great video! Can you do a variable zoom rate on the zoom ring? Or does moving the zoom ring cause it to move at one set rate, even though it might be set in the menu? When shooting video, sometimes want to zoom in or out VERY slowly and then stop zooming without making a noticeable stop. Can this be accomplished with the RX10iii?

      I appreciate the kind words. As I explain and demonstrate, there is a menu setting to control the zoom rate. In my opinion, it is not really possible to do the kind of smooth and organic zoom - with the smooth stop and start - you're looking for. That said, maybe with a steady hand a lot of practice you could master it to a reasonable level of satisfaction. Hope this helps.

Am a huge Canon DSLR fan considering making the switch but I’ve always found the Sony’s look more washed out and require greater color correction. Also, can you get a similar shallow depth of field with this camera? So many questions inspired by your video! Cheers!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 6 lety

      Thanks for the kind words. I didn't try it, but Sony's autofocus is reasonably fast and reliable and this lens should get you fairly close so that the bird is large enough to be a focus point. I do imagine that it would require some practice and familiarization to hone your skills.
      I agree that I spend more time Lightrooming Sony images for the reasons you state - but I've recently been trying to find a set of colour profile settings that would get me closer to an image that pleases me in camera.
      It is more difficult to get a shallow depth of field with the smaller sensor, but the zoom and the aperture on this lens are sufficient to get a reasonable bokeh - you'll just have to back off a bit and zoom in more.

      I would suggest that the broadcafst-suitabilty of any footage is a tradeoff between quality and content. No-one is going to reject compelling content because of the codec used to record. On the other hand, if you are asking if this is a broadcast-quality camera, the simple answer is no, but that does not mean that you will not find broadcasters using it, or that broadcasters will always reject footage recorded with it. If I set the aperture to F4, what MODE do I take photos in? I want to shoot P mode.
    If I shoot in P mode it will adjust shutter speed and aperture, right?
    Can I manually turn the aperture ring when I am in the MF mode?
    Also I saw a video where the Aperture ring said F6 for example but on the screen on top on the camera it said something like F3. Why is that?
    I want the shutter speed to be set at 1000. I keep reading about ISO but I understand that is about making the photo lighter or darker, the same as Exposure Compensation. I am probably wrong.
    If ISO is shutter speed, where in the Menu can I adjust the shutter speed to 1000?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 3 lety

      You cannot set the aperture in P mode, only in A or M.
      MF? Do you mean manual focus? That has no bearing on exposure.
      When the camera is in P or S, the camera controls the aperture, over-riding the manual setting.
      If you want to control both the shutter and aperture, then only M will provide that capability. With AutoISO, the camera will set the exposure, and EV can be used to adjust. If you are setting the ISO to a specific value, there is no EV adjustment.
      ISO is not shutter speed. It is a setting to manage the amplification applied to the signal coming from the sensor.
      EV is not a fourth exposure setting - it uses whichever setting (aperture, shutter, ISO) is available to make its adjustments.

During video shooting when I lose focus it is almost impossible to have it pull back focus on its own, so I have to stop video, regain focus in still mode and then resume video shooting. Chances are that it is my wrongdoing to not setting the camera in the right focusing mode, if so then the camera in not very forgiving.
    The quality and features are so good in the camera that it is unworthy of me to speak bad about this one feature I have problems with but that is what I am most disappointed with.In HFR mode the focusing is even more painful.

    Dear Maarten: Again, hats off to another great review. I know you shoot almost exclusively in 4K, but did you develop any opinion if the 1080p footage from the RX10 III is any better than the 1080p footage from the a6300 or the a6500?
    Specifically, I would be looking at the difference in the 1080p quality in 30fps and 60fps .
    And would you have an opinion at this time for the BEST 1080p camera capable of shooting at 60fps at this time, whether it is a particular Sony, or Canon, or Nikon, or Panasonic, or ??? other brand? I would like something that has a wide dynamic range, good noise suppression in low light, and is easy to grade. I would be willing to sacrifice a bit of sharpness if it means dealing better with moire and noise.
    Thanks in advance.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 7 lety +1

      Thanks, your kind words are always a pleasure to read. In my mind the 1080p footage from a camera that doesn't do 4K is often better than the 1080 from a camera that does. I'm sure there's a good reason for that. Of those three (they all do 4K, but the RX10's sensor is smaller) I would prefer the A6500 - but I have not compared them side-by-side.
      I think the original A7S would be my choice - it really excelled at low light, but supported 4K only to external recorders.

    • @markromero7874
      @markromero7874 Před 7 lety +1

      Thank you for your feedback and your suggestion of the original a7s. I do have a D750 to go along with my a6300 and my a6000, but I guess I should trade in / sell the D750 and get an a7s instead for shooting 1080p. Thanks again.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 7 lety

      Wait - the D750 is a great stills camera - I wouldn't be in a hurry to trade that in, unless you're giving up stills. Otherwise, yes, sounds like a good plan if you want the best low light recordings at 1080.

    • @markromero7874
      @markromero7874 Před 7 lety +1

      Thank you again. Yes, the D750 IS a great stills camera. I shoot real estate for a living - mostly stills but also doing more and more video - and while originally I was a Nikon shooter, I bought an a6300 for the 4K video. I now also use it for stills for real estate as well. (Image quality is NOT paramount when shooting real estate.)
      While I admit that the 4K video of the a6300 is wonderful on a tripod or on a slider, the 4K video seems rather blurry when I use it on a gimbal for "walktrhough" style videos. Probably this is due to user error; I am probably walking too fast or not smooth enough in my movements.
      So to make walking shots smoother, I now try to shoot at 60fps in 1080p when on a gimbal to make the footage less blurry. But... the 1080p of the a6300 is not so great. Hence, the question about a great 1080p camera.
      I'm going to try giving the D750 one last shot on my gimbal shooting at 1080p at 60fps and see if it is good enough (or, at least better than the 1080p from out of the a6300). The 1080p of the D750 DOES seem to have good dynamic range, and in some test clips I filmed I was impressed with the ability to recover highlights when using Resolve.
      Too bad there is no one single perfect camera for everything. But then again if there was, I wouldn't be able to look forward to your videos!!!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  Před 7 lety

      What a pleasure to chat with you. Which gimbal are you using? I would not expect 60fps to make anything less blurry - and the 1080 on the A6300 is of lesser quality - I'd shoot at 4K and down res in edit. If you're happy on a slider, I'd suggest adjusting the gimbal's sensitivity, or just slowing down your moves.

    Judging by all the MAMILs in your review, I assume it's a good choice for wildlife. ;)

      If the lens ring says F4 and the actual aperture isn't, that's misleading. Most ramped aperture lenses don't have markings.
