"Fun" fact - just for the people who actually think it's Mappa, it's not. It's a new studio called Bug Films, they previously worked on parts of Komi Can't Communicate and Summer Time Render, and this is the first show where they're the primary studio. They're CRUSHING it.

I don't even think they're an animation studio in the show, Akira mentions commercials and the one guy was having someone's kid inserted into something. Entertainment in general in Japan is SUPER FUCKED UP.

@@faintduch6630yeah, without spoiling much, the MC isn’t the only person with a bucket list, there’s a villain whose bucket list is full of things like kill people and do drugs, the main heroine even has a bucket list of 100 things to do to NOT become a zombie
Never thought I would see such a well written and relatable protagonist in this anime 😂😂
When he goes "YATTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" and the music kicked in, I went fucking WILD. I worked in corporate for a decade, then worked warehouse, data entry, etc. At one point I did three straight weeks (no days off) of 13.5 hour days working what was basically a glorified flea market, constantly restocking, pulling pallets, etc. So when I saw his life die out, I FELT THAT. So seeing him come back to life nearly brought me to tears. Absolutely incredible work from this studio.
Modern Protags for a modern audience.
Thats why we keep getting guys like Akira, Denji and Kafka. Its easier to relate to these guys than a standard happy go lucky protag.

It has to be, even though i tried to deny it, afterall, the person we live with the most is our own selves, so we should take care of ourselves.

I love how the colorful blood looks like paint and confetti instead. It makes it look like a celebration, which I think is fitting

The funny thing about this show is, a grip of the animators that worked on this came from working at OLM studios before. And if you look at the company badges, they recreated the OLM logo, but named the company ZLM. They're taking shots at their previous studio. This episode was even directed by Kazuki Kawagoe, who directed a bunch of stuff for OLM, including episodes of Komi Can't Communicate.

And he literally rips through them as the color shifts. I didn’t even notice it on my first viewing.

When Alira was watching on his TV, there was this part where they explain exploitative companies, but before that there was actually a news report of some cases of a "virus" or an epidemic but Akira quickly switched it up.
It was too fast that we didn"y even notice it so it was kinda strange why suddenly the next day there"s a fuck ton of zombies
Maybe it will be addressed in a future episode, but that's still a good hidden foreshadow regardless.

it's funny how they made the portion of him being exploited more scarier then the zombie portion of the episode (because it's real). Once all the zombie stuff stared happening it was so funny and fun. Great first episode.

I like how the same time everyone else turned into a zombie, the protagonist turned from a zombie back into a human lol
This is the series I've been most excited for this season and DAMN this adaption is already amazing.
I honestly think people are sleeping on the "YATTA/I'm free" moment. This man went from being full of hope and life to DEAD inside, a zombie, and in an instant, THE UNIVERSE OPENED ITSELF TO HIM. The way the music kicks in perfectly, the way the voice actor's voice kind of cracks on the first "YA...", the animation and art direction, it's such a perfect fucking moment.
(It doesn't hurt that I lived some similar shit in the way back, literally did three weeks of 13.5 hour days once. I felt this moment IN MY SOUL.)
@@RabidDogma I swear I've rewatched that whole scene at least 50 times now lol. It was perfect, and I still have the music stuck in my head too. One of the best, if not the best first episode for an anime I've ever watched.

AND, both this and Netflix AiB start with the main character playing video games and leaving their pathetic regular lives for more exciting fantasy ones.
...someone should check on that guy.
Can't believe I didn't realize that. I even loved the ideea when I've read it in the manga, I remember relating with Arisu
We all had that wish that the apocalypse start just so we don't go to work or school, first episode was a 10/10 everything was great, looks like it's gonna be my chill anime of this season, really happy to see your reaction to it
Kinda like how some kids nowadays want lockdowns to come back again so they dont have to go to school
This episode did a great job of recapturing the feeling I had reading this when the manga first came out. It’s super fun and vibrant.
I like how the episode made everyone ask about how the women is keeping her sanity/hygiene and getting their unwanted answer right after
My boy a complete psycho now, crushing zombies, tackling them, whilst being high as fuck happy.
Studio Ghibli did an awesome job on this as expected.
I have to admit, the animation got me curious about this show and after watching the first episode, it completely blew my expectations, in the best way.
The animation is freaking great!
lot of animators are from the OLM studio. And they built new stufio named BUG FILM Studio and they animated their old workplace(OLM) as Akira's office building

But zom100 has some action scenes so animation is important too

Love how the monochrome color represents his feelings at the time, clever decision on "Show, Don't Tell."
The manga is absolutely great too. They managed to capture the same exact style. It reminds me a lot of Tengoku Daimakyo (Heavenly Delusion) but not as dark. Can't wait to see how they continue to animate the rest of the series. Bug Films has been doing great with the work they've been a part of and I believe this is their first full project?
I like how they use the colors to censor the blood since its not a dark story and doesn't need a high rating.

9:08 the fact that this man blew away the black bars and expanded the aspect ratio is insane. I've never seen that in anime.
I had a friend who got a six figure salary but was so overworked he couldn’t eat well, sleep well, go outside and enjoy life anymore. He quit even though the job paid so well, it wasn’t worth the stress. He went back to college for a different career path. So proud and happy for him ❤
The animation is amazing and there's also a live action series of this being released soon as well but I think I prefer this animated version because they get to use more colors and animate crazy stuff.

been reading this manga for more than a year or so. I’m excited for this adaptation it looks good
I'm pretty sure this is my favorite 24 minute premiere ever (oshi no ko doesn't count for me, since they had a whole movie to work with). The pacing was great, the art direction was perfect, and all the details in between showed so much care and effort (example: the transitions in this episode were amazing).
Fiction: Man, I hope the world ends so I won't have to go to work tomorrow.
Reality: You know damn well that even if World War 3 starts, aliens invade Earth, and Covid-19 Part 2 Electric Boogaloo, all happens tomorrow, your boss will still be like "yeah, you still gotta come in"
The animation is amazing, the wat they switch animation styles to portray different points of view. The MC usually being the most colorful and vibrant. I watched the first episode high and maaaan those colors and constant change in animation was insane

The animation studio is former OLM staff (recently stuff like Komi-san, Nagatoro, Odd Taxi, Summertime). The company logo in this is basically the OLM logo.

My favorite part is when Akira screams 'Im free' his head breaks through the aspect ratio bars. Very nice visual way to show him breaking out of the cage he's been in.
I remember reading the manga and enjoying it Im glad its getting both an anime and live adaptation
One of the best pilot i have ever seen, cinematography is on another level. BUG FILMS first anime on their resume is god tier. This anime will going to be one of the best anime this summer 2023!

I love the paint/colorful blood being used because we are following an MC who saw things basically in black and white, and when he got his wish of finally doing the things he wanted to do, everything is colorful. It's not bleak TO HIM. It's like we are seeing the world through his eyes, so I like the change. Would be a great style choice switching back and forth. I'm a fan of pastel/neon horror, so this is a welcome change (and fits the covers of the manga well.)
Who knows? We may follow another character where they see the blood and such of the zombies because their view is different from Akira's.
Good first episode. The color of the blood and everything is so good, the mc is happy during a Zombie apocalypse! The live action movie drops on Netflix this year on Aug 3.

This is going to sound messed up but I relate to the protagonist alot, I know or knew that horrible feeling being in a go nowhere job where you feel under appreciated, miserable, anxious heck I would even get stomach aches and headaches a couple years in and I know that feeling of just wanting something horrible to happen just so you don't have to go to work, but also lack the resolve to quit or let down my coworkers. This hit so close to home for me.
