We let our Westie off leash at the dog beach and this is what happened...

  • We took Sami to the dog beach and decided to let him off leash (which is something we rarely do). He gets pretty overwhelmed when there are many dogs around, but he is always calm and well behaved. This time another dog felt threatened by Sami and started a dog fight, which makes us question whether it was a good idea to let Sami off leash, or bring him to the dog beach at all? What do you think? Leave us a comment and tell us!

We have a westie, she's been in those situations and fought. Watching Sami, I thought she did really well that black and white small dog, I think it was a Lhasa Apso had a go at Sami a couple of times and he didn't react. But the 'Lhasa' was still kept coming, Sami snapped and gave as good as he got.

    • @WestieVibes

Yeah, after seeing it on video I could see that too, the black and white dog definitely provoked him 🙂 Sami didn't do anything wrong, it's true. But it's still uncomfortable and I'd rather avoid dog parks and beaches from now on 😅 Whenever it's too many dogs unsupervized, fights happen, it's natural.

Yeap! All the smells really make a number on them 🙈 I guess it's all about knowing your Westie's limits and not pushing too hard 😊 Like maybe avoid dog beaches or parks completely, or go for 5 mins and then leave. In the past I would've said exposing them more will help get them used to other dogs, but I did with Sami and he still gets overwhelmed, so maybe it's just how some dogs are 🤷🏻‍♀ Not all of them are comfortable in social situations, just like us, and that's ok 😃

That fight didn't seem to be his fault. He seemed to have good doggie social skills. Perhaps you can take him there either early morning or evening when fewer dogs are there. His recall will get better if you keep working on it. Practice makes perfect in training; you can't expect perfection if a dog rarely has the opportunity to practice a behavior. Given that he is rarely off leash, he did really well.

in my experience (5 westies over the years) there's an invisible "dog-recall" range of about 10 yards, beyond which westies do not/cannot respond to recall due to their hunter's instinct. allowing your dog to go out of this "invisible circle" may be a recipe for disaster, especially if there are other large/hostile dogs around that are not peacefully-disposed. and there are an increasing number of these animals out in public these days
Sami's a lovely handsome little chappie but this was a clear case of him being an infiltrator into an alien pack. and where there's a pack there's often a problem
    best ;o)

    Sami is so cute 😍
In my opinion, the leash is a necessary item all the time. In that case you can be sure of the maximum distance Sami can go. In your video, when Sami don't have the leash anymore the first thing he did was running to other dogs. If the fight had started before you arrive, they could have been bad consequences.
For dog beach, I'm not a big fan because there is too many dogs with no real attention of their masters. So it can easily finish in fight.
By experience, any dog can have a bad reaction that finish in fight.
I had an adorable westie, but not really sociable with other dogs. No real fight but didn't want them to go near her too much. But she was fine with other dogs of family members.
One day, we didn't know what happened but your westie attacked the dog of my grandparents under the car so it was difficult to stop it.

Sami so handsome. Sami didn't start the fight. The dog didn't want Sami included in the fun. Humans act the way when they believe someone is taking their friendship away. Keep Sami on a leash. You have him socialize with one when you return home. Once becomes use to that procedure maybe 2 but no more. I love the videos of Sami. Your video just popped-up…came. out before I subscribed. Problem with Westies is they have no idea they’re a “small” dog. Found this out first time we took Sophie to a dog park. She was seven at the time, and had massive amounts of energy. A lot of big dogs were in the fenced-in area, also. I was amazed at how fast she could run! She made the mistake of running after a Great Dane, who was large, but still a puppy. Sophie nipped at Zoey’s (I remember her name 😂) legs while she tried to run, or even try to get away from Sophie. Sophie finally got tired of annoying Zoey, and found herself shade under the seat of a picnic table. Zoey was just playing happily, then she saw Sophie….time for payback. Zoey made her way over to Sophie, got down to her level, and let out a guttural “woof.” The owner was horrified his dog did that, but, honestly, I couldn’t stop laughing. Sophie deserved her comeuppance.😂 Sophie sat still under that table, not moving a muscle, for at least ten minutes. She obviously got the message. Gosh, I wish I couod have videoed that. I still laugh about it. Guess Sophie knows she’s not a Great Dane anymore?😅 Sami did pretty good for his first time off the leash. Westies can be divas, and often don’t realize they’re “dogs.” Sophie thinks she’s human. Lola….I think she gets it! Anyway, sorry for the long post, just enjoyed Sami’s adventure! Take care!💕

My little Lachie( 8 year old Westie) is great with other dogs, he is a lover not a fighter.
But when another dog jumps into his face and personal space he can get cranky very quickly. He has had two fights which I've broken up very quickly and nothing serious happened but he gets very stressed and emotional from it and moves his jaw rapidly for a few minutes afterwards.
This upsets me and whenever a dog gets in his face I pick him and move him .
Westies don't start fights but they'll stand up for themselves.

I could never . If we don’t know or are not at least somewhat familiar the dogs and the owners I don’t risk it. Its not fair to the dogs. Listen that little black and white dog briefly attempted to get his paws on samis back thats a sure sign of wanting to dominate. Also sami moving away is clear communucation he’s uncomfortable there were too many dogs showing interest at the same time. the other dog following him inspite of him backing away is big indicator of building aggression. Dont be afraid to be firm with someone elses dog in order to protect both yourselves and them. I would have immediately said a firm no! To the other dog even if owner didn’t address it promptly . Sami will learn to see you as his protection. Good luck and remember if theres a chance the interaction could end this way its not worth it ❤️

I have a Carin terrier. The secret is you will never control them. A command is like a request. My Maddie is a nut bag and she loves all her friends. Almost all people. She is the the unofficial mascot of the Issaquah parks department. She can be off leash in certain places but for her I have learned that I need to be really aware of distractions. She isn't a runner by nature but if she sees someone she loves she will be off in a second. But its their nature. And I love it.

Thank you, I am glad to hear you enjoy our videos!😍 I trained Sami since he was a puppy, we used to go to dog school 3 times a week plus we practiced at home too. For the recall, you want to use the best treats. You only call once and don't repeat the command. Ideally start with a really long leash, so you don't risk the dog running away 😊 In the beginning, use the leash to bring him to you. You call him, then gently pull on the leash and guide him to come and when he is right where you want him, quick reward! ✨

I am thinking of adopting a scnoodle or a cava poo but after seeing your videos, I am going to include a Westy in that group. I’m 77 years old so I have to be very careful what I choose to adopt. Probably going to only have one chance of this. I had a lab many years ago and he dealt very well and calmly with other dogs. Any dog that I get is going to need to be socialized And trained by a competent trainer to be able to deal with other dogs. If you’ve already tried this tactic, I don’t know what to say. Much luck.

without wishing to be rude, at 77 a westie may be too much dog for you. they have fairly large exercise requirements and low boredom threshold and if these are not satisfied they may become destructive as a result. i'm currently an extremely fit/healthy 69 and we currently have a rescue westie which we got aged 4. assuming she has the average westie lifespan, i'll be a bit over 80 when she "shuffles off this mortal coil" and much as i'm sad about it, i know deep down that getting another one at that age when i will probably be too old to walk/play properly with him/her any more, would be a big mistake and possibly even cruel where the westie is concerned
of course i could be totally wrong about all this in your case but it's something that should be borne in mind. always remember this: these are most definitely NOT lapdogs but highly active hunter/predators by nature

  • @Chrisamic

Actually he did really well. He tried to ignore the bad behaviour of the black and white dog until the provocation became to much for him. Owners of that dog should have been there and put HIM on the lead before it escalated. Some parents...
Try not to drag Sami away when he is greeting other dogs on the lead. He's quite social so positive interactions like that can only be helpful. Dragging him away because of your own anxiety may increase his own anxiety, but he seemed pretty unconcerned to be honest.
I've had three westies and they can be a real handful in these settings.

After watching it on video, I also realized that it wasn't his fault 😄 But in the heat of the moment I couldn't tell and I assumed it was Sami.
He is social indeed, we joke that he is the extrovert of the family! 😅I became more aware of how my own anxiety can affect him and I worked on staying calm and relaxed.
Thanks so much for your comment! 💛💛

they vary completely. the funniest one was my first, Samuel Whiskers, who would resolutely refuse to leave the car port if there was only the odd drop of drizzle but would happily leap into and swim in the river in the middle of winter if there was no rain about.

My Westie is much like Sami with other dogs. Luckily, Sami’s altercation was with another small dog. Please don’t trust unfamiliar big dogs to be off leash with him or even get up real close. Mine was once on leash and suffered a surprise attack from a pit, who, thank god, let go and only left a deep hole in his neck.

    • @WestieVibes
      @WestieVibes  Před rokem

Omg, I'm so sorry that happened! That must have been terrifying. Is he ok? Is he afraid of other dogs now? Sami was leashed and was once attacked by a husky who was off leash, in the middle of the city. It was unexpected and I dragged Sami by the leash and he flew through the air and I grabbed him 🙈He was not even 1 year old. Since then I've been careful with larger dogs and kept an eye out.

In USA dog owners are sued for walking dog off leach. You need to find out the rules in your city.

it is to be hoped that this silly woman got bitten when she tried to get the dogs apart!!. Lesson one, your dog STAYS on a lead until it will return when called. Lesson two, never let your male dog get near a group of strange dogs where one ( possibly the brown one ) is a bitch coming into heat!! Lesson three, two's company, three's a pack!!. If you don't know what happens when a number of dogs form a pack, look it up!!

  • @kerzner31

The other dog is Alpha and the owner should have been more attentive. Sami reacted perfectly, he wasn’t getting pushed around. The other dogs liked playing with him but I understand your reaction in the moment, it is upsetting.

the way hes pulling you and leading you will only enforce his need to be agressive. Teach him to walk beside you, it does wonders when he dosent have to be in charge.

    • @WestieVibes
      @WestieVibes  Před 5 měsíci

Trust me, I taught him walking at heel and obedience in general. We trained for years and he will only do it when there are no distractions. He even has a diploma for the certified BH test, which was a huge deal for a Westie and it was a personal triumph for me because it's not an easy test 😅 We still go to training school once a week, just to keep the training fresh (and also to keep him busy).
But despite all that, I was never able to correct his reactivity to other dogs. No matter what I do, he is aggressive towards certain dogs. So my solution is no more dog parks, he only socializes at dog school, when it's a controlled environment.
