Exploring Kenya's Most Unique City: Mombasa (#61)

- It was time to explore Mombasa, Kenya's major port on the Indian ocean and it's most interesting city. I didn't have a plan, but I knew I wanted to explore the history of the city. Along the way I had some nice Swahili food and met some friendly locals, while avoiding any trouble...or did I?
#sabbatical #africa #kenya
I love the lady who stood up for you like "why are you yelling at the white man" good lady
"Huko kwao hakuna Jua" haha i like her.
Yh but the whites fail to stand up for blacks when this happens...
Omar X you are wrong about this. I have seen many white people stick up for black people. Maybe your views are biased and narrow minded.
@@omarxomarx8511 whites stand up for blacks all the time. open your eyes.
@@omarxomarx8511 Why somebody should yell at any innocent person? Regardless it’s gender or race? Unless someone is doing something really bad.
I just love how this guy speaks and interact with the people
I have a lot of respect for him. He have learnt the language to break the ice. He is not regular tourist. I also can see that people have a lot of respect to him.
Thats why he is save. People know okay hes nit just a normal tourist..
He’s like Bald & Bankrupt, adventurous and multilingual, but more chilled and not laddish. I really enjoy much of Mr. Bald’s channel, but sometimes, especially with Harald Baldr, he gets a bit silly and churlish. I like Sabbatical’s maturity in how he deals with people, and he clearly respects the cultures he visits.
Bald lacks elementary human respect towards others and completely disregards the culture of the country he is in. I tried watching his stuff and I cringed hard and often. It's no coincidence he had troubles because of his behavior in Chechnya. I have always been saying that if you are respectful and decent, you will rarely have problems no matter where you go.
@@osiris3103 I love Sabbatical’s channel! A very chilled, smart guy.
You got to respect bald and Harrald for being the first doing these style videos, now we have more with sabatical and Kurt kaz, great stuff from all of them, although different styles, i like m all. Only one i dislike is that other english dude, simon or something?
@@ww2736 Don’t get me wrong, I like Bald most of the time. Just not into the laddish shenanigans.
@@osiris3103 I like Bald enough to enjoy the videos most of the time but cannot stop the video fast enough if creepy Harald shows up.
“Im hopimg nothing crazy happes today”. The minute he gets out of the house, a guy is screaming at him😂
This guy is the definition of chill. My guy just walks around and vibes
Agree 💯, I think his desire and ability to learn the language allows him to be in this way, I love the fact Tommy makes such an effort to learn the culture, history and language and my experience of travel and these videos show the locals appreciate the effort......it is telling when you watch his videos and you see how shocked locals are when they hear him speak, shows what went before him!
He really is
Hope you're alright, do be careful while visiting some places.
you have mastered the bargaining skills when buying items on the streets more than me, Yet am a Kenyan
@@klnj9714 He is a pro. You may even think he was born and raised in Kenya
changamka bana
It has amazed me how Sabbatical knows how to bargain like a real Kenyan🇰🇪😂😂and how the hell do you know the worth of Kenyan shilling you can't be coned
He was mean with bracelets!
@@irenedavo3768 nah. The people who make the bracelets are paid very little. The guy who owns the store makes all the money. Usually the same rich guy owns all the art/craft tourist stores.

As I mentioned before as an Indian born in East Africa our forefathers were brought by the British to East Africa in the 18th century to build railway. Mombasa was the entry point. Then some moved inland to Uganda &Tanzania etc. so lot of Indian influence there like chapati was adopted by locals which Indians cooked every day. Even Indian language was adopted by East Africans. You will find lot of Indians influence in East African cuisine. Been to Mombasa umpteen times since I was a baby. My mother was born in Mombasa
Language?
@@drewg6200
I think most Indians in East Africa are from a province in India called Gujarat and the language there is Gujarati
Just a correction. It was the 19th century, not 18th
The history taught in Kenyan schools is that the Indians were brought by the British to build the railway. However , the truth is that the Indians used to be in east Africa before the Portuguese. They used to trade with the swahili people and the Arabs. It is very sad to see history being distorted by these Kenyans.
Which language 😂😂
You deserve all the success you get. Thank you for showing other cultures and languages to the rest of the world.
Greetings from NZ
The cliffhanger tho
i literally said the same thing then right after it i saw your comment lol
Very impressed with your channel. It's a celebration of languages and with this it offers something that most other travel vlogs cannot! Looking forward to follow your lead through this amazing continent.

This is an understated series. You really feel like you’re walking around with him where he goes
Remember when I told you to screenshot the number of subs when you had like 3k subs , I see you reaching a million subs soon, watching from nairobi.
You’re great, man. I became a husband and a father here, in Tanzania, so I’m a little sedentary. Once my Son can walk & talk (which is any moment now, it seems 🤣) we’ll be out on the streets of East Africa, like you!
One life to love ❤️💪🏾
Naija bro I dey go visit mombasa next month. Everywhere good 👍
Do you watch videos of John StJulien 🇹🇿
In Nairobi we speak Swahili mixed with slang we call it "Sheng"...and that culture has really gone deep and is used even in adverts, music etc
Do you know Jim Nduruchi 🇰🇪
@@irenedavo3768 your husband? Yes we know him. You are wickedly good together
I think that's very fascinating & important. While common language is great to communicate with own country's people, adapting language to current time is equally valuable!

1:44 Shree Jain Temple, must be a temple for Jainism, a non violent, vegetarian religion from India. British brought in many Indians to Kenya, who helped build the railways, ports etc. as indentured labours. In the book Man Eaters of Tsvao, about the lions who developed a taste for humans, many of them unfortunately Indians, who were in camps building the Mombassa to Nairobi line.
Great video

I was from Indian videos mixing rice to chupati and the great economist to the children villagers whom love to see you with the chief and his 11wives. Your amazing man keep it up. Love from 🇵🇭
Vasco da Gama was there, on his first trip to India. He was the first known european to be there, but they didn’t much like him.
Actually he was not going to India the Portugal king at the time had sent Vasco to explore the East African Coast after he reached there the people of Mombasa were hostile so he went to Malindi where he was welcomed....
@@tete8151 They were smart I guess. Most of the exploration ended into colonisation.

Finally.i was eagerly waiting
Awesome bro ❤❤

The Swahili language has a lot of Persian words in it and this is interesting to me👍👍👍
We call Persia/Iran region _Uajemi_ in Swahili. I have no idea why.
My understanding is that the language developed over time, borrowing words from the languages of the visitors and merchants to the area. Bantu, Arab and maybe Persian traders as well.
Persians are the ones who emigrated to mombasa not Arabs. There is a big park in Nairobi called jeevanjee a successful Persian businessman during 1800s
Examples?
Please I need your guys I don't know Arab neither Persian or Hindu. Could someone tell me which are those borrowed words from above languages I mentioned
I was in Mombasa just two months ago, and have been so many times. Kuddos to this guy for being brave to walk with the camera recording. Not because it could be stolen, but because the people will always look at you if they see you with a video camera. It is an unconfortable feeling when you trying to record content. Also, I know the police can easily bother you out of tamaa (greed) or mistaking you for a bad guy. By the way, great pronunciation on your Swahili. I miss Barkaa restaurant.
You know alot of Kenyan history kuddos @sabattical
Please make another video with Miss joesy . I loved those.
Can't wait to find out what happened
*I am Balushi from Pakistan, here in Karachi Pakistan we also have Bambasa yes it's not Mombasa but Bambasa... it's really awesome to watch your videos and yes, You should also travel to Muscat, Oman and you can try your Swahili there as well. There are thousands of Zanzibari origin people living there for centuries.....* 😊
NICE BROTHER
You must try some street foods. Mandaazi. Kitumbua. Samosa bhajia
Privet Privet ( hi .. hi) I can understand you a little because when I was in India all stared at me like saw a ghost hahaha some of girls asked me to click pictures with them
at 1:32 i love the taxi, tuk tuk sometimes called, that had pot leaves all over the windshield, definately not america, i love it
I feel like you need to find a local tour guide that way you will have a much better experience as they explain to you the history of Mombasa and even take you to some areas you would never access as a foreigner where you meet the true swahili people.
