  • So after a successful purchase of a cheap bumper for a BMW I tried it again, this time on a Jetta, not as good this time but still entertaining. I think I found a new hobby.

    I got the economy painted bumper from eBay a few months ago & was scared at first. It looks amazing & went back to its original shape quickly. Can’t beat a painted bumper for $320

    These things seem to be hit or miss. I took a chance on a painted front bumper cover from another eBay vendor a few years ago (not the vendor in the video). It arrived not folded, but also not wrapped very well. The pointy ends of the cover in the wheel well openings were not sufficiently protected, and somewhere in the process (during shipping? before shipping?) it had been dragged with the pointy ends down on a rough surface and it had worn through the insufficient wrapping and into the cover itself. Also they had missed painting the 1" or so wrap around ends that face into the wheel wells, which I didn't see at first since the cover was painted dark blue and the material underneath was black. I took pics of the damage prior to unwrapping it and the unpainted ends after unwrapping, and notified the seller.
    You'd think it'd be a slam dunk replacement with profuse apologies for their ineptitude and putting me through such a PITA, but nope. I had to go round and round with them on getting a refund, and it was a hassle re-wrapping the cover and taking it around to price the shipping options (USPS was cheapest), and standing in line to send it back. Then I did get the refund for the cover they did not reimburse me for the return shipping even though I had provided them with the USPS receipt, and that turned into another fight. I ended up giving them a 100% truthful lowest rating and "buyer beware" review on eBay. About a month later they messaged me and offered to refund my return shipping in exchange for me taking down my truthful bad review, but by that time it was too late. I said screw you, it's more important that potential customers be warned about the way you do business. They're either no longer on eBay or they've changed their name.
    Now I need a bumper cover for another vehicle but I'm very wary of going through a similar experience again, so I'm reading reviews and watching videos. This video does not make me feel very confident of my chances of receiving something not damaged.

    I ordered a new bumper, it turns out from that company, and didn't expect it would be folded and nearly freaked out when it arrived. I got lucky. It's unpainted and I laid it on the spare bed. The room is somewhat warm but not hot. I used a heat gun on the folds and it mostly straightened out and after 2 days it looks like it should. The folding shit is something they should warn people about though.

      They have the option at probably about double the price to have one not folded. I was more curious to try them again after the first one turned out really well for the money. Not saying I would use them on a higher value car but it is interesting to me how small they can get them folded up.

    That bumper supposed to be left under direct sunlight for 4-5 hours, it will back to it's form. Using heat gun is wrong way to do it. Not this shop or not everyone has experience how to deal with folded bumper, should have been in the instruction of the package.

    I got a bumper for my 2012 Mazda6 from MBI and it turned out great, I didn't have any of the cracks and blemishes you have. I let it unfold in a heated room overnight , and the next day it was back to original shape. There is one area in an opening that may require some additional heat and coaxing, but this is insignificant. I'm thinking your unit may have had something stacked or dropped on it during shipping causing additional stress.

    • @LostCauseRanch
      @LostCauseRanch  Před 6 měsíci

      I think the problem with it was the sharp corner at the bottom of the bumper that affected it. I had a BMW one from the same company that unfolded fine and looked great.

    @danielleblanc5067 Před 4 měsíci

    1. it is unfortunate that it has pieces of paint missing. It seams an issue with the age of the paint. A site called paintnship, paints to order and then ships. And the paint is never cracked because it’s cured but not to that dryness level.
    2. You aren’t suppose to manually unfold it. If you had followed the CZcams QR code you would have seen them just lay it out folded and it unfolds itself as it warms up. I have done it in front of a heater inside.

  • @klutch14u
    @klutch14u Před 2 lety +1

    Since they sell both painted and unpainted the paper generically covers both since you mention/mock the 'fine tuning' steps. I think you need to resist fucking with it immediately after unwrapping it. Put it in direct sun or a well heated room for a few hours first, then work it with heat.

      I’m not sure how they have them listed currently. There is nothing wrong with folding, I got a painted bumper from MBI and it unfolded perfectly, you would never know it was folded. The paint was also a good match. The junkyard is a good option but you have to find the right model and color and most are going to have years of wear and tear. With MBI and similar you get a new painted bumper for around $300. My 2012 Mazda is in nearly new condition and the MBI bumper looks great.

    • @LostCauseRanch
      @LostCauseRanch  Před rokem

      I’m guessing it really depends on the shape and design of the bumper on how well the folding comes back out. This one with the sharp lower corners didn’t fair as well as the more rounded gradual corners of another one I bought.
